Here is a good guide for it, but basically it means if you get a characters aptitudes up to 300% through chara world, its quite easy to hit 100mil in each stat using 3 level 300 trapezohedrons that have 0 +stat growth bills passed.
I would point you in the general direction of the gamefaqs website, seeing as there are people who know a whole lot more then me about the game who have written it all down. http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/589678-disgaea-hour-of-darkness/faqs
However, since those obviously don't answer specific questions, i'll try and answer those as best I can.

As you know you can only field 10 units onto the battlefield, so having 50 units won't do you much good, but having too few back-ups can be detrimental as well.
As a general rule of thumb though, I mostly end up with roughly the following.
Some of these positions will also be filled by the main storyline characters, but it is always good to have a back-ups.
In general play you will find that even if you make 50 characters, you will simply keep falling back on a select few that simply get the job done.
I'd advise making a second healer though, and make it a priority to keep them both roughly at the same level as the group, because even though you might often only use 1, they are rather squishy, and losing your healer can certainly ruin your day if you don't have a back-up.

For levelling your newly created characters, just go back to the first chapter and use your newly created character to beat those battles to gain some experience. You can also go back to battles that would be too strong for them, but you know can be solo'd by your strongest character and just let them try and get assists on normal attacks.
But this is perhaps not the best answer, I dunno.

At your level I wouldn't go into the item world just yet. Even a relatively low level item world can be lethal if you get hit by the wrong geo's. Wait until you at least have made 1 or 2 scouts.
Transmigrate a certain mumber of levels total.
I don't know the numbers but every transmigration adds all your previous transmigration's levels and the level you were when you switched.
The number you're looking to get is 186,000 stored levels total, at least if you're trying to max out a character.
This guide has a good section of info at section 2.14. It explains how for max stats you don't need to be max level when reincarnating, except for the last two cycles, because if you aren't your yellow bars which are your carryover stats will be lower.
According to this guide it seems they recommend lower levels in general, but the lower levels seems to mean around 1500-2000 as you'll have a better time return and lower loss of skills from reincarnation.
As far as the little icons go, I know that the shoes mean how far they can move each turn and the wings are how high they can jump.
This is very hard to tell since everyone learns differently. For me was it "Remembering the Kanji" to learn recognizing the Kanji abd Kana and Genki to learn grammatical basics and vocab. Also making your own Anki deck helps in my experience.
Also visit r/LearnJapanese to get some hints.
TIL Disgaea was released on android
Seriously though, I wouldn't bother spending $32 on the android version when it's less than half that on PC (Just checked steam and it's on offer for £3).
If I were you, I'd just install a PSP emulator and download the PSP iso to play it that way.
PPSSPP is a good bet; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ppsspp.ppsspp&hl=en\_GB&gl=US
For now just a single stack of Guardians and the rest as Gladiators is fine, it's easy to reach and will give you a big boost progressing through the bonus content and starting towards X-Dimension maps.
For when your looking to make your end-game level 300 Trapezohedrons it'll look more like this.
Fencer/Musclemanx2/Pugilistx2/Sprinterx2/Patient
Guardian/Professional/Firefighter/Aeronaught/Cryophile/Musclemanx3
Pharmacist/Coffee Maker/Medicine Man/Psychologist/Social Worker/Musclemanx3
Musclemanx2/Pugilistx2/Sprinterx2/Patientx2
Using a setup like that gives you the most well rounded stat boosts, 100% critical hit rate, full resistance to all statuses and increase your elemental resistances.
It's possible to max out the stats on an item so stat boosting innocents aren't as valued late game. What a lot of people instead do is transfer Mystery Innocents onto items using Enforcers and then tame those looking for specific innocents like Sweet Tempter (recover 50% HP at the end of turn), Hand Shaker (Never miss a target) or Mode Changer (Nullify Attack damage on odd turns and Magic damage on even turns).
http://www.gamefaqs.com/vita/723483-disgaea-4-a-promise-revisited/faqs/63105 is a great guide for when your looking to really get into the item world.
From your other posts, it sounds like you're still very early in the game. I'd find an earlier level with geopanels that offer an XP boost and grind it, using the Cheat Shop to boost the level of the enemies every few rounds. The first stage where you can really start to boost your levels is 5-2, you'll be seeing a lot of that one before you finish the story. Focus on leveling up just a few characters first, then make a tower with your strongest character on the bottom to level up the others.
I'd also recommend diving into the Item World occasionally, trying to make it to at least Floor 20, so that you can Reverse Pirate the item. Reverse Pirating levels up the item by fifteen or more levels, and also the only way to get rare Innocents like Statictions that boost the XP you receive. Don't forget about Magichange. Desco fused into a sword is pretty powerful early in the game. Also, check out these guides, they're very helpful.
Oh, and yeah, you'll be grinding. I've dumped about 200 hours into he Vita port, and probably have another hundred to go before I get the Platinum trophy.
I'm sorry for the late answer, I doubled checked and it costs $48.17 but it ships from the US (shipping fee of $3.95), I don't know if the CA ver. and US ver. are different enough tho.

Let me start with a disclaimer saying I haven't played much of Hour/Afternoon of Darkness. With that out of the way, I'll try and point you to some resources that should be quite handy since nobody else has done so yet. I can't vouch for the in-game tutorials since I don't recall them, so maybe someone else can cover me there.
There is a starred guide on GameFAQs written by Richard Beast that seems to cover pretty much everything you could need to know, from basics to endgame stuff. It couldn't hurt to read over this a bit. Even if a lot of things don't stick, it'll give you way more insight into tactics and mechanics.
If you want something in video format, HCBailly did a playthrough of Afternoon of Darkness about a year ago. If you don't mind his personality/voice, his walkthroughs of RPGs are always amazingly well planned out and informative. I haven't personally watched it, but everything else that he's done has been very good.
And finally, just mess around on your own for a while! Some things will just become apparent with experience, so don't let all the depth overwhelm you. Geo panels/symbols seem really confusing, but with time you'll be able to set up Geo Chains with (relative) ease.
Other people can probably offer better advice and whatnot than me, but these sources should be pretty handy. If you have any questions this Reddit is plenty capable of answering them if they choose to, so just drop a line.
Go to your save file data, copy the save file onto a usb and upload the save file somewhere (like mediafire)
The second method here should help: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-back-up-and-import-ps3-game-saves/
I really appreciate the help and the response.
You can get a bundle of 1 & 2 on GMG for a bit cheaper than buying both on the current Steam winter sale: https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/disgaea-disgaea-2/ (they sell steam keys).
That depends on preference.
Guns = Speed and Hit in 4 Bows = ATK and Hit in 4. Fists = ATK and Speed in all of them Axes are pure ATK, but you sacrifice speed Swords are also pure ATK Staves are pure int Spears are attack, but also give you defence.
Monster weapons, Red for ATK, Blue for ATK and Int

Here is a quick cheat sheet, though I'm not sure how accurate this one is since I'm currently playing Disgaea 4.
Oh yeah. PS3 has been decent for the last few years and has only improved since... the Compatibility list has nearly 60% of all games at a playable state at this point.
Only current one I know of for Xbox (after a bit of Google searching) is Xenia... and I have no idea how well that one runs.
Disgaea 6 (eshop): https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/disgaea-6-defiance-of-destiny-switch/ (not a referral link)
Disgaea 6 (physical edition) is 33% off on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Disgaea-Defiance-Destiny-Unrelenting-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B08JJ17W8F/ (not a referral link)
To each their own... but as much as I love Disgaea games, I don't think anyone really plays them for the stories. They're somewhat of an afterthought for these games. The strategy/combat is Disgaea's bread and butter.
That being said, WeMod has a D5 trainer (along with tons of other game trainers) built-in. That's probably your best bet.
Amazon has it: https://www.amazon.com/DISGAEArt-Disgaea-Official-Illustration-Collection/dp/1926778502/
Looking at the related down at the bottom, it looks like there are several Disgaea specific game artbooks and at least 3 Takehito Harada art books.
I don't see any Ryoji Majima artbooks, however. Sadness. (Too hot for Amazon, I guess.)
Also, uh, wow. Shigenori Soejima (the artist behind Persona), the art of Bravely Default, Tactics Ogre Artworks, FF DOT, Art of Mana, Breath of Fire... Wow. I never realized there were so many artbooks being brought over to the US.
I've found one on Amazon.uk for you, if you like
>I don't have a console or a portable system, but I'd probably buy one for a more refined version of this, are the mobile ones good?
You probably get the most gameplay for your money if you get a used PS3 for ~100$/€ and the Disgaea Triple Pack (Disgaea 3+5+d2d) for ~35$/€.
Though, with a bit of luck, it may very well be possible that the other Disgaea games will also be ported to the PC.
