> Does anyone know what trips the Pittnet internet
Nothing. There's no automated system in place. And Pitt does not actively monitor everything looking for piracy.
That said, if Pitt receives a DMCA notice, they are legally obligated to act on that or they risk legal action. Same as with your home ISP.
There's a fine and a warning for the first offense. Further offenses can lead to expulsion.
Pittnet (wired and wireless) uses 802.1x authentication. Everything you do can be traced back to your Pitt username (and on that note, don't share your username and password. You're on the hook for anything they do with your account)
If you're adamant about hoisting the Jolly Roger on campus, or anywhere for that matter, either stick to private trackers, or pay for a VPN service that doesn't keep logs, like Private Internet Access
Apparently, they eventually stopped evacuating buildings when bomb threats were called in.
I've seen people doing it outside of towers. As long as its not weed I don't see why it's different from smoking cigarettes. There is also a hookah bar at Bates and Atwood:
Sphinx Cafe Egyptian Hookah Bar & Coffee House 401 Atwood Street Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (412) 621-1153
There are so many ways to conceal your identity over the internet (using public wifi hotspots, using the tor network, using proxy servers with an encrypted tunnel, or any combination of those) that emailing is probably the best way to leave a bomb threat, now that security is being ramped up all over campus.
Agreed with /u/jnapp18. Pitt doesn't give a shit if you use a VPN, but if you're going to use one, DON'T USE HOLA!
I personally use Private Internet Access. It's ~$40/year, and it has a lot of nice features. You can select where your traffic will look like it's coming from, it has iOS/Android apps, so you can use it with Netflix on your phone/tablet, it doesn't log your traffic, it's encrypted, and it doesn't block any services, so VOIP & P2P2 programs will still work.
Number 9, Number 9... I made it with just bomb threats this time.

If you pick any given school day between March 14th and today there is a 46% chance there was at least one bomb threat.
Furthermore, there is a 15% chance that there were 2 on that day.
I had this problem earlier in the year. The key Pitt provides is for the student edition which is for some reason not included on any of the Windows 8 or 10 disks. The best thing to do, speaking from experience, is to download the Windows 7 ISO (all versions) and input the Windows 7 Ultimate Key from Pitt into it and activate. From there I would upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Let me know if you have any questions.
Link to the Windows 7 ISO (official, which I didn't use, but should still work): https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7
I have a really small locked safe for cash and important documents. It can certainly fit in the desk drawers and is really discrete. Even if you trust your roommate, it's comforting to know that all of the important stuff is safe. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-5900D-Personal-Gunmetal/dp/B005K6JQXQ/ref=sr\_1\_5?dchild=1&keywords=small+lock+safe&qid=1627304082&sr=8-5
Plenty of people torrent on campus wifi, Pitt doesn't particularly care UNLESS they receive a DMCA complaint. If they receive a DMCA complaint, you will get in trouble/fined.
That said, if you're going to do any kind of torrenting on campus anyway, at least use a VPN service like Private Internet Access. A year's worth of VPN service is cheaper than the fine you'll receive from the school for a single DMCA complaint.
If you want good resources for books:
Abebooks sells international editions of textbooks, which are virtually identical to the American versions. The only difference is they have cheaper paper.
Libgen.org has a ton of free ebooks
Nope, as a general rule if you're only downloading things (like Youtube mp3s or game roms for emulators), then there's no way for Pitt to see/care about what you're doing.
As a side note for anyone reading this, if you don't want to worry about anything you're doing on PittNet I recommend Private Internet Access. $40 a year is worth it to me for being able to download/upload anything, especially if you split the 5 computer limit between 1/2 friends.
the "Stop the Pitt bomb threats" blog has the count at 45, based on the community-editied documentation there. i'd go with that number.

The concentrations you're talking about are here: https://cs.pitt.edu/undergrads/concentrations . These are just suggestions. I just want to make sure you understand that you don't have to stick to just one your entire time at Pitt. They're just basic guidelines if you're interested in one area or two areas to know which classes would be good to take. But to be honest, take the classes that interest you the most and it won't matter. If you don't take all the classes under Data Science or all of the ones in AI, that doesn't mean you can't become an engineer for either.
Also, the online courses can be found at www.coursera.com and https://www.udacity.com/nanodegree . Udacity is a great service, it has nanodegrees and courses while coursera just has courses. There are plenty of other resources online but they're not quite the same as taking an actual class. Regardless, learning outside of the classroom is still fun and worth it.
Really? I'm doing a Software Development AS at CCAC right now and my choices for the courses I need this semester are this guy (http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=467623), who has reviews pretty universally stating he doesn't respond to email in an online course, or this asshole (http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=687254) who I have personally spoken to and told me "I send out an outline and assignments to my students, and they email me back their code. If they need further help then usually their book is more than sufficient." Given this is how Moore handles online courses and also given that many of the 200 level courses are only offered online in CS, how is that worse than being actually taught by a grad student? What he's talking about isn't teaching, it's collecting a paycheck.
Here is a few simple steps to torrent safely.
Set your torrent program to encrypt all data and to only connect to users who also use encryption.
Set your torrent program to randomize which port you torrent through.
Use a program such as iPredator (found here [https://www.ipredator.se/]). Its roughly $20 for three months of their service but it will leave you safe from both Pitt, the internet provider whoever it is (comcast, verizon, etc.). Well worth the $20 when you consider the money you save by torrenting.
have fun!
I'm a CS major and I have this Lenovo Flex laptop. It's worked perfectly for me and it also is a 2-in-1 so you don't have to buy a separate tablet if you're interested in handwriting notes digitally. It was $700 when I bought it but now it is only $600. I assume there's probably a newer model now.
Currently taking it now. There's two essays, 7-10 pages a piece and a final. The professor doesn't use courseweb so if you want the prompts and other class info you have to go to class. Lectures are ok for clarification on what you read, but if don't read you'll be completely lost. The dialogues we discussed were Euthyphro, Meno, Phaedo, and Nicomachean Ethics so far. Your papers are graded by your TA. My TA also gave out weekly reading quizzes but I'm not sure if every TA does. Hope this helps.
Assuming your talking about the ones from sunday night/monday morning, we had threats at 8:30 am sunday and then 4 am monday which is about 19 hours. This has been from 3pm yesterday (or 6pm if you count the starbucks threat that was likely not the same person as the emailer) until now which is just under 24 hours.
Before you could actually SMS message google to do a search. But they just killed it :(
http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/12/google-kills-sms-search/
Honestly though if you want to find something and ask me, I'm happy to pull out my phone and search it for you (albeit with a death grip on my phone)
Just searching Airbnb I found this which would run you a 1000 a month and you'd need to take the bus to campus, but that's free as a student. I don't know what your budget is, maybe posting that would help.
If you are just taking the econ class for the Social Science general education prerequisite may I suggest you take Game Theory Principles with John Duffy. I cannot speak for the teacher, but that class was super easy. Also, the book for that class is super cheap used, or you could buy mine if it's the same book still.
Alternatively, you can buy the access code as a stand alone for 50 bucks on some website. However, having to spend 50 dollars to do the course required homework is complete bullshit in my opinion, but the choice is yours.
I can confirm that it is available and that the redemption code works (at least for me). For those of you who are bothered by not having the time remaining visible without clicking the battery icon, MiniBatteryLogger is a nice app that I just installed that places an icon with time remaining in the menu bar.
To answer the question asked in the title (but not really in the post itself): You can kill an RFID chip wirelessly. They're radio ICs so you can fry them with a strong enough EM field. Here is one example of how to do it.
This would 'physically' destroy the chip though...
(But ya Pitt maintains a database which determines what cards are active.)
You could look into getting a prepaid Orange sim card! I believe i got mine off of Amazon, but that was just for a 3-week trip (and it cut off exactly on the 21st day haha) so I would take a look into their options and see if they have what you need for a longer-term service! Overall though I had no issues getting it set up quickly and easily after 10 hours of travel and while using it in multiple countries. There may be other brands that are better suited to your needs, but I recommend Orange in particular as I believe they are one of the top brands in France/Europe!
Number 11:

10 Bomb threats in 15 weekdays.
3 Days with 2 bomb threats.
4 in the last 24 hours.
I'm not in Pittsburgh otherwise I would totally offer, but if you want to do something yourself, for my HS graduation Pitt sent us cap topper things (link to one I found online here) and I basically took rhinestones (like these) and glued them onto it to add a little bit of jazz to the cap! It took a bit of time but not too much artistic talent so that could be an option!
It seems unlikely to me that we'd be able to succeed in getting them removed, even with a petition; I'm sure they have some sort of multi-year contract with the university that has yet to expire.
I feel like the best thing to do is to simply avoid eating there if you don't support their views. Honestly, I think their stance (and their subsequent PR debacle) will have caused enough students to lose their appetite for Chick-fil-a that they will feel the financial impact of their stance on LGBT rights this year, petition or no.
Do you just need the ISOs? Microsoft makes them available for free, but you need a key (make sure it's a key for a clean install, not an upgrade)

I buy from friends if I have to. They're usually generous and give me good deals, and I give them good deals on my old books. Other than that, I buy international edition books on abebooks. They have identical content on slightly shittier paper and cost 80-90% less than the editions you buy in the US. I mean I once got a $250 textbook for $20 since it was an edition meant to be sold in India. It's also completely legal.
Malwarebytes is bad at protection: https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/ It's just more code running on your device acting as a potential attack vector. The build in Microsoft AV has gotten a lot better, and is all you need. If a threat gets past that it will get past almost all of them.
Because English is a classic liberal arts major and as such should involve critical thinking, while communications is one of those pseudo-preprofessional majors people do mostly because they're easy. In my view, which is likely representative, communications is "English lite."
Also, take a look at this old /r/dataisbeautiful post:

https://plot.ly/~etpinard/330/us-college-majors-average-iq-of-students-by-gender-ratio/
Only tangentially related but everyone should just buy these and keep them in their medicine cabinet, they're super cheap and individually packaged so you can just hand them out to all your friends: https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Home-Pregnancy-Urine-Strips/dp/B00DOJWJ3U
✨My friend✨ also keeps a pack of these amazon tests in her bathroom for anyone who may need it and doesn't want to go to a store.
Hell, you can even by window locks on amazon for dirt cheap if your landlord is lazy enough to not repair the latches themselves.
Crazy easy to put on, slightly more aesthetically pleasing than a 2x4
This is just a theory, but I'm pretty sure every Pitt ID has a miniature RFID tag inside it that the bus scanners use to ID you as a student. Therefore, if you get one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/125KHZ-Reader-Writer-Duplicator-Control/dp/B079HVQXQY
maybe you could copy your card into another card?
> ZERO percent chance you get caught
That's pretty dramatic. What if you run into the pittnet office naked, dancing, and singing about how much you torrent, waving around your laptop with Mullvad open and your pitt username painted on your chest?
If you're looking for some easy introduction, "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" and "The Coffeehouse Investor" are good starts. These are more investment related than stock trading related, but it's good stuff to be aware of if you're getting into that game.
Most desktop cases should come for a mount for something called a Kensington lock, which would not only protect your computer but keep it locked tight as well. If you haven't bought your case yet, be on the lookout for said mount. It isn't much, but it will keep people honest.
That being said theft was never really a problem for me in the pitt dorms, and especially around the engineers (if what you mean by "forbes engineering" is that you're going to be living amongst fellow engineers in their dorm), who should be way too busy for any pranks or shenanigans (good luck).
