He’s known for carrying around his well read copy of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. If you ever get the chance to read it, I highly recommend it. If you delve deeply it causes the reader to become more introspective on his/her place in life and the legacy that you’re leaving behind. This is an opinion, but I don’t see someone who isn’t determined to do the best they can at leaving the world a better place carrying that particular reminder with them.
Have you read "Flyboys" by the same author? While this was happening, one Island to the north, Chi Chi Jima, the Japs were eating our prisoners to take in their warrior spirit. James Bradley was contacted by a man who had been sworn to secrecy due to the fact they held secret war crimes trials and executions there. The books has the best two chapter primer about what led up to the war. It is absolutely on par with "The Rape of Nanking". It will change the way you look at the Pacific war.

Another time, the ball committee took the 8 bucks per person or whatever they were going to spend on a gift and donated it ti a veterans charity. Everyone got a little card that said what it was donated to at their seat. We really liked that.
But yeah, mugs, coins, wine glasses, all wack as fuck and everyone already has a bunch.
So everyone here is going to jump on you for bitching about a subpar sleeping system. Then they’re going to EAS, turn around and bitch about how everyone just told them to shut the fuck up and suck it up and that’s why they got out, because nobody cares. Fuck those asswipes. So here’s a link to a $30 fix for your problem. Snugpak Liner I hope this helps.

My Dad was a demolitions man with E/2/1. While your take about Chesty's men hating him, you are correct. My Dad didn't like him and felt that he was a butcher. There was rumor that Chesty said he would get the MOH if it took a seabag full of dog tags to do it. From a PFC's point of view I'm sure that how it felt. The 1st Marine CG had a standing order to attack every morning at 0900. Chesty complained to MajGen Rupertus that his regiment was decimated and that he could not maintain the attack. Rupertus' reply was "you're still there aren't you? The attack goes as planned." Rupertus had broken his leg prior to the invasion, so he was holed up in an anti-tank ditch and never walked the lines to see how his Marines were doing, so he generally no idea what the conditions on the front were. The overall MAF commander, MajGen Geiger, met up with Puller. The two walked out of earshot of everyone, so what was said between the two will never be know, but Geiger immediately went to Rupertus' CP and told him that either 1st Marines comes off the line or he would relieve him of command. Rupertus argued against it, saying one last hard push would win the battle. Geiger did not retract his order and Rupertus complied under protest.
My Dad's company landed with 235 Marines. 200 hours later, when 1st Marines were pulled out of the line, 18 Marines walked off the line under their own power. Dad had been shot through the upper arm but refused to be evacuated. He didn't want to leave his buddies.

I also assume you want something inexpensive, that doesn't suck.
One of the most popular laptops for large corporations is the Lenovo ThinkPad.
We buy them by the thousands because they are built like tanks, take years of Road Warrior abuse and are very easy (on the laptop scale of difficulty) to upgrade & repair when necessary.
Large companies seriously order these things by the shipping pallet and upgrade them on a fixed schedule of about 3 years.
The old ones are solve in bulk to refurbishers for a song.
This $250 ThinkPad was top-of-the-line just a couple of years ago (like 4 ish years):

Parts like power bricks, batteries and even the entire keyboard are easy to replace, and easy to buy via Amazon.
Lenovo makes the technical service manual available for download for free that tells you exactly how to stip it down to replace any part.
I know Best Buy will have a sexy-looking Asus laptop on sale for $500 and change. But trying to repair that Asus if you break of a key on the keyboard is a huge pain in the ass.
That's my suggestion.
/r/SuggestALaptop can also be a big help.
Attach one of these to the top of your door frame. Get a piece of 550 cord/ or string. Tie one end of the string around the water bottle and secure the string to the top end of the door using hot glue or whatever. Hang string over hook and you're good to go.
Download this app. Its the gameboy. Dont open it yet.

FMJ was based on <em>The Short-Timers</em> by Gustav Hasford. He had served in the Corps in Vietnam, but he was basically Joker, so the movie has his point of view as interpreted by an English director.
Hasford evidently hated PI and his DI. The story of the sniper is radically different between the movie and the book. Even in the movie, the sniper scene is stupid. They're sitting there wondering what to do while 8 Ball is suffering. The obvious thing is to conceal him with smoke, fire suppressive fire, and drag him to cover. They end up doing just that, but not until the debating society and whatever-will-I-do ends.
R. Lee Ermey admitted to punching recruits, but he said it wasn't as bad or abusive as shown in the movie.
Sometimes when vets describe a movie as accurate, they're talking about a reflection of mood or attitude. Most Vietnam vets say Apocalypse Now was a joke; a cartoon. A GO told me that it accurately reflected the reality of being face down in a rice paddy full of buffalo shit, rounds going over his head, while one mile away some box kicker was sitting in a/c drinking a beer.
Hard core. I read his book as a kid. https://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Rode-Thunder/dp/0135482712/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=william+rankin&qid=1611408154&s=books&sr=1-4

For anyone interested in Operation Flintlock, I recommend this book: The Marshall Islands 1944: Operation Flintlock, the capture of Kwajalein and Eniwetok (Campaign) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1841768510/
Kwajalein Atoll is one of the largest in the world. It was divided into two sectors, north (4th Marines) and south (7th Infantry Div). Four Marines were awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during Flintlock: Privates Sorenson and Anderson (for whom US Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll has two ships named), Lt Col Dyess (for whom US Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll has an airfield named), and Cpl Damato (who jumped on a grenade on Eniwetak Atoll).

Got out as a Sgt. The best thing that helped me develop my own leadership style was when I had a child. I started reading parenting books, everything from how to get kids to eat broccoli to how to encourage them to sleep. So this is going to sound demeaning, but I genuinely do not mean it that way.
As weird as it sounds, my advice would be to read, “How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen”. The book is all about human communication, and covers everything from addressing concerns that seem trivial to how to talk about problems and solutions, as well as things like motivating people to clean up. I mean this with the utmost sincerity, that book will improve your communication with EVERYONE, above, around, and especially, below you.
>Yeah tried that but apparently they're not the real thing
Okay, I going to jump on this grenade, like motived Sergeant.
What do you need a 7k loan for?
This just doesn't sound smart, why don't you attempt to unload some of your possessions before trying to find a loan I read it many years ago. It should be mandatory reading for all Marines and or most people in general. I'm not saying it's a great book, but it's a start... It's at an Lcpl reading level. this is the American way. Purchasing things on credit only makes the bankers rich and you poor. The bankers always win by collecting your interest on the loan. Bankers/payday loans are legalized drug dealers. Debt is modern-day slavery.
What I can recommend is you read the following book. https://www.amazon.com/Rich-Dad-Poor-Teach-Middle/dp/1612680194 I read it many years ago. It should be mandatory reading for all Marines and or most people in general. I'm not saying it's a great book, but it's start... It's at a Lcpl reading level.

My dad was also on Hill 55. He was a regimental intel scout for 1st Marines (he says he was never a sniper). This was from October 1968-Oct 1969, so slightly different time frame.

The answer is both simple and disappointing.
Most units that actually deal with real explosives and frequent small arms will issue or otherwise provide hearing protection.
Other units that deal with such things less frequently will not issue or provide, and thus leave it to the individuals.
What this means to you is this:
YOUR hearing is ultimately YOUR responsibility to protect.
See this fecking thing right here:

Buy one of those.
Every time you go to the field, put two packs in your blouse pocket and a dozen more somewhere in your kit.
If the training day requires you to blow shit up, put earplugs in and leave them in as much of the day as you can.
I served in an Artillery unit (not on the gun line) and I still lost about 10% of my hearing.
Mostly because I didn't follow the same guidance I am offering you now.
Please learn from my mistake.

You may want to close the door before opening.
You would think so, but there are idiots that make asinine facebook comments on the sergeants major of the Marine Corps and Army pages. The Sergeant Major of the Army actually had to make a post about going to chains of command of the more extreme offenders.
People get behind their keyboard and think they are untouchable, they don't realize the things they do online (especially facebook with your real name and picture) can have real consequences. This goes for civilians too.
And for god's sake, lock your profile down.
I can't remember my OCC # off the top of my head. It was in fall '94 and the ten week course. I then went to TBS as part of B Co (B-95).
Can we please get some Marines to vote in this contest for my business and a fellow Marines' business? It's for a grant and would mean a ton. We are competing with Army, AF, Navy etc businesses. Thank you! SF
Here, I uploaded this for you.
> Research findings have indicated a high risk for injuries during Army basic combat training. During training, 51 percent of women and 27 percent of men were injured. The risk of lower extremity injury for women was 2.13 times that of men and for stress fractures 4.71 times that of men. The higher risk of injury for women was related to a lower level of fitness when compared to men.
> It has also been reported that 54 percent of women sustained reportable injuries during Army basic training. These injuries resulted in an average time loss of 13 days. Duiring this study, women participated in an integrated ocnditioning program and completed extensive road marches wearing combat boots. Incidence of injury was related to greater body weight and body fat and limited leg strength.
Civi here, but a hiker. I would add that a blister can form within a blister. If you are going to pop it make sure they aren't layered. Also, after you clean it and let it get air, clean it again just in case. Infection or fever is all too common.
EDIT: Don't know how I just didn't link this since this is where I learned it from; here is some official medical advice from the Mayo Clinic

Likely you are talking about the discounted Home Use Program (HUP). I would search that on military one source or contact IT. The link is unique to each organization (military service / government agency) that has it. However, it isn't the same as it used to be. You no longer get a full downloaded version on your PC. Now you get a discounted subscription to Office 365. I think its $70 a year. Some schools offer it free for students. My wife gets it that way. You can also try https://www.libreoffice.org/ it's an opensource clone. Does everything office does, looks the same as a little older version and actually does some other stuff that office can't. Worth a look.
Wow, that's amazing to run into someone who's living Marine Corps history. Having a bonafide PLA rifle from back then is a big find too, since so many people forget that the US and China once engaged in direct all-out combat.
A veteran is attempting to crowdfund an animated film about the battle and has made some progress towards production.
My Dad was at Walter Reed waiting around and out of the elevator comes Gen Mattis. The General notices my Dad's 3/26 cap and says "we learned about you guys when I was in OCS. You chewed some rough shit!"

Get a set of shirt stays that fasten around your thigh, like a drop holster (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0797XX7R9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ESlnFbYSM4S7F). Those feel way better than the foot loop or ones that attaches to the sock.
Get some tool box liner or self sticking athletic tape, anything that grabs really good, and super glue that inside or around the clips, you want it so that it is really tight when you close it. That helps keeping the shirt stays from coming undone, and make them last a long while.
Can't remember where it was streaming but there was a great documentary about the Army Regimental Combat team that was all but wiped out East of Chosin. It was known as Task Force Faith. They were badly outnumbered and their Higher Command ordered them to keep pushing North even when they had started running into the Chinese. As a result they were strung out over a wide area with minimal supporting Arms when the Chinese surrounded their units and started chewing them up. They fought their asses off but were just overwhelmed. There CO and the next in line was KIA and they ended up fighting for their lives and trying to get through to Marine lines. When they got there they were in horrible shape. Some Navy Chaplain wrote a stinging report that they just ran and didnt put up a fight and it took 50 years before the truth about what they really did came out.

Yes. Someone posted a link to NBC for vets so you may want to do that instead. If you want a VPN, I use Mullvad ( https://mullvad.net/en/ ) which is 5 euro a month ($6 or so). You use OpenVPN on your phone and connect with their instructions here: https://mullvad.net/en/guides/installing-mullvad-android-devices/ . When selecting which configuration to download, select Canada and you're set. If you do file sharing etc. you may want to just hang onto it to protect yourself from being tracked.
If you want to clarify between First and Second Lieutenant shorthand, you can write 1Lt and 2Lt. But Lt should be fine for both.
If you want a good series about "future Marines" for inspiration, I'd recommend "The Empire's Corps." Don't need to read the entire series, first book is fine. The author did a good job with ranks, jargon and 'espirit de corps'. He made me a believable representation of a Marine Corps hundreds of years from now. The books are pretty quick reads. I got the Audible versions and enjoyed them.

The Japanese had "doctors" trained to be butchers. They would lash you to a tree and harvest the meat of your lower body and not hit the arteries. You would last a day or so. The next day they would come back and finish you. American and Ausie troops came up on men then half harvested and had to shoot them. They were sworn to secrecy. It was pretty much brought out by the author of Flags of Our Fathers. It's an amazing terribly awful thing to read. The first three chapters are the best short history primer you will find leading up to the war.

review:
This is an educational account of what it was like to be an intelligence advisor during the late stages of the war. The author was an army captain who was not enthusiastic about American intervention in Southeast Asia. Mr. Herrington pontificates at length about the intricate dynamic of "winning the hearts and minds" of a people split between wanting freedom from oppression and wanting a better lot in life. Be careful of your bedfellows is the message. He offers stories about trying to convince captured Communist soldiers to work for the South Vietnamese government. Finally, he explains the frustration in the realization that many of the root causes for the success of the Communist agenda were the result of corruption inside the South Vietnamese government system. The Forgotten Highlander He was a Scottish soldier right before WWII started in Singapore. His unit was surrendered to the Japanese and he spend years as a POW, survived the Bataan death March, and was a slave worker on the Burmese railroad. Definitely talks about fear and pushing through when you have nothing left to give. This book helped me realize that the things I was going through were things I could overcome. Because the mind can outlast the body.

Get this book at the library, bro! Helped greatly.

The only time I decided to go to a chaplain, while waiting in a waiting room, some Devil decided to wack off right there in front of everyone, there was a hot WM present worked there i guess.
I was like, I'm outta here. I'll DIY this shit.

I'm atheist, but my go-to book to read is the Book of Job, go straight to Chapter 37, any translation will do. That's the gist of life right there, bro. Who the fuck are you to question?
I'd like to advocate for Tecnu, which you mentioned:
It's roughly the same price (but a bottle of Tecnu might not last as long as the product you mention) and is available at Walgreens/CVS/Walmart.

I wouldn't waste a dime on calamine lotion.

Memorize it, but also keep one of these in your IFAK along with a Zap card. Also put a zap card and 9 line card in your left sleeve pocket of your blouse.
You can buy them off Amazon. Before the scamdemic they were pretty cheap $10-$12 a piece. That’s doubled now. I have bought from this guy plenty of times. I use them when I go backcountry hiking and don’t want to take a stove and mess kit.

The Marine Division has a Motor-T Battalion as a subordinate unit.
But that isn't the entire pool of all vehicles in the Division.
Each subordinate unit (Regiments usually) also have their own Motor-T elements.
The Artillery Regiment generally has more total vehicles than the Division Motor-T Battalion.
Even the Infantry Regiment has trucks, and mechanics to keep them running.
What you need to understand is that a Marine Division rarely goes to war as a Division-sized force.
It is far more common for the Corps to send a smaller combined-arms (grunts, armor, arty, helos & fixed-wing assets) into combat.
This is where the MEU, the RCT and the MEF unit formations come into play.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_expeditionary_unit
A MEU is one Infantry Battalion, plus a Battery of Arty, some LAI, Engineers and so on. About 1,000 to 1,500 Marines. Plus Air components.
An RCT is one Infantry Regiment, plus an array of support elements.
A MEF is a Division-sized combat formation.
All of these combat formations are created by tasking units from the Division to temporary duty to the MEU/MEB/RCT/MEF command.
These assignments are all coordinated & scheduled a year or more in advance, with waves of equipment heavy maintenance, replenishment and training cycles to prepared the units for their duty with the MEU.
This book is getting a bit dated (published in 2009), and the level of accuracy is fading, but it is (or was) a high-quality exploration of a MEU:
Marine: A Guided Tour of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (Tom Clancy's Military Reference Book 4)
The trick is, to Australia is you hang out with your black and Hispanic Marine buddies. You'll get a lot of action; White and asian Marines, not so much. not exotic enough for them, i guess. but black and Hispanics, the Aussie girls go crazy.

I read https://www.amazon.com/World-Lit-Only-Fire-Renaissance/dp/0316545562 something similar here, in which Magellan's men where ever they went in their round the world voyage , local women practically raped the dudes. instinct, hormones , genetic, or something.

I dunno, what the reason is, but black and Hispanic Marines are highly desired in Australia. Oh, and kangaroos are delicious!
I had no idea the USN makes an Energy Drink
I found it here:

But if there is a better source that perhaps provides a better profit margin for the author, I'm open to using an oddball bookstore portal for a good cause.
/u/FluffyClamShell any input?
There's lots of books about The War, look at some recent ones. There's a multi-volume saga by one Ian W. Toll. https://www.amazon.com/Pacific-War-Trilogy-3-book-series/dp/B084SRTBJC?ref=dbs_m_mng_rwt_0000_ext It is my favorite.
There’s a decent off-brand electric razor you can get on Amazon with a display that shows how much juice is left. Sucks to have your shaver die halfway through your shave. Also, I don’t press it too hard against my face bc if I do I’ll get ingrown hairs. If you gotta use it twice a day then so be it, for me it was better for my face than shaving with a regular razor every single day M-F
And there is even an audio book for you ssgts that can't read.
I'm going to check it out.
Thank you to everyone that's already filled it out!
The more data the better.
If anyone is curious, the survey is called a "self report habit index" and it was first created in this 2003 paper: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/227615354_Reflections_on_Past_Behavior_A_Self-Report_Index_of_Habit_Strength
You can click the "read the full publication" button at that link to read the whole thing for background on it. It's the first really good quantification of habit strength.
