Biking in the rain isn't too bad if you have the right rain gear (a fender, rainboots, rain pants, and a raincoat). I'm not sure why your ass is getting wet considering you should be sitting down while biking, but for your other problem, there are some cheap backpack raincoats on amazon such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Frelaxy-Waterproof-Backpack-Traveling-Activities/dp/B07D8RWW7Q/ref=sr_1_1?crid=13DW9QN079JJL&dchild=1&keywords=backpack+raincoat&qid=1575171029&sprefix=backpack+raincoat%2Caps%2C215&sr=8-1
This link states that "Halal Cart Chicken and Rice" contains ~900 calories so your guess is fairly accurate. Delicious but also awful for you!
A few things to consider:
There are currently quite a few fires in Northern California http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents
My guess is that the winds are bringing all that smoke down here. Check this out to see the current wind speeds and directions: https://www.windy.com/?38.483,-121.640,5
op, i suggest you look into extra safety measures you can take to protect yourself (and any roommates) like this door lock/jammer and some window locks

This is a good option. Basically you want a good U lock for the frame and a cable for your wheels. Kryptonite is one of the best bike lock manufacturers.

Like C++98. I'm not even kidding, at least for Sean Davis. C++11 is hardly mentioned.
C++ Primer was the textbook that my class used
EDIT: BTW WARNING if you're taking ECS 40 in the Fall, you'll likely be learning Rust, NOT C++. Hao Chen teaches Rust
I'm the guy on the red bike right there! :D I've been waiting for them to update this for over a year now.
Responsible Peace Officers say no. They know that the free vehicle comes with a yearly maintenance cost for upkeep and that assets you don't train with don't get used. They are contentious about how they spend the public monies used to support their departments and allocate their limited resources toward tools and training that will best benefit the public and their officers.
Law Enforcement Officials say yes.
The difference between Peace Officers and Law Enforcement Officials is vast, but there are VERY few things that Peace Officers can't accomplish that Law Enforcement Officials do. It is all about mindset.

If you buy "cheap", chances are that you're either buying something that's built to be a temporary toy or buying stolen (thus increasing demand for stolen bikes). What you need to do is ask, "Where can I get the cheapest price for an unstolen bike that will last me four years?"
The ASUCD Bike Barn's Aggie Bike Buy option is an incredibly good deal that few bike shops can match. https://asucd-bikebuy.ucdavis.edu/product-category/bikes/ The guy who runs the shop (Robert) is ultra-sensitive about the cost of bikes but since he and his team has to fix the bikes, he's always looking for the best value. An 8-speed Biria ($475) will be enough bike for most riders. Coupled with their 4-year unlimited labor plan ($175), you will have a bike that will work well for 4 years. (Just make sure to put the plan to use! If something doesn't feel or sound right, take your bike in for a check-up!)
But you also have to keep that bike secure, so you NEED to purchase at LEAST one great lock and at LEAST an supplemental cable. My favorite setup is the Kryptonite Evo4 standard size U-lock and cable. https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-2079-Evolution-Bicycle-KryptoFlex/dp/B06XZT8KZ1/ It comes with an anti-theft guarantee of $1,500 (as long as you register the lock, use it correctly, and file a police report if the bike is stolen)!
That's probably more money than you want to spend, right? $475+$175+$60 = $710 (plus tax). But that will get you:
A non-stolen bike you want to ride, will be rideable for 4+ years, and that will likely not be stolen (if you actually use the lock correctly). If you purchase a "cheap bike" (Walmart, Target, Costco, Big5, etc.), you'd be lucky if it lasts the year. And if your bike doesn't work, then you've just wasted your money.
If you go to myucdavis and look up the books for each class like normal, it normally says required or not somewhere on that page. It's not always accurate though. You can just download the books from like libgen.is or something unless you need like an access code with it. That way if it's not required, you're not wasting money. And if it is required and you prefer hardcover, you can go buy that
If it's required they might not be as lenient as if it were just recommended. I had already finished my GE, gen chem, gen bio, calculus, and some of ochem and physics by that point. Also, not to be negative or attack your personal ability or anything, but if you're doing badly in 1B I would recommend looking into doing something else. Chem only gets harder, and it would save you lots of stress and heartache in the future. Also, don't count on the UC Davis professors to be better at teaching, they are pretty terrible in general. This was my ochem professor last quarter, the average on one of the tests was 51%.
You may have a traditional Schrader Valve (like a car tire) or a thin Presta valve like modern race bikes.
Make sure you have the right pump, or an adapter. Also, the short (6 inch ?) hand pumps are very hard to use. I like floor pumps (like Bugs Bunny TNT box lol). There are foot pumps too. You may want a pump with a guage so you know how much pressure you have.
This one seems OK, but you don't need to spend that much https://www.amazon.com/TOOLITIN-Bicycle-Pressure-Compatible-Schrader/dp/B087TCWCPX/ref=sr\_1\_5?dchild=1&keywords=bike+pump&qid=1625674898&s=gift-cards&sr=1-5
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bike+pump&i=gift-cards&ref=nb\_sb\_noss\_2
Based on what you said, I decided to prioritize weight over power when searching. Here's my number one suggestion with a good deal slapped on it:
The processor is 7th generation (8th just came out, always buy 1 generation older to save money). You get gen 10 nVidia graphics, a relatively beefy SSD, backlit keyboard (a must for dorm gaming), all in a 4-pound package.
Price with digital coupon: $934. Spend your leftover money on an external blu-ray drive, 2 TB external storage, a good mouse, and some good headphones and you're golden.
I agree completely. Next Wednesday the high gets down to 84 and hopefully it's not humid, but it feels better than the 110's we'll see later in the year. I checked the temperatures from last year and it seems a little more consistently hot this year so far.

Computer Science. Simply because of ECS 40 and 60 with Sean Davis there isn't a single class I know besides these classes that require a good 20-30+ hours a week just to not even submit the homework. The majority of the class cannot even do the last two programs. I spent more time on ECS 40 and 60 than my housemates (Chem E, EE) spent on any of their classes. Seriously those two classes are enough to make this major the hardest shit.
http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=35125
But yeah I'd have to say it's between ChemE, EE, CS based on my own experience with friends/housemates.
Idk about Biomedical. They basically take easier versions of ChemE and EE courses.
Here you go!

Will take some finagling to get it to work (don't test in class! I did it and almost had a heart attack).
Its Sprint with unlimited data so I'm cool with that. Its android so I changed my password with gmail. I'm attempting to wipe data remotely with http://www.androidlost.com but I think the phone is out of batteries. I geolocated it with Plan B around 1 AM last night, which is usually about the time that my phone dies on a typical day. I'm hoping whoever took it plugs it in over the next day or so. I don't think knocking on doors will be much help either. I think that the GPS is pretty accurate, as Plan B sends out 5 geolocations, 4 of which gave the same address, which makes me think the phone is stationary there.
What's your major now? I'm going to write as if you're a total newbie to all things programming, perhaps thinking of transferring from a Bio/Chem or Social Science program, and assume you've been booting Windows/OSX your whole life, though if you have CS or GNU/Linux experience please don't be offended.
As you perhaps know, you need the MAT 21 series for CS. If there are many more big holes like that, then you may have a serious problem graduating as even a 5th year in the College of Engineering (keep in mind that engineering degrees average around 180 units in-major alone).
As for proficiency in programming, it's all passion and commitment. If you earnestly enjoy programming, and put effort into your own success, then you'll probably find it a bit easier than you might suspect. If you're a total newbie, experimenting in python might be a good place to begin before committing yourself to CS. Another useful (but committal) step would be to work from a (free!) GNU/Linux operating system (might I suggest Linux Mint?). Especially important will be learning to work in Bash (the most common Linux command line interface; CS majors at Davis are required to at least know the fundamental elements of Bash syntax).

I live in West Village as well (central Ramble) and we don’t have any full length mirrors.
I highly suggest Amazon, Target (dorm essentials line), or UCD Facebook Marketplace!
I'd recommend getting this cable for ethernet, it's fairly cheap and it works just fine. Like the other person said, you'll probably have to get an adapter or a hub if you have a macbook that doesn't have an ethernet port. Just look for usb-c/thunderbolt to ethernet adapters or thunderbolt hubs with an ethernet port. Also, apple does sell an adapter but there are cheaper options.
$100 is waaayyyy too much for a "decent" router. You can get reliable gigabit routers on Amazon for less than $60
You'll still be leaving one of your tires vulnerable. If you don't have an extension cable, I recommend removing one of your tires whenever you park and locking them both together along with the frame like this. If you want to save the hassle, you can get a cable off amazon for $6.50 here which I highly recommend.
Get a water proof bag, here is a cheap one on Amazon.

Basically we had a reading for almost every lecture, so theoretically we had to read the textbook after every lecture. Sometimes, the 3-point lecture quizzes included questions about the readings, but a lot of time time, they didn’t. The exams did have some questions about the reading, though, and how many of those questions are based on the reading varied by student—our exams were a random selection of questions from a large question bank. I believe you won’t be getting the same professor I had for CMN 3V if you’re taking the class in the fall, so you may want to take this info with a grain of salt. Also, if you’re using the same textbook we did, you can rent the ebook version on Amazon for less than $9 (which is really cheap!): https://www.amazon.com/Business-Professional-Communication-Kory-Floyd-ebook/dp/B07NPSZ6NX.
Also, if you have a decent bike, don't cheap out on the u-lock. Bolt cutters can still cut through most cheaper u-locks. I use one of these. Someone tried to cut through my lock a few months ago while I was on campus. I found shards of metal(from the bolt cutters) embedded in the rubber protective coating on the lock, but no damage done to the actual lock itself.
Splitters dont work! I found that out and we fixed it by buying a network switch instead and connecting it to the port, now we all have wired connection here!
I love that first source but it seems to be less about "land that is used for grazing cannot be converted to grow anything but grass due to how bad the soil quality is" and more about better Ag practices all together. Specifically, the reduction in tillage methods and increasing certain no-till techniques (which are awesome and I highly recommend this book if you're interested in more. Though, there's an assumption baked into some no-till arguments that we have to 'eat the animals' that help promote soil health that I won't go into here, but just know, it's there. ) Ag in general needs a rehaul, for sure. Our current food system is way too fossil fuel intensive.
The second source also focuses on Crop land but doesn't state whether those crops are used for Animal Feed or Human food. Check out this map. In the US more sq miles of land are used for livestock feed than human food. What if all those miles were used for human foods with sustainable ag practices like low to no pesticide use, no-till, etc? That would be killer. I completely agree with the premise of the source - we definitely need an ag revolution - but I don't think it supports your argument.
Normal as in an everyday occurrence? No.
Normal as in once in a while we get a day or two of lots of wind? Yes.
This weather forecast is pretty useful if you want to get advance notice of upcoming wind, rain, temperature extremes, etc.
Yes. Connections through ExpressVPN will show up as NAT Type 2 (moderate). If you need Type 1, it might not be possible unless you find a vpn service assigns a direct non-shared public ip (which is inefficient/costly from a vpn service deployment perspective)
Looking at the specs of your laptop you could probably trade it for something like a surface pro. You could try posting on FB marketplace or offerup, maybe try to sell it and use that money to buy a new laptop. You just wouldn't really be able to game on your new one, though I was able to run OW on the lowest settings at 30 fps on my surface pro 7. You could ask around some electronic stores to see if they do trade-ins if you want something brand new.
Surface pro 7 is only 1200, 900 on sale when I got it and the MacBook Air from the student store on campus is 900. You should be able to sell your laptop for at least 900-1200 I think, it sounds like your laptop must have been in the 1.6-2k range brand new. It's of course not ideal and I would hesitate as well, but if you want to game you're better off with a desktop anyways.

Alternatively there are small stands you can get where it's just a small square with fans in it. Those fans are quiet and would help keep your laptop cool which might help your fans not run as high or at all. Something like this:
(I'm not saying to get this exact one but something of this nature could help you, though it won't fix your battery problem)
You said your laptop stays in the 158-200+ range of temps which is not good. Prolonged and frequent running at these temps will dramatically reduce the lifetime of your device, so I would suggest either selling and getting a new one or investing in something like what I linked above to get the temps under control.
so just to clarify i would need to buy the router itself such as this one (https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNET-GL-MT300N-V2-Repeater-300Mbps-Performance/dp/B073TSK26W) and then also buy a VPN service such as ExpressVPN correct?
Better safe than sorry, but simply hiding it is probably enough. You don't need vault level security. Just don't be the one who leaves their door wide open when you go off to class.
It's more important to make sure you have a password set, find my device on, etc.
If you want secure storage, something like this might be a better purchase than a Kensington lock.
Thanks for posting this! I have the same issue, a 2018 Mac Air, so it doesn’t have any normal USB slots that most computer locks work with. Obviously using a USB to USB-c connector won’t work, but I found this on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Kensington-MacBook-Locking-Station-K64453WW/dp/B01MTBQUX2/ref=pd_lpo_2?pd_rd_i=B01MTBQUX2&psc=1
Granted, I have not purchased it, but it seems like it should work.
Myabe you could suggest a schedule where you all have one full hour alone in the room each day. Hopefully, you can check all your schedules, and maybe there will be a time each day when the other 2 are in classes, but if not, you can ask that you all have scheduled time alone, or maybe for at least 30-45 mins. You can also think about a bed curtain like this https://www.amazon.com/Curtains-Breathable-Dustproof-Blackout-Underbed/dp/B09ZTTYHT3/ref=sr\_1\_7?crid=OGH6IXEQGUTR&keywords=bed+curtain&qid=1662006961&sprefix=bed+curtain%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-7
There are actually a ton of headphone options for electric guitar these days. The cheapest of which (which I'd recommend for a beginner, since a setup can range anywhere from $60 to $1000+) is the Blackstar Amplug Fly I have used this thing and it sounds pretty darn good considering what it is. It definitely sounds better than my first actual amplifier I owned as a beginner guitarist.
During the rainning season, definately a mudflapper if you live off campus and still ride bike to school. However, I don't think a 50 dollars one is a good option cuz they are kinda expensive. A 15 dollar single plastive board would be enough, like this one. Or, actually you can make one with water bottles.
What do you mean by Athletics pennant vs a normal one?
The pennant I have up at work, and the only really modern one that I've seen from UCD stores or elsewhere, has the CA logo and a script "Davis" on it. Technically those are marks of the Athletics Dept, but UC Davis branding is in a bit of a weird place right now and there isn't much more in the way of an "official" school logo pennant at the moment. Plus a lot of school spirit and branding is always centered around Athletics for big public schools, so there's not as much of a divide as you might be thinking.
The one I'm talking about is basically this one, though I don't think I got mine off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/College-Flags-Banners-Co-Pennant/dp/B07L21S18X/ref=sr\_1\_5?keywords=uc+davis+pennant&qid=1651442691&sr=8-5
Some dorms have poor Wi-Fi because 1) they might be older 2) the technicians don't understand how Wi-Fi works and maybe put the router in a compromising location.
In any case, those aren't solutions. What you can do is to get a TP-Link Wi-Fi Adapter for like $10 on Amazon. It's essentially a USB-A add-on that acts as a receiver for Wi-Fi. If you have USB-C ports only (cough MacBook ppl) then get a USB-C to USB-A adapter and plug it in.
Another solution is to do your work in the library. There are routers everywhere and you'll get a good connection (unless you're wedged between the Italian bookshelves on the 4th floor).
If that doesn't work for you, there is a solution but it's tacky and a bit selfish. You can find the closest router to you and surround it with some metal bowls so that it faces concave out to your laptop or workstation. The Wi-Fi signals will be focused on you. Though your dormmates will be absolutely livid because you've stolen their Wi-Fi.
I recommend solutions #1 and #2.

Notion is my favorite note-taking app. I've searched for the best note-taking app for years. I've used Evernote, Apple Notes, Microsoft Onenote, Wunderlist, Google Notes, Dropbox Paper, and Things 3. >I would think a big screen is the better along with 64MB of Ram and the latest processor, say an I9
Sounds like overkill.
For school work the minimum specs you'd need are something like:
For mechanical engineering you'll want a Windows laptop for sure.
You probably don't need a GPU, though it can be nice to have if you play games and stuff. Keep in mind mobile GPUs are gimped versions of desktop GPUs and can throttle themselves due to the heat generated. GPUs are also really expensive right now, I'm not sure if this is affecting the gaming laptop market or not.
Screen size is personal preference. Resolution and aspect ratio are more important IMO. A 13" 1080p screen is probably going to feel cramped but a 4k 13" probably won't. You can also buy yourself an external monitor to use in your room or a portable monitor if you want something smaller. If you go the portable monitor route I recommend getting a tablet stand to use with it.

It always seems like a better idea to take a lighter load for the first quarter to get use to the system and area. I'm transferring to sac state this fall so I don't know how long you get to drop a class but you could do that too. Most companies just hand out online code challenges; some even make them available online e.g. https://www.hackerrank.com/jobs/search.
Assuming you can pass the online challenge, you should be invited to a technical phone interview. I wouldn't worry too much about not having the right major - my friend at Davis majored in history and now works as a software engineer, and he had no problem getting interviews.
I don't think MOOCs will help, unless it's something hyperspecific e.g. self-driving car company + Udacity's self-driving car MOOC.
Another suggestion: Post in the Davis CS Club. Ask their opinion. Some people might chime in, offering to give you practice interviews or even refer you to their company.

You could buy a super super cheap soldering iron online or you could get a moderately cheap one and save yourself a LOT of frustration. Trust me. Get the moderately cheap one. Weller is a good brand.
Only thing I would add is a small portable Bluetooth keyboard for when you really want to type stuff. I have one similar to this
There are armbands that you can buy that hold your phone in place while running. I usually take off whatever key I need the most from my key chain (car/house key) and tuck it into the armband. Example
I live in Sacramento so this might not be helpful, but I look for local bike paths or walking paths around me. Those are usually the go-to places for joggers/runners in my experience.
As for socially acceptable times to run, I don't think anyone is going to judge you for running at a specific time of day, it's totally based on personal preference. Go when you feel like you'll be most comfortable! I personally sweat super easily, so I try to aim for early morning when it's nice and cool outside.
I'd look at this if I was in the market for a new lock.

This is what I got. Very solid build (Aluminum housing) and compatible with garmin mount. It is also easily detachable so you can take it with you without unmounting the whole thing. It is on a bit of pricier side but worth every penny. I have used many cheaper alternatives and I can tell you almost every single of them broke shortly (Mounting point damaged, battery dead, and so on)

Bought these. Washed clothes masks. Removed lint with tape. Applied bands. Massively improved my quality of life. I carry them with me to hand out to fellow 4-eyes.
You can just get one of those backpack rain covers ( https://www.amazon.com/ZM-SPORTS-Upgraded-Waterproof-Backpack-Adjustable/dp/B07H2CG3X8 ) for waterproofing. They're really helpful if you're going to be biking in the rain.
“ One of the best ways to know is to measure the concentration of CO2 in each room or part of a building, he says, because it shows the amount of exhaled air that has built up in the room without enough fresh air to flush it out. C02 levels should register no more than 800 parts per million. “If you see [a place with] levels much above 800 ppm, don't spend much time in there,” Newell advises. But that measurement requires specific technology. Ideally, Newell would like everyone to carry a CO2 meter in their pockets, but those instruments can cost upwards of $100. ” https://www.amazon.com/Quality-9999ppm-Digital-Temperature-Humidity/dp/B01966BZDY/ref=sr_1_3
These are some really good pants that I got. Hope your size is in stock. I haven't heard any recs about bp cuffs. As for stethoscopes, Littman is a really good investment, solid quality, and basically the standard in the health profession field.
My instructor always said buy once, cry once. It may look pricey, but as an EMT, you and your equipment will be going through a lot.

Does this one has solutions to the exercises as well? "Look inside" on amazon only shows exercises.
Aggie Studios did a video in 2018 about the CoHo Chicken Tetrazzini Recipe and there looks like there was a cookbook published in 1986 with a bunch of recipes ($$$, can be found on Amazon and a few other sites).
Your best bet would be student employees taking photos of the recipes, as it doesn't look like there's been an official sharing of recipes in quite a while. Would definitely be interested in seeing some of those bakery recipes myself! I spent many hours baking in there and definitely had some favorites. Unfortunately I didn't get photos of them though :(
If you are in a 1BR or studio, only one ethernet port on the wall will be active. If you want to connect multiple things to ethernet, you'll need to split the line with a network switch.
Here's the one one I used: amazon
I just caught you have single-pane windows. You might want to look into getting a reflective film that blocks the sun and heat.

I used PIA (). It had a "dns leak protection" feature, but I never confirmed it was working. I recently unsubbed, so I'll definitely have to give ExpressVPN a try.
You're going into it way more informed on ways to protect yourself than I was, so you'll be good. Besides the Colleges (and the dorms), I'm not aware of any other apartment complexes that have internet access through the school, so you should be safe from at least the school's wrath pretty much anywhere you move after Adobe.
Anyway, have fun at Davis!
From another socal person:
Waterproof jacket WITH A HOOD is really useful, and waterproof shoes (not necessarly rainboots! I'm talking more like hiking shoes) are VERY helpful.
Also, some sort of backpack cover, or a waterproof backpack is really helpful (you'll get tired of trash bags eventually if you're active. I personally use one of https://www.amazon.com/Gemeer-Backpack-Security-Transparent-Reinforced/dp/B07GCBJF7H/ref=sr_1_41?ie=UTF8&qid=1542926272&sr=8-41&keywords=clear+backpack
This sort, because at the time I could not afford a totally waterproof backpack, and wanted something more sturdy than a cover.

Okay, so in your response you said "it's illogical to compare a GPA from all lower division classes to a GPA from all upper division classes" and then a few sentences later you said "UC Davis courses are curved to at least a B-, with A's being given to over 25% of students in these classes (both upper and lower division courses)". You contradict yourself by saying lower div GPAs are incomparable to upper divs but later claim that the GPA distributions are the same for upper and lower division classes-- what were you saying about logic again?
Let's take a look at the student profile for admitted transfer students for 2017-- the 25th percentile CC GPA was 3.29 and the 75th percentile CC GPA was 3.78. There's no easy way to get the average GPA across all majors at UC Davis, so let's look at the average GPAs for the top 10 majors: Psychology (3.106), Managerial Economics (3.102), Econ (3.042), NPB (3.215), Biological Sciences (not provided for some reason), Human Development (3.101), Communication (3.078), CS (3.215), Animal Science (3.021), and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.133). Those are still pretty high, but the average of all of those (not including the unprovided Bio Sciences GPA) comes out to 3.1125.
I realize percentile isn't directly equatable to averages, but it's fair to say the average CC GPA of an admitted transfer student would lie somewhere in the middle of that 25th-75th percentile range (3.29 - 3.78).
I'm by no means saying the prestige or rigor of UC Davis is superior to other top schools, but you're delusional if you think with those numbers that CC GPAs are not higher than UCD GPAs. All things considered, UCD is a pretty easy school (those average major GPAs are pretty high), but you're flat out wrong.
I use plain printer paper + a three hole punch, and a few of these notebook/binder hybrids (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O3F2R6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IMGfAbF89FQ0T). I usually print out slides too, so the notebook/binder allows me to organize and move notes around. This has been working fine for me, but I think I may invest in an iPad and pencil because I don’t like using so much paper. There’s just too much clutter with this much paper.
Everything the rest said PLUS if you have a nice bike/bike seat get a thin cable lock to run down to the rest of your lock setup, to make it harder than a few turns of a screw to take your seatpost. It's pretty expensive on Amazon. A 4 pack is $21.
I've owned Kryptonite locks that have seized, I've cut my friends' Kryptonite locks when the tumble has broken. They're not worth $50. A cheaper U lock will do the same job. It's all just tempered stainless steel with a polymer jacket, no matter the manufacturer.
Paying more for a folding lock makes a little bit more sense because they have articulations, which can be weak spots if they're not over-engineered to compensate (Abus does this).
This is what you want.
If you don't need a specific windows programs on your laptop, you can get a refurbished 15" chrome book for as low as $160 or new for as low as $220. Only limitation is you can't use any windows programs or applications. You can use google docs/drive as word etc. My dad bought a new one and my uncle has a refurbished one of these and they work great. We haven't had a single problem with them.
