>I have a question about this study... do you know where to find the original study? I know you reference The Herpes Handbook, but do you know the exact citation?
No, I don't know the exact citation, but I know that Terri Warren, who wrote The Herpes Handbook, was also one of the authors of the study/studies that determined transmission rates. So it is very likely in her list of academic publications, which can be found here:
https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Terri_Warren/publications
I haven't bothered to look up the study itself because I know Terri was one of the people who conducted it, and therefore I accept her statements in The Handbook. Plus she has repeated the same statistics many times on her own clinic forum.
>Also do you by any chance how many times per week the couples reported per week how often they had sex?
Yes: the couples had sex approximately twice per week.
>Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. It really means a lot.
You're very welcome.
>There just is not a lot of data on Genital HSV 1 transmission rates, huh? Like the stuff you quoted form The Herpes Handbook most of the stuff I find on genital herpes is for the HSV 2.
Yes. The reason is that there haven't been any actual empirical studies conducted on genital hsv1 transmission rates like there have been for genital hsv2.
>I will look into Terri Warren more. Talking with or at least being able to ask a expert sound exactly like what I need.
I'm so sorry -- I completely forgot to provide a link to her clinic forum! You can access it here:
https://www.westoverheights.com/forum/
And yes, Terri Warren is widely respected as a herpes expert and has made herpes one of her primary focuses in her approximately 30 years of clinical practice. In addition, she is also a researcher, her clinic has participated in numerous herpes studies, and she often collaborates with some of the top herpes researchers in the US (eg Dr. Anna Wald). For a listing of some of the scientific studies and academic articles that Terri has contributed to or co-authored, you can visit:
https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Terri_Warren/publications
Her 2007 journal article in The Lancet alone ("Genital Herpes", Lancet, 370 (9605) (2007), pp. 2127-2137), which she co-authored with Drs. Rachna Gupta and Anna Wald, has been cited 258 times by other scholars and researchers.
Best wishes
Thanks, yeah it’s been pretty tough. I tried valtrex but I reacted terribly to it and it made me extremely tired. So I switched to valocyclovir but it didn’t seem to help. Been taking lysine (like 5000mg a day), vitamin c, I workout and eat healthy and take other multivitamins as well as immune support. Idk if it was just a coincidence but since taking the immune support is when it started to slow. Here’s a link
Also treated symptoms with terragen cream (doesn’t work for me), fermi-clear (probably best option so far, seems to cool it tho not sure about lessening the duration), which I’ll combine with numbing cream (also very effective). Also have it orally and I use Cepacol numbing lozenges.
Male. 29. Also my ob started a few days after my first shot, and from what I’ve read for other people that also seems to be the norm. So if you got it awhile ago hopefully you’re in the clear.
Learn what Love truly is. Love yourself deeply and fully. Both of you need to do this.
Learn to really communicate. Really listen to each other, not just start thinking of how to respond right away. Listening takes time and concentration AND an open heart. Hear what the other says and reflect it back to show them you heard, even if you didn't completely understand. When they stop or pause, ask "Can you tell me more?" When you respond, do so from your heart more than your head. Be honest and vulnerable, not confrontational or argumentative. This is a time to hear and be heard, not start a debate or blame.
Once that is in place, your relationship will take its proper course. Whatever direction it takes, you will know you tried your best. Love yourself. He will love you for that!
And don't let a virus determine who you are or who you love. That is continuing the stigma.

That'll be $150, please. Kidding! 🤣🤗

Prevention
Avoid too much sun. Yes, the sun can be a trigger. Try to wear hats if you know you will be in the sun for extended periods of time, or chapstick containing SPF to help keep the pesky cold sores away.
Dry Lips are also more susceptible to cold sores so hydrate, and have that chapstick ready to keep the moisture in. Vaseline also works for this.
Try to pinpoint your triggers stress is a major trigger for hsv in general try to relax, take deep breaths, meditate and avoid stressors.
Supplements such as lysine can help boost that immune system and prevent all hsv outbreaks. Lysine chapstick can help prevent cold sores from forming. There are a bunch of different brands to choose from. https://www.amazon.com/Herpecin-Balm-Stick-Lysine-Ounce/dp/B000052YE1/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?keywords=lysine+chapstick&qid=1669292290&rdc=1&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1
Treatment
When you first feel that tingle go to your local drugstore and grab an Abreva (no I'm not sponsored). This only works during the tingle stage if you try to put on Abreva on an open sore it may sting. There are off brands of Abreva but for me the name brand works the best. It shortens the length and severity of the outbreak. You can usually get 2-3 outbreaks per tube.
Ice will help with the swelling and the irritation. If you are having a bad cold sore, grab that ice and feel the cooling relief.
There is some evidence that rubbing coconut oil on a cold sore will aid in healing and prevent scarring.
Manuka Honey: as listed above Manuka aids in healing it is safe to use on a sore and is said to speed up healing.
This is the closest I can find at Amazon Canada:
From what I’ve read, the virus isn’t viable when exposed to air. I don’t think you need to be concerned about toilet seats or laundry.

There is a medication called Gabapentin that helps with the nerve pain. It's made for shingles, but shingles is also a herpes virus.
You can use over the counter Lidocaine cream on your sores and clit. I've had good luck so far with this from amazon. You can probably find cheaper stuff, but get the cream version of lidocaine not the ointment, so you don't have to press it in.
I know the pain you're going through dear. This subreddit is full of people who have been where you are now. I am on day 6 of my first gHSV-1 outbreak. I've got a sore on my taint the size of a nickel 💀
I promise this is not the rest of your life. The pain will subside and the sores will go away and life will start to return to normal. This will pass. Sending you good vibes and love ❤️
Definitely talk to your doc about changing your antiviral dose. Some people take 2 grams a day.
I have been using over that counter 5% lidocaine cream on my sores. It has helped SO much with the pain and itching. I specifically got stuff for tattoos, but any cream based lidocaine will work. Cream is better than ointment because it's much softer and spreads over the lesions without needing to press on them. Here is the stuff I got from amazon. I've been applying it every 20-30 minutes.
It will go away with the right medication and time their is always hope never give up I believe in you and struggle is never forever their is always light at the tunnel this Call Doctor Amazon has amazing reviews. Don't put any over-the-counter remedies on it, first. The best thing you can do with what you hopefully have at home is to take an extra-strength acetaminophen or ibuprofen and try to get enough sleep at night.
I agree lysine is probably the only thing you can do in the next couple days - it's easy to find at pharmacies and even grocery stores in the US, at least.
To order for later, consider keeping some red marine algae on hand - I started using that + 15 mg zinc picolinate twice a day (one dose before bed, one in the morning) after valtrex stopped working for me (also gHSV-1). Here's [one listing on Canadian Amazon](https://www.amazon.ca/Red-Marine-Algae-500-Dumontacea/dp/B00H59IW3Q/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=14OAQ0IB1V1GM&keywords=pure+planet+red+marine+algae&qid=1649296819&sprefix=pure+planet+red+marine+algae%2Caps%2C78&sr=8-1) with the right kinds of seaweed.
I never believed in herbal supplements prior to this, but it's actually really helpful with minimizing the pain from OBs you already have and with preventing *most* new ones. Here's [a post containing a study](https://www.reddit.com/r/HerpesCureResearch/comments/sq5bwv/sulfated\_polysaccharides\_from\_seaweed\_strandings/) about the why.
[I had herpetic whitlow (hsv1) as well on index finger of my right hand. I got ghsv1 a month after my SA. I was in pain and I felt around down there to feel what was wrong and that’s how I got it on my finger. Problem is that I had broken skin from a hangnail so I think that’s how the virus got in. The initial whitlow showed up 2 weeks later after my ghsv1. The pain and swelling from whitlow lasted for 5 months straight. Acyclovir helped very little but one day it just cleared up and it’s been gone ever since. I’ve been clear from it 8 months now. I was so scared once because I began to feel pain around my face once and couldn’t stop crying thinking I spread it to my face and eyes turns out to be just dry skin. I ordered cloth finger gloves from Amazon to put over it at night so it could “breathe” and dry out. And wore a bandage over it during the day at work.
+1 for a trimmer! I remove the guard and am able to take it pretty far down (but not so far as to irritate!) bikini trimmer on Amazon
Hi! First I just wanna say I'm so sorry. I know how stressful OCD is in general. Please know there are a lot of things in the works right now for a cure/vaccine. We will definitely see something in our lifetime.
In the meantime, take care of your body, because a constant outbreak most likely means you are very run down and stressed, taking a toll on your immune system. Up your protein and maybe invest in a good amino acid/protein powder, because glutamine has been shown to suppress the virus as well due to it being necessary for producing certain macrophages for the immune system, and when we have a chronic infection, glutamine uptake increases.
I found a really great product on amazon, it seems to stop outbreaks in their tracks in my personal experience (lesions/start of lesions) along with tea tree oil.
Anyways, I hope I helped a little, you are not alone, and there are many people like myself obsessed with research and finding things that work. xoxo

I find the capsules are easier to do than the pills, since they’re all pretty large. I like to get the 500mg capsules and either take 1 or 2 depending on how I’m feeling. I like these best from Amazon.lysine
I was about your age when I knew that I had HSV2 as well. I remember very well how terrible the outbreak was and how ugly I felt. YOUR LIFE IS NOT OVER. THINGS WILL GET MUCH BETTER.
You don't have to tell your parents. HSV2 does not require medication or therapy. I took one bottle of antivirals, didn't like the way they made me feel, and never took another one.
I've had this disease for nearly 10 years now and the impact it's had on my life has been incredibly small. The first year is the worst but your body will build up antibodies and the severity and frequency of outbreaks will slow down.
I get an outbreak every month or so and they are barely noticeable. My first genital herpes outbreak made my penis swell and look like a soapy sponge being squeezed. https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/sponge-foam-on-table-332352308?src=DJ7dbtm22bREl9EalKCUdg-1-4 (pardon my herpes humor) but those days are long gone.
It gets better, there are tons of us with it, you don't have to tell your parents or anyone else for that matter. (except potential future sexual partners, we aren't monsters right?)
> HSV is almost never tested for without evidence of symptoms, regardless of type.
This is incorrect. People can have and spread HSV while being asymptomatic. Furthermore, I recently requested an STD screening. They asked me what I wanted tested: separate tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HSV1, HSV2, HIV, and a few others I cannot recall; and a slew of combinations of many of them.
There are separate blood tests to differentiate between the two strains.

You have to remember that stress isn’t going to help the outbreak. I know that feeling though. During an outbreak, all the acceptance and positivity you’ve had about it just goes down the drain and all the bad stuff comes up.
You should seriously try meditation if you haven’t yet. It helps me feel balanced and in more control of my mind. It’s so much simpler than I ever thought and I love using the techniques simply to calm down throughout the day when needed. I used an app called Headspace https://www.headspace.com/invite/esvob to learn as it is free for x amount of time and it really breaks things down in a simple, easy way to learn and I love the style/voice. I now use Simple Habit https://simplehabit.app.link/l6q4XbHdc0 because it has more expansive guided meditations but I have to search a lot more for narrators I like. The links should hook you up with a referral deal so you can explore it without committing to paying anything and see if you like it. I’d for sure start with Headspace though. I hope it helps ♥️

so Valtrex, at least for me, is cheap with my insurance (I'm on Cigna). I don't believe I have a co-pay for it. I would talk to your doctor about options; from my general experience, going with the generic form of a drug as opposed to the brand name is cheaper.
As for the L-Lysine, I get that on Amazon. Here's a link to what I use on Amazon. It's a little pricey, and I'm sure you can get a smaller batch for cheaper, but this is just what I went with.
Yeah folliculitis. So with that said I'm happy to recommend a very good, very inexpensive electric razor. It gets close without compromising your skin.

Fill it with water and keep it next to the toilet. When you start to pee, start squirting water at your genitals to dilute the urine. It's not a miracle cure, but it helps a lot.
Lidocain cream is a good topical cream for painful blisters. You can get it at all the drug stores (CVS, Walgreens).
The 1st outbreak is generally the worst. The anti-virals are trying hard, and will work much better with future outbreaks. Have you tried taking something like Aleve for the lymph nodes?
I take lionsmane extract from time to time, although it may not explain why I haven't had an outbreak of OHSV1 for like 3 years.(knock on wood).
I have had an extreme amount of stress the past few years, no idea why I haven't had an outbreak. I eat healthy. Not sure. Just my two cents. (amazon link) Helps with my REM sleep too.
what I meant by she thought she had it internally is she said that when the outbreak first happened that she felt like it was trying to push out of her vagina. I really don't know.. but she had 3 - 4 bumps in the genital area, 1 more near her butt and the first few days her chest was broke out with a rash. That is why I thought it was an allergy to this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MXNYM38/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it's a delay cream that has 7.5% Benzocaine which some people are allergic too. But, it's been 3 wks since the outbreak first happened.. 2 wks in is when she went to the dr they looked and said they wasn't sure what it was, and took the urine test.. a few days later they called her on the phone and told her she had genatil hsv1 She only has 2 days left of the medication.. if she still has the bumps after that I will have her go get them swabbed, or take a blood test. Thank you very much for your information and your help. I wasn't trying to challenge you on the urine test thing, was just confused because that is what the Dr's said and also google mentioned this ....... Tests for HSV are most often done only for sores in the genital area. The test may also be done using other types of samples, such as spinal fluid, blood, urine, or tears. To see whether sores are caused by HSV, different types of tests may be done. Herpes viral culture.

It’s going to be OK. The first year after I was diagnosed was hell. Back to back outbreaks for months, and then a less serious outbreak every two months. I was diagnosed 09/18, though, and only get the occasional spot now. I also used to get full body aches, scratchy throat, and swollen lymph nodes as well. I don’t get that anymore.
I struggled with the inability to orgasm and dryness from September ‘18 - August ‘19. The inability to orgasm lasted a couple of months, but it was extremely difficult to orgasm until maybe August when thinks felt more normal again.
I would try a vulva cream/balm designed to moisturize your lady parts. Use daily. I attached the link of one that helped me. I also used Replens (there are similar brands as well) every 3 days to moisturize, and used a sensitive formula lube every single time I had sex. A steroid cream helped me finally turn the corner.
Another option might be to use an estrogen cream for a little bit, if there is thinning of the vulva skin. Use an unscented sensitive skin feminine wash.
It helped that I saw the same guy continuously throughout this entire period of time, and he was super sweet and patient. He didn’t take it personally. We used more lube. I even used a couple drops of coconut oil before he went down on me. Sometimes it took me a while to get where I need to go, but we managed.
It will get better. Make sure that you communicate what you were going through with your doctor, so that you can try a prescription if things don’t get better soon.

Right time to go to the doctor. They should suggest a good ointmentntaht soothes and heals faster.
This from Amazon helped me on my penis Basic Organics L-Lysine Lip Ointment, 0.875 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GG0WOC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MqWgBb3ZFYEAT
So far I’ve only tried two different brands and this is the one I have preferred. Pricey but soo worth it. I also dilute peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and spray the area and it gives a nice “cooling” affect. I love and will try anything natural.

They only gave you one or two pair of lacy ones but I enjoy it because then if I wanted to be extra sexy I had two new pair but the rest are either cotton or that really silky material maybe polyester idk but they didn’t irritate me.
I have super sensitive skin and this works AMAZING!!
Hi yes you can get a 3 month supply for 60$ on hellowisp.com and you can also take l-lysine from Amazon. Hope this helps and happy healing
You can take l-lysine from amazon and you can get affordable antivirals from hellowisp.com this helps with outbreaks and keeping it under control.
Not true, I’ve read many and myself included who’s prodromes were active and constant well after the outbreak. My prodrome was constant for 3 months until I received the antivirals and started taking vitamins to combat herpes. If I was you I’d start on antivirals and 1000mg of l-lysine. It wouldn’t hurt just until you can get retested. You can get antivirals(acyclovir/vacyclovir) from hellowisp.com and the l-lysine from amazon. Hope this helps a bit until you find out what’s going on.
So I have HSV1 and ordered this L/lysine ointment from amazon and it is a god send. The one primary outbreak I had input it on there and I swear I think that sped up the healing more than the Valtrex. Also super good for dry skin :)
I highly recommend
Specifically Manuka honey is what I used topically.
Kiva Raw Manuka Honey, Certified UMF 20+ (MGO 850+) - New Zealand (8.8 oz) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015P0U3JM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gNECDbQZKTA62
I know it’s expensive but my friend who got it in NZ swears by this stuff and even though my OB was much more mild than hers, it was still well worth it in my opinion. It was soothing and helps it heal.

This is what I was referred to use specifically. My friend got it when she was traveling in New Zealand and said she couldn’t have imagined going through it without this stuff. I know it’s expensive but it might be worth it for when an outbreak occurs again (based on timing I hope yours has passed).
I used Manuka Honey on my sores. I was referred to it because of a friend who got herpes while traveling in New Zealand and that’s what they use and she swore by it. Said she couldn’t imagined not having used it. This is what she suggested: Kiva Raw Manuka Honey, Certified UMF 20+ (MGO 850+) - New Zealand (8.8 oz) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015P0U3JM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_v9.ADbBVZR4SZ
I know it’s expensive but it might be worth it based on how bad your OB is, I’m fortunate that mine was not that extreme but it was still horribly painful and the Manuka Honey soothed it. Mine is located offset to my actual vagina though, I’d be slightly wary of possible yeast infection if you put it directly in/on. Hers was directly on and she was fine. But also, yeast infection is nothing compared to herpes OB.
Sorry for late reply. I am not in US and seems like you can't buy Zinc sulfate liquid in US.

but instead you can buy Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate Powder which is same material.

but you need to dilute it with water. put 4g of powder into 100cc of Distilled water.
then you will have 4% Zinc Sulfate Solution :)
I was just infected with ghsv2 and the one thing that has kept me somewhat sane through all of this has been research. The pain for me was excruciating because it triggered other nerve problems that I have, but the blisters. Man, the blisters.
Before this, I have always been an advocate for colloidal silver. Scrapes, acne, UTIs, a sore throat -- you name it, and it was the cure-all for everything. With the ghsv2, I went on Amazon and bought a gel version, which seems to have accelerated the healing process for me.

I know it doesn't quite give you insight as far as other measures to prevent OBs, but this will, however, help to shorten the time you have 'em and kill anything forming in its tracks.
You're welcome.
>Did you take any antivirals for your first outbreak? I'm really hoping the acyclovir will help and that this outbreak won't last that long. Fingers crossed!
No I did not. I saw a doctor and he did not suggest any. My doctor said, you have HSV and every once in a while when you're body is under stress a blister can show up. But you don't need medication. If this occurs frequently like every month then we could consider. So no antivirals for me. Apply an ointment if possible.

I own this and it works for me. Usually open blisters fade in 2 days after applying. Another 2 days and you can only see a small spot left. One week and nothing is visible. Btw, I'm a dude.
>Just wondering, did you start on suppressive treatment after your initial outbreak? Additionally, how many further outbreaks do you usually get per year? Sorry for all these questions, but it really does feel reassuring to talk to someone who has been through it.
Don't worry about the questions. I'm glad you're looking at objectively. I hope my answers give you some assurance and help you manage this challenge.
To answer your question, No, I did not start suppressive therapy like until 2015. And honestlyI did not need to. But nothing wrong if you did it. I would say that is good management. Also, I self medicated my suppressive therapy and it has worked . So if you consulted your doctor with regards to this, Kudos you're doing better than a lot of people out there. I use this : Quantum Super Lysine, 180 Tabs, 1 Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CMZB4U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fZigzbBQ6J4VF
>I actually have no idea how anyone has the ability to do that during an outbreak. The sores sting like a bitch.
I know it hurts. But usually restrain yourself a couple of days after a breakout . Otherwise it's food. Have a good day. Tc
Yeah, initially I attached a lot of stigma with the disease but when I was a child my dad had some cold sores near his mouth that were diagnosed as herpes and that's when I realized that literally anyone can get it - my dad's monogamous and he had it and my mom tested negative. I probably got it from my dad some time when he wasn't showing symptoms just due to exposure. So really, people shouldn't attach so much stigma to it. It's good to protect oneself from STDs and not indulge in reckless behaviour but it's also important to be well-informed about how prevalent something like herpes is.
So, initially when we started having sex we used condoms for everything - including oral sex. It was pretty cumbersome, my SO hasn't had an OB in a while and he's very fit physically, eats well, takes care of himself, manages stress, so really I could see that it wouldn't be a very big risk if we were to forgo condoms since I'm also already on birth control. The first time we had unprotected sex we had a long conversation about how I was prepared for the consequences and personally I also evaluated my feelings for him and the future of our relationship and realized it was a step in the right direction for me, personally. That might not be the case for you. Honestly, if you don't like latex condoms for oral sex you can try non-latex ones. Or try this Okamoto 004 condom - it's latex but doesn't taste gross and is much thinner than regular condoms. I thought they were pretty great - still not as good as just unprotected sex but better than chunky Trojans.
I just take the regular lysine powder and mix it in some water. 2 scoops. I just looked up super lysine though and it looks pretty good. 1500 mg a day is more than I'm taking though. I'm taking about 800-1000 mg and it's been very effective.

Mind sharing what your outbreaks are like? Are you getting blisters or just the itchy rash? I've had something like this and I dealt with it for months like you have, but nothing seemed to help. Recently I described my symptoms to an expert and they weren't sure what it was, but concluded it didn't sound like herpes at all. Decided to treat it with anti-fungal ointment and that has actually given significant relief. I'm hoping (and looks like it's the case) that what's been going on has just been a fungal infection that took hold after my initial primary OB. You must be very diligent in applying it though, and stick with it for weeks. Give it a shot, it may help you. I can recommend this brand.
I feel like we slept with the same person, Are you from the SF Bay Area? lol, I know the chances of that are super slim, but I'd thought I'd ask. And if you are we should become BFFs.
I'm sorry he's been such an ass... While it is rough for the first few months, it does get better. Right now is a time to heal and focus on you. Drop dating for a while, get to know yourself, relearn your body, and most importantly remember that this is not a dealth sentence.
I recommend this resource, http://www.amazon.com/The-Good-News-About-Bad-ebook/dp/B005LQ6USY/ref=dp_kinw_strp_1
Helped a lot.
I highly suggest getting the medication app GoodRx.
Edit: The app has coupons for many meds. Along with price comparisons. You can search by condition or med. For example: I get $148 insulin for $24 thanks to this app.
