Don't worry too much about him, you'll get a very one sided comment from him on every post in this sub which will include some variation on the phrase "99% of zones are 100% dead" - check their post history, it's just funny by this point.
In answer to your question though: AO normally has sales for Christmas, Halloween and the Anniversary. Check the http://www.anarchy-online.com/news feed for previous dates. Expect mid December for the next sale/offers.
Playing Anarchy Online. Was my first MMO experience and I had about 1 year off work. I played that game every day solidly, and got to know many people in the game. The game is really complex and there were moments when I played it that are extremely awesome.
You start off level 1 with a very slow run / walk speed and no means of transportation. The level cap is 220. By around level 60 or so you can start looking at getting a yalm, which is basically your own personal space ship. Looks like this : http://www.anarchy-online.com/anarchy/frontend/files/CONTENT/download/media/wallpaper/yalmgrey/yalm_grey_1600x1200.jpg
The shops sell random yalms with individual stats. So you need to be quick or they're gone, it took me days just to find the yalm, but the first time I got it - was FRIGGING AMAZING.
Up until that point the whole areas I had visited were from the ground. Flying around seeing the areas from the air were amazing, and it was really quick. Suddenly I could go further, and do more, and make more credits and generally be more useful to my org mates. I just loved it.
Best moment in my gaming history - getting an ao yalm legitimately. Some players beg for credits or when people leave the game they give away credits, but I worked for my yalm, and so really appreciated it when I got it.
"Metaphysicist" is funnier because it has more science in it and because it's also the name of a class in a very obscure MMORPG that nobody plays anymore. Which is a shame because it was a really neat little MMORPG.
Anarchy Online should run on a toaster. It has a free to play option. It's not modern day though, it's futuristic. Despite its age, AO has one of the coolest designs. The music and atmosphere is some of the best I've experienced in a MMO to this day.
Anarchy Online.
Not entirely on the money for what you asked but this is still the best MMO I've ever played and I compare everything to this (everything falls short). I don't play anymore just because I don't really have the time to put in that I used to.
I'd still recommend playing it. I've been rolling a few new toons recently to gank people in ToTW/Foremans and those areas have been pretty busy.
It's also free to play, OP! /r/anarchyonline
http://www.anarchy-online.com/ (also on steam)
No bonus per se for returning players but they have membership rewards for the days you paid subscription for. These are also for the days in the past that you did pay and not only for new payments. http://www.anarchy-online.com/membership-rewards
The original game + notum wars expansion is free to play. Why not just make an account and jump right in. That's the best way to experience the game.
I can tell you right now though, it's going to be a tough start and most people quit before level 30. The learning curve is steep and the economy is pretty much fucked.
You're best bet is to try to find a good org that will help you along the way and give the opportunity to meet people and have fun.
If you decide to play the game, our sidebar has a lot of information to help you. Check out some of the websites and old posts if you get stuck.
Planeshift's not worth the bother. I remember playing an early release in 2002- it's scarcely moved on at all since. Don't waste your time.
As far as free MMOs go? Anarchy Online is still going, and it works fine with Wine for Mac and Linux compatibility (I think).
Star Trek Online's free- but, again, you'll have to faff around with Wine.
Hell. If you can work with Wine, you're pretty much set for MMOs.
Anarchy Online. It's old, low system requirements, really fun, large, fun and awesome community. Major update scheduled. http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&template=main
Funcom also did Anarchy Online back in the day, which is some hard sci-fi stuff, with a few Dune vibes - never played due to it being a MMOrpg but always liked the setting.
I looked at the email they sent which links here: http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&template=content&func_id=2781&table=CONTENT
It shows image from inside the game as it appears now. The noob area, ICC and something else, I haven't a clue.
Interesting you should bring this up now as they apparently just released a giant patch for it. http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&template=content&func_id=2781&table=CONTENT
Anarchy Online, Age of Conan and The Secret World, and some smaller "casual" online games. As a technical project manager for the client-server game engine, graphics engine, and tools for content production and distribution.
On the testlive page it states that you need to have a subscription.
"Anyone with an Anarchy Online subscription can play on this test server. There are, however, some important things to be aware of when using it"
I'm not sure if a froob account is considered a subscription (I assume it would) but I suggest you scope out the official forums (as /u/DmanBR suggested) and see if you can dig up any additional information.
Also, Yalmaha.
Anarchy Online was the first game I played, that allowed me to fly. I loved that game.
Try downloading Anarchy Online. Its mainly free to play, sort of dying, unique, and still fun for when you are bored.
Anarchy Online is the closest I could think of. It's a GREAT game set in the future, it's pretty realistic and an mmorpg. It has a bunch of different classes (soldier, doctor, engineer, fixer, metaphysicist, etc.) I actually am going to start playing it again because now I'm all hyped up about it. It has a bit of a learning curve, but it's a great game to jump into. There are expansions that you can buy (and pay monthly once you buy them) which adds a bunch of stuff including two new classes. You totally don't need them though, so you can download the free small client version on their website here.
This is missing Anarchy Online One of my favorite games in the whole world.. been free to play for years. Devs are slowly upgrading the whole game to the same engine as Age of Conan too.
