The biggest thing for me when I moved to overnights is I blacked our my room so I could go to sleep. I use something like this on my windows in my bedroom. https://www.amazon.com/BLKT-Window-Film-Blackout-Privacy/dp/B00OL1HCF0/ref=pd_aw_lpo_201_tr_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FGKCSV0DCB8F64C8S4X4
Having a dark room did wonders for my sleeping. Also make sure the room is a comfortable temperature and try and go to sleep at the same time everyday. Being in a routine helps tremendously.
Drink lots of water and try to eat a somewhat healthy diet and if you can do some sort of exercise, even if it is just walking outside when you get home from work for a half an hour.
Edit: Welcome to the aviation industry.
That bullshit is why I got a no soliciting sign that specifically says no religion. Otherwise the missionaries just think they're special.

Rough. fyi I had blackout curtains and switched to https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DZZSHH1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
room is pitch black all the time with the door closed now

These are the nicetown 100% blackout curtains on Amazon. These have worked great for me.
If interested, make sure you get the "100% blackout" version. They are a solid notch above the standard version.
Just take them year-round.
A 180 pill bottle of 5000 IU's of Vitamin D3 costs 13.86 on Amazon (that's about $0.08 per day). Buy one every 6 months and you're set for the whole year.
We forge crankshafts in an open die setup. Where top dies lift with the press, bottoms stay put. Operator puts a 90lb rolled billet of steel heated to 1250°F inside the press. Hits it in the blockers(aka:rough mold) and then flips it into finish dies, hits it again. That press operates at 6,500-7,500 metric tons of pressure. This puts all the detail work and edges on the part. Then it goes through a trim blade with punch. It travels down to go through a twister witch uses a die cut into segements mounted on tumblers to twist the crankshaft to desired shape, then hits in a calibration die to ensure the part is still square between rod and main bearings. I use CNC and manual mills and EDM machines to make the tooling and dies and hand grind them for smooth finish. Using precision measuring devices for quality acceptance. One set of my dies can make up to 5,000 parts. http://tinypic.com/r/2afmvj4/8
Wages are decent considering super low cost of living here in rural Indiana. We make ford 5.0l and v6 ecoboost crankshafts and GM v6 3.6l
Apps to help you give up bad habits. Something I’ve started to use to keep track of stuff is the app Habit Hunter (link IOS or linkandroid); not only keeps track of habits you’re trying to break but also keeps track of daily stuff and upcoming events you have to work towards. It makes it a game as well which is fun, so if you do your dailies you get exp and you get coins and stuff. it might not be for everyone but I personally like stuff I can chip away at.
Hope this helps!
I recommend these in addition to blackout curtains:
https://www.amazon.com/Blackout-EZ-Sunlight-Blocking-Customizable/dp/B006S69AH4
I like these. I actually cut horizontal slits in my TempurPedic pillow and inserted the thin headphones in there. But if you want to wear them on both ears, they really are quite thin and comfortable to sleep in.
I'm a freak about slepp (I was this way prior to working nights 😂), so I have black cling on my windows plus two sets of blackout curtains, a white noise machine, ear plugs, and a weighted blanket. I also don't heat my room. I sleep from 0900 to 1700 on the days that I work and maybe 0900 to 1200 or 1300 on the days that I'm not back that night. I'm definitely sleepier in general now - like I fall asleep on the couch watching TV with my family more than I did, but I always did that. I like my shift, my co-workers, and the differential, who if this is your dream job, go for it and enjoy!
How in the world could you sleep with these on?
I like silicone ear plugs or a combo eye mask/headphones set that connects to my phone via Bluetooth.
I got mine on Amazon on a flash deal, it's this one. General consensus is no more than 10% of your body weight, other than that just look for good reviews and glass fill.
Couple of tips:
A weighted blanket made the sleep I could get deeper and I woke more rested. I use this one from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HT27DRY
and make sure to get a cover for it, too: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08RBLWP99 cause that bad boy is not washable, lol
try listening to something that is designed to help you sleep like sleep music or a sleep podcast or youtube video with soothing visuals.
There are many sleep podcasts, lots of people like Nothing Much Happens. nothingmuchhappens.com
Northwoods Baseball is another, a fake baseball game on AM radio. It is so relaxing and charming! sleepbaseball.com
I also have a cozy story podcast that is soft spoken soothing adventures (like going to a fairy spa or a steampunk circus) on YT with charming watercolor illustrations or on any podcast app. youtube.com/@Inklyrion
It just seems like the issue is maximizing the sleep time you do have. I hope this helps.
Strange... If anything I'd recommend a yellow light as it will avoid you having blue light in your room.
Something like these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L8CQKPS/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Insulated/thermal black out curtains, help keep it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Keep your entire house as dark as possible, to gain the cooling effects. Curtains like these , avoid the ones with big grommets for the curtain rod, they let in LOTS of light.
If you can get a decent window fan to draw OUT warm air, that helps, make sure you have enough circulation in the room where that fan is located, otherwise it probably won't help.
If you have a ceiling fan put it in summer mode, it'll rotate counter-clockwise, and smaller fans might work as well.
I hope you find a solution quickly. It's murder sleeping in a puddle of sweat.
If you've already got a set, I would try adding another set. You can go with the same ones you have if you like them well enough or try something else. I have two sets of these from Target. I also have this blackout window film on each of my windows. I used tension rods within the windows to hang the first set and then used the "wrap-around" style curtain rods to hang the second set. It's very effective in blocking out every bit of light!
My only bedroom window is a sliding glass door with vertical dimming blinds, Curtains did not work. So I went with Film. It's Awesome
I track my cycle with this app. We're going to try for kids in a couple of years and so it'll be nice to have several years of data and I can track ovulation.
Also, this app is still really good at predicting my irregular cycle.
Up since August 2020. VELIMAX Static Cling Total Blackout Window Film. On a sliding glass door south facing no less. My bedroom is pitch black No leakage
You can get static cling blackout film that sticks to your window, or you could cut black foam core to press into the window frame. I would also use tension rods to hang room-darkening curtains, or even just stick up the foam core over the entire window space, depending on the type of windows and the wall material.
Get a white noise machine, too. I used really flat headphones embedded in my pillow to make a pillow speaker and wear a custom ear plug in my top ear. I can listen to whatever as I fall asleep, but between the ear plug and the white noise machine, I can't really hear anything else outside of my room.
With https://www.amazon.com/Velimax-Blackout-Stickers-Blocking-Darkening/dp/B073TVRQ5D/?th=1
my room is pitch black
Definitely wear sunglasses, and avoid going outside as much as you can. Get f.lux on your devices to cut down on artificial sunlight. There's no nocturnal mode, unfortunately, but I change my location to somewhere that suits my schedule and mess around with it through the year.
Getting sunlight during your active times is important too. A Happy Light like people use to treat seasonal depression (which you may also find yourself affected by) is useful. Winter really sucks for us, but at least it will be dark when you go to bed.
f.lux is free and adding it is one of the most helpful things I did to prepare for the schedule change. It changes the colors on your screen to warmer hues at sunset so the blue light doesn't keep you awake. I recommend you guys install it on your devices and set your location to some place where the sun rises and sets in sync with his sleep cycle. You'll have to change it periodically with the seasons. Right now, mine is set to Alaska's Attu Station.
I'm trying a few breakfast meetups through my local sub, hit the gym closest to me when I feel up to it...(I recommend Planet Fitness because it's 24/7 and quite cheap), and eventually I'm going to get back to being a Meetup.com Moderator to try to host a few breakfasts there to see what comes of it.
Why breakfast?
I can do it at 3 am at Denny's, we can see if people get along, and move from there, and it's a public place so people feel comfortable.
This was a game changer for me

Cheap and effective!
This time of the year, when you wake up in the after noon and its already dark, having a sunrise light to wake up to works wonders, vs an alarm
Me im home 8am, bed 12pm, wake 8pm
I'm very light-sensitive, so I often use a sleep mask in conjunction with my heavy black-out shades.
The one other thing that's helped me sleep the best is a white noise generator. Even if I'm not aware of it, I'm constantly being subjected to the noise of the day people around me, even if it's just the kids playing down the street or someone a couple blocks over mowing their lawn.
Anyway, I got a white noise generator for other reasons and OMFG it made such a difference in my sleep! I use a 'thunderstorm' setting: the constant light 'rain' helps mask out more subtle background sounds, while intermittent bursts of 'thunder' helps me sleep through intermittent loud bass sounds (lawn mower, vacuum cleaner, motorcycles, etc). I got them for a couple friends who had sleep issues and they've slept ever so much better since as well.
There are white noise generator apps that you can get, or you can loop things like RainyMood or combine Rain and Fire at soundrown -- or there are a bunch of places that have similar sounds available. Note that you may have to look around for precisely the right one for you: there are some that I don't like because the 'rain' is too soft or the 'thunder' too loud or it's in a slightly irritating key. So if you play a minute or two of a specific sound and it irritates you, keep trying other sounds or combinations until you find the one that's right for you.
Yes ear plugs are amazing for when I used to work night shift. I bought this dispenser
Moldex M6644 Extra-Soft Sparkplug Earplugs (250 per Dispenser) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015MG2ZW2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_G6N20JNE6KJ1F61BZHAN
I use this in my room. Easy to install, easy to removed. It's reusable too.
Buy a heated vest yo
Link does not include batteries but I believe you can use any phone charger//power bank
Never owned a heated jacket but my friend who works outside all winter owns the Dewalt one and swears by it in the New England winters
I drove a 400mi route delivering freight to Napa parts stores 5 nights a week for 10 years. I always found that music would zone me out and make me sleepy. I listened to talk radio on sirius xm. I do podcasts at my current non driving job. Keeping it cold in the truck helped. There are also Vitamin B patches that helped me out a lot with steady sustained energy without the energy drink crash.
You can use the costco green tea bags as cold brew just fine, but while I haven't shopped around and tried a lot of brands, the one I use is "Bigelow perfectly mint" https://www.amazon.com/Bigelow-Plantation-Tea-Caffeinated-Individual/dp/B000GFYRIU
I like to use Valerian root extract. Mix the recommended dose (2ml) into a hot tea. If you're not a big fan of tea try Arizona Half&Half (it's sweeter than other half-and-halfs). It pretty much just relaxes you, but I find it more effective than most sleep aids. And it doesn't cause drowsiness the next day! Also, it's not homeopathic, in case that may have been a concern. This link is to the same one that I use: https://www.amazon.com/Horbaach-Valerian-Extract-Liquid-Drops/dp/B07NSH2TL6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=valerian+extract&qid=1630661324&sr=8-1
Hue lights. You can set them to a schedule to be a nice warm color when you get home. Dim red color with a motion sensor if you have to use the washroom in the middle of the day. Also you can use them as an alarm clock when you have your earplugs in. They sell double curtain rods like this that you can have a blackout liner close to the window and a fancier one that suits your tastes closer to you. Or just double up on the blackout curtains like I do.
Get something like .[blackout film](http://VELIMAX Static Cling Total Blackout Window Film Privacy Room Darkening Window Tint Black Window Cover 100% Light Blocking No Glue (35.4 x 157.4 inches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DZZSHH1/ref=cm_sw_r_apanp_2ZxCoMU4hXydX) I use it in my bedroom. Sliding glass doors.
I hang blackout curtains on the linked frame. It feels flimsy, but it’s still standing.
I want you to know I am here for you and you deserve quality sleep! I'm so sorry this is happening to you and that your neighbors are not helping. I don't know if this will help you or not but some things that have helped me are
1) Moving my bed away from the wall so it's not touching it
2)!Setting up a triangle of fans around my bed
3) Using my phone to play 10 hours of rain on a tin roof sounds (I found it much more effective than white noise because since there's variety in the sound of the rain it helps me not notice other odd sounds)
4) sleep mask that covers my ears and eyes like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LG4K19C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_5CDD5S4HNR3DMTQTHAP8
Hope this helps!

Why not both
Shoot your question out over on r/flashlight where you'll learn way more about flashlights than you'd ever expect haha
I use CBD to help me sleep. These have CBD and melatonin: https://richardshemp.com/gummies/
For energy I use these B12 patches: https://www.amazon.com/B12-Patches-Natural-Overall-Well-Being/dp/B07H9LDTQ5
You can find the same ones on ebay for about $5 but you have to wait forever for them to come from china.
better then curtains

I switched to it from curtains 3 months ago and wow, room is pitch black any hour of the day
Nutricost Caffeine Pills 200mg, 120 Caps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FWQ8CLA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8P.NFbXF9J31A?psc=1
1 pill I think is like drinking 4 cups of coffee so follow the directions carefully. Have and good one fellow nightshifter 💤😁
Even a no soliciting sign wasn't good enough. I had to get very specific with this one to stop the Mormons.
To fall asleep when it's day outside, you could try:
I would advise to get up in the early afternoon since this allows you do have some daylight while you're fresh and you can do grocery shopping etc. before the other people leave from work.
You'll be spent in the mornings anyway. That said, it's easy to catch a 2nd wind when the daylight comes, and this could move your sleeping schedule further back. You could try wearing yellow glasses on the way home to help with melatonin production.
If you're gonna use any type of screen device in the morning, I recommend you install something like https://justgetflux.com/. This type of software is available for all operating systems and also for mobile phones (for example https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.lumen&hl=en).
Skip the blackouts. I just bought these and I’m utterly in love with them.
I keep one at home for day sleeping and one at SO for city light sleeping.
They bubble over lashes, adjustable, super soft, don’t squish eyelashes.
Sleep Mask 3 Pack, Upgraded 3D... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0832GKW4Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I recommend drinking this if you’re willing to try a new alternative. Celestial Seasonings Herbal Tea, Sleepytime Extra, 20 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CRAU3LM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_87hnFb77P65SW the herbs it has in it relax the nervous system and promote deep sleep. This is usually what i consume and make sure you don’t drink any caffeine 4-5 hours prior to clocking out and going home. And exercise when you wake up daily if possible
You can try noise blocking curtains if the sound is coming through your window. I’m looking into getting these for traffic sounds that bleed in through my window.
Happy Sun Lamp,GLIME 32000 Lux... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W8SW98N?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I bought this after I was working 2 shift in the winter when I couldn’t take the foggy days anymore. Wasn’t a believer until I tried it! I turn it on the lowest setting soon as I get to work and turn it off when I leave. Game changer. Still take vitamin d but for blues due to lack of sunlight I don’t notice it now.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AY8G2JA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is what I use. I love them. They don't itch and make my face hot. I prefer to use a portable speaker with white noise playing.
I was having this same issue. I recently got one of these and put a deep sleep playlist from Spotify on. I also recently started taking Zzzquil. I feel like a combination of those two things have helped significantly. Now if only I can stop getting woken up by my bladder 2 hours before I actually need to be up.
Been on nights for 18 years.
Ear plugs! You have to make they're the type of earplugs you can roll up and be sure to stick them waay down into your ear canal. Dead silence.
I suggest the Mack's Original Soft Foam Earplugs - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005XJ4FX6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2hKZCbSY4JQ29
I used an app called "Silent Time" that is no longer on the play store, but [I think this is it's successor](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scheduletime.smartsilent)?
Thanks for the recommendations. I've thought about switching back to a physical fan for white noise. I do use Ambio on my Android phone quite a bit. In particular, I love the "Starship" sound set, with spacy synth wash sounds, and nice low steady roar of the Starship engines.
Get Blackout curtains to start. It might be a good idea to have a talk with your family and neighbors. Some may not realize your schedule, others may not realize just how loud they're being. You can also look into getting an alarm clock for deaf people and use ear plugs if the noise is still an issue. Good luck!
I use a combination of tint cling and blackout curtains--and my blinds. My curtains are just the basic gray blackout from target.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GGKLDG2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
I got these in the burgundy and they work well. I also have blinds underneath the curtains so they're not dealing with full sunlight.
I would recommend floor length if you're worried about light spilling for underneath. I put cardboard boxes up against mine at the bottom. I also laid a dark sheet on top of the curtains so none comes out of the top (the blinds makes it all awkward but I'm in an apartment and don't want the hassle of removing and replacing). I also tape the curtains to the walls; you have to be careful about this to not ruin the paint.
As far as confusing myself about time of day, I closed my curtains and hang out in my room for a couple hours before bedtime. I turn on my bedside lamp like I used to to at night. The bulb is a soft yellow, and it helps me trick my body into thinking it's night.
I posted about this awhile back. I found this it's great. There's lots of different labels you can put on it. I just use the no soliciting one myself. Knock Nanny Door Bell Cover, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OABOHRM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WiBQxb4EECKPY
I can't use earplugs to sleep, i move alot and they irritate my ear canals so i had to look for alternatives. The older version of this bad boy has seriously been worth every single penny over the last few years. It is built like a freaking tank and just keeps on chugging along.
I take Trazodone. I sleep solidly and don't wake up groggy. I also sleep with a white noise machine called a Marpac Dohm sleep machine. I sleep like a baby. Good luck to you!
Custom molded earplugs are the bomb.
If the blacked out curtains don't work, due to light leaking in and such. I suggest buying a sleep mask. It'll take a few days to get use to, but i love wearing it now.
Some stores sell these little vials of ginseng. I'd add it to your tea or drink, but it'll also help you with energy levels.
lol not suggesting you buy 180, but you get the point.
This post was not meant to be 'blog spam'. I posted the link straight to the blog, and not to the flickr set because the rest of the blog has some amazing stuff on it as well. I found this incredible Japanese Baseball Card Book just because of this site's archives. I have no idea who writes this blog. I just like it is all... :)
