Everyone in this thread worried about missing alerts, by yourself one of these radios, program it for county code 018105, weather radio channel 162.450, put some long-lasting batteries in there and keep it in earshot during bad weather.
These saved our bacon a couple of times growing up in Illinois, and you won't sleep through it, I guarantee.

There are many great trails around here. This has some of them:
https://www.alltrails.com/explore/us/indiana/bloomington
Other than trying to tackle all of the Tecumseh trail, none of them are particularly daunting hikes. My favorite is Pate Hollow on 446. Close to town, hilly, and the structure makes it easy to get the distance you want out of a loop (between 2 and 6 miles).
Just remember if you do actually go Comcast, to do yourself a favor and buy your own hardware. Get yourself a good DOCSIS 3.0 modem (or 3.1 if you want to spring for gigabit) and a router that won't bottleneck you.
I've had Comcast for multiple years in multiple apartments, both in college with 2 roommates and post grad with my gf. Outside of the outage from like 2-4am once every 4ish months give or take, I've always received the service I paid for. I won't try and say they're a company ran by good people (they're not), but the service is reliable if you get the right hardware for the job. The combo I linked ya would break even in under a year's worth of rental fees.
The City's PulsePoint feed reports that there was a "medical emergency" around that general location at 7:30pm-ish today, so they might have been responding to that call.
This is weird, looks like a regional thing for the entire Midwest and not a local sensor anomaly: https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/bloomington/47408/air-quality-index/328780.
It depends on your prescription(s) and insurance. Here's a Consumer Reports article that breaks it down well.
If you want great service, find an independent pharmacy (I think Pharmacy 1 Express is such, I've never been and don't know how they do, they're right by the hospital so it's less convenient for most students but great for sick people). Independents tend to have the best service and the least problems with out-of-stock meds and long waits. However they're more expensive, sometimes a lot, so check insurance details.
If you want cheap, go big-box. You'll probably hate them, but hey, you're saving money. I've been using Target just because there's a Starbucks there so I can drop off, get a coffee, maybe buy things I need anyway, and pick up my prescription.
If you want convenient nationwide, a rewards program, and possibly negotiated rate with your insurer (check your plan details), then it's CVS time.
If you want to just pick them up without special trips, use your supermarket. They'll probably be annoying and suck though.
Depends on your definitions of "cheap" and "decent". The price for a queen mattress can run anywhere from like $300 to $8000... so words like cheap/decent are going to be pretty relative. www.sleeplikethedead.com calls anything under $700 for a queen a low-price mattress. (Midrange is $700-1800.)
With that in mind and free delivery being important, you could consider one of the very highly rated foam mattresses from Amazon. Here's a link to Tuft & Needle's mattress -- but just scroll down to the "Compare to Similar Items Section" and you should see the specs and reviews for Sleep Innovations and Brentwood Home as well.
I'm no expert, but I feel like one of these 3 mattresses could be the most "decent" in the $500-600 range.
If you are looking cheaper (but not smaller--because of course a full/double would save you money over the queen size)... there should be options locally. We bought a spring mattress from Pate's Mattress Outlet (4500 Centennial Drive--Might be closed now?) about 6 years ago for about $350. (We did drive it home ourselves, though.)
It was good enough for us (an only moderately overweight couple), but after only about 4 years a couple springs had sprung and were poking through the top edges of the mattress--probably from us sitting on the edge of the bed.
Redpocket 360 annual plan. You pay $100/year for 1 gig of data each month. Choose the network : Verizon, at&t or TMobile (they send you 3 sim cards). In general MVNOs will be cheaper than the big 3. Check out this comparison table for prices: https://airtable.com/shrraH105YVJQF2Yr/tblEszFJtM4p2YEvP/viwJEW7c3bvoCRqN1
Wow, what is this cycle you speak of? Is it like the cycle where I have to cover up from head to toe when I go outside to avoid being covered in hives and blisters because I'm actually allergic to the sun, and I overheat just standing still any time the outside temperature is above 68 degrees, and then I get covered in hives and blisters, anyway?
That sounds super!
There's so much outdoorsy shit to do in and around Bloomington. A few suggestions:
Definitely walk through the campus. Cool paths, lots of trees, interesting old buildings. It really is a beautiful and historic place. The Sample Gates (corner of Indiana Ave and Kirkwood Ave) is the logical place to go between the campus and the downtown area. You really should walk from there down Kirkwood Ave. to the courthouse square. I really don't think you can say you've experienced Bloomington until you've been through this area.
Let's see, what else...
Cascades park is cool and easy to get to if you just want to get away from the town and into some nature really close by. Griffy Lake - same thing. You could walk the B-Line trail too. That's at the opposite end of downtown from the campus.
I have to second the other commenter's suggestion that you go to the Atlas bar for drinks. I fucking love that place. Definitely the best bar in town imho. In case you're wondering what type of place it is, here's a small clue: they have this written on the front entrance. Good people. This will likely be a place where you meet cool people who can point you to more stuff happening while you're in town. Go there your first night in town (and possibly every other night as well.)
There's awesome food everywhere. There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread already, so go with some of them.
Soak it up and have fun. I'd party with you if I was in town. I really miss Bloomington when I'm gone.
It isn't semantics. Greed describes self-centered avarice- a necessary component of greed is the advancement of self at the expense of others.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/greed https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/greed
Your definition would seem to include examples like a charity holding a fundraiser in order to provide more services to people. Which doesn't seem like an example one would intuitively want to include in the set of predicate "greedy", given the lack of a self-centered component.
The outlying areas experience about as high of an incidence of crime, just of different kinds. Less PI and small quantity possession charges, different patterns in burglary (not your typical Xmas break campus housing patterns), higher incidence of more serious drug offenses, way higher on common nuisance, generally way lower on sexual assault (because of the university). Then of course you have the lion's share of thefts/criminal conversions and shoplifting occurring at Walmart and the hardware stores west of HW 37.
Fiber internet will need to be expanded, and presumably there will be some sewer lines that need to be connected for any systems not on septic. Coax and power are private utilities, so it wouldn't matter for them.
And generally speaking, the property values are going to be less the further you get out from inside the city. Or at least, the value of those properties won't be as inflated by the development boom currently going on in Bloomington. So tax revenue is likely to be less.
You can like it or not like it, agree that it is the best administrative decision or not the best administrative decision, but I think that describing it as greedy is, again, hyperbolic.
I was also reading a kind of interesting story this morning about modern apartment construction, where they found all these loopholes and new construction methods (and eventually a coordinated building code push) to churn out these balloon-frame stick buildings that all look the same.
Basically those buildings in most places are limited to 5 stories because of fire code (and oh man are they a fire nightmare until the sprinkler systems are in and switched on), but they're super cheap to build compared to basically anything else.
Oh, there's other things on the periphery of "cryptocurrency" that are also very interesting. Primarily, I'm looking at distributed and error-correcting systems, dHT, blockchains that dont involve worth, and more.
For example, I'm looking at /r/ipfs , a new distributed file sharing/hosting system. Picture writing a webapp with no backend and distributed storage of everyone who's looked at your content.
Like this: Atari 2600 IPFS
On behalf of stating your pride upfront, I wanted to show my honest-to-God appreciation for your honesty.
Also, I didn't draw this simple little number, but it still popped up as relevant when I did an image search for the hilarious scene your last sentence put into my head.
Well I'm sorry you haven't met decent people. But they exist, and I hope you can meet some and have an open mind to talk one day. But, to say things like "anyone that can support him is just as vile" is terrible. And so ironic! Do you know who you sound like exactly!? This is what dichotomy and pluralism and intolerance gets you. Pluralistic Liberals sounding exactly like Bigoted Republicans. You are no different on the face.
...lol I don't want to get into a big economics debate with you but trickle down economics certainly works. Think about it: it's how, essentially, our country has run since its inception. You don't think the poor have more than they did 10, 20, 50, 100 years ago? You don't think this country has prospered?
AllTrails has the best map of the trails there.
Yes, thankfully, it is fixed.
This was the second time damage had happened to the arm.
The first time was back in the 1990s, and Howard Canada (of Howard's Bookstore) led a campaign to repair and rededicate the statue.
There's a little book about it (and bit more about the statue) that can found here:
https://www.amazon.com/Peace-Statue-Iconic-Bloomington-Indiana/dp/1673748953/
I don't know if it will make you feel better or not, but if you are in Bloomington, you are pretty much guaranteed there is someone armed within a 1/4 mile of you in any direction you go. So, it will either feed your paranoia or help you shape the statistics a little better.
Further, people with a common disrespect for the law are going to disrespect the law regardless. So if some asshat wants to use his/her firearm to shift situations dynamic to one more of their liking (or so they think), I ALSO don't want that person armed regardless of the law.
Every single gun person I know and associate with (and its a looooooooot) has this exact opinion on the issue.
I have a coworker who lives outside of town who uses 4/5G internet with a hotspot. I suppose that's satellite in a way but not quite the same as Starlink/Viasat/HughesNet.
It works for him but the performance and usage caps are much worse than the speeds you will get with a wired connection from Comcast or AT&T.
Until Smithville or municipal internet becomes available in Bloomington, I would recommend sticking to Comcast or AT&T. Especially if you are a heavy user or your job depends at all on your connection.
I don't know how techy you are but one thing I've found makes my experience with Comcast better (this probably applies to AT&T as well) is to own my own modem and router. It eliminates the monthly rental fee and has performed very well since 2014. There's not much setup other than plugging them in and making sure the modem's address is registered with the provider during initial setup.
For reference my Comcast internet in town speed tests at 102 Mbps down and 12 Mbps up at with $75/mo home internet.
Good luck!
> Until RCA probably seized the local radio market when u/DocPepson says Showers Furniture, who made RCA's wood cabinets, built Rogers St to the new RCA factory - then across S Rogers from the now Community Kitchen.
Showers built the original factory building sitting on the site; as an expansion to their downtown factories, as documented in the book Showers Brothers Furniture Company: The Shared Fortunes of a Family, a City, and a University. RCA bought the abandoned site to build radio cabinets. As it was also released there was a secret team that also made fuses for the war effort. There actually is mention about Crosley in that book as a competitor.
When RCA began operations there, they only made the cabinets; but then quickly began making the radios as well, then converting to TVs. My grandfather worked there after the war; and worked in TV & Radio his entire life. I do not know how long he worked there, but he's documented as working there in the 1950 census. At one point being the only TV/Radio expert for a 100 mile radius from where he lived.
Thanks for the vault of information on the neighborhoods /u/Alstringe , I did not know several of those things.
There's lots of history to discover here. The sad part is that much of it has been transformed into something you can't directly identify with that history anymore.
You like to read, so I will recommend a book. Showers Brothers Furniture Company: The Shared Fortunes of a Family, a City, and a University. This book details and highlights so much about the city and the area. Including the foundlings of the hospital that is currently being demolished, the issues Bloomington had from the start with a water supply (which was resolved for the most part by the building of Lake Monroe), the factory that is now Catalent, which was also the home of color TV, the list goes on and on and on.
I was born and raised here, and have for the most part never been a fan of the bar scene myself.
If you want to dig deeper into history, our history center is a pretty awesome place, you should check it out.

For size-of-town, Bedford is a better fit.
I think you're missing some of the issues in your conversation on this.
The US spends considerably more on healthcare per person for worse outcomes. In large part because the way we spend money on healthcare is super inefficient, and isn't really a free market. It's a "system" in the sense that healthcare is only affordable to people who have employer provided health insurance provided as a benefit of full-time employment. The wide scale popularity of employer provided health insurance is an artifact of wage caps during WWII (a much more blatant government intervention than government healthcare), which required employers to compete for talented workers by offering benefits.
Our government does spend a lot of money on healthcare in the form of Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and frequently, where government is the purchaser, chargemaster prices tend to be lower than they are for private group or individual insurance providers. Tri-care is mostly at cost, while Medicare has more bargaining leverage better prices because they represent a large part of a healthcare provider's business.

One of the best books I've read on the status of the American medical industry. Atul Gawande's stuff is really good, too. And of course, the 2007 study on bankruptcies due to medical debt, coauthored by Elizabeth Warren.
Here is what I use! Brand name is Wolverine. It just handles 8mm and super 8mm. It's nothing crazy, but does the job just fine! Cheers.

No, not a risky click and yes a real item. And no, I was not using it in a derogatory way.
A lot of people use straw to drink soda to keep their teeth healthy. Maybe instead of banning straw, Bloomington should ban sugary drinks?
That might be better for everyone. Now if someone can make a viral video of it....

I'm not entirely clear what you're actually asking for, and in any case there's probably a surprising wealth of options, but GIMP is a freeware graphics editor that you can check out.
Not sure if you saw the edit, but I didn’t see that you were looking for in town options when I originally answered. Dr. Puri’s are very highly rated for filtration efficiency. Their medium fits my 10 year old. The large fits my 13 year old and me. The straps are a bit long so I had to buy some adjusters to make them fit snugly.
I put together some mask information (for my kiddo’s school) with a link to the report where these were rated. If you’re interested I can give a try at DMing you with the info but there are a ton of links and I’m not sure how they’d translate into a message
I've had a similarly frustrating experience. Not that pricy and should be able to keep at least one room comfortably warm.
Hi, we do bale gardening too! This year and last year we used FB Marketplace to connect with someone in Morgantown who delivered to us for an extra fee. Came out to $250 for 42 bales with delivery. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/467843230828834/
i promised this in another thread but never delivered. heres a link to just about every rental property in bloomington + contact info.
the only catch is you have to pay it forward to others and update any info you find that's no longer accurate.
Buy something like this and use a hair dryer to fit it to the window. Natural gas prices are going up also, so that could be a factor.

I work from home exclusively now for a company on the west coast. I make high COL money in a comparatively low COL area. It's the only way I could afford to stay/live here. I started out using Upwork.com and freelance.com and ended up finding my full time gig on Craiglist Indy. Get creative with your job search and don't lock yourselves into one field. There are ALWAYS ways to make $ if you are willing to hustle and be relentless in your search. I drove Uber for 7 months when I was between full time gigs in 2017, and it sucked a lot, but it was quick cash in my pocket the same day and I could work whatever hours I needed to get by while I was looking for something long-term. I know VERY few people who don't have some kind of side hustle (or 2 or 3) here, even the wealthy folks have invested in land/real estate/small businesses/what have you. So does the job market suck? I guess...but dig deeper than the surface and I think you'll be quite pleased at what other opportunities exist.
if you are that concerned you could always try to get an appt with a psychiatrist, who should be highly understanding of your position and could easily assess you again and provide an rx
alternately, you could consider going to Indy
although I realize you are basically asking to doctor shop, it is a problem here in Bloomington that students try to get ADHD diagnosis and meds for nefarious reasons, and I'm guessing you are relaying some of your feelings in this post because you realize this as well
you might also consider getting yourself a mindfulness meditation habit, and take a look at n-backing, which has shown some efficacy in helping people with ADHD
http://brainworkshop.sourceforge.net/
if you have a history of childhood trauma, however, I suggest you look into treatment for that because very, very often ADHD is a manifestation of childhood trauma, not fundamental attention problems (
note - many people do not recognize their own history of childhood trauma... some reading about A.C.E.'s [adverse childhood experiences] is highly applicable here
good luck
2 and 3 were my favorites. However, I feel like I should mention, there's a fanmade PC version of guitar hero with loads of features and stuff called Clone Hero. If you have an old guitar hero controller that connects via usb, or buy an adapter for one, you can play all your old favorite guitar hero songs on your computer. Additionally, there are tons of newer custom songs made by community members you can download and play as well. I'd strongly recommend it, it's free and runs on nearly anything.

The Hangover II sounds like fun!... How much does a night at the movies cost in Bloomington? I stopped going to the theatres here in New York when I was charged $35 on 2 tickets, one small popcorn and a drink.. Was a mediocre movie too..
The POS who wrote this was responding to a fundraising campaign featuring a small child who was homeless. Just amazing.
Here's an interesting look at what Finland is doing by the way - amazingly, it turns out that if you just give people housing with no strings the moment they need it, they don't end up with all the usual problems that make homeless people hard to employ, and get their lives back together at less cost to taxpayers than the repeated trips to jail and uncompensated medical treatment.

It is pretty similar to prosciutto. Some variations based on pig breed (usually white Iberico) and diet. I think acorns as a finishing food is typical in traditional Serrano hams.
In the past I've made some (or an approximation) at home when I've gotten ahold of mangalica or something similarly special.
Proscuitto will be very similiar and might be easier to find, though the exchange student might be able to note some subtle differences with it.

I think I still have my copy from grad school.
I should say, too, that it also provides a really good physical geography of the different relevant areas of the city at the time, and matches up a sense of place with a sense of time really well. Which is an aside from the main argument of the book, but just an appreciation for well-written cultural history monograph, which also makes it a much more compelling and interesting read.
There is also the old Sarkes Tarsian factory, that I believe still is in operation off of Hillside. I just cannot recall the name.
That and ST Semicon (where Smallwood sits, my mom worked there for a while) were locations that TV tuners for RCA were produced.
I firmly believe our area created a large industrial sector primarily as a driver of means of production, since we did not have the advantages of places like Spencer or Bedford, with easy access to rivers.
The book "Showers Brothers Furniture Company: The Shared Fortunes of a Family, a City, and a University" should be required reading for all in the area in my opinion.
There is more of a push now to recognize the contributions that black people and people with African heritage made, and it is becoming the subject of a lot of scholarship.
I highly recommend High On The Hog on Netflix. Though I think that the groundwork is The Cooking Gene, by Michael Twitty who is a chef and cultural historian. In the book he talks about the oral history of his family, where they were enslaved, where they came from in Africa, and also his different white ancestors in his family tree. He compares that oral history with genetic testing of himself and relatives compared against data collected from other families whose ancestors were enslaved as well as the descendants of slave-owning families. And he weaves the narrative together by looking at the commonality of what people were growing and eating, and how those cultures blended together while their genetics were blending together too.
The biggest takeaway that changed a lot of my thinking, other than learning just how much of the south (and the US as a whole) was built by or influenced by African people, was how related everybody is. Pretty much every black person has European ancestry and many of the "white" people in the US have African ancestry.
It is a great read.

Different people would self-define differently of course, but broadly speaking Wicca falls under the umbrella of Neo-Paganism, which would apply to the practice/ritual/installations at Lothlorien. There's a cool book about Lothlorien/Neo-Paganism
I've mostly seen them on bicycles (NSFW, I guess) for the last couple of years (and only a couple of those). I got the impression they were storing something in them, like their keys, but I could never quite tell. Maybe they just liked cupping them.
What /u/eobanb said.
I'm reading through the updated version of Fuschia Dunlop's (who is sort of like the Julia Child for Chinese and particularly Sichuan food) book now where she talks about the spread of popularity of dishes from Sichuan and a lot of the development of those dishes and flavors that define the culinary style about a century ago, when there was a large population influx into the region.
The book is here if you're interested in the subject: https://www.amazon.com/Food-Sichuan-Fuchsia-Dunlop/dp/1324004835
As a hobby, I like to try to recreate dishes I've had while traveling or from restaurants, and I have been focusing on Sichuan lately.
My understanding is also that most of the people who wound up in America were from those coastal provinces. I had heard (and never confirmed) though that the original owner of Chow Bar was from the northern interior area, and might have been a famous singer/performer back home.
I read that a number of weather sources take raw NOAA weather data and skew it in ways that increase revenue. When weather is "worse", people pay more attention to it. Weather.com was mentioned.
I really like NOAA Weather Unofficial Pro https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nstudio.weatherhere
Unfiltered data, no ads and lots of features. Many widget options.
For hourly weather you can choose to see wind speed, dew point, humidity, whatever you need. It also makes a distinction between the percent chance of rain and how much rain. So it's clear when there may be a high probability of rain but it's going to be a sprinkle if it happens.
There is also a free version with small ads.

I honestly don't think they bother. There's such an incredible spike in anxiety disorders among this crowd (commonly but not conclusively tied to the bulldozer parenting that spared them from having to question their own assumptions) that this kind of raw nerve reactivity feels like a natural indication of who they are all the way down. Well intentioned, obviously, but, well...
I found this incredibly enlightening (and shockingly familiar). It's an unfortunate title (and not one the Author's chose), but it and the subsequent book are a well reasoned and sympathetic analysis of a few of the major factors that contribute to the situation.
not quite correct, and I might add, this can be very dangerous if someone gets confused, between a couple of things...
the best natural oil for repelling mosquitos is indeed eucalyptus oil, like this:

I love it, it all cost me less than $400, that is if you like a firm mattress. I've paid over $600 for a mattress before for a pillow top and it was bleh...
Store-bought kvass isn't as good, though this is my favorite generic flavor. That amazon price is ridiculous too, usually it's about $2-$3 a bottle. https://www.amazon.com/Monastyrskiy-Kvas-70-55-Ounce-Plastic-Bottle/dp/B001J61J36

Probably one of the better investigatory pieces written about the pre-ACA distribution problems in healthcare delivery.
Attul Gawande is another good author on the subject.
Like others have said, benadryl and we use this https://www.amazon.com/SynergyLabs-Veterinary-Clinical-Antiseptic-Antifungal/dp/B0037Z6VLM/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1524971971&sr=8-5&keywords=hot+spot+spray+for+dogs
our dog gets really bad skin allergies/hot spots and were taking him to the vet once a month it was so bad started using this spray and regularly check him and its been a life saver for him and our wallets.
I'm of the opinion that I would rather not have people know if I'm armed if I were to carry my weapon. If I ever have to use my gun, it's only because I've exhausted all other opinions. I rather have it hidden so who ever I'm dealing with isn't put into a heightened state of mind by seeing my weapon.
(An excellent book on this is In the Gravest Extreme. It's a pro-gun book, but isn't gun nut. It argues that your firearm should always be the last thing you use in a dangerous confortation in public.
Then again, I'm blessed to live in an area that is safe enough that I don't need to signal to others that I can defend myself.

I know you don't realize this, but it doesn't matter if you are tolerant or not. You haven't learned how to behave in public.
When someone posts about their horror movie, you don't post saying horror movies suck. No one at all cares what you think about that and didn't ask for your opinion.
People told you that on that thread, but you still didn't get it.
Maybe you should read this book?
https://www.amazon.com/Journal-Best-Practices-Marriage-Asperger/dp/1439189749
I know it isn't directly on point but maybe it will teach you how to deal with others more effectively.
This is the one I got. Definitely toasty warm, and held up really well to all the use this winter!
Okay, I'm a little peeved right now. Apparently when we did the clean springing & cleaned the closet out? Yeah, husband threw out most of the games, except a couple that were worth keeping.
... He always throws things out. Ugh.
Aside from the two locations that they suggested, maybe some of the check cashing places in town? I know Cashland has DVDs, BluRays, and current gen video games. Maybe they'll get a lot in?
Beyond that, this isn't a bad buy if you have a ps3 or xbox 360. It has a list of the games it contains at the bottom, including Altered Beast.
Sorry to get your hopes up. :(
