Musically, Frank was such an individual artist that it just didn't work to truly collaborate. Case in point is the show with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which you'd think could be great, but it amounted to the Mothers performing their actual songs with Yoko Ono wailing over the top. Another example would be Mister Sting performing "Murder by Numbers" with the 1988 band -- Sting couldn't honestly contribute anything musically to Frank's band, so it was just a cover with a guest singer. I'd think if Frank collaborated with an established jazz artist like you mentioned, something would be compromised on either side -- like if Frank's band played with Miles Davis, Miles would be the bandleader, and without Frank "in charge" the band would be something less than it usually was, or vice versa.
I think the only example of something that worked was Zappa at the Nova Convention, 1978, with William Burroughs. Zappa working with artists from different media (other than music) had a lot of potential.
I love this album. Like most albums I've fallen in love with, I initially had a hard time warming up to it, and this was my first exposure to Dilla. This sample kept me listening because I thought, if he's sampling Frank, there's gotta be something here.
Edit: Also same experience with Madvillainy mentioned above - spectacular album
Edit 2: Now I'm stuck on this: http://www.whosampled.com/Frank-Zappa/ - very thorough sample list

As a huge Zappa fan and a huge surf rock fan, Lemme Take You to the Beach is one of my favorite and most played albums. It's an entire album of surf rock covers of his music, and they all work extremely well. Peaches and We are Not Alone work particularly well
Here you go! https://www.scribd.com/doc/268295257/Uncle-Remus-Transcription
Yeah! There's something I did like two years go. Never finished it completely, but most of it's there. Could be a little hard to... read. Or play. But it should serve you well enough.
(There are some parts after the vocal comes in where I for some reason decided it'd be a great idea to write both the actual bassline and the lefthand piano on the same staff in a few spots. Just follow your heart and you'll know which is which, and what should and should not be played solo)
Yes, he had a breakdown and was committed in 1946. I remember reading somewhere that he walked into a hotel lobby, naked, asking to use the phone. They sent him back to his room where he set his mattress on fire with a cigarette.
Edit: Found it
So glad I'm not the only person that doesn't think Freak Out! and Hot Rats and Joe's Garage are the single best things ever done by Frank Zappa (though I'm not saying I think they're the very worst, either).
Those albums coast on their reputation more than their merit.
I don't know what FZ himself thought of Joe's Garage, but I do know that he mainly looked back at Hot Rats as "that album I did with the 16-track machine" more than "my magnum opus". As for Freak Out, he fired the Mothers when they were at the peak of the popularity. So it wasn't a money thing, it was a music thing he quit them for (which explains why he kept some (Ian) but dropped others).
Once again I have failed to write a short comment, or how to make a long one short. I need to get The Elements of Style before allowing myself back onto the Internet.

There you go. That's the Zomby Woof Finale file.
A lot of this shit's much easier to follow with the finale files (if you've got Finale,) since I didn't bother to put "A section" "B section" etc in most of the transcriptions.
Someone else found it! https://www.amazon.com/Prophetic-Attitude-Concert-Impromptu-2002-10-01/dp/B01K8LSVGU “Prophetic Attitude” by Le Concert Impromptu. This absolute gem is sadly not available on Spotify or Apple Music.
Got this a while back. The artists take some liberties in some places (i.e. Frank smoking a joint) but it's neat.
Howard wrote (https://www.amazon.com/Shell-Shocked-Turtles-Eddie-Frank/dp/1617808466/ref=nodl_?dplnkId=77aa7dd1-228c-467b-8a38-ea4fdaf10abd )[a great autobiography] that talks about it. Worth reading.
The 2007 DVD press is for sale used on amazon for $30, if it's worth that to you:

Or if you were me, you'd ask the guy who told you he got a copy and it's excellent to put it in a PC with an optical drive and free Handbrake software, then we could all enjoy it.
I know right. It's in fucking German. I suppose the jokes on us.
I'm not against ripping the whole thing and getting it translated. It's £169 book and out of print

The translations of the reviews in German are hilarious. It's clearly an amateur release with typos but it's an insane resource. It's BIG too - close A3 paper size closed - A2 open.
dats wak
maybe a skip doctor would take the scuffs out
I would highly recommend this book for the gear, and the interview with Mark Pinske here for some of the techniques. But basically FZ just spent more time and money than most in making his recordings sound precisely the way he wanted them to.
I like both explanations, although I suppose no one will ever know, unless someone shares some inside knowledge. Perhaps the kids/Gail know, but never felt it was an interesting enough topic to share about. It would be cool if /u/Studebaker_Hoch or Gail, or kids or someone would chime in here and show their sources for such information. Incidentally, "brillo", in Spanish, means an aura-like halo, which might explain the "flaming out" appearance that Zappa describes, Brillo-pad explanations we're seeing here seem more likely to be the correct explanation. Dictionary of American Slang has defined "brillo" as "a black person", citing the same references to wiry hair, so it wouldn't surprise me if Zappa's proclivity for racial humor was also involved here. Would be really cool to know what the man was truly thinking from a reputable source.
Did you find it with that tape on the back or did you add it?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it's absolutely ruined. The acid from that (duct?!) tape will leach into the paper and destroy the poster. It will start to yellow in a few years and the paper degradation will follow shortly thereafter.
Archival tape meant for paper restoration should have been used.
Pretty sure every Zappa record got reissued on vinyl around 2013. But absolutely free even got another reissue with bonus tracks not too long ago.
Indeed, love the Frank pun intended, to be Frank! Love what he says about all world currencies without a gold-back standard too - essentially they are all the same & can be manipulated as such as seen in the infamous “Libor scandal” not too long ago. Actually, many took a page out of Frank’s book quite literally & figuratively themselves without giving him any credit whatsoever, the other dark-side of the American way & British way too. We just saw this play out playing up to the 2016 US Presidential elections where Vlad Putin was charged by the aristocratic Russian community to do something about the Ruble that was in free-fall & they couldn’t get their capital out of Russia. Well, many were able to do that last few years in various ways. Billions, billions, billions, billions, and, billions, billions…
Ah okay, I never actually rented anything from Amazon with it, I'm sure I've watched things using one in the past but that was maybe included in a Prime membership or purchased outright, I don't remember. You could try iTunes, a colleague used to watch US iTunes using a VPN, but that was a few years ago now and his wife was possibly even American so might have used a US credit card.
I watched the doc at one of the Dutch film festival online screenings using ExpressVPN, there may be other European one off screenings coming up.
edit: in fact it's showing tonight at 8pm GMT, I used a UK credit card and ExpressVPN and it was fine.
If you want to avoid further regret you can preorder the Uncle Meat Project/Object on Amazon for $25 right now. Three discs. Should be good.

There's this text as well, though I think with this and Watson we've basically exhausted crit-theory type of engagements with Zappa. Weirdly it seems there's a trend of assuming there's a mass of literature on him when there actually doesn't seem to be much.
There is an enjoyable documentary about this list (free if you have Amazon Prime).
I just ordered my copy at Amazon but not from them but from their resellers for $15 + $4 shipping.
Dale Brumfield emailed me today that "I will dig up that issue cover and email it to you when I restore my laptop." So I'm hoping to post it once received.
He also talked about the issue in his book, "Richmond Independent Press:: A History of the Underground Zine Scene".
His website is http://www.dalebrumfield.net/
His stated area of expertise is "Literary & Digital Archaeology". I so want to be a digital archaeologist. Truly that sounds like a perfect job. :)
This isn't exactly true either - check out "Zappa the Hard Way" by Andrew Greenaway (http://www.amazon.com/Zappa-The-Hard-Andrew-Greenaway/dp/1908724005/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330785329&sr=8-1)
Basically, it ends up sounding like Frank's health was already getting bad by the 88 tour, and he used the Scott situation as an escape clause.
The earliest reference to the James Baker event that I can find is in this book from 2002. I haven't read it, so I have no idea whether the author cites an original source or not. It would be interesting to know.
