This is a little bit sensationalist just yet imho...
If you look at it at a larger timeframe nothing much is happening...
1 Year:
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=1Y
Lokking back at two years the GBP is actually looking pretty good:
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=2Y
Imho, it's too early to call just yet, but I'm interested in seeing just how this will develop over the next week or so...
Easy answer: It didn't plunge.
Look at larger time-frames. It's a normal dip, there were many like it in the past, some worse than this.
It's the 10 year graph that really shows the impact of Brexit on how the pound tanked in 2016.
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=10Y
That said, on this larger scale this little blip this article is talking about still doesn't amount to a whole lot...
All the real damage has already been done way earlier, so I'll stay with my opinion for now, that this article doesn't really show anything relevant for the moment.
Actually, it's a phrase that's more commonly used in reference to the British:
See my post on reddit 2 years ago....
Addition: There's even a German book with that title: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Die-spinnen-die-Briten-Brexit/dp/3499632675

Oh great - the dumb shits can't even install a web server certificate correctly, let alone negotiate a successful EU withdrawal
It has been argued both ways that TTIP is more likely to be passed. Cameron has been pro TTIP, but other Conservatives have reservations:
Other European governments, notably France, have been reluctant to agree to TTIP:
Here's a great example of why we need food safety standards on stuff coming from India. If their drinking water can contain dangerous levels of arsenic, the water they use on crops surely can.
https://edition.cnn.com/2017/04/28/health/arsenic-water-pollution-cancer-india/index.html
Not saying we shouldn't trade food with them -- India is a big place, with probably lots of great agricultural operations. But big places are more likely to have bad parts, especially in countries with very poor rural communities.
The USA can only export beef to the EU which follows EU standards. This requires special farms and a different treatment of their animals than usual, which agriculture companies like to avoid. They rather want to export shit beef, which is full of hormones. The EU doesn't allow it, which makes companies producing shit beef angry. Now those companies are pressuring their politicians to make a deal with the UK, so that they can at least sell there their shit beef. If they are successful and they might, because the UK is in a much weaker position that the EU, then the UK won't get high quality meat anymore. They will get shit beef like the US Americans.

Another recommendation for Chris Grey's Blog. He does have a book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brexit-Unfolded-wanted-never-going/dp/1785906925/ref=sr_1_3?crid=HAI8PL0Q4OOM&keywords=brexit&qid=1667121370&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1Ljg0IiwicXNhIjoiNS40MiIsInFzcCI6IjQuODgifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=brexit%2Caps%2C73&sr=8-3
I'd recommend it based on the Author's blog, but have not read it.
Interesting question, if the CDU went full AfD like the Tories went full UKIP, if German public (and private) broadcasters went along with it. Especially with the Totschlagargument of a referendum. I fear the Hindenburg-Hitler alliance can still gain and secure power. In many countries. And the UK has fallen prey to this sort of alliance between reactionary, wealthy forces and fascism. It's also in line with Eco's checklist.
Most boxes are ticked by the Brexiter movement.
No, you're still wrong.
I've given you the wiki link to 'race' as well. Perhaps you should be looking that up in the dictionary?
From Cambridge dictionary
> a group, especially of people, with particular similar physical characteristics, who are considered as belonging to the same type, or the fact of belonging to such a group:
> a group of people who share the same language, history, characteristics, etc.:
> The British are an island race.
What's revisionist in what I said? There is a pretty well regarded book called How the Irish became White which explains the theory of how Irish became accepted by being bigger bastards to non-Europeans.
https://www.amazon.com/Irish-Became-White-Routledge-Classics/dp/0415963095
edited for clarity, brexit is about turning the UK into a one party authoritarian state.
it's not that different to the rise of the neo Tories 100 years ago

Hmm maybe you enlighten us I am yet to see any tangible Brexit benefits. -> I even had the fun read-through -> https://www.amazon.com/Brexit-Tangible-Benefits-UK-Leaves/dp/B08F65S3P5 Good laugh but that's about it. But Free Speech so why don't you speak up. or is someone stopping you?
I understand aoide12 and I definitely agree more democracy and transparency are always good things. However, the truth is that the house of lords does have more power than the EU commission. The commission are unelected beauracrats who have no decision making power, and who are chosen by officials who are elected. Think of them like the civil servants we have here. Also, you have made your argument seem tenuous by admitting that while the UK is not perfect, it's better than the EU.... I can confirm that thanks to FPTP and the house of lords, the UK is about as democratic as the EU - with one notable issue. Leaving will be such a destructive act, that we have to be absolutely positive that it'll get better in like 5 years, or it simply isn't worth it. I'm waiting for someone to prove to me that will happen before I vote brexit!
About why FPTP makes UK democracy super undemocratic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9rGX91rq5I
About how the European Commission is not unelected authority: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/13/is-the-eu-undemocratic-referendum-reality-check
Thanks once again for taking the time to give me your views aoide12 :)
if you take out "may not" after each sentences and replace "There may be" with "There will be"
You can see all the problems it sounds like

Solving the Y2K bug was an immense task. It involved the efforts of countless developers around the world, and if it wasn’t for their efforts, things could have gone very badly.
In comparison, Brexit will make this look like a walk in the park, as the UK attempts to untangle itself from 40 years of European integration. In the case of a no-deal scenario, it’ll have to build entire regulatory bodies from scratch, and figure out legislation surrounding everything from food imports, to aviation, to customs.
>>asset stripping undervalued British companies is bad. > Why is it bad though? Asking for a friend...
Ask the Finns how well they did with Microsoft purchasing Nokia.
"We all know how this story ended. Just two years later, Microsoft declared that it had written off the deal, laying off nearly 8,000 jobs in the process."
Oh look another offensive, stupid brexitard.
Why don't you post the usual fascist tropes now to save time later:
Then deny the public the ability to express their real opinion.

Don't be lazy, open google maps and see it for yourself. There is plenty of local roads crossing the border of EU vs Belarus and Ukraine.
Now please explain to me why the discussed principle is allowed for the EU but not for the UK. Do not avoid the question and tell me the difference. Because in Ireland the roads are better? Because there are more crossing points? Because EU can pick and choose its rules but others not?
I actually still find the tone here on Reddit quite relaxed, compared to other media. Like Twitter, or the Daily Express...
The fact that the tone often fluctuates between sarcasm and schadenfreude is perhaps also due to the tone that many Bexiters have taken towards "our" EU. Including comparisons with the Soviet Union.

If my wife (if I had one) would tell me a hundred times that she would be so much better off without me, I would probably comment bittersweetly on her fall, instead of wishing her all the best.

Contrary to popular belief, (most) ministers are very smart people, and with all the PHD's writing the impact assessments, they are also well-informed. When they went ahead with this Brexit thing, they knew it would be a total shit-show. If we're going to mention JRM, a reminder (if you didn't already know), his father literally wrote the book on disaster capitalism.

Everything looks like a big swing when you put it on week or day graph.
I've seen close to a 100 posts like this since the brexit referendum.. And even though the pound definitely dropped big time in 2016, every other variation has been just that.. A variation. I wouldn't say the pound has been stable since 2017, but it's not like it has continued to plunge. It's still more or less the same it was 3 years ago.
Also, I don't know if it was you that downvoted me, but just downvoting because I don't go along with the circlejerk is kinda childish.
>Check the 10Y chart, and you'll see Sterling's stronger against the Euro today than it was in 2011, when Brexit wasn't considered remotely likely.
Your source only shows the 1 year at Max, and that shows a weaker pound to the Euro. You know smaller GBP/EURO is worse, right?
Is it a coincidence you talked about 3,5 years instead of 5? I guess not: https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=5Y
> But you’re not allowed to say that here.. you’re only allowed to meme and circlejerk.
it´s getting a little out of hand. i like a good meme any day, but if we go the same route as brexiteers in looking at the world around us we become the "enemy" (of reason).

btw the relation to the euro is less impactfull in my opinion than the relation to the usd.
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=USD&view=10Y
if you look at this chart you really see a consistent and heavy drop in 2016 that hasnt recovered. the minor fluctuations dont matter except for traders, but the fact that the pound essentially went from the 1.55 to the 1.25 benchmark is a heavy blow to an import market like the uk. if they cant source from europe due to trade barriers, they need to source from somewhere else. but even that has become more expensive.
Well, look at the wider picture, since the brexit farce started: https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=5Y
>This got me thinking.
Quite out of practice, weren't you?
>There are probably rules against putting political figures and symbols on national Euro coins.
There aren't.
>That must be why all of the Euro coins and notes just have pictures of bridges and buildings on them. It would make sense.
So, I take it you've never seen a Euro coin...

Useless pound drop post again. Just a small correction. Its still higher than a week ago.
Surging? Look at this chart: https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=5Y
See how high the pound used to be before 2016.
it's hovered between 1.14 and 1.06 in the last year which is a difference of 5%.
In fact, you could say that it, with peaks and troughs, is at the same level as it was ten years ago.
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=10Y
So what do you make of that? Hooray what?
USD-THB floating between 30-36
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=USD&to=THB&view=5Y
Brexit is our reason, the reason for US being a bit lower (a bit) is (most likely) Trump trade war
We could have a new Referendum, not on whether to leave the EU, but on whether we should cancel the result of the last referendum.
Boris wants this because he and nice bum boys club will make millions at the cost of every other person in the country, even at the cost of GBP (good old offshore tax havens), by January, probably before; the Pound will breach below the Euro.
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=1W
Yes they are indeed forecasts. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong. They are better then ignorance though. You again fail the sniff test. You list some of the dire (and frankly silly) leave predictions made but they omit that the other side made some equally dire and silly predictions.
These are forecasts based on data carried out by the IMF and the UK government independently. The results are very similar. So we should listen to your shouting over those predictions based on data, evidence, and expertise. I think not. I cannot guarantee you they will not be perfect but they are better than what you can and always will be able to provide which is just bluster thus far and bad information.
FYI the IMF never said 500,000 jobs lost. They said it would hurt growth and since 2016 UK has gone from near the top of the OECD states in growth to the bottom since then. Just as they "predicted". Here you go, some real data for you again. https://data.oecd.org/gdp/real-gdp-forecast.htm
As for your EURO point. it is starting to seem a little silly now like you are drinking the cool aid but not checking any evidence. Again here is some evidence. The Euro is on path to parity with the pound. That is a massive drop my friend, just as those wild predictions stated. https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=5Y
So here is Euro data, growth data, and we have the job announcements from the city firms that say it is due to Brexit but all you have is.... It is just predictions.
I repeat, it is nit problematic you are in denial to me or others, it is said you are in it to yourself and you think that your knowledge can outdo the predictions of the IMF and the government when the IMF have nailed their Brexit predictions thus far.
FYI - I think the vote should be honored and we should leave but we should not deny the facts or consequences or in any way lead to magical thinkers like yourself.
It was a nightmare indeed!
But if you look at actual numbers, the nightmare was for the Pound Sterling, not for the Euro - but then you don't seem to care much about facts, do you!
https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=EUR&view=5Y
This is sensible advice and I'll add a couple of thoughts.

Just for your reference. Here is a screenshot of the election results in 1933 in Germany. They did not have a majority. Other parties combined had way more votes...
I do not think that the British nor the English will go down that facist path as far as we Germans did. At least i hope they will stop a little short of that. GL everyone!
Watch the Andrew Neil grilling of Nicola Sturgeon and watch the SNP's case fall apart spectrally on indy 2 and joining the EU.

The BBC had a full spectrum (web, radio and TV) segment last week where they promoted their 'Brexit Jargon Busting' feature - to have to do this so close to the end of the two year Art. 50 cutoff isn't reassuring in any way.
>that no-deal creates a huge legal vacuum without any deals and no smooth transition
It's been posted in this sub, but the letter a number of major food retailers sent today to the UK government warning of empty shelves where fresh produce sits if we crash out no deal was lead item on the main BBC news prog at 18:00 - they did their usual 'vox pop' and interviewed 3 people on the streets somewhere.
One person said it was a sensible warning for the companies to send it, one mentioned the issue of not importing food and eating local/seasonal may not be bad - the last person, here's the quote:
"It's purely scaremongering. It will do the country good to go without for a little while. Make them appreciate what they had."
iPlayer link (Prob UK only and will expire at 18:30 GMT tomorrow) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0c01f5m/bbc-news-at-six-28012019 - skip to the 3 minute mark.
This is deeply worrying that some seem so cavalier in all of this.

Sorry but, they’re not the same. They have similar elements but are different.
Fintan O'Toole makes a decent point in Heroic Failure - that Brexit is only secondarily about the EU, and is primarily a response to a crisis in English national identity. In other circumstances, the antagonist identified might be different (the old reliable French, or immigrants of whatever background) but the underlying cause would remain.
He suggests that misidentifying the real issue was and remains the reason why Remainers' arguments don't gain traction with Brexit-supporting voters. He hints that a solution may lie in reanimating the dying Welfare State of the 60s and remodelling the constitutional framework of the UK to allow English nationalism a healthy form of expression.
But the book was published in 2018 before Johnson got his 80-seat majority for Getting Brexit Done. If there was ever a chance to try out O'Toole's suggestions, it may be too late now.
The EU’s chief negotiator found his UK counterparts bizarrely unfocused during the long haul to fix a Brexit deal – and believes they still don’t know what they’ve done
>When negotiations opened, the media made much of a photo of Barnier sitting with a file full of papers on the table in front of him while David Davis had nothing at all. The reality was far worse. Barnier was astounded by Davis’s “nonchalant” approach: “As is always the case with him we rarely get into the substance of things,” he writes about one subsequent encounter.

>Even if Britain fell and became a puppet state ally, America could have very easily invaded Britain and any one of its numerous islands, then used it as a staging point. That's how they fought the Japanese. Island hopping.
You've never been to Britain I assume? Try reading up on the logistics involved in the Normandy landings and the subsequent land campaign into Germany. This book about Eisenhower is a good start. The Japanese weren't that skilled in their submarine warfare, something the Germans got the hang of pretty well. Without the Royal Navy, the US Navy could have never crossed the Atlantic in big enough numbers to invade anything firmly held by Germany.
Yes, this.
I don't think EU would want UK back. It's not personal, it's not payback, but we spent too many years trying in vain to defend EU against Farage remote-from-facts nonsense. Then after the vote, we had to prepare for Brexit, BrexitS actually, plans A, B, C because the whole thing was unprecedented, unprepared and unpredictable, whilst re-explaining basic international laws to those in need (A good starter, Boris). We're just exhausted. We deserve holidays at this point, decades' worth of holidays.
I googled for "tangible benefits of brexit". A few articles from 2017/2018 spouting nonsense. More recent articles which don't actually describe any tangible benefits.
