"Generally, the gun violence is retaliatory. So, it’s people who are kind of engaged in these ongoing arguments either over music or social media, and the availability of guns makes those kind of arguments deadly," she said."
Which is a way of saying, "yeah, there's violence, but it's mostly in three neighborhoods, and none of those are in the Nextdoor.com groups doing the most crying about it."
Good for her.
You could try a climbing gym if you’re up to learn. Bouldering requires very little gear. Progression in Chapel Hill has a Groupon for two weeks.
>Do you guys think it's worth reporting to the police?
When you see the same open air drug markets, the same questionable massage and gambling houses, etc for 20+ years just as a citizen driving around going about your business, you can bet the cops who drive around neighborhoods every day know what's going on lots better than you do.
This one is so open about what they do they have a Groupon page.

>but you don't think that the relatively extreme lows (forecasting a low of 9 degrees Sunday) will be sufficient to overcome the relatively high soil temps?
No, not when the snow is actually falling. The soil temperature takes far more time to change than the ambient air temperature. The lowest temperature that is projected during the actual snowfall period is approximately 27 degrees. Between now and the beginning of the snowfall event, the ambient temperature is not projected to fall below freezing either. The soil temperature will cool down after the unusual 60 degree weather we had yesterday, but not enough to get below 32 degrees even on the surface, and the top 3-5 inches of soil typically lag the ambient air by 3-6 hours (meaning you'd need the temperature to be below freezing for atleast 3-6 hours straight for the top few inches of soil to drop to 32 degrees or lower, and even then the deeper soil would still be much warmer). Whatever does accumulate WILL stick around for a couple days though due to the lower temps on Sunday.
If this event was taking place in February, totally different story.
Buy a 50 mile antenna from Amazon or BestBuy: I have this one and depending on the TV I hook it to I get between 20 and 35 channels, local news, NFL, works well.
It's called Durham: A Self Portrait, by Dr Steven Channing. You can watch it on Tubi or buy it on Amazon.
Durham doesn't really have any electronic supply parts houses anymore. But, the good news is 5 of those are only $6.89 on Amazon. You'll spend more in gas trying to find one in Raleigh. Before you order pay attention to whether it's soldered in or crimped in and plan to replace accordingly.
Edit - You could try D&L Appliance in Durham, but you'll likely spend more than ordering online.
I'm not sure this NextDoor post will be visible but the sister of the biker is looking for information about the vehicle involved. You might have information she needs.
Update: there's a long thread about this dog on Nextdoor from a sighting last night. It looks like it is one of the hybrid wolf-dogs and that there are folks actively tracking it. Contact Kelly hicks (336) 686-1425 to report a sighting. https://nextdoor.com/p/wgNCQwrGMBRQ?utm\_source=share&extras=MTg4ODI5MjI%3D
I’m sure you have, but if you didn’t post to Pawboost I would do so.
I’ve seen people mentioning the litter box, but also leave out some worn clothes of yours (that smell like you) in a box on your porch area. I’ve heard that dragging your clothes around the area can help to spread your smell, but I have no idea about the validity of that.
It may be better to cut a hole in the side of a cardboard box / plastic bin and cover it for shelter.
If you have windows facing where you place those, try and face a 24/7 webcam with movement detection on it. Wyze makes a pretty cheap one.
I’d also walk through back alleys in your area where there may be dumpsters and shaking their favorite treat bag.
Finally, the old version of posting sheets of paper / posters on telephone polls will get traction with the non-social media audience, or a possible older couple that may have taken her in.
I can’t imagine how tough this is for you and hoping the best 💙

https://www.npr.org/2017/11/10/563242506/chinese-company-mobike-focuses-on-dockless-shared-bikes
This is from November of 2017. Mobike is a Limebike competitor, but I think they have very similar business models. There are US cities where Mobike, Limebike, and Spin all currently compete with each other.
I don't think these companies need to be profitable immediately, since they are mostly spending venture funds up front to build a system. I think the goal is to establish themselves as an essential part of a multi-modal public transit framework (why they call themselves a last-mile solution), and then convince state/local governments to pitch in some money to keep them operating.
I don't necessary see a problem with that model - there's no public transportation system in the country (including roads) that pays for itself with tolls or farebox recovery - we subsidize every method of transportation.
This is the best all around antenna: https://www.amazon.com/Antennas-Direct-ClearStream-Multi-directional-Adjustable/dp/B007RH5GZI/ref=sr_1_46?crid=8MK5DFHLV34B&keywords=antenna&qid=1661257592&sprefix=antenna%2Caps%2C98&sr=8-46&th=1
The "60" works for most people but if you want extra then get the "70" mile one.
For non-road things like trails or parks, Open Street Map can be a lot better than Google Maps. See here:

Here’s another one as well https://nextdoor.com/p/SHQQFs9f44H_?utm_source=share&extras=NTIzNTM4NjU%3D. I would recommend updating your email / message to the news outlets with this information. If you didn’t message WINK and those over Facebook, you may get more traction direct messaging there.
Additionally, if you didn’t already you may want to file a police report. If you’re not sure what specifically to report, call the non-emergency line. Just in case this is something that happens again beyond those who experienced it Friday.
Cool idea.

Cracked screens are easier to replace than you’d imagine on most phones. Here’s a replacement screen for your phone. There are plenty of youtube tutorials online to show you how. As long as you know how to work a screwdriver and have reasonably steady hands you should be fine.
Double check your model numbers etc. I would at least buy the screen in advance of taking it somewhere. There are kiosks in most malls and I saw someone mention the Compare one.

Please, you don't have to take our word for this - just do a Google search - literally everything advises you NOT to do this because it's less safe.
The problem isn't that it might make another driver "uncomfortable" but that it makes the highway less safe for everyone: https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/why-it-isnt-safe-to-flash-hazard-lights-while-driving-in-the-rain-2/432626

That's nice that your employer changed their mind about you having to use PTO if the power/internet goes out. I was taken aback when I read your original post earlier today, but makes sense since they're not used to this type of weather.
As far as storm prep - just charge up your batteries, make sure you have plenty of food, flashlights/battery-powered lamps(these solar-powered lightbulbs are a game changer, you can just turn them on and hang them in your normal lamps if the power goes out), water, secure stuff outside like patio furniture/bird feeders. This storm doesn't look too bad for us, but it'll be lots of rain and some wind.
Same way the postal inspectors do it. With an inspection scope:
Cut a pinhole somewhere in the box, stick a camera in to peak, and put a generic looking shipping sticker over it
We have three Veken Automatic Cat/Dog Feeders in black available, plus batteries and cables.
Happy to sell them for $20 each or all three for $50. We've had them for around a year and they're in great condition, the only reason we're getting rid of them is that we needed one that told us how much each cat has eaten.
I've tried multiple antennas over the years, the only one that has been able to reliably receive channels 11 and 17 is this one which I have mounted to my roof about 25 feet off the ground.
Our front yard is almost full shade and is mostly landscaping, but the small "grassy" area is actually Dwarf Lillygrass (amazon). Doesn't need to be mowed and grows about 2-3 inches. It's also an evergreen so it won't die out in the winter.
I had it mounted on the roof, about 25 feet above the ground. I bought this one instead and it picks up all of the channels with no problem.
I'm in northwest Durham, near the 85/15/501 split. I've been using this one for a few years and it picks up every available local station. I can even pick up some stations out of Greensboro if I point it to the west. I have it mounted on my roof about 25 feet off the ground, pointed to the transmitters southeast of Raleigh.
I strongly recommend the book "Gun's Don't Kill People (and other myths about gun control". It takes down every argument against gun control that I've heard in the past forty years...

Giving away a desk (this one) since I'm moving and don't have space for it. It's in pretty good shape although it does have an adhesive mouse pad on it and I'm not sure if that will come off nicely or not. Pickup near downtown!
Advion gel bait is good for inside the house. Just follow the instructions and put it in the areas that you see roaches. Cy-kick CS is what I spray around the outside of the house a couple of times per year. Make sure to get near the doorways, windows, crawlspace vents where the roaches might come in from the outside.
look into getting an at home water testing kit. ive found one on amazon that tests for many parameters including sulfide here. also contact your landlord and the city about the issue, they may know what’s going on (but dont take their word for it if they assure you it’s fine). if ur lucky, it will just be new water smelling different to you, but better safe than sorry. I’d buy a few jugs of drinking water at the grocery store in the meantime just to be safe

I was skeptical until I saw this publication. Thought it was going to be anti-soviet nonsense. Can’t wait to see this!
I don't trust pest control companies - they make money each time they get called out to do a job so their incentive is to continue to receive calls. Because of this, they tend to dilute the pesticides they spray around houses/apartments.
Your next option is to DIY pest control. I've had great luck with Advion gel for cockroaches. Just read the instructions and reapply as necessary.
Cykick-CS is another good pesticide. I use that one around the outside of the house - around doors and windows where bugs may try to get in.
Look on Amazon for "magnetic screen doors". Bunch of different styles and sizes. I use one on my back garage door to let the dogs go in and out into the backyard when I'm screwing around out there.
We use a "thermal door curtain" on the living room door year round. We open it up in the morning and have it open pretty much all day as the dog door.

I've had bad experiences with multiple local pest companies. They all want you to get on some sort of plan whether its 30/90/120 day intervals etc and if you don't, they'll just treat your place with diluted pesticides that are only effective for a few weeks at most, forcing you to call them back for additional treatments.
An alternate option is to do it yourself. This stuff works wonders for roaches and you can mix it to be however strong you need - just make sure to read the directions. Pick up a pump sprayer from Home Depot and you've got the same setup that the exterminators use.
I’m assuming they are referring to the cord lying on the walkway.
Would they feel better if you used one of these?
The book I read about it does say there were slaves on the plantation, and the author even tries to trace the family's slaves after the civil war...if I remember correctly it's not strictly documented but the author makes some compelling arguments as to who the slaves and their descendants were.
This is the book that mentions the dam: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0557542456/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I bought it because 1) I live near there and love local history and 2) have been taking walks in duke forest for like 27 years
I have one of these and our long haired cat loves it. It doesn't pull as much as a fulminator. As a bonus it also gets cat hair off your clothes. It's very gentle. Also cheap. I bought ours at Phydeaux. https://www.chewy.com/kong-cat-zoomgroom-multi-use-brush/dp/45801
Duke Forest / New Hope Creek has many nice trails. Crowded would be seeing more than a couple of people/couples in your time there.

Second this recommendation -- meetup.com is great and there are a lot of social groups in the Triangle. I've used it mostly for sports meetups but there's plenty to pick from.
www.parkrun.com is also a neat org, free timed 5K run every Saturday morning.
Yes! I get a push that tells me it's trash vs trash plus recycling (hell if I remembered before, we just copied the neighbors or guessed). And it has contact sections and report sections. I've found it worth it for the trash and yard waste reminders alone, but I've contacted the city through it too.

Roger that! First step is figuring out what your budget is as well as preferred offer structure. Check out the following purchase and milestone example on a $275k purchase, no money down. In this hypothetical scenario, the max out-of-pocket at any given point in the transaction is $3,800 and after saving a month of housing expense, buyer will have $619.58 more in their bank account than they did before they purchased.

Evansville a better comparison?
Evansville is just as hot as Durham. But Durham is still muggier.
I don't check reddit for three days and I miss a question I can actually answer!
When my cousins moved here I got them this book: https://www.amazon.com/Timber-Vegetable-Gardening-Southeast-Regional/dp/1604693711
I has all the basics you need plus more advanced stuff and is geared for this region. Timber Press is a GREAT publisher and you can check out their other books too!
Also: do buy plants your first year. Starting from seed is awesome but it does introduce another failure point that you don't need your first year.
Good luck! Happy gardening!

I have to tell you though, after about 18 years of using HDTV antennas in three different Durham neighborhoods, it's sorcery trying to get the right one that will lock in UHF/VHF. Everyone's situation is different. Everyone's signal is different. The one above might not have worked in a previous residence. Get something that can be returned easily.
I've been using one of these for 10+ years. I bought a 5 foot mast and attached it to an old directtv satellite dish mount that was already on my roof. It's pointed southeast towards the main transmitters in Garner, I used TV fool to find the direction and just used a compass to point the antenna the right way. I pick up all of the stations in beautiful HD - ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS, CW, etc, about 65 channels total. The signal never goes out, even in strong storms. My house is located northwest of downtown, near the 85 and 15/501 split.
If you have access to crushed ice, you can make your own with Coca-cola and a couple of squirts of Torani cherry syrup (around $10 for 25.4 oz/750 ml from Amazon). I think you’ll realize some cost savings plus the chore of having to drive somewhere to get one.

>but they are asking for a large sum as a termination fee which I would like to avoid
-That might be your best bet, I think it may be like three months rent, depending on your lease. The rub is, you're likely to encounter some sort of similar issues with other apartments around here. Unless you pay up the nose to live at Old Bull Apartments (which seem to be the best overall)
I live in South Durham, and have a pair of low profile earmuffs like these, ready to put on. You're going to be dealing with noise no matter what, when you're in apartments. FWIW, the rail lines off of Hwy 55 and South Miami don't have much traffic; relative to other areas in Durham, like downtown. Maybe like twice a day or so when trains roll by; it's not constant enough where it's super noticeable, IMO.
This has always been a controversial opinion of mine, but Reddit is always a good chance to ask. I have never minded feeding squirrels. I keep a 10lb feeder, and the fifty or so birds that are here every day almost definitely outpace the squirrels that hang around.
Also, a relevant side note, consider getting a big feeder! Like this one from Amazon. Local stores have them in the spring and summer, but not right now. I've noticed over the years that feeders which opt for something like four holes usually don't have that much activity. This one can support about ten cooperative winged friends at the same time. During feeding hours of the day, there'll be upwards of thirty birds at any given time, hanging out in trees, waiting their turn. Even more in the winter when food is scarce. I've even had a resident woodpecker be a regular guest, which would be excluded by the Squirrel Busters weight limit.
My two cents! I've always wanted to hear the public's reason for squirrel exclusion.
I have a Turkish lamp. I switched out the bulb.

A quick google search will show you some of the fatal pedestrian train accidents in Durham over the years. Buy yourself some earmuffs to block out the sound. When you live in an apartment, you have to do deal with loud noises all the time. Not to mention the other "loud noises" that people in certain neighborhoods hear very often in this town.
Another thing you could get into is Disc Golf. If you’ve never played, it’s golf located in public parks where there is 99% of the time no fee to play. All you need to do is purchase a starter set of discs and find a park.
If it’s something you’re interested in, my friends are interested in trying it out as well and I can loan you some discs for a round if you would like to join. We’re early 30’s / late 20’s people if that makes any difference.
If you haven’t gone around downtown yet, I would also recommend taking a stroll around just to see the different shops and restaurants just to get out and see things. As someone else mentioned there is a street close off going on soon where you can freely walk the streets.
There’s also tons of craft breweries around if you’re into that. Let me know if you have any questions, and welcome!
Very cool. I've got a reprint of a Sears 1908 catalog and it's fascinating to look at Sears as the Amazon of it's day. They had everything and Sears played a major role in racial equality since minorities could mail order things from Sears that local white owned businesses might not offer them.
