As already mentioned, magnesium citrate doesn't get absorbed by the body very well. If it gets into the colon, it acts as a laxative. This brand uses a different form of magnesium and has good reviews. You can even get it as a cream so your body absorbs it without worrying about it being in your digestive tract!
Look into magnesium rich foods as well. Dark chocolate and black beans are good ones! I get a really bad upset stomach/bloating with most magnesium supplements. I don't react if it's labeled as "magnesium (as aspartate)" but mostly I prefer to get it through food.
about five years ago i started using the app Period Tracker to track my irregular menstruation.
later on, i began half-heartedly/inconsistently tracking moods, physical symptoms, intercourse/orgasms, etc.
recently i looked back through the data & thought, "geez. every month that i have anything recorded, the phrase wish i were dead is popping up 3-5 days before my period. i might want to track this more consistently."
i don't do a great job with the app, so i looked over frequent symptoms i did track for the past year, typed 'em into a table in word, came up with a rating/color system (i wanted to track the severity of certain symptoms), & printed it out to use each month. so far so good!
> remind myself I'm not crazy totally and this will pass
i'm glad it works like this for you. it had the same effect for me. :)
Sure! I’ve tried A LOT and probably will continue to try stuff as it comes across my radar. But here’s what I take these days that I think helps me (or at least doesn’t hurt):
SUPPLEMENTS: 1) Buffered Vitamin C 500mg (Bluebonnet), 2) PMS Blend w/ B6 & other B-vitamins (Nature’s Way) 3) Vitamin D3 1,000 IU (Up&Up), 4) Magnesium 250mg
NUTRITION (I hate the term “diet” ugh): So I also have endometriosis, and likely will be diagnosed with lipedema in September (all disorders related to hormones, ugh, and all arose around the same freaking time ) Most of my choices are based on nutritional guidance for those conditions, specifically lipedema and endometriosis. It’s called the RAD diet. I have drastically reduced simple carbs, wheat, processed foods, dairy, added sugar and alcohol. I haven’t completely abstained from these things above mostly bc it doesn’t feel practical (or fun). But I have noticed a difference in my swelling issues when I follow this guidance closely. I’ve thought about moving exclusively to a plant based “diet” just to try it but that is a big adjustment I’m not ready for.
Every body is truly different so what works for me might not work the same for someone else. But anyway I hope this helps!
I have this product and I have only been taking one pill of the suggested two
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079KN9YKP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It works by regulating estrogen. Apparently many women have estrogen dominance, which is more likely in modern times because of phytoestrogens in the environment (like plastics and body care products, food etc).
It is important to prep with calcium d glucarate though so that the "bad" estrogens can be removed from your body rather than cycling around making you feel worse.
Once I get off work I can provide more links! The more I read about it the more sense it made. I have been waiting for another cycle or to to make sure it works and then make a post here. But so far I feel amazingly calm and normal!! Barely any pms symptoms and completely manageable! I'm not even sure I took Pamprin this last period.
This is what I use and 1/4tsp is about 21mg. I’ve been taking it for a year and a half. It has helped me but it’s different for everyone. This is the first month I wasn’t using it and there was a major difference.

Sure! Here’s some of the books that I found extremely helpful:
The Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden
This one was my absolute favorite bc the author is a naturopathic doctor. It’s great bc going to see a naturopathic doctor is extremely expensive so being able to get the same information in a book was very useful 👍🏽
The Happy Hormone Guide: Shannon Leparski
This book was a great beginners book, and really broke down all of the steps a person needs to take in order to balance their hormones. There’s also great recipes in this one
I am sorry to hear this but I completely understand. During the beginning of my diagnosis and sometime after i experienced such severe mood swings and out of control feelings. It does pass as I’m sure you know, reminding myself of that helps. Do definitely need to eat to keep your hormones in check but it truly matters what you eat. I’ve suffered from SIBO /Gi issues if there is anything I learned, it’s the food you eat will determine your moods/health. I highly suggest this book. It has helped me drastically. I have switched how I eat and think of food. Doctor tend to treat PMDD with birth control and or ssris. Birth control made everything worse. My SSRI helped out a lot and even more so after I read the book and changed my food. My SSRI also helps treat my ptsd, depression, and social anxiety.

Hi there! There are a lot of great apps for tracking your cycle. I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.popularapp.periodcalendar It helps me track my emotions and symptoms and write notes too. It has really helped knowing when i will feel good and horrible. I can actually plan things now that I know. Seeing a OBGYN can be so nerve racking! Take it in baby steps. I broke it down into small steps like this: 1.find a dr covered by my insurance. 2. Check out their about us page to see if I might like anyone there. 3. Get their phone number. 4. Call and make appointment. 5. Reward myself with a treat! 6. Write down all the questions i have. 7.go to appointment. 8.reward myself!! Keep your friends. They like you. You are wonderful and thoughtful!
I have this one (or one super similar -- same brand but mine is white/gray) https://www.amazon.com/Holmes-3-Speed-HEPA-Type-Purifier-Optional/dp/B01MQLIJ14/. It works really well.
Yep I’m still off it. I don’t think there’s any way I could go back on it..the side effects were awfuuul for me and I tried so many different kinds. I just started taking a supplement for balancing hormones and alleviating symptoms of PMS. Hoping it helps! It’s this one if you’re curious :-)

Thank you for letting me know! I just checked and it looks like the paperback is unavailable in Australia (I'm not sure why). But the ebook version is available.
I feel ya. This month was rough one and caffeine barely did anything for me. I was so irritable/low from not feeling my usual tidy workout loving self. Usually I can force myself to troop through with a good quality pre workout drink or 5 hr energy shot. Lol. Sigh. Best advice I give and try to follow myself these days is accept the low as your new norm... don't fight it. Work on coping skills with CBT, do Youtube meditations, take hot baths with aromatherapy or essential oils, read good books that redirect your negative thoughts and challenges your perspectives, (A Man's Search for Meaning... seriously changed my life, sticks with me to this day), walk in nature, play video games, listen to music and avoid toxic/irritating people. I found ashwagandha, fish oils, Sam-E and absorptive forms of B vitamins and magnesium super helpful (ask your pharmacist first to be sure whether or not it's known to interfere with antidepressants/medicines/illnesses). Oh... and last but not least, don't try to be perfect with diet, enjoy a few pre planned PMDD treats. Everything in moderation except the stuff you cannot moderate. ❤ (Edited because grammar. I suck at typing on my phone). Lol.
So, I started looking at different potassium supplements and found they come in 99mg tablets (even the Nature Made ones that say they're 450mg)... which I thought was downright stupid since the daily recommendation is 4700mg for an adult. Then I found this: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/potassium-supplement-oral-route-parenteral-route/description/drg-20070753 I didn't realize that a baked potato has nearly 900mg of potassium in it. Suddenly it made sense that potassium supplements are such low dosage; a lot of different foods have a good bit of potassium in them, and it's easy to end up with too much. Daily multivitamins only have like 2-4% of your recommended intake. Time to start editing what I eat to include a lot more potassium-rich foods!
It's a common fear. You aren't alone. Build a tool box of safety nets for yourself. For example, i have notes to myself explaining that this is just a thought or just a feeling and NOT me. My husband will remove all guns and lock them in the safe that i don't know the code to. There is also a CBT app that will help you go through your thoughts and feelings and help distance yourself from the and reframe them.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moodtools.cbtassistant.app[CBT thought diary](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moodtools.cbtassistant.app)
sure thing, i've been taking these guys: https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Calcium-Citrate-250-Tablets/dp/B0013OQJ66
so far i've just been taking the two-a-day at separate times recommended on the bottle (600 mg calcium total), because i'm sensitive to supplements and i eat at least a few servings of dairy a day, but the studies have used doses of 1000-1200 mg so you may want to see how things go for you and adjust up or down
I just looked for a generic Claritin, and found [this one with good reviews for a low price.](www.amazon.com/dp/B087Z6TKD9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_HFD8NKB10JKSEZD3E2EQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
I have taken one a day since I started ovulating, and I plan to stop once my period starts.
I was skeptical because it seems so random and unrelated, but I’m telling you, the migraines I got during PMDD were so crippling, it added so much more to my depression and anxiety. So just the fact that I haven’t had a single headache during this time is enough to convince me to do this every month, for sure.
I read some people tried a few different antihistamines before they found one that worked. I was lucky this one is doing the trick, and 300 tablets for $13 is insanely cheap in comparison to some others. I just saw 100 pack of Claritin for $49.
Although, the way it’s made this so much better this month, I’d probably pay that if I had to.
Good luck!!!
Don't quote me because I just started taking it, but I think it's doing something positive. The bottle says you have to take it for 8-12 weeks. I started taking it two weeks ago. I was able to talk myself out of a spiral one day so that's something at least.
You're not alone even though it feels like it sometimes.
Hello! Like you, and so many other women here, I have tried so many different methods to try to manage PMDD. Things like hormonal birth control, antidepressants, etc. never really helped and only made me feel crazier. Natural methods like herbs and supplements were helpful for a time, but it was such a strict regiment that I would always start to slack once my symptoms were lessened, only to have them come back full force when I stopped or reduced the use of herbs and such.
Then someone recommended this book to me:
It goes through why these symptoms exist and how to manage them. I have been using Dr. Lee's Progesterone cream for a few months now, using the timing and dosage suggested by his book. I will say, my periods are lighter, less painful, shorter, AND I'm not crazy! I *highly* recommend this book and the cream. Read the book, get his cream, tell me how it goes!
Keep in mind, it's not a magic pill and it won't fix it over night, but I would bet you'll see some improvements within the first cycle you use it.
Hey, I totally get it and I have the same issue. It sounds like you're doing a lot of the right stuff!
Have you tried oatmeal soap or an oatmeal bath thing? Oatmeal soap helps me, plus I love baths. But with itching I would take a cool to warm bath, not hot. I saw this oatmeal bath thing on Amazon but I've never tried it: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000UEAARO
I take 4 zyrtec a day (2 morning, 2 night) and that helps me with my progesterone issues as well as all my other allergies.
I often rub ice cubes on my skin when it's that bad, too. Or there's instant ice solutions like gebauer's instant ice, a topical refrigerant. I have bought it on Amazon https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000YA06NM/
It feels great.
Also aloe, maybe?
I would buy a pill splitter for the 10mg if they're tablets, they're very cheap, ex: https://www.amazon.com/Apex-Ultra-Pill-Cutter-Retracting/dp/B000EGKTGK/ref=sr\_1\_4?dchild=1&keywords=pill+splitter&qid=1615851535&sr=8-4
I've been using NOW Foods brand. I've always had good experiences with them in the past.
I've only been taking it for about 10 days or so - from ovulation on. I'm going to pause when my period starts and then see how my symptoms are from there. Ideally, I'd only like to take it on high estrogen days but I'll have to see.
Seriously, read it.
Fix Your Period: Six Weeks to Banish Bloating, Conquer Cramps, Manage Moodiness, and Ignite Lasting Hormone Balance https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062937324/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_53pbGbXETGFAY
This is the supplement I've been taking.
I originally tried increasing my zoloft after ovulation and that seemed to help the first month or two, but then it didn't. So I increased to 100mg everyday, steady and it seems to be way more level for me.
Hi! I have epilepsy so I could never go on an SSRI, but I looked into alternatives and started SAMe a few months ago. I tracked my mood and noticed that a week before hell started I went into massively depressive states where everything became overwhelming, I was sad and more emotional than I normally am. The SAMe has SIGNIFICANTLY improved my mood as a whole, but I noticed that my mood still is affected most a week before. I was taking 800mg in the morning, but now I started taking 1200mg the week before and it seems to get me back up to my normal self. I'm going to start doing this regularly, just increasing the dose the week before/week of. Definitely look into it for yourself and do the research before you start anything, but I was in a black hole of depression before I started this and I can't even tell you how much better I feel. I've also been doing the keto diet which seems to have helped as well. Let me know what you think. I get this brand on Amazon. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!
Something I’ve been meaning to post on here is about the supplement DIM or diindolylmethane and Calcium D-Glucarate. I was searching for sleep relief during hell week and I came across these two supplements. They work best together and help rid the body of extra estrogen mimicking substances also known as xenoestrogens. It’s hard to find information on if they mess up the effectiveness of birth control so make sure you’re aware of that before trying it. Even my doctor wasn’t sure if it would effect my birth control pill. Out of all the stuff I’ve tried and take I really feel that these two supplements have helped even out my mood during my cycle. I also just got taken off birth control pills and I’m taking progesterone from days 14 through 28 of my cycle. I haven’t completed my first cycle yet but so far I am on day 18 and I haven’t had any PMDD issues like I have in the past.
Side note- I got the supplements on Amazon from smoky mountain naturals. I was going to put a like to DIM but can’t find it for some reason. Here is a like to the Calcium.

Thank you for your reply! I think I'm coming to the same conclusion, not to fight, but to give in and embrace it. I feel so guilty pushing my family away, but at the same time, better to push them away than to lose my shit on them.
I will add "A Man's Search for Meaning" to my reading list.
I love my happy light. This is a light for Seasonal Affective Disorder but I find it helps me in general. When I feel rough I sit in front of it and it starts to help right away. At least one study has shown that light therapy is effective for PMDD!
I found this book to be pretty helpful. Hope it helps you. :)
The PMDD Phenomenon by Diana L. Dell http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B4QRIH2/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_-kdtvb05SJFHH
Also, I asked my doctor for an anti-anxiety medication for those sob/rage/freak outs and she ended up prescribing Lorazepam. That has been extremely helpful, even in just knowing that there's an option to help calm down if I really need it.
Herbs are tough! I take Vitex alone and it’s been hard for me to assess the efficacy. I also studied herbalism for a few years and found the practice to be severely lacking in scientific standards. Add to this that people can react differently to the same herb….
That said: I recommend this book- https://www.amazon.com/Botanical-Medicine-Womens-Health-Aviva/dp/070206193X/
She is an MD and herbalist who specializes in women’s health….and her info is great! I don’t own the book, but my library has it and it’s been helpful for me in the past. Actually on the waiting list to check it out again now that I’ve been diagnosed with PMDD….
Also, you may find this video (scroll thru book images to find the 13min video) of a Christian author who is a quadriplegic encouraging. Her other book “When God Weeps” had me sobbing all the way through it. I’ve never felt so understood with all my pain, doubts, and fears. Joni Eareckson Tada Book
I used to use Clue until I got lazy to record it separately, so then I just use Cara Care.

I honestly just read a self-help book about this relationship dynamic - https://www.amazon.com.au/Adult-Children-Emotionally-Immature-Parents/dp/1626251703?ref_=d6k_applink_bb_dls&dplnkId=5e850759-3d53-4d44-8fd8-cb110ba9c756
Highly recommend. Sorry you're not getting the love and support that you need during your tough times
You can get some cheap ovulation predictor test strips off of Amazon. It’s be the easiest way.
I buy this brand. It's glycinate though, never heard of bisglycinate.
I saw one on Amazon that said it was made smaller but I’m not sure if it works or not, I’ve never tried magnesium bisglycinate / glycinate before and was skeptical to buy it or not, but here is the small pill one, check out the second pic to see it’s smaller:
Yh been there. Then I read this book https://www.amazon.com/Women-Who-Love-Too-Much/dp/1416550216 Then I threw the whole dude away. Never felt better.
No srly tho, that's not how relationships work. You don't have to accept this behavior. This is not acceptable.
"we accept the love we think we deserve"
Hope you'll see the light soon :) 💙
Ditto the cup recommendation, especially if you're finding yourself bleeding through tampons. On my heaviest days I wear the larger size cup of the two I have, AND a pad, which has almost eliminated leaks on my underwear. It's SO MUCH better than tampons were. These are the ones I got, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BJKJNQN. It's really nice to have two sizes to use, and they're really a period game-changer IMO.
I started with calcium and magnesium and it sort of helped. I have to take it as soon as I ovulate or even a few days before.
As for the b6- I do 100mg daily in this and honestly it’s giving me my life back.
It’s this one from Amazon, my husband liked it too for his after workout treatments so I got one for him too.Tens
Amino Lean Pre-Workout on Amazon, No jitters. Just keeps your clear headed. I really recommend, also helps motivate you (to workout even which is never a bad thing). :)
I have heard that from others.
The one I take isn't citrate ..link is here
I’m sorry it’s so rough right now. 💕. here’s a book I found
In short, for many yes. Actually, a woman with PMDD wrote a book discussing it called - The Woman in the Basement: How to Live Your Best Life 75% of the Time https://www.amazon.com/Woman-Basement-Live-Your-Best/dp/B08D4H2W93
Also, I do it and it really helps me have a lot more mental control and not spiral.
Obviously, it may not be for everyone. But when you do have some energy you can look up the phrase "microdosing" in this sub and you'll find a lot of discussions.
Sending love.
I'm not on the pill, I was worried it might make it worse for me by messing with my already sensitive hormones.

Idk why I’m having a clear head with these. I’m taking two first thing and two the last thing of the day. I got up my usual time and went through my workday routine with my dog.
Having my bone broth in bed- Gonna walk my dog then go for a run because I am not curled up in a ball…
The bone broth has collagen and that’s what’s helping me bone aches…
I only tired the allergy meds because of this sub.
Kirkland copies the name brands and makes em better if needed then puts their name and label on them…
But costs less…
So there are other varying allergy meds- like I said I am only trying their because of this sub and I am clear headed enough to get stuff done and it’s seems it’s balancing symptoms…
A little nauseous but just a little.
I am not taking anything other than the 25 mg of the allergy meds I just started a few days ago , glucosil to manage my blood sugar and a hair skin and nails vitamin.

I could have written this. I have an inkling that women with PMDD are highly sensitive people (I haven't read the book yet but I plan on it). Yesterday I desired to punch someone in the face at chipotle for putting too much rice on my burrito. When I got home I wanted to throw the burrito at the wall. I ate and 30 minutes later I was fine. No rage. I think the truth is that our reproductive hormones are not reproductive hormones. In the sense that we call them that but they literally run so much. Think about it. Even if you don't want a baby and want to get rid of everything..you still need estrogen for your heart and bones. I believe having PMDD is indeed having an extremely sensitive response to our hormonal systems and that estrogen/testerone/progesterone play such a huge role its the thing that impacts us the most. If that makes sense. This is just me going on and on about my theories though..who knows.
I use a product similar to this one to organize my course assignments and whatever important scheduled events or appointments to work around.
Unfortunately, this brand is phasing out of business, and they are no longer in stock, but it has made a huge difference for me! Each row I dedicate to each class. And it's adhesive backed on the top and bottom so I can adhere it wherever I see it most.
Hope you find something that works for you!
Stick with your therapist and do all the self-care things, even if it feels like a luxury. Agree rest helps so much! After my dad died, I held it together (barely) and then two weeks later was hell week. It was awful. Lying prostrate, chugging Pepto and crying for hours. Also can identify with grief waves. Be gentle to yourself. Journaling helped me. And I read a book on grief that was an enormous help. On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss
Shop for a hanging heat lamp the same type people use to heat reptile tanks and pet houses. Mine is a Clamp Lamp Reflector Dome and Grill Silver 200W for Large Solar Lamps and it was €20 on Amazon. I bought a large infrared bulb from a local hardware store to fit and I can hang it from anything or from an easily inserted ceiling hook. You can buy cheap desk style infrared lamps too but I prefer to be lying down underneath it with headphones in for ultimate relaxation. I got a 2nd hand massage bed for €70 euro which is great but you could also just place a hook in the ceiling over your bed or couch instead. Here’s a link to the type of bulb I have - Infrared Heat Lamp Bulb, Ruby 250w. for Infra Red Heat Lamps for Poultry, Chicks, Dogs, Puppies, Cats, Kittens, Pigs, Reptiles and Other Animals. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09QS2BCBP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_F0AJ17G15SPRDV268QNX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Oof okay, that's not a great response from them. That's super annoying. There's always a normal level of gardnerella, but an elevated level means BV. It absolutely could one thing or could be a combo of hormonal stuff, dysfunction, and/or an infection. I'm going to kind of outline some stuff that helped me.
First and foremost: Antibiotics. Specifically vaginal metronidazole and/or clindamyacin (I ended up with a particularly resistant strain of bacteria, yay me). Eventually it got to the point that I had to do a 6mo course, but I was on an immunosuppresant medication and am already immunocompromised so it may not be as bad for you. Also, if you're currently sexually active your partner should receive a course of oral flagyll.
Second: Women's probiotics, taken every single day. I use the Garden of Life once daily womens as it has the best variety of lactobacillus I've found.
Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics for Women, Once Daily Women’s Probiotics 50 Billion CFU Guaranteed and Prebiotic Fiber, Shelf Stable One a Day Probiotic No Gluten Dairy or Soy, 30 Capsules https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00Y8MP4G6/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_GTJYQJVWBHE2NWKKG08W
Third: Boric acid suppositories. They work really well for some people, but not as well for others. I used Azo brand, but really any brand should work.
Fourth: Hygeine. No hot tubs, pools, baths with bath products. It sucks so bad because I love baths, but most bath products are SO bad for you. I've been able to integrate baths back into my life as long as I'm very careful about what products I use. Everything has to be PH balanced. Honestly, this goes for any soap or product that goes anywhere near your vagina. I can totally make a list of what I use if you want.
Fifth: Clothing and detergents. 97% or higher cotton underwear, try to avoid thongs and super tight pants. Avoid fabric softener. Use unscented detergent i.e. all free and clear. Wash your underwear separately.
Yes, worse as I get older. Lasts longer and the moods are more intense. 🤦🏽♀️I read once you hit perimenopause, if you’re prone to PMS, it gets worse for us. So, PMDD x 10. Shoot me. I now take Women’s Phase 2 and it does seem to help. But my PMDD varies in intensity each month, so I can’t tell yet if it’s the herbs or what. But the reviews are amazing with ppl swearing they can’t live without it, so it’s worth a try. My functional medicine dr recommended it.

Ive got wicked PMDD AND a herniated disk/a shitty back in general, and seriously this thing will change your life. tens machine I use it sends lil electric shocks into wherever you're sore (this doesn't work for like, wounds and deep body pain) and yeah that sounds super weird, but it works. It's like, you know when you knock your hand against something and you grab onto it and apply pressure? it's the same sorta thing as that. Your brain can't focus on too many stimuli at once, so instead of it feeling the back pain, itll feel like vibrations.
I use mine ALL the time, on my arms, feet, shoulders, legs, back, helps with period cramps too. Highly highly recommend

Hi! I used to live in the Seattle area and finding an in-person therapist was hell for me. I don’t have anyone in particular to recommend since I could not find anyone in-person in the three years I lived up there but I’ve found telehealth to be a life saver for me! Psychology.com is helpful to find mental health services for your particular needs. I hope someone can give you a better recommendation.
Good luck with the move! Be sure to get a happy light or something similar to help with the adjustment to lack of sunlight!

I can definitely relate. It's a hard thing to make peace with. We hold ourselves up to this unattainable standard that's not real. We want to be as perfect as we perceive the "perfect" people to be. I struggled many times feeling my man wasn't going to want me because I'm such a "mess" (and it makes it worse when I push him away or instigate a fight during hell week). But I think what makes things SO much better is self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, knowing we're human and every person has SOME bullshit mess inside to sort out. Even your boyfriend ;-). This is just the mess we were dealt.

Lifestyle changes, a dedicated self-care practice, keeping blood sugar in check, reading Sleep Smarter, getting food allergy tested, trying a low-histamine diet, and addressing any vitamin deficiencies may be a good place to put focus. <3

I have a blog on Psilocybin mushrooms and PMDD that might help answer some of your questions.
https://www.womaninthebasement.com/pmddblog-1/menstrual-mushrooms
I started out with microdosing and it definitely helped. After about a year of experimenting though I’ve found that higher doses is really what worked for me. I have a book out on my experiences with PMDD and mushrooms that detail more of a “mini dose”.
Yes, I feel this EXACT way. I'm also treated for depression and anxiety but it gets so much worse about 10 days before my period and then settles down when the blood comes. This is called PME. I am in the process of figuring it out too as I am already on an SSRI, birth control, and doing therapy, but the book I've been reading has said that a potential treatment option is increasing your SSRI dosage in the days before your period. I have an appt with my obgyn soon and will report back what we discussed!
I'm so sorry the people in your life that are supposed to be supportive are not. Just know you have support here and plenty of people that understand!
Back when I was in high school I had no idea what PMDD was but my parents were the same way, likening my depression, suicide ideations or angry outbursts to "it's just a phase or don't say things you don't mean." When my daughter grows up, I will never be this way and allow her to be open and honest about her feelings or mental health issues.
A few days after I had my daughter, I was extremely anxious and depressed and didn't want to live. I knew I was experiencing postpartum issues, but it took me time to learn that it wasn't because I'm not strong enough, it was because of my past experiences with depression/anxiety and the extreme hormonal shift. Can you ask your parents if they know anyone that this happened to, because it's the same thing hormonally and its super common!
Additionally, I would pick up the book Women's Moods and educate yourself as much as you can and leave it around the house so your family can see what you are reading and that you are trying to learn more about what is going on with you. Also, do they not know how a woman's monthly cycle and hormones work!?! I would hope so if they had a child!
The fact of the matter is, if you don't get treated, you will just get worse with age. It's important that you figure out what medication can help and get some therapy to help with the shifts in mood. If your parents don't acknowledge you are struggling and get you help, than they aren't doing their job as parents and you will for sure resent them when you get older.
I've had depressive episodes during my period on and off and also have had issues with depression and anxiety throughout my life but after being hit with postpartum depression, my PME has gotten so much worse. I would use this distinction for yourself (PME) as well, because you deal with depression normally but your menstrual cycle really exacerbates it.
First I would pick up the book Women's Moods, it really helped to validate that what is going with on me isn't my fault or because I'm not strong enough, its hormonal and it's in the brain.
And I also agree with the other commenter, talk to your obgyn or doctor. Just be honest about what is going on with you as it relates to the severity of your mood around your period, they will understand and help you figure out medications that could help.
Lastly, I would talk to your parents if you are comfortable. Your mom or other female family members might have experience with this as it can be genetic. Just be honest that you want to get help. If it would help and you think they would blow your suicidal ideations out of proportion or not believe you, show them the book or articles around PMDD, its a real disorder that should not be dismissed.
i take these guys https://www.amazon.com/Calcium-Citrate-Minerals-Tablets-Foods/dp/B009K72GVK/
so it's a total of 600 mg calcium, 300 mg magnesium, and 15 mg of zinc, in divided doses (so to get that total i take two tablets a day as directed on the bottle, one at breakfast and one at lunch)
some of the studies on calcium use doses of 1000-1200 mg a day (see e.g. this clinical guidelines review https://cdn.mdedge.com/files/s3fs-public/JFP06901e9.PDF) so if some is helping but you're not quite there yet you may want to consider upping your dose
not to get too graphic but an imbalance between calcium and magnesium might result in either loose stools (too much magnesium) or constipation (too much calcium)
>already taking a multivitamin (rainbow light)
Look at the supplement facts on the back of the bottle. Multivitamins usually have iron, magnesium, b-complex and zinc. Most multivitamins don't have omega3 (unless specified). I recommend adding omega3s during PMS (I take 2 of these a day https://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-Essentials-Vegan-Omega-3-Softgels/dp/B00E99YKAY )
I've found that different people need different amounts of iron, magnesium, etc. It probably depends on your diet. This is something to talk to a doctor about, research for yourself and experiment with. Be careful though, some supplements can lead to stomach upset (such as zinc)
A friend of mine swears by lithium orotate for anxiety and racing thoughts. She had it recommended to her by another female friend who also had great success. I’m planning on giving it a try. I don’t know if that’s exactly what you are looking for, but here is the amazon link

Hey lovely sending my love ! Have you got any pain in your shoulders and neck too ? My pain tends to pop up there as well. There is this cream you may like to try from amazon, it works really well from my experience. The pain does feel related to PMDD as I’m always finding symptoms are worse for me during hell time. I think the main help is doing everything in my power to not cause inflammation. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Strength-Soothing-Cannabis-Extracts-Shoulders/dp/B07D2G2FHK
Hey, etrain828! I have read in "The PMDD Phenomenon" that sensitivity to progesterone is specifically one of the reasons why some people with PMDD cannot take the birth control pill to alleviate symptoms. Everybody's different, and so of course some people with PMDD do respond well to the pill! But there are many (like myself) who have tried to go on the pill to reduce symptoms only to find (horrifyingly) that it made us feel like we were having PMDD every single day, rather than "just" 1-2 weeks before the start of a period. It appears to depend on what type (sensitivity-wise) of PMDD a person has.
Try methylated B vitamins. I suggest this a lot on this group because it really helps me! Super B-Complex – Methylated Sustained Release B Complex & Vitamin C, Folate & Methylcobalamin, Vegan, 60 Small Tablets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01787EPEE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_MVKPPV4B0G0CVQQE2X70 these are the ones I take. If you look at the research, in some studies they have shown even better results than SSRIs. I hope this helps. I've been in some really dark places because of this disorder. Nothing lasts forever, relief will come soon.
I have had awful intrusive thoughts as well relating to trauma in my life and this book really helped me to understand everyone has thoughts like this, it's how you continue thinking about them that is the issue. It helped me reduce my anxiety around my thoughts and move on.
Yw! I highly recommend the b supplement in combo. For that, it took about 10 days to feel a difference. I just found the most excellent complex with the 100mg of B6 here.
P.S. in the link below - this stuff is great if you can get some before you go. They also sell it in individual packages on amazon, or you could find it at a grocery store/health food place. Magnesium in this form on the go for me has been a lifesaver during PMDD week. I just pour it in a water bottle. 2 teaspoons. They have it in different flavaz too. 👇

I get pimples around my hairline and one evil hormonal cystic acne breakout either on my chin or my cheek in the two weeks before my period. I use the turmeric stick overnight (but with an old pillowcase cos it’ll stain) and it usually makes things go away in one night but sometimes two. On amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cocokind-Turmeric/dp/B074G5NPBS
Company site with more info: https://www.cocokind.com/products/turmeric-spot-treatment
I sometimes use the turmeric stick with the mask. I use this whole line and it’s really reduced redness and dryness overall. I’ve been using it since January.
This sounds exactly like my life a few years ago...yes, I can relate and was my experience. Things started to shift once I became totally transparent with my partner about what was going on and educated him about my cycle. Now, he has the week before my period blocked out in big red highlights on his calendar, so he knows what to expect and so that he can support me by encouraging me to take it slow, or doing small things for me to make me feel more chill. It’s definitely been a game changer. It doesn’t necessarily help my crazy thoughts or depression, but it helps to shift the context. I made another post about this recently, but this book was super helpful for me - it has changed the way I relate to my cycle completely:
https://www.amazon.ca/Wild-Power-Discover-Menstrual-Feminine/dp/1781807582
The app called 'meditation' in the app store with the watercolour logo is really awesome. It lets you pick types of sessions and times. So 7, 24 and 21 minutes. Can be good for a quick break or pause if you don't have time for a fuller session.
Bottom line though is when it's bad I should t be around people. I need to back off and calm down. Might take all day but the. I need to be alone for as long as possible. Showers also help oddly.
When I was trying birth control the issue I ran into was that all of the eczema got really bad pretty fast. The reason I figured out was because I'm allergic to cow dairy. Eczema dermatitis is one of the lesser known dairy allergy symptoms. I've tried several different medications (For PMDD and other issues) and get the same set of reactions that I get when with dairy and it gets really bad within a couple of weeks. All birth control to my knowledge contains dairy in some format. It's used as a binder in a lot of medications. For information about dairy allergy see: "Go Dairy Free" https://www.amazon.com/dp/1944648917/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_C9UBFbMAQC7T7
Birth control is helping so I suggest finding a different one. There are lots of generics and a lot of the time they are easily interchangable, but there are occassions where the minor differences between them matter. I suggest trying a different generic (call around to the different pharmacies and ask what they have) or a similar birth control to what you're on right now. I have hope that you'll find something that will help pmdd and not make the dermatitis awful.
This sounds terrible, I'm so sorry for your struggle! I've dealt with more acne this year from wearing masks all the time. Have you tried pimple stickers? They have really helped me through quarantine. These are the ones I use. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014SAB948/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_3bcyFbMHA641V
calcium plus d I would take three in the morning or do two am, two pm. Didn’t feel much of a difference either way.
COVID has made anxiety emerge as my biggest demon. I was doing meditation daily and taking magnesium, but ultimately had to turn to an SSRI for help. I take Zoloft and for the 2 weeks before my period.
My hope is that once COVID ends, I can go back to my old remedies without medication. But the medication has helped silence the anxiety. When my anxiety is at its worst, natural supplements don't make a dent.
Vitafusion makes a fun little magnesium gummy. (Side warning, magnesium citrate can make you poop more regularly.)

I am taking 2 daily (I have a deficiency, but through my research, so do a lot of others. It’s terribly missed).
And as for the B6, they recommend 50-100mg post ovulation. I am taking 100mg a day, I do not recommend this for anyone else, as again I have a clinically diagnosed b vitamin deficiency.

Tomorrow should be the day. Tomorrow is the day I crash mentally usually.
I’m taking the above daily. Adding 1200mg of calcium post o only.
So far so good.

Progesterone Cream (Bioidentical) 4oz Pump of 2000mg USP Bio-Identical Progesterone. Paraben-Free, Soy-Free & Non-GMO. May Support PCOS, Menopause, TTC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EB0AQA4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_L4wWEb5G2FA5K
I think progesterone creams can actually be bought at the store but I’m not sure where unfortunately. :/ I noticed a huge difference within the first few days. It’s definitely not immediate, but it’s pretty quick. It’s a pump dispenser, you can apply to abdomen or forearms- I put it on my lower abdomen once in the morning and once at night. I feel you. I was a huge wreck yesterday and remembered just how much I hate feeling this way and that it’s just not something I can reason and logic my way through. Big huge hugs!!! I truly hope it helps!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sleekbit.ovuview&hl=en
This is OvuView, but it's only for Android users. Although it's theme is ovulation, I have tried every period app and I will never use another after using this. It is completely customisable, you can turn off the ovulation tracking if you want, and create ANY type of symptom you want to record, and it will track whatever you want. It will begin to predict your period based on default conditions and then adapt after learning your average length. There is also a note writing feature, and 3 viewing modes for either the calendar, the circle of time left showing your anticipated period, or the graph which visually presents all your symptoms together so you can watch where they worsen or improve in a pattern. You can also set alarms or reminders, and track medication.
It has helped me! :)
Head it off by a few days if possible. I found that if I didn't get ahead of it, the exercise didn't really help as much. So if you know your PMDD symptoms start 14 days (2 weeks) ahead of your period, I'd give it four solid workouts in a row on days 11-14, and then switch to every-other-day for the two weeks leading to your period.
For me, a 45 min run on a treadmill was best/easiest. The elliptical machine wasn't intense enough for me. Once, I was out of town and resorted to this crazy workout by Denise Austin called Sculpt & Burn Body Blitz and somehow, that single workout managed to stave off my entire PMDD episode that month! I really put my heart and soul into it though. It will seriously kick your butt. haha
Beware: One year around Thanksgiving, a friend of mine convinced me to just do walking with her instead of running, and I was suicidally depressed that entire break. When I say intense aerobic exercise, I'm serious about the intense part. :)
