I hand-expressed starting at 36 weeks using the haakaa collectors.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR HOSPITAL KNOWS YOU’RE BRINGING IT.
I’m 15 weeks PP and still so salty about them incorrectly storing all my hard work, dumping most of it (was able to save 15ml) and having to use formula anyway.
I made sure to ask my OB if I could bring it, she was all for it but apparently the nurses at my hospital had no clue what to do when I brought it on induction day. They told me they were going to store it in a freezer for donated breastmilk in the nursery which I had no problem with. Come time to use it when my daughter’s sugars were low and it took two of them to get out “it was stored wrong, never ended up in the fridge or freezer, we can use what we have right now but what ever is not used has to be tossed.”. I saw red, man. So much work down the literal drain.
Anyway, bring a cooler with you if you can if this is something you end up doing.
Being sick can affect your insulin resistance so that's probably what's going on, not the antacids. Mention it to your doctor when you're reporting your numbers. It's a known phenomenon - https://www.webmd.com/diabetes/guide/diabetes-colds
They might suggest insulin while you're sick or might tweak your diet plan. If it's only due to the illness and not because your resistance has increased as your pregnancy progresses (which is another possibility) you might not have to stay on insulin.
I got the Hakka colostrum collector kit from Amazon. I was able to express about 1.5 ml the first time and felt like I wasted space in the (relatively) expensive tube, so not a completely necessary purchase. Expressing into a medicine cup and drawing up into a cheap syringe would have done just fine but I do like the ease of using the Hakka set.
I found these bars at CVS (but also on amazon), and they are pretty tasty! The lemon flavor wasn't my fav, but the toasted coconut, maple pecan, and chocolate peanut butter are all really tasty. And they are super filling! If anyone is looking for a snacky thing, I highly recommend.
I cried on and off for days after my diagnosis. I felt much better and more in control when I started to test my blood sugar and had data points to understand my GD. And I found this book to be a helpful educational tool on GD (though it’s very poorly edited, be forewarned, lol): https://www.amazon.com/dp/0986295000/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_XPF447FH2GFAP6TFWNBH.
I find I am constantly hungry as well. I get about 30 carbs for breakfast, 45 for lunch and 45 for dinner.
My breakfast is usually a scramble of cheese, eggs, sausage and I get a frozen bag of potatoes with green and red onion mixed in. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don’t. I will eat a slice of toast with it or drink a cup of skim milk—never both.
Snacks are a bit different. I eat a lot of jello, fruits, some veggies, cheese, pickles. If you’re comfortable with deli meat, I spread cream cheese on deli meat and add in a pickle or picked okra and roll them up. Pretty good! I’ve also seen a recipe for protein balls I’ve yet to make—I can link it to you here.
For lunch I use a meal plan. I mix it up sometimes but it’s usually 1c mixed nuts, 1 cranberry-orange snacking round, 2 boiled eggs, a slice of brie cheese, two small slices of cheddar, 2oz of strawberries and 2oz of grapes. It’s a total of about 30 carbs. Sometimes I eat it for lunch or dinner or split it in half for snacks. Just depends. I make three of these at a time and leave them in the fridge.
Dinner I try to make it very protein based. I’m not a big meat eater but there are a lot of “keto” and “low carb” meals online that I use as my go-to. Meatloaf, Salisbury steaks, regular steaks, meatballs and protein pasta, yadda yadda. Just depends on how I’m feeling and if I want to cook.
I also look for freezer dinners that I can just pop in the microwave while I fix my families food if I’m not in the mood—throw some Mac n cheese on the stovetop, some dinosaur chicken nuggets in the air frier, and husband makes a sandwich.
I did this. They sell tiny oral syringes on amazon you can fill and freeze. I used none of it in the end but felt better having it. It was my 3rd, so I just manually expressed 2ml a day. Edit to add link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZZ4BZ15/ref=sspa_mw_detail_4?psc=1
Okay, one more thing: We use Lose It! for carb counting and it works great. We had actually used it in the past to count calories and though our dietician recommended several apps, none of them are as easy to use IMHO. Aside from being able to scan barcodes and share recipes, it's particularly handy because you can click the little "i" icon and see the total nutrients for the whole meal, including carbs.
I ordered this meter and strips from Amazon. Cheaper than my insurance copay.
True Metrix Blood Glucose Test Strips Box of 100 Count with Meter https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M4KC7CT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QBXXGS5HZ1606YJV95QJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have a mini stepper that I use a lot. It's more of a workout than walking so I use it 10-15 minutes at a time a couple of times a day. It gets my heart rate up and I can watch tv while using it. This is the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0016BQFSS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1IiGFb5RZC0VY.
With needing these pens with me all the time now, I made a little organizer!
Case is actually a pencil case from Amazon only $12 and comes in a bunch of colors!
I have alcohol wipes and mini bandaids (I only use these occasionally when one bleeds) in the zipper pocket, the pens stay put in the “pencil/pen holder” area, and the pen needles get thrown in the other section! I keep a ziplock for sharps so I can empty it into my sharps container when I get home. Zofran is in the very front pocket since I usually have to take that before meals too.
Overall this has made life with insulin so much easier and can’t recommend it enough! How do you store/travel with your insulin? Show me your setups!!
I bought this powder on Amazon
Zazzee Myo-Inositol Powder, 226... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JZNBP92?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’ve only been using it for 2 days but so far my fasting numbers have been under both days! I took 1 scoop (2g) in the afternoon and one in the evening before bed. So it’s looking promising! Will update after a few days.
It's absolutely worth making sure you have a high-quality meter. You can google to see how well your particular meter performs — the one my insurance sent me turned out to be a total piece of shit, I called and told them to give me a better one, they were like lol no, so I bought my own.
I ended up buying the Contour Next EZ, which costs $12.99 (not a typo) on Amazon and is generally the best-reviewed and most reliable glucometer available. (You can also buy starter kits that bundle together strips, lancets, etc. for more money — it's worth comparison-shopping to see what's most cost-effective!)
I order it off Amazon, this is the one I get. After a lot of reading, it seemed the most reputable.
Hi Mom I'm so sorry, I total get how scary it is. In case this canbe if any help: I'm looking for moms diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes to try out an app. I had GD my first pregnancy, and it was SO hard, If I can help moms ... that's my mission. It's free, low commitment & is helpful for anyone going through it. These are the links to download Iphone: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/malama/id1626320933 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.malamareactnative
After a lot of reading I opted for this one-
It has changed my numbers fairly significantly. I take 2 with lunch and 2 with my bedtime snack. I would definitely talk to your doc about it, but there are multiple studies (from credible sources) showing that it’s perfectly safe for pregnancy. Many women with PCOS take it to help them conceive as well. My NP didn’t recommend it just because I wasn’t already taking it prior to pregnancy, but my MFM doc was fine with it.
I have the Contour Next One and like it. I was prescribed a different meter, strips and lancets but with insurance, it was more expensive than just buying my own meter (in United States). I also like that the strips for the Countour are sold at most drug stores so they are easy to repurchase. Walmart sells them, and Walgreens as well. Here is an Amazon link - https://www.amazon.com/Contour-Smart-Meter-Monitoring-System/dp/B06W53ZLTK
This protein powder is a good way to get veggie servings in and it doesn't taste like vegetables and is GD friendly. You can mix it with berries, almond milk or another liquid. I haven't tried this flavor but personally I like the coconut almond one I think it is. https://www.amazon.com/Vega-Protein-Greens-Vanilla-Servings/dp/B00MYRXIIS/ref=sr\_1\_17?crid=34ZQWG18BSZKA&keywords=vegan+protein+powder+sport+almond&qid=1660059506&rdc=1&s=hpc&sprefix=vegan+protein+powder+sport+almond%2Chpc%2C...
Also this book was tremendously helpful. Read it in a few days once I got over my moping phase. https://www.amazon.com/Real-Food-Gestational-Diabetes-Conventional/dp/0986295000
And I packed a bunch of “no” foods for the hospital bag. They didn’t check my finger stick once becaUs mine had been diet controlled and they said it’s done once placenta is out. So I had vitamin water, chocolate caramels, chocolate covered power berries from TJ’s, etc. was such a treat.
For me personally, P5P (activated vitamin B) and a more accurate glucometer did the trick when low carb by itself wasn’t working
I actually buy this protein powder and mix with ripple unsweetened original milk.
Levels Grass Fed 100% Whey Protein, No Hormones, Double Chocolate, 5LB https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0921LLQ29/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_01MNRPQCENHSARYT2WJV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Basically no carb and lots of protein, plus it’s more of a subtle flavor. Can easily mix it up with a shaker cup, but I’ll also blend it with a banana for a midday snack etc.
You can also buy a smaller size depending on how far along you are and expect to use.
They are hard to find in stores so I’ve bought them on Amazon! Fairlife Core Power High Protein Milk Shake, Chocolate, 14 FL Oz Pack of 12 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LD2NV9X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WNP9T6SNR2GSDKAH6MRA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Amazon Fresh 😁 The texture takes a little getting used to, but I usually eat or with No Sugar Added Preggo sauce.
morning fasting is the hardest to control, and generally they want it to be under 95.
things you can do to make sure your #s are accurate, and try to help control them before your next appointment:
1) make sure your hands are clean before you test 2) drink a lot more water 3) try to complete a meal from start to finish within 30 minutes. test two hours after the start of the meal. 4) if you can, try movement after your meals, like going for a 15-20 minute walk. 5) have a small snack before bed-- protein paired with a small amount of carbs. the overnight spike is frequently because your body dumps glucose to avoid a sugar low. folks that have a CGM can see a dip followed by a big spike that only comes down very slowly. 6) look at reviews for your glucose monitor-- if there are lots of complaints about accuracy, try a different one. i've had good luck with this one: The CONTOUR NEXT ONE Blood Glucose Monitoring System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06W53ZLTK/
record the numbers, but try not to stress. understand that your placenta and hormones are being jerks and it is frequently not controllable by diet alone.
I got a case on Amazon that says "The Ouch Pouch".
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09G5KZ8Q3/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_D2SP14TMADN6DWA2FW10
I was close to getting the one that said "All My Diabetes Sh*t". 😅

If you would like to spare your fingers and try palm instead - this one from Amazon is another option. Genteel Plus Lancing Device
Thank you! 🥲🥲🥲 this community is the BEST
Yes! I read many reviews and got this one. It’s coming today!!

Besides all great advise here, the first thing I noticed is that the diet guidelines the hospital gave me (no sugar, low fat) wasn’t really helping me with my numbers - I felt I would eat more carbs following that. So I checked the website Gestational Diabetes UK and got the book Lily Nichols and was great. When I finally talked with the dietitian she was telling me all that is in the book. But this is personal, for me just made more sense than the low fat thing.
I got this one: Blood Glucose Monitor Kit - Diabetes Testing Kit with 1 Glucometer, 100 Blood Sugar Test Strips, 1 Lancing Device, 100 Lancets, Travel Case for Blood Glucose Meter and Diabetic Supplies https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076VSN7TR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JVD0A0P74MV9A4YXZ2X1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and it was 20-40 points off from the lab and the monitor the doctor gave me.
Sure - I have "Tumaro's Wraps, Multi-Grain" that I found at Giant Eagle, and "L'oven Fresh Protein Bread" from Aldi. I've settled on this whey protein powder from Amazon that's not overly sweet after trying out so many. Yeah, vegetarian protein options are tricky - definitely recommend tofu, soy, tempeh, and seitan. I can imagine stores like Safeway with so many options, it gets overwhelming. But it's also good they'll have vegan options for protein and keto options for low carb. Keep trying and tasting things! I got diagnosed pretty early as well. I think tackling GD has made me more aware of my food habits so that's a silver lining. All the best!
I snacked on hard boiled eggs, string cheese, plain cheerios, certain vegetables. I ordered myself this book and found it very helpful with meal planning and how to configure a balanced menu that was filling and nutritious. Some of it was just plain experimentation though. I know this might spike a little, so I’ll eat it with a protein kind of thing. It stinks, I won’t lie, but I got some good eating habits from this.
There are these “Atkins diet” peanut butter cups that are 12g of total carbs and they’re not bad for a sweet snack. I got this kind but there are a couple different brands out there.
Thanks so much for your reply. Do you think this one is ok?

This brand also has frozen waffles. I don’t eat it often but good for those strong cravings.
Omg I’m so sorry it makes me sad too lol. But soon! I definitely loaded up on goodies before being diagnosed, I had a feeling I would come positive since I would get tired after heavy carb meals. My energy levels definitely improved after being diagnosed and my swelling went down. This is temporary! You can do this! But if it helps look for Keto friendly pastries I made a cake with this Birch Benders Keto Classic Yellow Cake Mix, 10.9oz and Keto Vanilla Frosting, 10oz, Bundle (1 baking mix and 1 frosting) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TV3CZ5P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BKEFN5NHNH31JXF1S9YG for my bday it was chocolate and added strawberries, that same brand also sells waffles. It’s not the same but it’s something.
I haven't really ever experienced too much bruising, except for the two times that I used a different lancet device and squeezed a lot in order to get enough blood for one of those covid antibody testing cards. I think it could've been that the lancet was rougher (was one of those single-use kinds, and probably had a thicker needle because the point was to get lots of blood), but also I was squeezing a lot. Do you need to "milk" your finger to get enough blood? If so, that might be causing the bruising, and doing other things like running your hands under hot water, shaking them, using a deeper lancet setting, etc. might help so you don't have to squeeze hard. I don't "milk" but rather do one or two up-and-down squeezes if that makes sense (like with one finger on the fingernail/the other on the pad of the finger I poked the side of). If you aren't milking your finger but it's still bruising, can you go down in the lancet setting? Or even buy a new lancet? Mine broke partway through pregnancy so I bought a new lancing device, and I found it to be easier. It was the Care Touch.
ETA: I also have a rotation, so like on Monday fasting I do the outer side of my left pinky, Monday breakfast inner side of left pinky, Monday lunch outer right pinky, Monday dinner inner right pinky. Tuesday is ring finger, Wednesday middle, Thursday index, and Friday-Sunday go back to pinky-middle. This way each finger/side gets at least 3 days in between pokes and I'm never trying to remember which finger I haven't done in a while.
Check on amazon. I got a different brand's lancing device and it's like 4 cents per lance.
I see. That sounds difficult. I think there have been lots of different posts here where people weigh in on their strategies in the comments if anything might help, but I like to rub the area vigorously with a paper towel after washing, then I poke before getting the strip all ready and squeeze gently one time to make sure that there's any blood (occasionally something jams and it doesn't actually puncture... so as soon as I see red here I stop squeezing). Then I get the strip set up and go back and squeeze a few more times until I get a big enough drop. My squeezes are just like pinch pinch, not "milking" or stroking. I've heard these kinds of things can actually make your numbers worse.
It shouldn't be so hard. Have you mentioned to your nurses? There are other glucometers that allow taking blood from other sites, which might open up more possibilities. Also, glucometers vary in how much blood they require, so maybe a different one would make it easier. TBH, I would probably set myself a limit and if I had to do more than 5 attempts, I just would give up for that reading. But definitely tell your nurse.
Oh, also I bought a different lancing device than came with my glucometer and found it slightly more comfortable. Maybe you could explore that too? I got this one on Amazon for $8.
Could you warm up some water in the microwave and dip your finger in for a min beforehand too maybe?
I always have dry hands in the winter and with the pandemic and GD it's gotten out of control. The only thing that helps me now is O'Keeffe's Working Hands. I put it on before bed and it usually stings a little but it keeps my hands from literally bleeding from being so dry. I use reguar, lighter non-scented hand cream throughout the day too, CVS brand.
https://www.amazon.com/OKeeffes-Working-Hands-Cream-ounce/dp/B00121UVU0
Have you heard of the Carbanada brand pasta? I got it on Amazon. You can have a cup and a half and I’ll pair with a ball of burrata or turkey meatballs. You could also make some sort of Mac and Cheese with it, we have quality cheese powder (not like chemical stuff, we get it from King Arthur) that I’ve wanted to try it with and pretend it’s Annie’s Mac and Cheese 🤔
Al Dente Carba-Nada Egg... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FZRYPO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I use Gold Standard Chocolate flavor and it comes in a big ass bag at Costco for $40. It lasts me like 5-6 months 😂 leaves me with perfect numbers!
I've been using it for a month now and it is sooo worth it. The needle is super intimating to me, so I have my partner talk to me to distract me while I apply. The needle, so far, has only hurt once, but the pain honestly is no worse than doing a bad finger prick! Also, the needle does not stay in your arm, it is replaced with a catheter port so there is no pain walking around with it or moving you arm! Like mentioned below, on my left arm I hit it in doorframes and the car door and on clothes all the time. I got these patches that stay on really well! I get a weeks worth of use out of one, and it's super easy to replace over the sensor!
You got this! If someone else can do it for you, let them! Tensing when it's about to be injected can make it hurt, so try your best to relax your arm!
I eat mostly gluten free at home simply because my husband has a gluten intolerance and we don't keep much gluten in the house. You didn't ask for tips about food, so feel free to ignore this. But I've found some bean based pastas that are gf and much lower carb/higher protein and fiber than regular (gf or otherwise) pastas.
Here is one of the brands I like on Amazon. Not a good price; just wanted to provide an example. I buy it at Costco and a local grocery. https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Edamame-Spaghetti-lbs-907g/dp/B00TCUM7X2
If I use it in a dish with plenty of fat and protein (e.g, pasta with pesto and chicken or pasta carbonara with shrimp), my numbers do great. Hope this is of some use to you! Good luck :)
I’m a big fan of [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJ7DCQ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_phaMDb382RKYZ protein power. I only use one scoop and it’s 8g carbs per scoop. Tastes decent and has a ton of good reviews on Amazon!
To answer your #3 point, I have had pretty good success with home made indian stuff with lentils and chickpeas and half a cup of brown rice or multigrain roti (beware of restaurants, I think they add some flavoring with sugars in it and my readings were on the high end of the spectrum although still within range).
For cook book, someone on this sub recommended this to me and I ordered it right away: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1641524944/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This book also has decent vegetarian options.
Good luck!!
I've been eating this when I'm dying for some jam, it's honestly not bad and doesn't spike me whatsoever if I stick with one or two tbsp. I might need to make these biscuits to go with it!
Also I have no experience with generic strips but you can get a cheap glucose meter like : arkray expression and the strips are less than $10 for 50 this is what I had to do while I waited for my Medicaid issues to iron out.
First of all, take this distanced hug. I just failed three hour test on Saturday and felt so overwhelmed as well. Then I got myself down the internet / mom shaming rabbit hole. Every time I tried to get informed about GSD, up popped some terrifying headline. The warnings were dire but the actual info is so inconsistent. As you’ll see if you haven’t already GSD is mostly about genetics and your placenta.
I went on Amazon and picked up the Lily Nichols book, which has a lot about the rules of thumb for planning a GSD diet (low carb, high fat, high protein). I read it in one sitting, went to Trader Joes with a grocery list, and honestly that really helped. My doctor hasn’t even contacted me about next steps, but it sucks to wait around feeling uncertain. I’d recommend picking up her book or any other book over internet research for this particular momma struggle. Here’s the link- https://www.amazon.com/Real-Food-Gestational-Diabetes-Conventional/dp/0986295000/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=gestational+diabetes&qid=1601940096&sprefix=gestational+dia&sr=8-3
Happy Birthday!
I was able to have BBQ ribs and green beans as a "cheat meal" and levels have been under 110 1 hour after, meal felt super indulgent!!! Also I found these keto blondies on amazon that actually aren't dry or weird tasting, pretty satisfactory.
Also try keto ice cream! My faves are enlightened and rebel!
Enjoy!!!!
Have you heard of the Kodiak brand? They make high protein waffle and pancake mixes among other products. I made the blueberry muffin mix and it was great! The serving size is 2 muffins but I just have one at a time with some butter and it doesn’t spike my levels.
Kodiak Cakes - Protein-Packed Muffin Mix Blueberry - 14 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H1MX8WM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RuxYEbPB1RZ4J
I would not buy off of amazon because the price is ridiculous but I’ve found them at grocers.
Can I ask where you can buy that yogurt, if you're in USA?
As for the coffee, I found a really tasty one from Amazon. Hawaiian decaf. Costly but for me it was worth it (I used to drink 2 cups of coffee a day). Royal Kona 100% Kona Coffee, Decaf, Medium Roast, Ground, 7 Ounce
Mine does too. I've decided to ignore them. There is nothing in bread pasta or rice that my baby needs IMHO. I do get carbs from veggies and full fat dairy and he's currently kicking the bejezus out of me so ... whatever. But I did some of my own research on this - and I found this book helpful - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S33XOH2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
She talks about the carb requirement and why it's bunk - I also listened to her podcast.
I also liked this article - https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/gestational-diabetes-pregnancy
But I did a lot of poking around and I gave myself permission to do what felt healthy. If GD is really another way of saying carbohydrate intolerance - then - I cut out carbohydrates. I'd say I'm eating closer to 50 a day but moreso later in the day. I can handle way more with dinner lunch than at breakfast.
Cheese and these Mary’s crackers have been a godsend this week. Also the Skinny Pop popcorn is only 14 grams of carbs for 3.5 cups of popcorn and they have all sorts of flavors. Not exactly healthy but soooo nice to not be like “I’m craving something crunchy, guess I’ll have like two tortilla chips or a half of a bland ass rice cake”
So I buy the Nature Valley Protein bars in bulk at Costco 14 carbs, 10 protein. I also buy a big bag of individually packaged cheese sticks (so I don't have to worry about the cheese going bad before I eat it all and so I can toss it in my purse and go). I also recommend having a boiled eggs on hand, best to peel them before you leave the house. Plus you could do individual servings of peanut butter, either in a small tupperware container (I have some like this or if I'm going to be out for a while and don't want something that "big" I use these I use for snacks and such) I know the Justin's ones are 7 carbs and 8 protein, you could pack that with a small apple (or half a large apple)
I'm kind of doing a hybrid of paleo and keto. I like the idea of all the natural food in paleo, but a lot of the recipes call for bananas, honey, maple syrup, sweet potatoes, or other foods with high glycemic index. I think it is a great place to start, though. I'm still finding a lot of recipes I can eat in my paleo cookbooks. This book for GD was the most helpful thing ever, though.
