i started a free 14 day unlocator subscription as soon as I saw ad free time was not working. Unlocator works great with on my roku's. I also opened ticket with ad free time and now hope they fix it in next 14 days, they are $3 month cheaper than unlocator.
Yeah I’ve been having the same problems with the Angels. I’m in California and I’ve been using ExpressVPN to watch games all season and all of a sudden it’s not working. It’s really frustrating that even when you pay for MLB TV you still have to deal with this shit
They did respond eventually, and suggested all the standard stuff to me - restart my Apple TV, log out & back in, etc. They stopped replying after a while when nothing worked.
Then I thought it may be the VPN I set up last night (Unlocator) when I changed my DNS settings. I reverted them back and then the games started working. So I guess the Apple TV app doesn't work with Unlocator.. or I set it up wrong.
Sorry that this is probably no help to you with your FireTV stick though
Unlocator is a popular choice for using smart DNS to get around geo-blocked content. Another excellent choice is Overplay. I used them all of last year to watch Orioles games on (I live in VA but the Orioles blackout market is HUGE). It can be a bit daunting to set up intially if you are not very text savvy but they have very good customer service who will help walk you through it. You only need the DNS package which is about $5 a month - just make sure you have a compatible streaming device. I currently use a Roku Ultra. Good luck!
Could be a device difference. I'm guessing they're using a combination of DNS and client IP address this season, which doesn't bode well.
Edit: Went through and rebooted / flushed DNS caches everywhere, and got things working (with Unlocator).
Received an update from Unlocator support last night around midnight. Seems they have moved some things around on their end and would like me to try again. Will try again this evening and keep you posted.
I contacted unlocator support, and this is what they said, "None of the streaming is happening trough Unlocator. We simply take care of the geographic checks – that’s all."
So, I reset my router and BAM, speeds are improved and at the moment, is clear as can be. So weird. And yes, I'm an idiot for not resetting my router previously. Should have known better.
I'll keep PIA in mind - just in case my current situation relapses again.
Thanks for the reply.
1) Why do you say Unlocator doesn’t work very well? I use it and it works fine. 2) Even if you change to a different DNS program it may not work with Disney +. Disney + may detect it and block it. That’s the issue I have with ESPN + (which Disney owns).
With a VPN you’re actually connecting to a different computer outside your region before connecting to the MLB servers. Because you’re connecting to a different computer there may be some latency and therefore not as clear a picture.
With a Smart DNS such as Unlocator you’re not connecting to another computer but simply changing the DNS setting (DNS is like a phone book that looks up the IP address of a computer when you type in a domain name) . Smart DNS fools the MLB servers into thinking that you’re outside the blackout region. The advantage is that there’s no video degradation since you’re not connecting to another computer before connecting to the MLB servers.
the past few weeks Unlocator + laptop worked fine and Roku on the same network did not. The fix of blocking 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 worked perfectly for me. I never would've figured it out without this forum pointing the way.
I had not known the 'Unlocator' had made adjustments with this stream. I have worked thru some late night issues with them a couple time this year on other MLB problems. I had not contacted them as all other devices seems to work fine, did not know they made adjustments. I'll log some outbound packets from the Roku and see what I can find, and contact them myself. I thought MLB changed how they received the location of the device. danbravo50 - thanks for pointing this out.
Glad I’m not the only one! There was an issue around Friday where MLB and Disney would not load. Unlocator support “moved some things around” and then MLB and and Disney could load again. Disney works, but now MLB is giving blackouts, but only on Roku. My AndroidTV works. No filtering on my router. If anything was going to default to a google DNS, I would think it would be the AndroidTV.
Did this solution work for you?
I use StrongVPN and my issue is that games from the local team, the Dodgers are blacked out even when they are away. This just started last week. I tried the above solution on my Asus router and it did not fix the issue. Doing a tracert, I can see that both 8.8.8.8 are directed to the router.
Yes, this is what solved the issue for me, I had to confirm my IP address on the Unlocator account page, something I don't recall having to do in the past so it wasn't something that I'd thought of causing the problem. Thanks
I had a ton of trouble this year, and then figured out the problem. Once you set up your Apple atV, you have to login to a web browser to add your external IP to Unlocator. But if you’re using an iPhone with the latest iOS, it’s masking your actual IP, so Unlocator adds the wrong IP to your account. Once I turned that off and logged in to Unlocator again, I was good to go.
I was recently using ProtonVPN up until about a week ago when loading in-market games and even login attempts from Incognito browser windows results in unexpected errors. I'm guessing this is due to my VPN being detected and blocked from authenticating.
Is there a particular protocol/region that works for Nord? I'm pretty frustrated because I just upgraded to a paid VPN with Proton and it is still blocked.
I figure out what the problem was, I think. I hadn't clicked the radio button in my Unlocator account settings to update my current IP address, it was showing red, clicked to update and it turned green and now it seems to be operating correctly. It's odd because I don't remember ever needing to do that in the past.
Has anyone had any success with Unlocator yet? I've used it the past few years and it's worked fine, this season, no go. Having set it up correctly, several times in fact, and still seeing that blackout banner makes me think MLB must be using your account information to set your physical location, even when using a different DNS, how else would they be able to know? The downside to this is what happens if I'm in a different market I'll still be blocked from seeing my in-market teams.
Unlocator said they changed some things around in responding to my support email but nothing has changed, exact same behavior.
Depends on the unblocking service, I think. I used to be able to watch those back when Yonder worked well because it would mimic being in a different country. But I've never been able to get the national ESPN broadcasts with Unlocator SmartDNS.
my Unlocator smart dns worked on firestick and xbox after reinstalling app today (didnt work yesterday)... just got this update from unlocator..
"We apologize for the downtime we have made a temporary solution for now since the issue with the main server is still on going we are working 24/7 with our providers to resolve it Please restart your device(s) and try again. Let us know if the issue persists."
What’s the latest here? Did not attempt to watch a game yesterday but today Unlocator is not working with mlb tv. I tried normal DNS without Unlocator and I could watch any game except my local game (which is the worst).
Unlocator finally got back to me, they said they came up with a "temporary solution" but it still isn't working. I am away for a few days starting tomorrow so if they haven't fixed it by then (my game is on right now so I'm resigned to just listening on the radio at this point) I'll be looking again.
FYI just got this response from Unlocator:
We are currently experiencing an unpredictable outage with one of our upstream providers and are working with them to restore services as soon as possible. We'll let you know once we have an update. Thank you for your patience.
It was working for me last night, now AppleTV won’t even load the home screen if the Unlocator SmartDNS is enabled. Also getting blackout notices on a PC connected to a router that’s configured with their DNS.
Informed support, waiting to hear back from them.
I posted a nested reply but will also post here for more visibility.
Unlocator had been working for me, then over the weekend it stopped. I put in a support ticket, and they've fixed things.
I'd encourage anyone who'd had an issue to give it another try.
Seems like I had a similar experience last year with the first couple weeks having a bump or two, then it settled in and worked fine the rest of the season.
I've used Unlocator for a few years on Roku and was able to bypass blackout games with no issues. I have my streaming devices connected to the router. It still works on my PC but not Roku. Anyone else experiencing the same?
Unlocator responded to my ticket early this morning that they think it should be working again now.

I just ran some tests on games I'm supposed to be blacked out on - and it worked.

I am back in business!
Unlocator i found to be unreliable. And same for another similar service I tried that I'm forgetting. It works sometimes and not other times and then eventually it just stops working all together. If you're going to do this, why not just take it a step farther?
I'm not positive that deleting/reinstalling clears data the same as a force-quit does. So I'd still suggest giving that a try just to be sure.
Also looks like there's been an update since Apr 15th which is the version I have, so they could be trying some shenanigans. (this is also why I force-quit vs delete/reinstall)
Double check your Regions setting is MLB & NHL & Disney+ GB.
If nothing else gets you going, then best to contact Unlocator support. In the past they've been responsive to my questions (with understanding of timezone differences) and they've gotten things working.
I have had problems logging in to with the Unlocator DNS service and my AppleTV these last 2 days. Both times the vendor tweeked a few things and the problem was resolved. I don’t know what to expect going forward. Things were fine until recently. Thinking about sailing the high seas.
I use the smart DNS Unlocator on my AppleTV. It worked all last season, but recently stopped working, and I get the blackout game message. I’ve manually configured the Unlocator dns on my AppleTV, and it looks like the MLB app thinks I’m in a different time zone, but errors each time I try to watch a game that is blacked out.
I am also using the Unlocator DNS. Sorry, I should've made that clear.
I can log into MLBtv but when I try to watch any game, all I get is the spinning baseball. I've tried rebooting everything, uninstalling the app.
This happened to me last night on PS5 and Xbox Series X. It started working near the 7th inning of the Braves-Marlins game. Now it seems to be back to not working unfortunately. Just put in a support ticket with Unlocator.
Yeah Twitter has people with similar issues, best thing to do is log a ticket with Unlocator and they’ll “shift some stuff around”. It’s a cat and mouse game all year with them and MLBtv. You know for a sport losing ground in popularity yearly,
I’m on Unlocator too. MLB will just show you no games once you’re logged in. Might have better luck watching on a PC. But yea I feel like this happened 1 day last year too so hoping Unlocator fixes it in the coming days.
Not necessarily. A smart dns will work just as well without playing the cat-and-mouse game of which vpn server will work. Unlocator smart dns works just fine and it’s half off with code MLB2022. Cost me $25 for a year.
You don't mention what device you're using but did you tell the app not to track you? In the past Unlocator has mentioned that if you do allow tracking it won't work, I'm not sure if that's your problem but deleting the app, reinstalling it, and making sure it's not allowed to track might fix the problem.
With GetFlix DNS it’s a very simple change to network settings on the AppleTV. Just change the DNS setting to manual and insert the best DNS server. GetFlix offers East, Central or West servers so depending on your location insert the best option. Very simple and works great.
ExpressVPN hasn't worked on any of my devices (pc, android, firesticks) for a few years. I can't access Rox games from CO at all. I can't find any 'legit' way to stream live Rox, Nuggets or Avs. Such a horrible business model from those leagues making it so hard for anyone without cable/satellite to follow our local teams.
You should be able to bypass the blackouts with NordVPN. Just check your device if GPS location services is turned on, if it is, disable it and it should work.
Here check this out, these guys have more info on it:
Looks like they've updated the app a few times recently. If the current version still doesn't work for you, try uninstalling it and reinstalling an earlier version from this season. At least, that is what I would try.

Kodi is an open-source media center app, available to install on a variety of computers and Android devices: https://kodi.tv/download
By default, Kodi includes a bunch of legal but unofficial addons for accessing streaming content. (There are some pirate content addons too, but those are not included by default.) The MLB.TV addon is one of these legal but unofficial ones included -- enable the addon within Kodi, sign in with your MLB.TV account, and start watching! https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=262745
If you need any further tips, let me know.
Try changing the DNS server of your computer's network connection, then rebooting (or just clearing the DNS cache) and trying again. You could use Google for DNS: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Or you could use OpenDNS: https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/
If that doesn't help, I'd be curious if you'd see anything unusual at ipleak.net
Just tried resetting everything. Logged out, restarted, restarted modem and grabbed a new IP from my ISP. Registered it with Unlocator, logged in to MLBTV app, and boom.
Still blacked out.
And nearly blacking out with rage. (Not really. Just being dramatic. MLB is preposterous.)
Dodgers in SoCal. NordVPN. Use iPhone, Fire Stick, and Chromecast with GoogleTV. Fire Stick seems fine. GoogleTV I can get to work with coaxing. IPhone flat stopped working. This all started yesterday for me.
Hmm, all good info to hear thank you. I guess my question is even more general, what even is the DNS doing? I don't see the connection between me entering the DNS info on my PS4, and me holding the Unlocator account, to get this all to work.
Also, how frequently would you say "likely sometimes" is? When something does go down, do they have customer support that you can get in touch with? An active twitter? Or are you flying on your own?
In my experience you will likely sometimes have issues where it doesn't work. Then you have to hope they fix it in a timely fashion, and they don't always. Also I was starting to have a problem where when I had it set up, it was not possible to log in to at all. I could only log in when I did not use the Unlocator DNS. I'm telling you this so you don't pay in advance for a year, only to find out it stops working next week.
Been struggling to adapt to update also. Been using Unlocator SmartDNS for a few years. Stopped working with update. May have defeated by loading DNS to my router vice the AppleTV Network Settings. Todays Nats v Orioles is working now.
I was having some trouble with Unlocator last week, so I disabled it and went with my provider's DNS.
When I was playing around with the new ATV app today my local team's game was shown as being blacked out. I closed app. After doing that, the local game was no longer marked as a blackout game.
It remains to be seen if I can actually stream a blacked-out game in real time.
Yonder hasn't worked for me yet this season. Their "there was a fire" post is still posted on their help page, though when communicating with their customer service they said the server migration from the fire has been completed so this doesn't give me high hopes.
Unlocator seems to be hit or miss. I was able to stream one game but haven't had any luck since. In looking at other forums Unlocator has historically been unreliable but give it a shot and maybe you'll get lucky.
I am watching the Cardinals through YTTV while connected to ExpressVPN right now. I have had no issues. It took a couple of locations and some refreshing to get my “new” location recognized by YTTV, but once I got it connected it has been all good.
I had no luck with ExpressVPN on Saturday or Sunday. I ended up cancelling them and getting PIA. My basic smoke test worked on Sunday, but the real test will be tomorrow during the first Nats game of the season.
NordVPN has been working great. Set your SmartDNS settings that they provide after you enroll your IP at the router level and good to go. Only downside, Hulu no longer works. Baseball is more important.
Setting at the router level allows all devices to work including appletv, fire stick, etc.
I'm in the same boat as you guys, can't get anything to work with my Shield TV and , NordVPN and neither worked. Tried 2 DNS spoofing and they didn't work either. I'm about ready to give up. Wished MLB would just get rid of the blackout restrictions already. I'll be keeping an eye out on this thread to see if you guys can get anything working.
Haven't tried this particular setup but CyberGhost is working for me on other devices.
Can you turn GPS location services off on the Firestick?
Check the FAQ here:
So spring training games aren't blacked out to begin with. As for the regular season, I've never had any problems with CyberGhost, but then again I'm streaming on a PC browser not an Nvidia Shield.
Isn't Nvidia Shield Android based? If it is, then it uses GPS data to locate you, not much any VPN can do with that, it's the same reason MLB app on iOS and Android phones don't work. Check the FAQ section here:
On reports from several people that Unlocator is working … egg on my face.
I realized I have Eero router with Eero plus security. It was preventing custom DNS. Turning off the Eero security functions allowed me to enable the custom Unlocator DNS and circumvent blackout on Apple TV.
Opening day (April 1) Unlocator would not allow my MLB login using Roku or W10. Turned off Smart DNS and could login but local team was blocked. Received email April 2 saying they were working on it and to reconfirm my settings and follow steps.
Saturday April 3 did a ipconfig/flushdns and had to reinstall MLB app for Roku. Re-checked settings. Now the local MLB team that is usually blocked was in the clear. Not the Game of the Day.
For now Unlocator is working as it should with a Roku model 3810 and a Asus router. Will report back if anything changes. First time using Smart DNS due to local Sinclair RSN and YTTV unable to reach an agreement.
Last couple of years I have had to do the same thing to get Unlocator to work with my AppleTV . Double check everything is setup correctly (especially making sure MLB is selected in the Regions setting). Delete the MLB app, reboot the AppleTV, re-install, re-login. I usually end up doing this a couple of times during the season.
Sorry if this is the "works for me" solution, I know it can be a your mileage may vary kinda thing. I wish MLB would wake up to their antiquated blackout rules.
Good luck!
FWIIW Unlocator support sent out the following. Take it for what you will.
Greetings from Unlocator Team.
We have made new changes to MLB that proved to resolve the recent issues for our users. We kindly ask you to restart your devices and try again. Please let us know your feedback.
Our team is up and ready 24/7 to monitor our service for MLB TV and other channels and we will be ready for any problem or issue that may arise unexpectedly.
If you are still having issues with MLB TV after this message, then please follow this list of steps that are reported and tested to be successful in ruling away such issues with MLB TV:
Unlocator is garbage, do not pay for that service. I made the mistake of paying again this year before seeing others were having issues. Support just parrots the same steps on the website.
VPN is the only solution I have found but does not work on Apple TV.
Unlocator are a bunch of liars. This is one of their scripted responses. I dumped them last year because of rarely working service. Switches to yonder last season and had no issues this year though appears no smart dns bypass works.
When you say "different IP address", which one are you looking at? There's the device-specific address for the local network which is doled out by the router. Often something like -- that's called the private address. Then there's the public IP address on the WAN side of the router - which is what the services see and which is used to define your location for purposes of blackouts and so on. If you don't have access to the router's admin pages you can check it with external services such as
Yesterday I tried both DNS4me and Unlocator with my AppleTV4k and laptop for the same thing as you - to watch a blacked out game. DNS4me failed on both platforms. Unlocator sort of worked - as in it tended to fail but did work on both platforms a couple times, and stayed working once I got the stream started.
I'd suggest opening a ticket with whichever service is your preference and see what they say. I'd expect the good ones will be striving to find ways around whatever MLB was doing, as they don't make money if people don't use them.
I was having problems with Unlocator on my AppleTV and getting an error message when I tried to login to the MLB app. What I ended up doing was reverting to my normal automatic DNS and logging into the MLB, which worked successfully. I obviously couldn't see my local game. Then I set up the manual DNS per the Unlocator instructions. I went back to the MLB app, which I was still logged into, and was able to play my local game just fine. Posting in case it helps someone else.
Unfortunately I've been unable to get DNS4me to work with MLBtv today. On laptop browser launching the video stream fails with an unstated error, on AppleTV4K it shows the blackout notification.
Unlocator has been working though on both platforms.
I did contact DNS4me about it, will see what they have to say.
Appreciate the input. Currently on the trial period.
It *is* actually working right now, I'm watching a blacked out game as I type this.
Understood though that other options better.
Does ExpressVPN have a smartDNS option? Can't run VPN on AppleTV4K, my current routers aren't VPN capable, and I need a solution that ideally is invisible since I have non-techie family members. Opening MLB app instead of YouTubeTV app is about the most I can expect them to be able to manage. :)
Something is up for sure. Yeah, the Angels game (which I care about) was working flawlessly today using ExpressVPN set to San Francisco. Unlike yesterday.
But I too have the San Diego game blacked out and the Bay Area games saying they are blacked out but I can watch. Weird.
Yeah I can only get ExpressVPN to work on my PC. My Firestick 4K and my Fire Cube will not allow the VPN to get around the blackout. Super frustrating, but I just connect my PC to my TV via HDMI and it is fine, just not as convenient as it would be straight off the Firestick, or Cube.
Yes. If I go into ExpressVPN app on my fire stick, enable it, then go into MLB app, I can watch games I'm normally blacked out from. At least I was able to do that all last year and it worked yesterday. There are no games I'm blacked out from today but I did try turning the VPN on again today anyway and it seemed to work.
Jumping in here, you got the ExpressVPN app to work on the Firestick through the MLB app and watch a game you would normally be blacked out from? I tried to use the Firestick on YTTV with the ExpressVPN app and it does not work. YTTV still knows my actual location.
I’ve actually gotten it to work with a VPN. But some cities you select don’t work. On IPVanish I first tried Atlanta today and it seemed to be blocked (couldn’t even connect), but Charlotte worked and no blackout for me of the Orioles v Red Sox
I'm trying to use IPVanish with Kodi add-on and whenever the VPN is connected trying to start a stream gives an error. At first it says it can't login, but then it will just say there's an error. The log shows an error about an unplayable stream or something like that. I'm trying this on a FireTV Stick. Anyone have luck getting this to work?
Unlocator (trial) with Roku IS working to get around blackout.
As noted on the help page Amazon Fire TV stick did not work due to built in location services.
I started the trial account because my paid account for Getflix Smart DNS is NOT working on any device for this year.
I didn't buy from Express, but they offer a very similar DNS service packaged with their VPN. Their site has set up instructions that you can use for different devices. It comes down to changing two numbers in your internet settings after you register your IP address. Take a look at Unlocator as well. They sell a stand alone smart DNS service that is pretty popular among folks trying to stream blocked content. Remember that most of this is harder to implement on cell phones or tablets. Those have location services and gps, which the mlb tv app uses to determine your location. You have to also download a gps spoofing app and make your phone use it instead of the actual gps signal. I know that's in the developer settings on Android. I'm not sure how it works on apple stuff.
FYI, even if you don't have T-Mobile or know someone with T-Mobile, you can likely get your own full subscription for $5 starting March 26 -- a lot of T-Mobile customers trade their free ones for $5 Amazon gift credit over at Slickdeals:
https://slickdeals.net/f/12878884-it-s-back-free-mlb-tv-subscription-for-t-mobile-customers-on-3-26
The only limitation is that you can't use the T-Mobile subscription over another carrier's mobile network (i.e. Sprint or AT&T) or you risk having it terminated. But at $5 it's a lot less risky than possibly having a full price subscription terminated for sharing!
I just use MLB.TV at home on wifi anyway -- you can disable mobile data for the app on your phone too just to be safe. The Pro Baseball Radio app is an alternative for listening to games on mobile data too:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.toddbrady.proBaseballRadio&hl=en_US
Funny ,this year I used IPVanishVPN from Toronto and had no blackouts at the past I had my account flags for using VPN, but this year far as the customer service goes you have to escalate it to a supervisor,Their front line people are just minimum-wage workers answering phones with no answers
Lately I've been playing with both Unlocator and Getflix and they both seem to be having random issues this season with getting blocked out. MLB seems to have stepped up their blackout detection this year.
Same, looks to be working but now the LA/West Coast games are blacked out and I'm not even there! Do you know how to force your location to one location or another using Unlocator?
Loving the Catch Up feature, hope they use that somehow to make watching highlights super easy for already completed games. 2 games at once seems to be very nice too.
Are you blacked out of local games, national TV games, or all games?
First, I would set it up on another device (a computer should be easy) to see if Unlocator is still working. If you get the same results there, then you would know the issue is with Unlocator.
If you didn't get blacked out on the other device, suggesting Unlocator was still working, then I'd verify my router had IPV6 disabled and sign out of the Xbox One app, and uninstall and reinstall it.
I have 2nd gen Fire TV and MLB Tv and zero issues with IPVanish. I am in NY market and load up Atlanta ISP to watch mets/yanks.
So the problem is with you. Plus don't complain about the cost of the service. You spent the money for MLB tv and it is very clear blackouts apply. You are trying to get around that but that is on YOU. Not MLB..
Thought I would add this response I got a few weeks back from Unlocator. I am being forced to use my laptop to Chromecast option for now. I just wish I could cast from my phone, but GPS is preventing that.
"We have tested the MLB app on PS4 with and without Unlocator DNS set up on the Playstation console. In both cases, there were issues that prevented the video from playing. This indicates that there are issues with the MLB PS4 app itself. I’m afraid that this is out of our control. In this case, we will have to wait for an official fix from MLB."
Sounds like your DNS may be misconfigured.
Have you removed the Unlocator settings (DNS servers) from your router or other devices?
I would also try setting your router DNS to a public DNS like Google (8.8.8.8), and make sure your devices aren't overriding that. Then reboot your router and devices to clear any cache and try again.
All videos are now blacked out for us. We even tried IPVanish and it still won't get the video playing. Audio works. But all games automatically say are blacked out.
It has gotten to where MLB has given a direct number to call them in order to I guess give us some step by step instructions. So far they recommended deleting the app from my amazon cloud. That was impossible because we had a private seller set up the firestick and app.
But yes, all video is now blacked out on ours. Completely different from OP but it seems it continues to be a problem.
Have you verified that IPVanish is working with MLB on another device on your network, like a PC?
If so, it might be failing on the Fire Stick because of IPv6. Trying disabling IPv6 on your router if possible:
If you use a VPN or a service such as ir Unlocator, this will bypass the local market restriction. This will require a little bit of router setup but instructions are on the services website.
I have been using Yonder with my Roku for the past two years.
They are blocking usage of some VPN's. Some still work. SetupVPN is a free chrome extension that has worked well for me so far this year after my usual VPN (VPN Unlimited) stopped working. I would suggest that. I've also heard that Unlocator will work as well, but I think there is a small fee.
Fake GPS has also worked for me on Android.
Not all VPNs work with MLB TV. There are a few Smart DNS services that I know from personal experience will work. Look at YonderTV and Unlocator. They both work fine. I prefer Yonder because it's $30 yearly versus $50 for Unlocator.
I tried Unlocator and YonderTV. Both let you watch your local teams. Going with yonder for the remainder of the season. Ran into some stuttering video with Unlocator plus Yonder is $20 cheaper per year.
