I am really deep inside that philosophy for few years. I recommend you to try this book: https://www.amazon.com/Little-Book-Stoicism-Resilience-Confidence-ebook/dp/B07MY2VFQD Great straightforward introduction. You could also dig into rabbit hole thorough the subreddit, they have FAQ for example.
Yeah. Thought about this and tried it.
Like the comments said, you actually use your phone for a lot more than the apps your addicted to.
For me it was simple things like GPS or quick calculations or to take photos. There’s old flip phones that have calculators and cameras (what I used) but the quality is shit and the calculator was slow.
There’s some options for higher quality phones. Here’s something that I looked into: https://www.amazon.ca/MP02-Generation-Minimalist-Unlocked-Multiband/dp/B09NRKVYF4/ref=asc_df_B09NRKVYF4/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=601747797358&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14637535504072042274&hvpone=&hvptwo=&... look around, don’t give up if you think it’d benefit you. I’d say try it, it’ll teach you a lot. Do your homework and figure out if there’s tech that can support your want.
Good luck.
I am myself doing the same, but with the understanding of why and how. Besides, reading science-oriented books about this topic will help us to understand the culprits behind all the craving we are suffering rather than speaking to someone else, since it will take a lot of time to understand one's situation and be able to share the spirit. Currently I'm reading a book call "The Molecule of More" (https://www.amazon.com/Molecule-More-Chemical-Creativity-Determine-ebook/dp/B077ZCGT8N/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=the+molecule+of+more&qid=1641815729&s=digital-text&sprefix=the+molec%2Cdigital-text%2C164&sr=1-1) . For me, this book provides a deeper view of myself and then I can figure out the way out of addictive paths or choose a "suitable and healthy addictive goals/ targets/ paths". Hope it helps.
Why don't you block social media and other distracting sites on your computer? This is not a complete solution, but atleast it will allow you to work. Usually I block these sites by entering them in my /etc/hosts file (on linux, windows has same 'etc/host' file. Not sure of the location).
And you can find various consolidated lists on github. Example: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts
You should get cold turkey! It blocks you from any chosen app or website accessible to your computer. Use the timer feature so willpower is out of the question and you can only access what you need to stay focused on writing your thesis. It can lock u out of your computer for a set time if you ever choose and it's free!
I'm facing a similar problem as I have some work to finish by early next week. I'm trying to end as much work as possible today, but in case I won't I will go flight mode + ActivityWatch and its browser extension. It's an open-source program that runs in the background and tracks everything that you have open on your pc. You can use it to keep yourself accountable, i.e. if you open Steam or go to reddit it will be registered.
Thank you all for your helpful replies. Have never been disciplined enough to stick to meditation but will make an effort to stick to it. Am also due to see a CBT therapist soon.
Someone also recommended this book on CBT which I’ve just ordered: Mind Over Mood: Change How You Feel by Changing the Way You Think https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1462520421/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_0NXT5261T96NC1WPK9AR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you for your kind thoughts and wishes.
Stay well, each of you.
