Aww man, I just noticed I linked to the /r/MMORPG link instead of the article. Sorry for making you click twice! I'm an idiot. Here's the direct link: http://www.mmorpg.com/secret-world-legends/interviews/roman-amiel-on-making-secret-world-legends-better-than-the-original-1000011652
Interview is worth your time though, haha.
Not to be "that guy," but- how can you rate something that is consistently in the high levels of user satisfaction? I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but some of the complaints lodged were really out of left field.

Yes you should. Its cheap, no sub, and has literally the best solo/story/missions of any MMO ever created. Cutscenes, voice acted, LONG, challenging, etc.
There is a reason this "unknown" game is so highly rated http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/all/sCol/rankHype/sOrder/desc
There is still enough people playing to do dungeons and stuff but you will spend quite a bit of time just exploring and playing the game itself that population wont matter for a while.
Looks like Agartha is the super hub: "Agartha has been redesigned to be even more of a central hub to the game. You will be able to meet with hundreds of other players and group up before going on your journey."
Ok so I am on mobile, so sorry if anything is wonky, but I love the Martial Artist outfit and it deserves a deck to match.
WEAPONS: chaos/blade (488 AP) ACTIVES 1. Escalation (Chaos->Chance, 1 AP) 2. Reality Fracture (Chaos->The Fourth Wall, 27 AP) 3. Chop Shop (Blade->Wind through Grass, 16 AP) 4. Chaotic Pull (Chaos->Shell Game, 12 AP) 5. Illusion (Chaos->Chance, 2 AP) 6. Uneven Ground (Chaos->Shell Game, 21 AP) 7. The Art of War (Elite, Blade->The Cutting Artist, 50 AP)
PASSIVES 1. Inevitability (Chaos->Building Blocks, 12 AP) 2. Intensity (Chaos->Chance, 1 AP) 3. Agitator (Green->Turbulence, 12 AP) 4. Master of Illusions (Chaos->Chance, 3 AP) 5. Turbulence (Chaos->The Fourth Wall, 21 AP) 6. Brandishing Support (Blade->Running of the Jagged, 12 AP) 7. Probability (Elite, Chaos->Chance, 7 AP)
So, evade deck became untouchable hurricane. Ideally, pack a rocket launcher to get up in enemies' faces off the bat. Idea is to get their attention and keep them in your AOEs.
I liked rephy's idea of Steel Palace. If you do that, swap chop shop, illusion, and master of illusion for steel palace, bloodsport, and smoke and mirrors.
Probability keeps the AP cost lower. I opted for a blade elite because, while I love Domino Effect, it has been a bit wonky since they changed it. Art of War will impair multiple targets and also gives you a few glances.
More HP will significantly reduce your damage output. It's all in the build, if you're having trouble then something is wrong with your build. I've solo'd everything up to the end of Egypt with ~2000hp.
IMO your problem is the Chaos weapon, I don't really think it's good for anything other than tanking. I use Blade/Chaos for tanking, and Blade/Ele for Solo and Dungeon dps.
(Stunning Swirl is acceptable instead of The Art of War, and it's what I use in my dungeon build)
You also won't need Forged in Fire for a while, should be able to grab it part way through Blue Mountain. Flight of Daggers is a good swap for it in a dungeon build. Also the last 2 passives are up for grabs, I really couldn't think of anything to go in there.
Lovecraft's stuff is generally pretty short, so your best bet is to get a compilation of his stories. I recommend the Penguin Classics series if you're after a complete set.
These are the ones that are most similar to TSW (off the top of my head):
Dagon
The Call of Cthulu
The Shadow over Innsmouth
The Color Out of Space
Nyarlathotep
The Festival
There are most certainly others but I've read so many of his stories that I get them all confused and have trouble remembering which is which.
Not sure if you’re still checking this or not. But since no one really addressed your problems, I’ll explain it to you. Based on your previous comments, you laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L505-S5984. You can look up the specs of your laptop here: http://www.cnet.com/products/toshiba-satellite-l505-s5984/specs/.
Here’s minimum specs to run TSW: Processor: 2.6 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory: At least 2GB RAM for Windows XP / 3GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 8800 series 512 VRAM or better
These are the specs for your laptop: CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz
Graphics Processor: Intel GMA 4500MHD
Memory: 3 GB DDR3
So, no you don’t meet the minimum specs to run this game, your CPU isn’t powerful enough and you have an integrated GPU which is far below the minimum spec. Basically, you’re running on a toaster and considering how the market price of your laptop is $7.50, a toaster is probably more expensive. There’s no way you can run TSW at a playable rate on your laptop and no amount of software fixes is going to allow you to do so. You’re basically trying to run a PS3 game on a PS2, and the PC is going to allow you to do it because you forced it to.
TL-DR: You tried playing a game that is 4x the market value of your laptop. Your laptop is a toaster, it can’t run the game. You wasted 15 hours playing with system files because you didn’t understand this. Its unfortunate the Funcom installer didn’t warn you that you didn’t meet the minimums specs.
You got massively downvoted because the problem is fairly obvious and you came off as a dick by insulting everyone here.
"MMORPG: Why the shy away from the MMO term to “Shared World RPG”? Is the game still an MMO where you play with thousands of others at once, or is it more “solo” and closed off a la Destiny?
RA: We think one of the strengths of The Secret World was its story and settings.
As a Shared World RPG, we have reduced the maximum amount of players that can enter a playfield. While adventuring, you will still meet a few strangers here and there, but the focus is on you, and your friends if you choose. You are following your character's story, your experience won't be affected by hundreds of other players nearby trying to kill the same monster.
Agartha has been redesigned to be even more of a central hub to the game. You will be able to meet with hundreds of other players and group up before going on your journey."
There's a AR/blood deck that's build for healing. It's billed as an Illuminati deck, but that just means that faction gets an outfit for completing it, there's no reason why anyone couldn't use it...
As for books, I cannot recommend Delta Green: Denied to the Enemy hard enough for anyone who enjoys The Secret World's themes, or Lovecraftian themes in general - especially if you blend them with all the best elements of a classic spy thriller. It's actually based on a campaign setting for Call of Cthulhu (the tabletop RPG) and I'm pretty sure the book used to come included, but it's a quality stand-alone story in it's own right.
I believe you can snag it on Amazon for a fair price right now.
Chaos/Blade isn't so great a combination early in the game, but it is EXTREMELY powerful for soloing later in the game. The problem is that the abilities you need are spread out all over the place.
For example:
WEAPONS: blade/chaos (905 AP)
ACTIVES
Discord Rising (Chaos->The Value of x, 34 AP)
Karma (Chaos->The Fourth Wall, 16 AP)
Blade Torrent (Blade->Technique, 1 AP)
Clearing the Path (Blade->Crossing River's Edge, 27 AP)
Martial Discipline (Blade->Technique, 2 AP)
Turn the Tables (Green->Survivalism, 16 AP)
The Art of War (Elite, Blade->The Cutting Artist, 50 AP)
PASSIVES
Shoot 'Em Up (Assault Rifle->Bombardment, 21 AP)

12 Gouge (Shotgun->Crackdown, 12 AP)
Sudden Return (Blade->Crossing River's Edge, 12 AP)
Riposte (Blade->Running of the Jagged, 21 AP)
Leeching Frenzy (Assault Rifle->Ground Control, 34 AP)
From the Abyss (Elite, Chaos->The Value of x, 50 AP)

This build is, so far as I've seen, unmatched for solo AOE farming and quite capable single-target. When I'm signet farming with this build, I'm earning 2 AP per pull from the sheer number of dudes on me. However, it costs 905 AP to get the full setup.
Earlier on in the game, I think blade/fist would probably serve you better, as Blade has the majority of the "mmm, so good" beats and fists HoTs can help out survivability a ton.
>MMORPG: Why the shy away from the MMO term to “Shared World RPG”? Is the game still an MMO where you play with thousands of others at once, or is it more “solo” and closed off a la Destiny?

From what I gather, this means they can tailor the game for a better single-player experience with the option to bring along your friends. Still too early to tell what exactly this will mean though. But I think they are just creating hard population caps of zones before creating a new instance.
I think this was meant to be be a response to me. For what it's worth, TSW sits atop MMORPG's game list when sorted by rating/hype, which is pretty nice.
Did this work? If not, try disabling your firewall and antivirus. If you have an IP masker going then for sure disable that, Hotspot Shield prevented mine from working initially. Stokestix, telling someone asking for help to go to Google is beyond useless and a sure way to keep our community from growing.
Unfortunately, this. Add in something simple like Gross Anatomy and even arterial pulse (if'n you want), and you'll cut through things like butter. Yeah, i didn't even bother putting in an aux. Diamond grit probably.
Seriously, it's just this simple. You can probably drop art pulse and go with lick your wounds for another heal. This build is even okay for dealing with nightmares, depending on your glyphing and such.
WEAPONS: blade/hammer (1126 AP) ACTIVES 1. Bamboo Cutter (Blade->Crossing River's Edge, 9 AP) 2. Razor Shards (Hammer->Hammer Pit, 9 AP) 3. Clearing the Path (Blade->Crossing River's Edge, 27 AP) 4. I use something like this for my generic farming build. If it is huge pulls I'll swap Helter Skelter and Chaotic Pull for defensive cool downs.
WEAPONS: blade/chaos (1307 AP) ACTIVES 1. Blade Torrent (Blade->Technique, 1 AP) 2. Clearing the Path (Blade->Crossing River's Edge, 27 AP) 3. Karma (Chaos->The Fourth Wall, 16 AP) 4. It could be, a lot of things in Secret World are references to something or other (Twin Peaks, Stephen King, Lovecraft, etc.). I honestly don't know if it is.
The only thing that came to mind was Sun Tzu's The Art of War.
You could try The Art of War on the arcadia server. http://theartofwar.guildlaunch.com/ Our cabal website ^_^
Plenty of experienced players and some new folks too. Great crowd with a vent server as well.
It seems TSW is being marketted quite a bit with Nvidia's new 660Ti:
"The GTX 660 should perform about twice as well as the 460, and a significant notch above the 550 as well. It's also probably about the lowest price point on the GTX series that will run current games, like The Secret World, at a full 60 fps with all of Nvidia's graphical treatments turned on, like PhysX and TXAA." - Gizmodo
Hopefully this does drive sales a up a bit too.
Encoding settings: x264, quality balance: 10, max bit rate: 1000 & buffer size: 0
Something you could try, that may or may not work, and I can't check right now because I don't have the game installed (hard drive issues), is a tool called Process Explorer (link goes to a microsoft.com site, in case you're worried!).
Basically download the zip, extract it somewhere, and once you have the game itself running at home (past the patcher) run procexp.exe. When it opens and the list fills up, hit the space bar to pause it, and then find the game process in the list that pops up. Again, I sadly can't be any help here, but you can probably work it out from the icon if need be. Once you find it, right click the process and select "Properties", and you should get a window with a bunch of info, one line of which should hopefully be "Command Line". It's probably something like "C:\Somewhere\Something.exe" and possibly with some things after it like /server 1.2.3.4 or -server 1.2.3.4 (or maybe not, just groping around blindly here) but if you copy that whole line, you should be able to run it directly from the run dialog on the start menu. You may have to edit the part in quotes to point to where the exe is located on your work computer though.
It's possible none of this will help, or the patcher could pass a session key to the launcher that changes every time you log in, making you have to run the patcher to connect; if so I apologize, I would have checked myself but I won't be able to download the game again for a while. If you get stuck anywhere let me know, but don't paste anything here on reddit because the command line could contain account info in the worst case. Best of luck to you!
Well anything remotely related to botting is a bad idea...this really shouldn't have to be said, and to be fair, I did address it at the beginning of the article. The only thing with a repeat option is for banking, and maybe during golem events, but even then I'm sitting behind the keyboard thanks to having to adjust position either by playing the hokey-pokey with the golem, or having to move because the golem moved. So, in such an example where what your doing has no variation what-so-ever, yes, I will use a repeat option for that, but I am still behind the keyboard, and paying attention to what is going on. Again...the only exception to this is PvP for obvious reasons.
I am not using macros to bot...I'm using them to handle repetitive tasks, or to make certain functions a lot easier.../reloadui being an obvious one. It's easier to hit one button, and handle lag, than it is to type out the same line a half dozen or so times during play. Also what of TSW Hotkey Assistant? Can that be used...it's a third party program I know, but all it does is hit a key over and over again as long as it is physically being pressed down.

Yea, I just clicked on the site you provided and got the same thing. This is what I get https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/errorhandler?hsimp=yhse-001&hspart=CND&type=A0964AAFF42994B9F9CF_s_g_e&q=https://register.thesecretworld.com/account
Sorry, I was late spotting this one. The sale is already over. But on the bright side, it is summer sale time. If you're looking for a deal, check the link below once a day:

Edit June 9: TSW IS NOW ON SALE FOR $15 THROUGH ORIGIN.
As the gamertube video linked at the bottom of that article fails a lot, mmorpg are now hosting their own version here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/404/view/videos/play/2084/NYCC-11-Panel.html
damn yeah that is some scary shit. just scrambled to find my eso login info from a few months ago, but all good and active still lmao.
will be paying a lot more attention to which websites sell keys.. I always kept looking for the cheapest price but need to check their sources and rep for sure.
i have multiple orders with these guys https://www.trustpilot.com/review/instant-gaming.com
I am using a blade and rifle build with some Fists passive skills:
Actives:
Razer wire (barely use this skill, probably should find one better)
Forking Paths (builder, get head from afflicted target)
Anima Burst (damage and heal rifle builder, usually used to kite mini boss)
Three Round Burst (Rifle consumer, burst)
Martial Discipline (defence and heal with passive)
Clearing the Path (blade consumer, also penetrate afflicted targets)
The Art of War (blade elite skill)
Passives:
Bloodsport (make target afflicted when hit)
Sharp blades (in create blade damage by 10%)
Flight of Daggers (passive elite, adds close range damage)
Regeneration (make Martial Discipline also do heal over time)
Immortal Spirit (heal over time when penetrate)
Lick Your Wounds (hit target gives heal over time)
Healing sparks (when activate a burst ability give defensive target heal of time)
Doing okay with this build. Lack any CC skills though, basically out last enemy with lot of heal over time.
When soloing trash mobs I use skills that improve blade damage.
When doing boss fight usually has to rely on rifle to kite and switch build to improve rifle damage.
Mind you I haven't played in almost a year, but my hammer/sword build utilizes glancing/blocked attacks and self healing very effective with multiple targets.
Blade Torrent, Surging blades, Crimson Theatre, Blowout, The Art of War, Stonewalled, Martial Discipline.
Shadow Play, Resilient Defender, Perseverance, Blindside, Riposte, Breakdown, Sixth Sense.
I usually go with Death from Above and Rocket Science for mobility. (I have the purple signet mod for no damage when I rocket jump too)
My alternate loadout is incision, lethality, iron maiden, breakdown, perseverance, regeneration, fluid defense. Blade torrent, surging blades, chaotic pull, karma, clearing the path, martial discipline, stunning swirl.
I generally play healer or tank...so i end up having a self heal tank that does some damage :)
This is the cookie cutter template I tend to build from. 99.9% of my farming/missions are done in groups. The general farming method is me dropping HoTs on group members, they run around and face pull everything in the area. The HoTs pull everything to me (I slot agitator most times) and DPS AoE's down. DPS runs builds focusing on AoE damage.
WEAPONS: blade/fist (777 AP) ACTIVES 1. Forking Paths (Blade->The Cutting Artist, 9 AP) 2. Clearing the Path (Blade->Crossing River's Edge, 27 AP) 3. Empty 4. Empty 5. Surgical Steel (Fist->Warming Up, 9 AP) 6. Cauterise (Fist->Warming Up, 16 AP) 7. The Art of War (Elite, Blade->The Cutting Artist, 50 AP)
PASSIVES 1. Immortal Spirit (Blade->Technique, 1 AP) 2. Bloodsport (Fist->The Outback, 16 AP) 3. Circulation (Blood->Possession, 34 AP) 4. Breakdown (Chaos->The Value of x, 9 AP) 5. Empty 6. Empty 7. Empowerment (Elite, Fist->Heat of Battle, 50 AP)

If those three builds work for you, then yes, that will be good. I really think that it depends a lot on your gear and you yourself as a person what builds you need. Really, pretty much everything can be viable and can be successfully used in almost any situation. You should be comfortable with your build and preferably also like the weapons used.
As I said, by the end you will max out the wheel and have all abilities - then you can truly go crazy with builds.
Chaos is definitely good for Solo builds and can be used for both AoE and Single target. I used ranged in the beginning when I first played, but I find that for Soloing melee builds are best. You still need ranged if you want to DPS in dungeons though, since it's usually best to stay away from bosses there.
You don't really have to be afraid of being a noob in dungeons. People that run the normals and Elites are usually "noobs". It becomes a bit more elitist when you hit Nightmares, but the community isn't the worst here, and usually there are groups offering Beginner Nightmares for people new to them. I would really recommend you run them, as they give you good gear, Pax, and XP.
I'm gonna post my Solo builds to maybe give you an idea of where to go if there are difficulties. Also, try to run with 2 Healing talismans instead of one. Your damage output should still be alright.
Edit:
Chaos/Sword Solo (for general use)
Actives: Forking Paths, Run Rampant, Clearing the Path, Four Horsemen, Trial by Swords, Illusion, The Art of War, Diamond Grit (Chainsaw)
Passives: Breakdown, 12 Gauge, Circulation, Immortal Spirit, Blood Sport, Healing Sparks, Flight of Daggers, Revved Up (Chainsaw)
The Art of War change makes it useless in NM. I know it sounds silly, but the 15 second CD increase puts the timing off for impairing bosses. The inner ring impairs will replace it.
When I tank I only run ~450 hit. I generally don't have glancing problems.
Tank : (Sword/Chaos) Passive [Master of Illusion, Shadow Play, Intensity, Agitator, Fuel to the Fire, Turbulence, Prodigal] Active [Escalation, Surging Blades, Crimson Theatre, Karma, Trial by Sword, The Art of War, Illusion]
Talismans - 5 Health pieces, all with full evade glyphs. 1 attack piece (minor) with penetration glyph, 1 attack piece (minor) with hit glyph.
Wear about 9k health, with the health raid flask (7 pure water 1 at the top, 2 rows of 3 below it) you'll have about 10k health.

Basic SW book, explorer edition is like 10$, as paperback, so isnt even expensive, to get a feel for the system.
Horror Companion is a bit more, but then, very much worth it.
