But the lack of accountability is absolutely on the Obama admin, and let's not pretend for a second that he was ever going to actually be hard on them: from the start, his cabinet positions were vetted by Citigroup during a time when anyone who wanted to be on the side of the people should have been openly hostile to the big banks.
And before anyone says "but what they did was legal!" that is entirely untrue. Many of them were fined tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars, notably Wells Fargo, but that's a pittance to companies that pull in 20 times that in a year. But nobody ever went after the people who architected and caused the crisis, nobody went after the robber barons. It's detailed very well in this podcast from Current Affairs.

VPN my friend! If you don’t wanna pay for one (like me!) there are quite a few around that give you a small amount of data per month for free (eg TunnelBear). Just downloaded this ep onto my phone via VPN and I figure I’ll be able to cobble together enough data from free VPN sources to watch all 4 episodes of PSA!
Yes, from your IP address they can get a general geographic location of where you are. The best way to protect your privacy, if you don't want folks knowing this kind of stuff is to use a VPN. There are great services out there at really affordably prices, I use NordVPN, which ends up being only a couple bucks a month.

the only candidates I've heard actively talk about abolishing the filibuster are Elizabeth Warren, Beto, and Buttigieg. everyone else is promising sweeping policies while simultaneously defending the filibuster, which is pretty reckless.
idk what your goal is going around and trolling Beto is. I'm supporting whoever wins the nomination. yes, that includes Bernie, if it's Bernie.

synopsis: DeRay, De’Ara, and guest Myles E. Johnson cover the underreported news of the week—including Dave Chappelle, Noname’s Hood Library, Mount Everest, and John Singer Sargent. DeRay interviews Dr. Marcia Chatelain about the failed promise of Black capitalism explored in her book “Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America.”
Just noticed this thread here, I'll suggest my usual pick, Ian Black's "Enemies and Neighbors: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel 1917-2017"
Black reported on the region for decades for the Guardian, working from Israel's invasion of Lebanon through the Intifadas right up to the present. His book is a detailed overview of the conflict since the 1990s, and he's brutally honest especially whenever highlighting contradictions of talk and violence. He also makes copious use of various Israeli and Palestinian intellectual voices.
It's a depressing read, but worthwhile.
Ian Black, Guardian reporter whose done decades work reporting from Israel and Palestine, wrote a massive book called "Enemies and Neighbors: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel 1917-2017" back in 2017.
In my mind, easily the best book if you're looking for a story of the conflict. Black pretty much sums up the entire conflict since Zionism emerged in 1890s and Arab nationalism began in the 1900s. Black is brutally honest towards the inherent contradictions of belief expressed in the region, and the immense cruelty it has caused.
Not exactly a 'fun' read, but certainly one of the best sources, imho, on the conflict.
Thank you, u/Salamander014!
FWIW, I ended up going with Mullvad. I don’t even have to give them my name and email. I just get an account number like a Swiss bank account. The WireCutter / NYTimes rated it as the best VPN service for most people. (Source
Give me ExpressVPN over Athletic Greens any day of the week.
That said, this just shows how shallow the podcast advertising pool is. Everyone is doing the same dozen or so ad reads and I'm not sure if this is a bubble or just a resting state.
> Wait, you’re saying he pushed Obama to drop ACA outright, not just public option? First I’ve heard of this version of events- drop a source, please.
The Promise, by Jonathan Alter.
Pretty good read on the first year of Obama's presidency. In it, it's talked about how Rahm Emmanuel wanted Obama to drop the ACA because they just couldn't do too many things at once early on, political cost would be too high. Biden agreed with Rahm and pushed Obama to drop health care reform and only focus on the economy.

Obama ignored both of them and turns out he's a miraculous man who could walk and chew gum at the same time.
synopsis: Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) returns to give Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) the Never Trumper view on culture wars, judicial festishization, and the all-important business of impeachment. Plus: a wacky game about pathological lying! Please consider checking out Rick’s new book Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump–and Democrats from Themselves; a title that we will almost certainly be fighting him about next time he joins the show.
Synopsis: On this week’s pod, Ana (@anamariecox) sat down with Robin DiAngelo, author of the book White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism. To kick things off, Robin explained what white fragility is, and the impact that it has not just on white people, but white progressives in particular. Ana and Robin then talked about the need for people who recognize racism’s ills not to get complacent or arrogant, but rather be actively anti-racist, and continue educating themselves. They then switched gears, and explored why white women often fail to be allies for people of color before probing the ways de facto segregation and tokenizing minorities are so deeply problematic. Ana and Robin also put forth a series of suggestions for what well-meaning white people should do when they put their foot in their mouths and say something racist.
