Hear me out. Get off the internet for awhile, https://getcoldturkey.com/, keep your t.v. off and unwind however you like to that doesn't involve things that make you angry. Get out into nature if you can.
You seem like you've got a desperate belief system that's poisoning you. It's no different than any purely hateful set of bad ideas because it comes from a good place. I can tell that you want to do good, and that you've found something to point a finger at and say "this is the root of all evil", but the way you're acting isn't doing any favors for the cause you support or yourself.
I don't like to give advice people don't ask for, but really bro, rest, you need it. And after that, channel your strong will to make a change into an absolute positive; volunteer, plant a garden, learn to program, whatever floats your boat.
PM if you want to talk more, you name the topic, i'm not picky.
Treat it like you would treat an addiction.
Most importantly, find a new hobby to eat up the time you're now going to have - preferably a productive one.
Second most important thing is not being extremely harsh on yourself when you fall into these same patterns while trying to quit, that's gonna happen and it's normal - you've got neural pathways formed in your head from playing games for so long so you'll end up doing it and so it's gonna take a long time for them to rot away you just have to keep at it and try attacking the problem from different angles.
Different angles like say you try quitting instantly and fall back into old patterns, you need to try tapering it off instead - so for example let's say you play 3 hours usually, you decide only 2 hours of gaming today, then slowly reduce it over weeks and months. Aim very low, the lowest you can continue to do then take another step when you're comfortable. It's gonna be a long process.
If you'd like to try an Program to limit things then Cold Turkey is one I would recommend.
Every Sunday I plan my week out. No matter what I do, I cannot muster anything effort to do anything on the weekend. Therefore, my life revolves around M-F. Being electronic, I can drag around things in case something comes up or I need more time on an assignment. The night before, I check to see what I'll be doing the next day before packing my bag.
I study in 1 hour blocks with 15 minutes for a break. I never do the same thing in a row, as I start to lose focus and get bored with a task. I move on to something else, then go back at it the next block if necessary. I don't leave the library unless I'm going home or to class. I'm taking a smaller amount of credits, as I wanted to see if this plan would work out before attempting this with a larger course load (it does).
ColdTurkey is essential to everything. Without it activated, I instantly go to reddit and procrastinate. You cannot uninstall the app while a block is in progress, nor can you stop the block early.
As you can see from my schedule, there's plenty of time to go out to eat and party afterwards. Of course, being the unsociable loser I am, I just spend that time programming or browsing reddit. I get a good night's sleep, I shower, I'm never late to class, etc etc. I found the tip that you should treat college like a full time job, thus I started to apply it. For example, if you have 3 hours of classes that day, spend 5 hours studying. Works wonders.
TL;DR
Plan out your week.
Pack for the day's to-do.
Use Cold Turkey. It notifies you when you can access blocked content again. This let's me know when my break is starting.
College is a full time job. Treat it like one.
https://getcoldturkey.com/ can be a useful program for this. You can just blanket block certain websites on your laptop for a period of time These websites are very addictive and sometimes we need help to take our minds back!
God speed and good luck.
If you need help taking control of your computer back from mindless distractions there's apps that can help with that.
Self Control is a completely free, open source program written for Macs that lets you restrict access.
Windows also has Cold Turkey which is freeware program with a premium option that includes things like scheduling so that you restrict your greatness on Reddit to only an hour a week. While I'm normally against subscription services this comes to less than a dollar a month for three years.
In general, you can block websites for 1-24hrs using either:
https://getcoldturkey.com/ (windows)
But if your exam is tomorrow morning, you are better off doing just two things:
1) Take 1 hour and make a 8.5x11" (or A1) sheet of paper cramming all of the formulas or facts you want to be able to take into the exam.
2) Set two alarms and go the fuck to sleep.
Exactly. I have the same problem. But I am not willing to toss out my phone. I like to play sports. So maybe you can try that as well. What you might be looking for is an internet restriction app. For example this one: https://getcoldturkey.com/ It at least will stop you from browsing endlessly.
Actually Overwatch (& Rocket League) has also been a problem for me - and I have used software to curb my gaming habit. On Mac I use the ironically named SelfControl, and on PC I use ColdTurkey, both of which block applications.
Existential dread, though... still searching for a software fix for that.
I've found Vyvanse gives me a ton of anxiety whereas Adderall relaxes me. The anxiety was translating into changing some habits to accommodate it.
For your situation, and everyone's for that matter, the medication helps us reorient how we spend our time.
Old habits that we implemented either as a protective mechanism or a strategy to deal with our ADHD (I was diagnosed as an adult too) need to be re-evaluated.
If you don't like time spent on a computer but did an insane amount of gaming, doomscrolling, social media browsing, fleeting interest research and online shopping, the meds won't help you put a block on your computer. Those choices are still ours.
But meds will help you fill the time with intentional activities like cleaning while listening to music or talking on the phone with a friend.
If you, even after some buildup of angst and regret, decide you want to limit how much you can online shop, there are application blockers and programs like Cold Turkey that will allow you to limit how much you can spend time you can spend playing video games.
Cold Turkey in particular has been good for me because I can set allowances such as for streaming in the evenings with a hard cut-off after 25 minutes and a harder cut-off at 10pm for lights out/reading etc.
Ultimately, experiment with your habits with intention and see what works once, then twice, and start thinking about how you could chain habits together to form healthier routines.
Cold Turkey is exactly what you are looking for. It physically prevents you from opening applications or certain websites at set times.
Once you set a block you can choose to lock the block which cannot be removed even using command prompt
There's applications like Cold Turkey that can be used to block distracting websites and applications. The hard part I've found (for me at least), is becoming motivated enough to turn them on in the first place
Go here:
Get the app
Set it up so that your Youtube time is limited to a few hours a day at a designated time. (5-7pm every day for instance).
You want every other hour besides the designated time to block youtube. You may as well do the same thing for Reddit.
Do it and stick to it. The app will not let you access those websites outside the designated time period. The only way to stop it from doing this is by deleting it off your computer.
Give it a week or two and your "obsession" will become much more controllable.
Install this. You don't even have to use it yet. But just having it within reach makes it easier to use. If you ever need anything done, but find yourself always putting it off and doing things on your computer, it only takes that brief moment of "Dangit why do I keep putting this off" to turn the thing on - taking less courage than it'll take to actually start your activity. And that's a step you'll take much more easily when it's actually installed.
grabs shoulders
DUDE. You have control over how you spend your time. I'm going to give you some tools to help you, but you need to use them.
1) Download either https://getcoldturkey.com/ (windows) or https://selfcontrolapp.com (OSX) and use it to block reddit for 12 hours. Then, add facebook for good measure.
2) Get up, do 5 jumping jacks, then jump into a fighting stance and shout "HA!"
3) Grab a piece of blank paper and a pencil. Write down what your overall task is. Then, break that down into chunks. Underline any chunks that you feel like you are dreading or that you are confused about. For those parts you just underlined, write out whom you could ask for help or what questions you have about them. Same thing for the confusing things.
4) Turn this into a list of concrete tasks. Put empty squares as bullet points on the left. Put tasks like "write an email to Mr. Wigglyboobs asking about the thing he said about phallic imagery." at the top because you want to get those our first so someone can get back to you.
5) Do you need to use your laptop? Are you sure? Okay. Go to https://appear.in/pophoptop15, move your mouse over your face, then click the button that looks like a laptop and share your entire screen. Find a friend and pay them $15 to go to the same URL and yell at your if your screen shows you doing anything anything but writing your goddamn essay.
That is why you should get off reddit as a whole. Don't lurk, don't read here or any subs that make you feel worse. Fix your addiction. Only you can fix it. In fact, block reddit entirely with this free desktop application
> videos of woman having sex with dogs
I have no real advice for you, but let me tell you that the "women" who made those videos are unironically possessed by demons. You fell right into a Satanic soul-snatching trap and now look at you, getting ready to #ill yourself and leave this planet forever.
I don't care if you're not a Christian or don't believe in God, go read Psalms. If you don't own a physical bible here's a link: Psalms. Start by using a website blocker. I personally use Cold Turkey to block websites I'll be too tempted to visit.
Hey. As a former social media addict, I can give you some advice I think:
I hope this helps! Have a good day and good luck :)
Yes. I used to have it much worse, but I got rid of my smartphone and just have an old nokia now. I got rid of my social media, so my internet usage is basically reddit and nothing else. That's a habit I still need to break. I actually have paid for Cold Turkey - https://getcoldturkey.com/ which works really really well (I recommend it), but I'll find any workaround to read Reddit, including using the internet broswer on the xbox or PS4
You could install cold turkey. It blocks certain websites for a set period of time.
If you find yourself using reddit on your phone too often you should consider uninstalling it. You're not missing out on much.
If you're Mac or Windows you could use the [Freedom App](freedom.to). It blocks the sites you want both on desktop and iPhone, according to a schedule you set. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on Linux, so I had to stop using it. Other options are Cold Turkey (Mac and Windows), StayFocusd (Chrome extension) and Leechblock (Firefox addon).
Hey there, Stuart the cartoonist here. Saw you were linking to me.
Thought you might also like my associated blog post Choosing an internet-blocked daily routine, which expands on the system that I use. The particular browser-blocker is Cold Turkey
FYI, I will soon release similar comics on other aspects of how I use social media and technology in my lifestyle.
https://getcoldturkey.com/ for windows and mac - has website blocking for free, as well as program blocking and scheduling if you pay.
idk about iphone but the easiest way to not waste time on your phone is to not take it in to school.
A few days I purchased Cold Turkey, a productivity/blocker program that has thus far been helping me out more than similar apps have (among other advantages, it also blocks non-web programs). I recommend it if you have a problem with procrastination.
Cold Turkey is a pretty difficult blocker to get around, as it can make itself unable to be installed while timers are running. The free version is pretty good if you're just looking to block a smallish number of high-priority websites (YouTube), works with VPNs, etc. The Pro version (one time flat fee of $25) lets you have scheduled breaks, or a fixed amount of browsing time, as well as a full PC lockout.
FocusMe is similar, and also works on Android devices, but is slightly more pricey for a lifetime license, but also comes as a subscription model.
As far as tackling the addiction itself, he's 10 and his brain won't be finished developing for at least another 10 years, so it's expected for 10 year olds to have poor impulse control. You need to be his impulse control.
I wanna make a shoutout to Cold Turkey, it's an amazing app for productivity that allows you to block applications, domains and even block you out of you computer on scheduled times.
Try Cold Turkey. I also try to make it a hassle to turn on the computer in the morning. I have a laptop so I either unplug and put the charger away somewhere or put away the laptop itself.
Also, if you need a more robust blocker I recommend Cold Turkey, you can block any website or program, set timers, create schedules, and then lock it so you can’t get around it. I’ve been using it for years, it’s been a huge help for me!
I know it's hard but try to have compassion for yourself.
I was doing this constantly related to one specific complication of a medical condition that I do have. The only thing that helped me was setting up blocks for searches using add-ons like BlockSite and Cold Turkey. They let you block by keywords/phrases and certain websites, and while it's not a perfect system, it certainly makes it much harder for me to get caught in those spirals now!
try out this browser extension that makes YouTube less distracting.
Also this app cold turkey that blocks distractions

I was kinda in the same situation as you and I kinda substituted the feeling of needing to consume information by listening to audiobooks instead. Websites like YouTube and reddit are designed to be addictive, so it's not your fault that you have fallen for the trap. I recommend this book called Irresistible by Adam Alter that goes deeper into this issue. Free audiobook link here.
I have a block installed, this is a good one: https://getcoldturkey.com/
I just stop the problem at the source. If I cannot access P, then I cannot watch it, haha.
This journey is a tough one. But you are strong. Stay strong and beat this!
Good luck.
I've been trying to remove distractions as well. For me it's reddit and COD MP, also checking my investments in stocks and crypto. Reddit is the one I'm the worst with, I can quite literally spend several hours a day on reddit, and have spent entire days from waking up to going to bed just doomscrolling through reddit.
Anyway, the first thing I did was remove reddit from my phone and tablet, and when I want to "waste time" on those devices I now only fire up Kindle and read books. It's definitely helped me in the sense that I'm not "feeding the wrong beast" as much as I was before, so even when I'm at my PC I don't check reddit as much, such as looking for comment replies, etc. I'm just not as invested.
I've also downloaded Cold Turkey for my PC and checked it out, but haven't started using it yet. Thank you for your post, because when I get to work today I'm going to set it up again and try to stick to it. The way I want to have it is 50 minutes of work, 10 minute break to check stuff and get up and walk or get a coffee.
I'm trying for baby steps, and I see that when one baby step has results that it builds on the foundation and motivates me to stop seeking the dopamine hit all the time, or perhaps getting it from...being productive!
Let's do this, I'm working on it to. Best of luck, now back to work!
https://getcoldturkey.com/ + something you can play with with your hands such as a fidget toy. I tend to use lofi hiphop too to keep a neutral noise.
Made this a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/ADHD/comments/hatlla/software_for_working_with_an_adhd_brain
When I was in school, I ran into the problem of distractions all the time. We're all stressed out, the work is hard, and it becomes easy to want to take a quick break that turns into a longer one and so on. I'd highly suggest an app like Cold Turkey, Self Control, etc.
You set your trouble websites like YouTube, Facebook, (ahem, Reddit...) and then set a timer for however long you want them to be blocked. It's helpful for the whole academic year, and especially during crunch time.
Hey man, if you feel like it’s something that’s beyond your control you could look into some sort of blocking service. After a quick Google I found this: https://getcoldturkey.com
I didn’t do a whole lot of research but I’m sure that or something similar exists that will allow you to only enable apps/games during certain windows. Maybe limit the times you can play games to between 6-9pm or something?
Make these distractions difficult to do, if it's gaming then unplug your console. The time it takes to plug it in will cause you to reflect and evaluate its value which will hopefully make you resist.
If it's watching youtube or going on reddit/any website then get a blocking app like Cold Turkey
I wouldn't say full on addicted, but I do use something with a screen for just about everything I do, so the temptation to get lost on Reddit or YouTube or whatever can be strong.
https://getcoldturkey.com/ has been helpful to me. I have it set up to just shut off most of the things I don't need when I don't need them. It makes accidentally getting caught up in digital time wasting quite a bit more difficult.
The only reason I have social media is to post my photography periodically. If I stopped photography, I would delete my accounts. I have facebook, instagram, flickr, and reddit. I use a lot of technology to limit my use and make it more intentional:
Maybe this seems extreme, but I've had pretty bad problems wasting time on it.
Check out /r/nosurf if you're interested in a community on this topic.
For content blockers, hands down the best one I have ever used is Cold Turkey. Not only does it block websites, but any program that may distract you (mainly video games). The free version works well enough, but I bought the Pro version for $20 and have gotten more than its worth out of it over the course of two years.
Use COLD TURKEY, it blocks anything you want to stop in your computer. Basically a program that you cant delete and blocks your thing you're distracted from. You can set the time you want your thing to be blocked for. Really useful in my opinion to combat game addiction.
Quit it straight away, it'll be hard but trust me it's worth it. A few clicks and you're on your way to go up the rollercoaster of life.
After that, exercise more, eat a more healthy diet nutrition.com, exercising is another form of "gaming" because gaming itself is an anti-depressant as well as exercising. If you get depressed when you stop gaming, exercise because it releases the happiness hormones into your brain to make balance your depressed/happy state. Even exercising for 20 minutes a day can improve everything in your body; makes you more energised in other words. Exercise everyday forever, you will see changes after 1 month of excersing 20 minutes a day with a healthy diet.
Challenge QUIT for 1 month, NO EXCUSES!
Extra: There's also a 3... 2.... 1 trick that will work if you do it more and more, if your too hesitant to exercise but you want to, count down 3...2.... 1 in your head and when that 1 hits DO IT, it works for everything like taking out the rubbish 3.... 2.... 1- Drop everything and DO IT. Click on the COLD TURKEY 3....2..... 1 - CLICK IT
the download button 3... 2.... 1 CLICK IT. You get the gist of it.
If you do it more often you can NOT PROCRASTINATE easily.
As others have said, it does take practice (writing is a muscle, and all that.) But in more immediate terms, the two things that have helped me most are:
1) Cold Turkey Writer: https://getcoldturkey.com/writer/ - It gives you the option to base your sprints either on time or on wordcount. I mostly do thousand word sprints, which take me 20-25 minutes, or if I'm sprinting with others (see below) it's usually 20 minute timed sprints.
2) Accountability groups / sprinting with others. Writing is lonely but somehow working with other people makes it easier. You can meet people on here, or on other forums, and some have challenges that you can join. Last month I wrote 50k in a week just because I was in a challenge and the competitive part of my nature refused to let me lose. :)
If you get past a certain point (it varies between 14 days and 1 month), it gets easier to keep going. If you don't already, try using blocking software like K9 or Cold Turkey. I prefer K9 because I can block everything porn-related with a difficult and long password. I write the password down and store it somewhere so it would take me at least 5 minutes to get to.
Also, try counting your streak, look at that number and understand that the only way you will feel better is if that streak-number gets higher and higher. If you want an emergency-button for difficult times, read this and consider joining us.
We all have difficult times, you will be fine. Good luck.
Good suggestion on using Cold Turkey! It's an amazing blocker application that's made for just this kind of occasion where you have distractions or impulses to keep checking reddit. I'm a mega fan of it.
Although I never found a permanent solution before medication and before I even knew ADHD was a thing, I now look back and see that Cold Turkey was the most effective productive tool/technique I ever put into use. I still use it, even on meds, specifically to block Reddit.
It blocks websites AND applications, and it's tamper proof for computer-savvy people.
Here are my two cents. Getting help is absolutely okay, help in the form of psychiatry (possibly go on antidepressants), counseling, etc. These are things I wish I had done when I was in University, leaving mental health issues simmering is a recipe for disaster.
One book suggestion I might make is Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke, MD. This is currently what has helped me the most. I think the problem for me is I have many addictive behaviours (sweets/treats, netflix/youtube, porn, videogames) and these all overtax the dopamine system and if I only give up one of them then my dopamine system doesn't nearly normalize enough for me to kick the habit. So I am currently trying to kick all of them. Once your reward system normalizes then you will find normal stimuli such as school rewarding again.
One tool I use which helps a lot is Cold Turkey (https://getcoldturkey.com/) you can add youtube to a block list and I think there is even a way to create a block list for porn sites. One thing I find great is you can set it to block until a certain date in the future and lock it so it is extremely hard to unblock.
Hope you find this helpful!
Have you tried Cold Turkey Blocker?
It automatically quits the apps that are not allowed (you can add all your apps). It does the same thing with websites.
I procrastinated a lot on writing, and now it is magic. You just set a limit of say 30 min of non stop writing, and you can't get distracted with research.
I had a problem with full-on blockers though because I need to communicate for work. So I need to block unread, but still be able to message. I had to build an app to hide messages for that.
I used https://getcoldturkey.com. Cold Turkey offers a more aggressive solution for free. You can even block the entire Internet with this program, if you’d want to do that. Honestly a quick google search would help you find different ways to block certain websites and adult content, even your own wifi router. I’d suggest looking around firstly and seeing what tickles you.
Have you tried deleting all your VPNs and then blocking the websites from which you bought the VPNs so you can't buy it again?
A blocking software I would highly recommend is Cold Turkey (getcoldturkey.com), which is arguably the best blocking software out there (very difficult to bypass) for a very reasonable one-time price. The amount of money this software saved me paid for itself probably 1000 folds. It also helped me go to achieve a regular sleep schedule (it has a feature called Frozen Turkey that literally shuts down your computer and shuts you out once the scheduled time hits).

Hey! I was so addicted to gaming and started to play everytime I had a chance to. The lockdown made me get more involved into gaming. I became insanely addicted and started raging over small stuff. I lost my focus and concentration. I lost interest in things. I used to be in the top 5 in my class before I started seriously gaming, but now I struggle to understand even the basic concepts. My marks dropped to an all time low and I could not sit in a place for more than 20 min . I went out of control. A few days back I installed a blocker and purchased the pro version for it( Cold turkey). And now I am out of gaming for a week. You will feel the urge to go back to gaming . But as he said.. Its not worth it. Control it, if not install a blocker . You will feel the change in a few months.
Here is the link if you want to know more abt the blocker.. (Not promoting..I am not paid to promote this) : https://getcoldturkey.com/pricing/
Good luck!
Well , I Think the free version can get the work done . https://getcoldturkey.com/pricing/
Initially it is difficult to know the settings , but after learning it will be easy.
I personally blocked the whole internet ,till a specific time , then whitelist the sites which i used.
I am assuming you're masturbating to images online because that is what 99% of people do, including myself. People are going to tell you to pray every time you're tempted or something, and you definitely should. However, that's just a given and not specific advice.
Get some basics down. Specifically: GET A WEBBLOCKER. I've had trouble with porn all through my teens and am only making real progress after I downloaded a webblocker. I repeat, GET A WEBBLOCKER. I use getcoldturkey.com because it's simple and impossible to bypass.
Been there, done that.
You need to remove the temptations and distractions.
Install a website blocker on your PC and blacklost any sites that you habitually visit during coding time (e.g reddit). I’ve found https://getcoldturkey.com/ to be good.
Or, if you’re a cheapskate like me, open up /etc/hosts and set any domain you wish to block to 0.0.0.0
If you phone is distracting you as well, set it to silent and put it into another room.
As for food, that’s a tough one. Perhaps only keep a small stash of snacks, once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Use https://getcoldturkey.com/ it's merciless and very flexible especially if you pay around 30 bucks for the lifetime premium license. You can block Youtube on a schedule, allow yourself 10 minutes a day, whatever you want. Just have to install and set up on all your devices.
I think environment is very important to resisting bad habits (procrastination), I first came across this idea in James Clear's Atomic Habits. One thing I can tell you that worked for me recently is using Cold Turkey software https://getcoldturkey.com/ to block access to distracting websites/applications, you can even lock them so you can't access them for a certain time (you can't even uninstall). I lock things like youtube/other distractions from 9-5 as these are my studying hours. When I know these things are blocked it takes much less willpower to stick to a task I'm doing that I'm not finding particularly entertaining.
Another environment changeup I can think of is forcing yourself to study in the library, if you're anything like me I find myself much more productive if I'm in the library as everyone around me is studying, if I do find myself scrolling insta/fb it won't be for nearly as long as it is at home. I also use the Pomodoro technique at the library which I struggle to do when I'm at home due to the many distractions.
Wish you the best!!
The first days are usually the hardest. Good on you for making to 4-days though. Many give up, but you will keep on trying!
A blocker helped me. Here is mine: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Do your research. Learn what works, change what doesn't.
Good luck.
We were all in your shoes. Lowest of the lows. But you will make it through.
Try out a blocker. That is what brought me out. Here is mine: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Do your research. Learn from mistakes. Make necessary changes.
Good luck!
Cold Turkey by Felix
It's cheap for the premium version and operates at the rootkit level and prevents you from uninstalling it during an active block. The Developer is very responsive to help requests. It also has wildcard filtering so you can block certain search terms or general words in URLs. If you get it, LMK, I can send you a list of my filtered terms. Of course, one of the things you gotta be mindful for is proxy websites which inevitably let you get around your own blocks so I have ultimately compiled a proper list that filters out a lot of what I've come across making times I mess up an absolute chore trying to get around my own blocks.
Go ahead and get it and message me and we'll connect over discord where I'll send you a zip.
Also stop using Chrome and switch to Brave.
I am now realizing that this is a MAC app, apparently
https://github.com/ParkerK/selfrestraint/
is recommended by the maker of and based on selfcontrol. He also recommends https://getcoldturkey.com/
Sometimes, you need another party to make sure that you don't peek. There are two main options: either 1. have an accountability partner that can bring you back to reality when the urges hit or 2. you can get a blocker.
If you pick option 1., I suggest that you post a "looking for accountability post," with that flair.
If you pick option 2., there are many options. Here is mine: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Good luck, you got this!
We hear you. You got this!
Learn from mistakes. Don't make them again. Make necessary changes.
I found it helpful to install a blocker. Here is mine: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Do your research. See what works for you.
Good luck soldier!
We here you and can help.
You aren't pathetic. You are brave for making your voice heard.
Try out a blocker, it helped me out a lot. Here is mine: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Figure out what works and stop doing what doesn't.
You got this.
I was the same way. Had a month-long streak for a while, then stumbled for even longer.
But you are able to beat this. You are stronger than it. Prove yourself.
You might want a blocker, here is the one that I use: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Find what works and what doesn't. Change what you need to.
You got this.
*Edit: Grammar
I am not at a month, but I am half-way. Hopefully that will suffice!
Regardless, I installed a blocker (https://getcoldturkey.com/), started to exercise daily, and avoid habits that caused PMO. For me, those PMO habits were laying on my bed. That is where the nasty happened, so I now lay on my floor instead. Make changes to your life.
Another point that helped my progress is that I have been talking to a girl. Great to talk anyone while being locked at home most of the day. You don't have to find a potential love interest to talk to, just someone. Enjoy your talks and keep yourself busy.
Good luck and stay strong.
Check this blocker out:
There is a free version and a paid one. You can block with password (I think you need to pay if you want a password though).
Already has some websites that it blocks that you can change yourself. It has helped me a ton.
I'd recommend an internet blocker to start. It worked best for me. This is a good one, it also has a premium version if you want it:
The first step is noticing that you have a problem. The next is making small steps in the right direction - lowering exposure to P and reducing your MO.
I'm currently in the thick of it, desperately cranking out the last couple dozen pages of my thesis for a looming deadline in two weeks, but I just want you to know you're not alone. I was in the exact same position this time last year with my first-year thesis.
Start small. Create the overarching chapter structure, edit the table of contents, throw in a few bullet-point notes here and there with thoughts on what you might insert into the sections themselves. Gloss over your data and scribble down in the thesis document itself whatever happens to catch your eye.
Beyond that, try establishing a strict schedule and set location where you do nothing - and I mean nothing - but sit at your computer and try to work. For me, it's waking up at 7:30 every morning, making my coffee, putting my phone in another room, turning on Coldturkey, and sifting over articles until I feel inspired enough to vomit out some words on the page. Need a break? By all means take it, but don't do it in the same place you work. Want to decompress with a game? Do it in another room, taking your laptop with you if you have to. Want to watch Youtube or Netflix for a bit? Do what you gotta do - but make sure you do it somewhere else.
I'm not saying these methods are a magic pill, but I managed to crank out the entirety of my 79-page thesis last year from complete scratch - research data and all - in one month by doing this. It was one of the worst experiences of my life, and I highly recommend you start trying to establish this sort of working schedule now to avoid it, but I ended up getting highest marks and obtained my first-year diploma with highest honors. There's no panacea for this sort of thing, but it's surmountable.
You got this.
Here is the EasyPeasy book, its helped a lot of brothers and with its help, I've been completely P clean Alhamdulilah. In general I would advise against changing your routine too much, because that might make it harder in the long run, but deleting or restricting your Instagram/social media definitely helps. You can also try this blocker for your internet, to restrict your access to sites. May Allah make your journey easy!
Delete and block all apps that will tempt you, use this app for your desktop; https://www.covenanteyes.com/ https://getcoldturkey.com/
If you have to get someone to keep your devices and read the bible.
Also look at it like this, is a few seconds of pleasure worth 1-2 weeks of regret and shame?
Above all pray, pray,pray.
You can do this!
https://getcoldturkey.com/. This is what I use. I highly recommend it. Blocks all websites and prevents you from going to watch porn. Definitely worth the money as well if you want to support the developer
I am not affiliated with this program, but I find it to be very useful. You could have them set a password for a certain block, you can set a daily time limit, you can set limits on what time of day the blocks will be active, you can block both websites and applications. And it is very, very hard to get around when set up properly with all the safeguards in place.
I just used this site to block all of my shopping addictions and it ain't messing around. Best one I've used and I cant get around it. Thought I'd share: https://getcoldturkey.com
One really simple tool that has been helping a lot is Cold Turkey Writer. Which is literally just a word processor that can lock your computer for a certain amount of time or until you've written a specified number of words. You can also apply this to open files so it's not like you have to start a new section of writing every time.
I think you can get it for both Mac and Windows (not sure if there are any comparable Android or iOS apps as I only write on my laptop) but here's the link to the site :) https://getcoldturkey.com/writer/
I use this every so often https://getcoldturkey.com/ use it to block steam so you can still use your PC. Personally I give myself a few hours on a sunday to play games but limit it to just that.
I used to spend a significant amount of time procrastinating and was very frustrated with myself. I now spend basically no time due to some tools and habits I have.
1) Every night as part of my wind-down routine, I turn https://selfcontrolapp.com/ on my work laptop.
2) I have Freedom on my phone to automatically block distracting websites from 8:30am-7:30pm.
3) When I start a new project, I'm very keen to scope it out, look ahead to potential roadblocks, and write questions for my coworkers on about those.
I hear that https://getcoldturkey.com/ works as a website blocker for Windows.
> Are there apps like that?
Yes, and they're my saving grace, because I'm terrible about reaching the end of a sentence, thinking "It's time for a break!", and then not getting back to my work for another hour. I find that if I know I'm not allowed to do anything until I write, say, 2k, then I crack down and get it done in record time. My favorite one is called Cold Turkey and the basic software that blocks your computer till you write a certain amount is free (it's the version I use), though you can pay more for a pro version if you want ambient noises, font formatting, themes, etc.
There's also one called DarkRoom that's more flexible; i.e. you can exit out of it and then resume whenever you need to. I used that for a while before moving to Cold Turkey and it's a good option if you're already pretty good about staying on task once you start.
Maybe get your family or a friend/trusted mutual to deal with the ticketing situation? I know this is an once in a lifetime event but grades first.
kpop avoidance tips? Turn off your smartphone. Entertainment can wait, its only a matter of what? 30 days, then binge all you want. If you need your computer/internet access, use cold turkey to block all your distractions and block site to redirect to idk some education related site/khan academy etc.
Good luck with your exams, you can do it. Revise, revise, revise and take timed tests.
"Do... or do not. There is no try." - Yoda
I think if you are admitting you can't get off the internet, it's proof it's necessary. You must do it!
I haven't tried it yet since im dabbling with the idea of quitting but this program seems cool.
from the bottom of the features page:
"Exceptions and white listing Websites can be added to the exceptions list if you'd like to access to them when they would otherwise be blocked. For example if reddit.com is blocked, but you still want to access a subreddit: reddit.com/r/getmotivated"
There's an app that I installed on my PC to block all game related topics. You build a list in it and set a date to run to then ding it prevents it. I uninstalled origin and steam. Before blocking their sites with Cold Turkey. Now I can't redownload either client, is good. They also have an app designed to prevent your smartphone access for a few minutes at a time. So if get the itch to reinstall clash of clans, just click the turkey and no access to the phone until the time runs out. Could help you reaffirm control. Good luck on your journey. SelfControl for Mac, or ColdTurkey for PC to handle your internet distractions.
Go somewhere else to study like a local library or coffee shop. Changing environments can help tremendously and even making a 'big deal' out of it because you go all the way out there to do this thing, you may as well do the damn thing now.
I actually recently put together a 7 step checklist to end procrastination and start taking action, if you're interested let me know and I'll PM it to you.
Have also wrote a few answers on Quora previously on best study tips/advice so I can also send them through if you'd like.
To help with the intimidation, break everything down into smaller steps. So there's this big exam you need to do, okay what is the first section or chapter you need to tackle?
Just focus on doing that, gather all your materials, install the above apps/programs to block out your mindless surfing sites, go somewhere else and get started. Half the battle really is getting started, once you've started and have momentum going you realize how painless it actually is and that makes it much easier to keep going.
I've found the ColdTurkey (https://getcoldturkey.com) for desktops, and Freedom (https://freedom.to) for the phone to be great to help curb unwanted internet usage. Their blocks are very difficult to reverse once started.
No one has an unlimited amount of willpower or disicpline, so using technology to conserve it for other things (like not eating junk food) helps.
Try to get him test Cold turkey and limit game time to reasonable level. It is not a free program, but 100% worth it (also configure it correctly).
Don't install it behind his back, and talk to him about how you feel. Also try to get him eat his medicine, like wtf that could solve some of his problems.
You should check ColdTurkey (https://getcoldturkey.com/) Blocking apps and set a schedule comes with the pro version (25$) If you are just looking for an app that allows you to write in a distraction free environnement you could use ColdTurkey Writer for free.
The Waste No Time plugin for Chrome might work, though I haven't used it myself. Leech Block for FireFox looks like a similar plugin.
Cold Turkey might also work, though scheduling appears to be part of the paid version of the software.
Lord Justice; Ladies, gentlemen and Apache Attack Helicopters of the Jury; reporters and divers others. I would like to present evidence that u/Fullmetalborn has brought this shocking case of abuse upon his self. There are numerous self-help services and assistance applications that he could use and seek help from to try and control his addiction, which he recognises is problematic and deeply damaging, and yet instead of trying to help himself he brings his case before this esteemed court. His motivation - I do not know, but I know a karma scam when I see one, and this smells of it to the rafters. If the Lord Justice still dispenses a guilty verdict, I would like to point u/Fullmetalborn towards this service, which I believe can help him and others in his position. [](/GNU Terry Pratchett)
One problem with WriteOrDie is that it's often ridiculously buggy. I actually paid for the full version and found it unusable. When I complained to the creator, he fixed the bugs I reported and sent out an update, but there are still irritating bugs that pop up here and there.
The "lite" version on the website only does two things: turns the screen red, and plays annoying noises when the screen has been red for a couple seconds. I find that's plenty of motivation for me--basically, as soon as the screen starts turning red, I start writing again. It's just a little "hey, keep typing" nudge. The full version has the whole shebang--spiders, soothing rewards, all that.
One alternative that locks your screen is Cold Turkey Writer. Some folks around here swear by it.
>I'm going to sign off reddit now and attempt write for the next 45 minutes then come back and check for any responses then.
Try using Cold Turkey! It's an amazing blocker application that's made for just this kind of occasion where you have distractions.
Although I never found a permanent solution before medication and before I even knew ADHD was a thing, I now look back and see that Cold Turkey was the most effective productive tool/technique I ever put into use. I still use it, even on meds, specifically to block Reddit.
Just to add to OP's message. If you're easily distracted by stuff on the internet, try Coldturkey!. This thing has the potential to make us extremely productive. It's a very simple app. Blocks all distractions for a certain amount of time with no option to revert the changes. But the best thing about is, it comes with a list time hogging/distracting sites prepopulated. There is an option to add/remove sites but just using the basic version can SURELY make anyone more productive. I'm not some guy paid to promote this product, just someone who used it and is just plain thankful.
Try Cold Turkey, this program is amazing. It's the best Windows program for blocking harmful websites/programs based on a schedule. So you can allow yourself to use Reddit for an hour right after you wake up, but block it the rest of the day, etc.
And the program will allow you to lock out the settings so you can't disable it or get around it, if you so choose. I highly recommend this option, it works wonders.
I replaced "phone" with "computer distractions" and gave you a big upvote. I will configure Cold Turkey tomorrow (it's the best website/application blocker for productivity on Windows, bar none) and start using it again.
Your comment gave me the impetus to give it a whirl again, because I think you're probably right about removing distractions from your work area. I'll see how it mixes with ADHD meds tomorrow.
Literally everyone is shitting on OP because his suggestion is really stupid.
It is clear that if you cant avoid opening non-work applicaitons when you need to do your work, what is stopping you from not opening the so-called "studying-only" account? Nothing.
Here's a better idea: https://getcoldturkey.com/
Wine.
(Wish I was kidding.)
(No, I don't.)
Actually, USUALLY for me if I feel like I can't write, it's because something isn't working in the story. So I find it helpful to read back through what I've written before -- it usually points me to what needs to happen next. (OR if I have a plot point in mind but couldn't get there, re-reading helps me figure out what I need to fix to make the plot point logical again.)
Sometimes if I'm just bored with where I am, I'll skip ahead and write a scene I'm looking forward to, and then come back later and jazz up the part that had me stumped.
I've also mentioned this here before, but Cold Turkey Writer has been a god-send in terms of getting rid of distractions and forcing me to put words on a page. It works better for me than regular pomodoros or any other kind of sprinting challenges I've done (although I do still enjoy sprinting against other people sometimes -- nothing like wanting to kick someone's ass to help you get words on a page! ;) )
I use Cold Turkey (https://getcoldturkey.com/). It's free although there is an option to upgrade and it blocks whatever websites you want on all browsers (so you can't just cheat by using Internet Explorer), plus you can't change the block settings once they've started so again, it's not possible to cheat.
I have this problem too. One thing that's helped me with it is promising myself that I would write at least 500 words by the time I fall asleep (I normally think about writing when i'm awake at night on my laptop). Also, there's this fantastic thing I use called Cold Turkey Writer, which literally blocks everything else untill you've written enough to pass the goal you set for yourself! You can set a time limit (I don't recommend, it's too easy for me to just procrastinate that too), or you can set a word count (much better for me, personally). It shouldn't be too much if you don't want it to be, and after you reach the goal you can save/quit whenever. Have fun writing!
It's a MAC app called Self Control: https://selfcontrolapp.com
Very simple and free. You can blacklist or whitelist sites (I suggest blacklist), with no easy way to reach them except waiting. I currently only BL reddit and facebook because they're the only time waster sites I visit regularly and I use the internet to research for my writing.
If you're on PC, maybe Cold Turkey: https://getcoldturkey.com/
If you find yourself procrastinating on the internet a lot, use the apps SelfControl (for osx) or Cold Turkey (for windows) to block out websites like reddit.
Also, getting sufficient sleep at regular hours will drastically cut down on distraction. Play white noise and buy a sleeping mask for $8. There's no point spending thousands of dollars on an education if you fall asleep in class and you can't keep yourself focused.
For PC and Mac there is cold turkey. There is a free version, but the features of the paid one is worth it. It isn't a subscription, but a one-time payment. This program is a beast. You finetune your blocking of apps and websites as much as you need to (also with allowences, schedules and so on). I bought it and never looked back.
In Switzerland it's 35 bucks, maybe you have a lower price where you live: https://getcoldturkey.com/pricing/
(No affiliate stuff here, I'm just happy with the app)
Couple of things:
Sometimes havingg a stack of old WIPs can be really, really burdensome. You feel a heavy obligation to those things that you just haven't finished and want to, but the effort it would take to re-engage and take it all on again is enough that it stops you from writing at all. Maybe try starting something new, something small? Even just a 100-word drabble might kickstart something for you.
I don't have kids, but there is literally ALWAYS something else I could/should be doing. When it comes to writing, I have to decide that for X amount of time, I'm not doing those other things even if I should. If you want writing time you have to take it. And you have to let yourself be okay with that. And sometimes you have to be okay with the fact that your writing time is going to be spent sitting there not knowing what to write, or only producing 2 sentences. Try anyway.
Also, I've found ColdTurkey to be helpful. Their free version is pretty robust.
Good luck!
Do you get urges from porn in general or is it a specific website you visit. If the latter, try installing a website blocker to prevent yourself from getting these thoughts. If on pc try cold turkey. May Allah SWT make it easy for you.
