Improve on the game of basketball. Look up gyms in your area or go on meetup.com and see if anyone gets together to play basketball near you. Try posting fliers to get people to get together if there's a court. Make a facebook group, do whatever. Ask if you can practice with the team or if they want to play throughout the week.
And1 has some really good basketballs primarily being a streetball company. Link here.
If you want a trusty old Spalding ball then I recommend a Spalding street phantom. They last pretty long.
Here you go, on Amazon
Not sure what the availability is like at your age, but maybe join some skills camps? A nutritionist and trainer both sound like good ideas. I think paying a person is a waste of money if you can afford a ball return net(Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/iC3-by-Airborne-Athletics-Basketball/dp/B00AXM2PJO). This way you can shoot around whenever you have spare time, instead of relying on the schedule of someone else. I wouldn't go crazy with the skill accessories if I were you tbh, just get shots up in your free time and practice whenever you can.
I’m 36 and recently got these from Amazon. They are super basic and I found they are helpful in protecting against banging knees against other players and diving for loose balls.

Well, you should probably get Basketball on Paper for a foundation since Dean Oliver is one of first to explore basketball analysis.
People who are telling you to quit because you probably won't make it to the pros have the wrong idea about why one plays basketball. As almost everybody has mentioned here, you play it because you enjoy it.
But that is not all. Because at the end of the day, there are other enjoyable things as well and you give a lot of them up to spend more time with your academics, especially if you want to end up at a good college. Basketball is great for getting you into a good college even if you are an average but dedicated player.
First, there is the time commitment in your college application. Saying that you have spent 15+ hours a week for the last 10 years on something is impressive. It shows that you are capable of commitment.
But even more than that, playing basketball gives you so many more skills that are useful outside the court, that will eventually make you a great catch for a great college (if you have the right approach of course).
Think about it. How many of your friends can get perform well after getting yelled at by a teacher? If you are a player, sometimes you will get humiliated by your coach in front of hundreds of your friends and family and you will get out there and perform anyway. How many of your friends will know how to be graceful both when winning and when losing? How many will know how to cheer for somebody wholeheartedly?
There is so much more to basketball than putting that ball through the hoop. So if you enjoy playing, keep playing. Even if you never win anything but play with the right attitude it will make you a better person and a better college applicant. If you are not sure about what the right attitude is, I highly recommend Dick DeVenzio's Think Like a Champion.

Check out www.weartesters.com. Reviews aren't bs, and they do a good job informing the consumer. Finish Line, Eastbay, Dick's SG, Nike, and Adidas have sales throughout the year. Right now is back to school sale time, so it's a good time to find shoes at discount. Stores like Marshalls and Gabe's also have the occasional good deal with shoes from past seasons/even current season.
I had luck at a Nike Factory store in Feb. of this yr (Hyperdunk 2016 for $35). Love that shoe.
Here's a deal on the Harden Vol. 2. Haven't played in it. Some people say traction can be spotty, but if you're playing on a clean court/outdoors it should be fine.
If you have an ankle injury that you haven't fully recovered from, you should be wearing ankle braces (ligaments can take up to an entire year to fully heal from a sprain).
I have never sprained an ankle or injured myself playing basketball since I started wearing these (or any other fabric ankle brace). And they do not restrict the functional movement of your ankles, they just prevent hyper-extension from lateral movements.
HIGHLY recommend, coming from someone who had repeated ankle sprains for years.
np. I also got these heel cups my physical therapist recommended. I've been wearing them in all my shoes including my basketball shoes. They've helped as well.

Best ball i had by far lasted me 10 years grips only wearing off now like at least 1000+ hours spent using it.
I am in basically the same boat you are except I don’t play basketball anymore but I previously did keto and if you decide to do that than make sure to do it correctly or you will LOSE muscle mass so that is one thing to consider what am I doing at the moment is eating an amount of calories based on my height and weight daily and trying to take in a lot of protein and lifting 5 days a week I know with basketball lifting 5/7 days is damn near impossible so just try and do some body weight squats and pushups on the days you can’t lift and just be consistent and have self discipline, here is the calculator for calorie intake calorie intake calculator also a good app to track your food on iPhone is MyNetDiary MyNetDiary not to sure about android though but dm me if you need any advice on what to eat and hope this helped
Looking to get back into the game. I really liked the AND1 Rocket style of sneaker with it's pretty mild & thin sole.
I haven't tried the 4.0. My issue was that the quality of construction and materials were pretty low. Does anyone have a better quality alternative that has this style of construction? I like how it's mostly soft fabric which wraps around your foot and then with that thin sole.
Yeah, but here is the 2022 version. Just get that because its newer model and same price.
For me as long as its not an indoor only ball, thats all that matters. Indoor only balls wear out outside a lot faster. I dont think about it too much when I buy one. If you play enough they will all wear out with enough time and you will get to buy another one.
Personally if I needed one today I would just buy this one. Just make sure to get the 29.5". Smaller ones are womens, and kids
Look for the term zero-drop. It refers to the heel height compared to the toe box being at or close to zero.
This is a great shoe to force yourself to run on your forefoot. It's got almost no cushion at all so if you land on your heel, you're going to really feel it. They wear out super fast though.
Hey man! Outdoor basketballs are a tough one but here are a few suggestions.
https://www.amazon.com/Wilson-Killer-Crossover-Basketball-Official/dp/B00DF6YAIE/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=outdoor+basketball&qid=1613026349&sr=8-14 I bought three of these for rapid fire shooting- doesn’t lose air and has a nice feel.
https://www.amazon.com/Nike-Kevin-Durant-Basketball-Yellow/dp/B072KMBQ5S
Picked this up at Marshall’s for 12 bucks. Is definitely superior to the killer crossover, grip is insane
I think focusing on individual things is a good move right now. Worrying about "playing well" is a lot to think about at once, and it's hard to see improvement on a large scale like that.
What are you struggling with? For example, if you spend time every day working on your mid-range shots, you'll start to see small improvements. Once you're making these in-game, you'll get some of your confidence back and realize you can always keep improving in whatever area you focus on.
It's also important to remember that during periods you feel like you're playing poorly, you can always hustle. Focus on playing good defense, working hard to get rebounds, setting screens, and communicating with your teammates. Be the guy/girl who sprints and dives for loose balls. Speed and conditioning will always give you an edge, so this could be a good time to get in good shape. Find a track and start doing intervals and do bodyweight workouts at home. Work on your vertical so you can jump for boards. This will always help.
Otherwise, a lot of this sounds like confidence is the issue. Start talking yourself up more. Say things like: "I put the hours of practice in, and now I'm going to play well." I think working with a trainer or coach one on one could be helpful. I also really enjoyed the book Stuff Good Players Should Know. Hope this helps.
What's his favorite team? What's your budget?
I'm a big college basketball guy and got Sport's Illustated's "The College Basketball Book" one year. It's 256 pages and hardback. If he's an NBA guy, he'd probably like this which appears pretty similar.
Basketballs will lose air over time, especially in colder conditions (Cold air contracts, hot air expands). A ball can also lose weight but still bounce similarly, as the weight/ball pressure variance is minimal relatively speaking.
Most basketballs are recommended to be inflated to 7 PSI. Although most are closer to 8 or 9 for desired bounce. You can buy an air gauge for like 5 bucks or get a pump with a gauge built in:
https://www.amazon.com/Apaix-Pressure-Portable-Basketball-Volleyball/dp/B07MYM1Y33/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=basketball+pump+with+gauge&qid=1596570053&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExT05JREQyNFFaMFBYJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjQwNjMxUVlQV1ZXVU4yTDdSJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwMzgyNTMxMUgyVkNDTjNVNUtWJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
My guess is your ball lost some air and is now 0.5 to 1 PSI less than it was. add some air and it should be good
Best and cheap don’t mix. If you’re going for an outdoor ball, don’t buy leather; get something that will last. If you’re going indoor, get The Rock. It’s like 60$ and my favorite ball to play with indoors.
I use the Bauerfeind Genutrain, and it stays in place pretty well. Maybe a readjustment once a game if at all. It's been used by some NBA players like Dirk, Jeremy Lin, and Kobe if that counts for anything.
Like every one said: Ice.
Some guys used to get some relief from a knee band. It compresses the meniscus tendon below the knee.
Again, ice is incredible, I used to ice like crazy after practices. You can also take NSAID's like Advil if you're a bit swollen, assuming you're not allergic or anything.
You can get a Smart Basketball but they tend to be pricy. You can also buy a Shot Tracker but is only practical if you use your own basketball hoop. If you use a public court I would go with the smart basketball unless you have a step ladder and want to reattach a sensor every time you come and go. That being said, if you have your own hoop, the sensor is cheaper and probably more accurate.

I just ordered a Spalding NBA street ball and from the reviews it doesn’t seem bad. Haven’t played with it yet though, but it’s gonna be used pretty much for outdoors only
I'm 6'0 185 pounds looking for new shoes. I mainly play off the ball, run a lot in transition, and crash the boards hard on both ends. I recently sprained my right ankle badly for the second time in the past 2 years and I'm trying to take a lot better care of it this time around, starting with a new pair of shoes. I was wearing some Zoom Ascentions (these) that are a couple years old and did not really like anything in particular about them. Cost isn't a concern right now, just really looking for a general reccomendation with good ankle support since I've never owned a decent pair of basketball shoes before. Thanks.

I started using another brand in college when I noticed the funk in my shoes. I didn't want to spray them with any deodorizing sprays since I always hated those smells. Also washing them so often isn't really a viable option (I hoop like three or four times a week so they get musty quick). I figured I could build awareness to these and sell them for cheaper.
i bought this one on sale around christmas for $10. It's nice with lots of grip. I've only used it outside once or twice briefly, honestly I don't want to fuck it up. i'd say just look for sales unless you're playing on nice concrete and like sweep it off regularly. outdoor balls on asphalt and rocks and metal backboards and shit are gonna get fucked anyways.
that one basically feels like an evo but with rubber instead of the sythetic leather. it has deeper grooves too. its quite nice i almost like it more than my black evo. come to think of it i should try it out inside.
it's got super good grip too for handles or palming if you can.

This ball right here or the offical one?
https://www.amazon.com/Wilson-NCAA-Replica-Game-Basketball/dp/B002XLWE3K?th=1&psc=1
Is it better than Nike true grip? I want something as close to the evolution as possible since that is the ball our tournaments uses. I understand that the evo is a no good ball for outdoors.

probably about the same.. only if the shoe had some strange defect would it make a noticeable difference.
I got these the other day - 30 bucks, fit great, look pretty cool. If you can return your other shoes, I would absolutely do it.

This is a great ball. I own one and it's really good. Price to performance ratio, you can't go wrong with this ball.
I think this is what I have: https://www.amazon.com/Spalding-NBA-Excel-Basketball-Intermediate/...
But yeah, Spalding is the best except for some of the Wilson balls which are overpriced for what they are.
Definitely Zi/o, but you are right, they don't make them anymore. They renamed them something else, but I can't remember what.
Edit: was wrong. https://www.amazon.ca/Spalding-Official-Indoor-Outdoor-Basketball/dp/B000A7OUE0
a couple of guys i play with wear Ektio's. one of the guys was raving about the ankle support. i don't know about their weight, but he's quick if it helps any.
I brought this off Amazon after my Freshman year of HS when the varisty coached told me my two handed jumpshot was holding me back. Practiced with it for a couple of weaks and it completely fixed my flunky guide hand.
That's the only thing that worked for me. And I tried a bunch of shit before that too. Squeezing my thumb to the side of my hand, crossing my index finger behind my other fingers, etc.
For indoor: Wilson Evolution Indoor Game Basketball Official (29.5") https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009KMXWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_Ya6zwbHRMTYRW

I just tore my ACL and MCL and ice packs are already getting annoying so I might switch to something like that. It's $70 on amazon but I also found this for half the price so I'll probably give it a try instead.
I have this ball and it works well. Feels like an indoor ball, but it's durable like an outdoor ball.
