I have been debating for a while to switch to Protonmail. Looks like Google made the decision much easier for me.
https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/transitioning-from-gmail-to-protonmail/
i honestly don't know if you can sign out for a single account when multiples are signed in.
Go to https://mail.google.com/ it will take you to the gmail page of whatever the default is( the first account you signed into gmail)
click the little round icon at the top right and at the bottom of that box click, "sign out of all accounts"
You WILL need to be able to sign back in with the right passwords for the other accounts that you are signed in on. The first account used will become the "default" that will open automatically when you navigate to gmail.
Update on this - I've found a program that seems to be everything google talk was for email and more. It's considerably less simplistic but the features seem to make up for it.
It's called Gmail Notifier Pro (although it isn't limited in any way to gmail so I'm not sure why it's specified in the title), and the free version seems like it will do everything google talk did. Ran a virus scan on it already, didn't pick anything up, and I have tried the program.
After a period of picking up all my past messages (I have a lot - it took a while), it gives you notifications, along with the ability to turn on or off sound notifications, how long it should display each email, and some other options I didn't really care about.
Please go through the following list of items to try and figure out what is happening to the messages. It may seem long, but it’s important to check and answer each question in detail. With luck one of these will either identify the problem so it can be fixed, or provide more clues to figure out the cause.
Do you use a Gmail (@gmail.com) or G-Suite (NOT @gmail.com but some other domain) account? If G-Suite, what's the domain name? Is the domain active (not expired) and are the MX records correct?
Are you using the web-interface at https://mail.google.com/ to access your account, or an e-mail client or mobile device? If not the web-interface, switch to it now before moving on to the rest of the list.
Have you looked in the “All Mail” label for the missing messages? What about “Trash” (or “Bin”, but not “[imap]/Trash” or anything else)? What about “Spam”?
Have you used the Search Mail function (with the term “in:anywhere”) at the top of the page to look for the missing messages?
Do you have Settings->Inbox->Inbox Type set to anything other than the "Default" view? Have you check the other tabs if you use the tabbed Inbox. Have you checked past the first page of messages, especially if you’re looking for older messages?
Did the senders get any sort of bounced/failed/rejected messages returned to them (post the full headers here)?
Is the account full? Looking below the inbox, how much space, out of how much total, does it say is being used?
Do you use a Gmail (@gmail.com) or Google Apps (NOT @gmail.com but some other domain) account? If Google Apps, what's the domain name? Is the domain active (not expired) and are the MX records correct?

Have you tried sending yourself a test-message from a non-Gmail account? Have you tried sending a test-message to that non-Gmail account and replying? Does either direction work?
Log into Gmail (https://mail.google.com/), click next to the Reply button, and select "Show original" from the drop-down menu. Then carefully check the headers to see what the actual delivery time was, and see what it corresponds to. Perhaps you can figure out where the two times came from.
Uninstalled stock app, downloaded September version from here, disabled update, transferred .apk file to phone via USB cable, installed it, quickly disabled WiFi as the app started updating right away, turned WiFi on again, checked inbox and it's finally working as it should.
Bah! I loathe the concept of evergreen software that makes developers push out half-baked products for the sake of prestige. That link shows Gmail is compatible with Android 4.1, meaning the bookmark star glitch should be fixed eventually.

What are you using to access your Gmail account: the web interface (https://mail.google.com/), an e-mail client (Apple Mail, Thunderbird), a mobile app (iOS, Android), something else?
I'm guessing the official Gmail mobile app?
I am using it. It's pretty straight forward but it does not support iOS yet. I recommend upload your public key to their site so people can send encrypt message to you.
Go to Settings->Filters, make one (or more) filter(s) for those specific senders, and use the "never send to spam" option. Use the web interface at https://mail.google.com/ to set that up.

I'm using the same method and the easiest ways to fix your problem is either...
1) Delete the shortcut and repeat the process.
or ...
2) Make sure that you sign into the accounts using the same order every time. I'm making sure that my work account always has this URL: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/. I achieve this by signing into it after signing into my personal account.
Since the Gmail URL does NOT contain the account name or password (for obvious reasons), no, it's not possible to have an Icon per account. You would just have an icon for Gmail https://mail.google.com/ and then log into whatever account you want to access.
I detailed this a bit more in another reply, but I found a program called Gmail Notifier Pro that can at least do the email notifications. I wasn't personally looking for a replacement for the chat function however I did come across a few likely looking answers while I was searching.
Here's one that should help you out.
Assuming that you have verified that it isn't in spam, that there are no filters and no forwards set up (not just taking the client's word for it, look yourself we all know how users/clients can be). Then the next steps I would take are:
1) SOMEONE has admin rights to the Google Apps Control panel for this domain. Maybe it is you? Have that person sign in to admin.google.com and then go to Reports and Under Audit on the left is Email Log Search. This will let you look for the email coming in to the mail servers. If it isn't here it didn't get to the domain
2) Go to https://mxtoolbox.com/ and see if they managed to get the domain on any blacklists while they were hacked/infected. If so, you'll want to get them removed from those. If the people emailing are using a service that checks these lists it COULD be just tossing the email. It is unusual that it does it on the outbound (Inbound to your client) but not impossible.
3) If all that proves clean/correct, ask them to email the client again and CC you at a totally different address to make sure it delivers.
Good luck!
If its a google account to a google account, this is encrypted so not a major worry, but if it goes out side there network, it will depend on the receiving email server i think.
I use https://www.virtru.com/ on a Google Workspace account and it works really well, im not sure if it works for normal Gmail accounts but you could try.
Read the following for more
Is Gmail fully encrypted?
Google's standard method of Gmail encryption is something called TLS, or Transport Layer Security. As long as the person with whom you're emailing is also using a mail service that also supports TLS — which most major mail providers do — all messages you send through Gmail will be encrypted in this manner.

Often times the slowness can be fixed by clearing the browser's cache and cookies, removing extensions, or other similar things.
Another possibility is the GMail Basic html version: https://mail.google.com/?ui=html
Open a browser on your computer and log directly into your Gmail account at https://mail.google.com/ using the web-interface. Can you send/receive e-mail using the web-interface OK?

Arg. I just got hit with the non-opt-out version.
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/h/ takes you to the plain html version, which is far superior to the 20-second-to-load bloated crap they've decided is the new gmail experience.
Start by signing out of whatever account you are in. Then go to https://mail.google.com/ and sign into the account you want to access. You can sign into both Gmail and G Suite accounts from that page, just use the full address (with domain name).
> Does anyone know where you can find filters or rules...?
In the Gmail web interface (https://mail.google.com/) they are in Settings->Filters. You'd be looking for filters using the "skip the inbox" option.

What is the exact message received when trying to log into that account at https://mail.google.com/ ?

It's not Google.com so it's NOT safe.
Try using this link: https://mail.google.com/
If that still goes to the wrong place, then you have some sort of malware or browser hijack you'll need to fix.
Google only provides two applications to access your e-mail account, the Gmail app or web-interface (https://mail.google.com/), and the Inbox app or web-interface (https://inbox.google.com/). They each have a unique use-model so the look and act VERY differently. Other than those, you would be looking at a third-party app or e-mail client to use with your account.
As for recommendations, I'd suggest you stick with either Gmail or Inbox, depending on which best fits the way you mange your e-mail.
No. You sign into G Suite accounts just like you would a GMail account at https://mail.google.com/ and you would use the same app to connect to all the accounts you own. It's just a separate account using your domain name (@domain.com) instead of @gmail.com.
You should be able to log into your Gmail account at https://mail.google.com/ and drag the message from Promotions to Primary. Be sure to answer yes to any question about future messages from that sender.
If that doesn't fix it, there's another trick we can use.
So if you've changed your password, added 2FA and have no app passwords or app permissions on file, then the issue is 100% your device that you're accessing your account from.
Check your browser as well for malicious browser extensions, don't use free VPN software (Other than ProtonVPN) or proxies.
I still firmly believe you should be wiping your device.

Got it! I think what you want to achieve can be done with Mailmeteor, but it will require a Premium account (to get access to the Developer mode feature - i.e. editing HTML). Mailmeteor costs $9.99/month. I prefer to let you know in case you were looking for a free solution.
Using Mailmeteor, here's how you could send emails with inline images:
<img src="{{ Images }}" />
This will insert the images in your email and Mailmeteor will replace {{ Images }}
by the URL of your image.I hope this helps. Again, using Mailmeteor to send personalized images is a premium feature (you need access to the HTML). So it's not free in case you were looking for a free tool.
Disclaimer: I'm one of the co-founder of Mailmeteor.
If that's your actual domain name, it's not valid. So that would be a problem.

I think most of your problems will be solved by signing into your Gmail account at https://mail.google.com/ , going to Settings->Labels, and UN-checking "Show in IMAP" for any labels you do not want to see in the app.
A couple things you say suggest you aren't using the web-interface to check. I'd suggest logging into your account at https://mail.google.com/ and then...

But if you can’t find the messages in one of those three labels (All Mail, Trash, or Spam) then they were deleted at some point in the past and can not be recovered.
Next time you see it happen, use a computer to sign into the actual accounts at https://mail.google.com/ and see if the messages appear in multiple accounts using the web interface.

I use firefox on a desktop pc and browse my emails at: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/2/#inbox
I have no service app or script accessing that email account at all. The above is the only way this account is accessed.
I was quoting the folders from memory. Point is I checked folders other than Inbox.
Also I don't know what gmail calls folders. I'm refering to the list under the Compose button, in the left-hand side panel/menu. The list is: Inbox, Starred, Snoozed, Sent, Drafts, etc.
Point is, I expect Inbox to show ALL emails that have arrived. You know, as per what an Inbox should do. I don't want any compaction or grouping into threads. These are the perfect way to miss something.
You'll need to use the Gmail web interface at https://mail.google.com/ You can then go to Settings->Filters and create a new filter. What you search on will sort of depend on if it's coming FROM the AOL account, or if you have to look for something else to identify it. On the second page of creating the filter, you'll use the Delete option.

Google doesn't delete content when an account gets full. You just can't add anything until you have available space again.
Since Gmail doesn't have scrolling (it uses pages) try checking in the Gmail web interface at https://mail.google.com/ for your history.
Yep, did most of that. Private Window works just fine. Cleared Cache and Cookies. Even did a Refresh of Firefox. Fixed it for a little bit but then it stopped working again. Sometimes it's just mail.google.com that stops working and other times it's all *.google.com sites. No idea what changed but I've never had this problem until yesterday.

My OS is Windows 8.1 and I use PIA (Private Internet Access) as my VPN. So once I was told to try and change my IP address to my home country, it would solve the issue.
However, as that didn't work, I decided to go to the PIA website for troubleshooting and they advised that if there were issues happening on certain websites, I was to change my DNS settings to their Built-In mode and then, that magically did the trick. Haven't had that problem occur since.
Google changed its attachment policy a while back making it more restrictive and sometimes causing past attachments to no longer download or be sent. The following options may allow access to these lost attachments.
Connect an e-mail client (like Outlook or Thunderbird) to your Gmail account (I'd suggest POP3) to download the messages. Once on your computer, you should be able to access them.
Use Google Takeout to create an archive of your Gmail account. But you'll have to find a way to access the resulting .MBOX file with your e-mail content.
Use a tool like the following that allows one to download attachments to your computer: http://download.cnet.com/Mail-Attachment-Downloader/3000-2369_4-10971605.html

Obviously, you better be 100% SURE that the file is safe before you bypass Gmail protection and download it.

You can still have the email work without having a website. You'll need to check your MX records. Go to https://mxtoolbox.com/ and see if your records are pointing to Google servers. Do you have access to the domain itself or is that also with the company that did your website?
Your domain is hosted at eNom. We've been seeing a rash of reports of problems for folks with domains registered there. They've broken something and DNS lookups are returning no data (your MX records are missing). You need to contact their support about getting your domain working again.

yes its enough, you will get instructions on the recovery email which is basically a link to login and fill a form. Sometimes you just need to login. But if you dont have gmail, your registered email is already your recovery email.

What are you using to view your messages? Is it one of the Gmail mobile apps (iOS or Android)? What if you use the web interface at https://mail.google.com/ do you still see them in the "wrong" account?
Same issues here till I found that disabling "Do not track" request under "Privacy, search, and services"/Privacy in Settings did work on my side. It worth trying...

Also, we're talking about NEWLY sent messages, right? Changing the name in settings wont' change messages already sent.
