This is my second attempt. I know it isn't a perfect polish job, but you guys give me the courage to post!!!
I have tried so many products to kick this habit, from going to physical nail salons, ColorStreet, at home gel kits, polishes galore, gloves, sitting on my hands... you name it.
I find that the dip lasts the longest and works the best for me. (It stays put, therefore I am not likely to pick). I am using a basic kit from Amazon. It takes some practice, but the results are well worth it. I started by watching YouTube tutorials and videos. I use it on my natural nails and soak off when I am ready for a change in color. PLEASE DO NOT PICK OFF!!! It will damage your nail bed. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MPFBWBK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Edit: grammar
I've been biting my fecking nails for 25 years and only recently have been able to get some progress. It's been about three months and I still slip occasionally but what's been really helpful is this .
It goes on invisibly, doesn't smell and tastes like sour ass strong enough to make you notice what you're doing. No matter what you do though you're going to start having to make conscience decisions to stop when catch yourself. Hope this helps, rooting for ya.
I know the pain, skin picking was one of my biggest issues back when my nails were longer. A couple things I recommend:
Lotion or some other moisturizer - it can really help keep your skin smooth so it's harder to pick at in the first place. Lots of other people on this sub tend to suggest this and have some ideas for what to use. I see Burt's Bees cuticle cream (amazon link) pretty often on other posts, so maybe give that a shot.
Fidget object - often I find that I start picking at my fingers when I'm nervous or need to keep my hands busy and having something to toy with seriously helps. Often I'll use a ribbon, drum my fingernails on a surface, mess with my hair, or clasp and un-clasp my watch. Anything to keep my hands busy. I recently pre-ordered the highly anticipated fidget cube that many people have been watching on this sub and am hoping for the best.
Keep your nails short - This one is hard for me because I like to keep my nails longer as (a) it lets me use them, (b) acts as positive reinforcement, (c) is necessary if they're ever going to reach a nice shape again, and (d) is nice for drumming on my phone or desk, but by keeping them shorter, it makes it very difficult to pick at the skin or other nails when they start to flake/chip.
That's all I've got. I hope this is in anyway helpful to you or others who have the same problem. Best of luck!
I actually made my own cuticle oil pens. A mix of jojoba and vitamin e oil. I bought the pens from Amazon
Since these are so handy I kept them everywhere - my nightstand, end table by the couch, my desk, in the kitchen, purse, any other place you can think of. The key for me was to not be caught without the cuticle oil pen within arms reach at any time.
Can’t take credit for this - I saw Simply Nailogical’s video on how to care for your nails. She is pretty knowledgeable.

"sensory chew" or "chew necklace" on amazon will show you lots of chew items designed for older kids and adults! There are lots of cute crystal shaped pendants, and these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LFB4XJF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) inconspicuous ones that I ordered for myself and love (they can handle a serious bite)!
I have been worse than ever lately and and feel like I reached code red. I bought these little silicon finger tips a few weeks ago and I carry them with me and apply when I just can’t stop. It has been working perfectly for a week. My hands are healing and I feel like it’s a tool that will continue to work. If I get going on a thumb, I just put the tip on that thumb and keep it there as long as it takes, whether 2 hours or 2 days. If i start on another finger, I do the same thing. I had them in half my fingers all weekend and then I was good for several days. Then I needed one today as soon as I got home and it saved me from going there.
Here is a link to the item in Amazon; Gel Finger Cots, Finger Protector Support(14 PCS) New Material Finger Sleeves Great for Trigger Finger, Hand Eczema, Finger Cracking, Finger Arthritis. (Finger cots)
I wrote Slightly Robot to help myself with this problem. The app is pretty basic. You can press a button to record how many times you do it per day. It doesn't have all the graphs and stuff Tickmate does, but you can hook it up to certain wearables for automatic tracking. Android only at the moment, but we're planning to release an iOS version in a few weeks.
Since this is a form of self harm, distracting yourself could be best. Many recommend meditating, however it's difficult to get the hang of it, so here is an app that can help: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.org.stem4.calmharm I hope things get better for you. Try not to go to bed angry ♥️
Thanks so much for the report! I will dig right into that bug report. You're saying it crashes when you try to view the history of an entry with a photo attached? Please PM me any other details you think might be relevant.
By the way I never thought people would willingly (and so quickly!) want to share their photos. Would a share button right from the app be something you'd want? I didn't want to freak people out at the prospect of their stuff not being private.
EDIT : Do me a favor, when that happens can you hit the "Report" button? That does actually send useful information back to me so I can see what's happening. I believe that it is an OutOfMemory error, but at the moment I cannot recreate it on my device.
EDIT : Link to the app for people that don't know what we're talking about ;)
I think they help. I like these gently spiky rings https://www.amazon.com/Spiky-Sensory-Finger-Rings-Pack/dp/B06XKD9WCK/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=monkey+spike+ring&qid=1622231739&sr=8-1 because the texture of rolling them up and down my fingers is so nice. It's sort of like an itch being scratched but its also cooling.
I used to have a piece of velvet ribbon that I fidgeted with, I really like that texture too.
I had a fidget ring (the one with the inset spin) but I found that the sensory experience wasn't enough for me.
My kit is: small crystal file, nippers, cuticle oil pen, and spiky ring.
I had to use Stop The Bite and it was worth it, but it didn't feel worth it at the time.
For 6 months I tasted almost nothing but Stop the Bite. When I showered, it would wash off my nails and into my mouth. Gross. My husband will tell you that during that time, if he kissed me, it tasted like Stop the Bite.
What works best for me as far as relapse are constant moisturizing--dry skin makes me want to pick/bite, and a weekly manicure routine.
Another thing: if you do your own nails, try cleaning up your cuticles and skin with acetone and a small brush! This is something I've learned in the past year, that the sensation of polish on my skin and directly in contact with my cuticles makes me want to pick/bite, too. Follow through with an oil and/or hand cream.
Amazon Although I did see that says but to be used for children under 3, so its only an option if nothing else works until then...
Aww, shucks! I never imagined anyone say that about my nails! Thanks!
Just replied above. Reposted below. best of luck! Hopefully this method works out for you!

The idea of meditation isn't to get your brain to stop, it's to be aware of it. To acknowledge that a thought has entered your brain, and then let it go. No judging, no obsessing, just being. Focusing on breathing in and out is key. It's all about mindfulness.
You might check out the book 10% Happier by Dan Harris, good intro to meditation, what it can do and his journey with it. He also has a podcast and app to help. I've heard lots of good things about the Headspace app as well.
I'm also off to order a fidget cube! Sounds super helpful. :)
Doing my cuticles twice a week and keeping my nails filed neatly was my #1 help
Thisstuff with a little wooden cuticle pusher is a godsend.
Good luck:)
you could try something like Stop Deterrent Nail Polish
Remember that if something is worth doing, it's worth doing poorly. If you have access to a gym, it's better to go once a week than never. Its better to go for 25 minutes than not at all. If you don't have access to a gym, it's better to go for a 10-15 minute walk than to sit on the couch browsing reddit. If you can't bring yourself to go out, it's better to do some stretching and mobility exercises than doing nothing. You can get a little feeling of accomplishment just from doing some stretching.
You need to focus on getting your mental health to a better place. Can you work with your doctor to try a different medication? Can you speak with a therapist/counselor? A lot of places are offering virtual appointments, which is easier to fit in among your work schedule than physically going to an office.
Lastly, you have open wounds here that you need to care for like any other wound. Wash with warm water and gentle soap, and maybe cover your toes with hydrocolloid band-aids until they heal. Those j&j band-aids are really good, and they come in various shapes and sizes. They are expensive but worth it. Once the wounds are basically closed, put a soothing lotion (like one advertised for excema) on your feet, and sleep with socks. I basically wear socks all the time except when I am in the shower, to keep from picking at my toes when my hands are idle. Socks are key. For your hands, same lotion, and just keep them moisturized all the time.
thank you :) I tried acrylics a few times (but not for years now) and hated them! my nails would be extra awful for weeks after removing them. I don't mind my short nails, except for the fact that they are painful and swollen/bleeding from biting. I think if my nails don't get stronger, the best thing for me would be to keep them short (from filing not biting), but also painted to prevent biting/picking. usually I don't paint them when they are short, because it looks embarrassingly bad, but we'll see!
one of my least favorite things is washing my hair, because I have very dry skin on my head, and scratching it off with wet nails is awful! I got these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DTVM9JV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 yesterday, and it's life changing!
Wanted to post something that I recently started that seems to have helped (so far!) I found this while shopping amazon for some unrelated products. I work in a bar, and to clean the glasses we use some really heavy-duty anti-bacterial stuff, so my cuticles and hands get really dry and then I pick / bite at them. I like a lot of Burt's Bees products, and they're all natural/no animal testing so I figured why not try it out.
The product is more like a balm-- I swirl my finger in it and then rub it into my nails and cuticles. It smells absolutely divine, like lemon cakes, but it doesn't really taste great. I started rubbing this stuff into my nails whenever I get the urge to bite/pick and have slowly started to replace the habit with that. I'm not sure if this'll work in the long run, but I already feel the urge to bite and pick lessening. I've been a nail biter and mild dermotillomaniac for as long as I can remember... so that's a huge step for me.
Hope this helps someone! :)
I bought this one off of Amazon. It's a bit expensive, but it has helped me stop biting.
Moisturizing obsessively is the first step, at least for me in a dry climate. I have a cuticle trimmer/pusher and a nail buffer. I gently push my cuticles back (gently) and flip it around and use the forked end to trim the cuticle (do not do this on dry cuticles, you’ll make yourself bleed). Then I use a nail buffer and buff the ridges/that weird layer near my cuticles off. I also swear by this stuff called Nail Magic I got on Amazon. I trim my cuticles about once a week or once every two weeks.
Below are the types of cuticle trimmers and the nail magic stuff.
Came shaped like this! Kiss GelFantasy nails in color "Whatever" medium length. Can get from Target or CVS, etc
Edit to add link to Amazon: Kiss Nails GEL FANTASY"KGN10" (WHATEVER) Medium Design Nails w/Adhesive Tabs & Glue
Hi! I LOVE the beetles brand on Amazon. They are pretty inexpensive and sell their gel polish in sets so you can start a nice sized collection. It also comes with a foundation, top coat, and matte top coat.
I also find the Aimeli brand to work very well and last a while.
The only other brand I have are from Modelones, which had great reviews, but that brand always peeled off a lot sooner than the two above, like in a day or two.
If you can't afford to see a psychologist to help you with the habit, you can try going through a book on BFRB like https://www.amazon.com/Overcoming-Body-Focused-Repetitive-Behaviors-Comprehensive/dp/1684033640. That can help you understand why the impulse happens and different ways to overcome it.
A few things I do...
All this is easier said than done and I am still struggling. But good luck and welcome!
🚨OP only has two posts on Reddit and they’re both for this. They’re just tryna take your money for something that probably won’t be effective.
Also, you can get these exact things for like a third of the cost off Amazon
About two years ago, my hands were looking like yours. I got this gel nail kit and that started to help the the most. If you’re a guy just use clear gel polish unless you like the colors that cool too! This keeps them stronger and harder to pick at. For the cuticles get cuticle oil pens, this just helps it look nicer and brushing it on keeps your hands busy.
Also also invest in fidget toys. Ones you can keep in your purse or pocket or on your keychain. Keep your hands busy in other ways. gel nail kit, neutral colors
It doesn’t have to be this exact stuff I linked but get the cheep stuff just to help kick the habit.
Also if you have a chewing or oral fixation, always have gum around that helps too.
Could you try wearing silicone finger tip? Like this https://www.amazon.com.au/Anti-Slip-Reusable-Fingertip-Protector-Collating/dp/B09GL32NGD/
If the nail polish issue is due to it chipping, use a gel polish.
tbh im very anxious about this and started doing my nails myself bc of it. it has been nice as a hobby tbh and the time dedicated makes me more conscious of not picking or ruining the mani
since you said you like acrylic, dip is super easy to apply yourself. beetles has a really cheap kit with everything you need (minus a buffing brush: this is optional but it made my application alot cleaner personally)
i have the same issue of picking with nipping tools and have completely stopped using them to help minimize it: i will use a cuticle bit for my efile or good old cuticle remover lotion and pusher
To keep under nails clean I use a nail brush, like the one linked. Cheap and easy. I leave it by the sink and use it whenever I wash my hand.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08PV14SLC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I've seen some ideas that other people who have a picking habit have done to redirect the urge.
Or other fidget toy. If he is showing other anxiety symptoms, might be good to have a talk with a psychologist to get more ideas.
I get a lot of satisfaction from picking apart the bits on this bike chain and key ring fidget
Thank you!! It is Orly in the shade Bare rose (And on top there is one layer of Nail whitener polish)
Also, I came across this on youtube the other day:
Through a lot of trial and error, and an increase in overall mindfulness.
I briefly tried the bitter nail polish stuff, but it kept getting onto my fingertips, which just made all the food I touched taste disgusting. Can't really condition your unwanted behavior when you're punished for doing everyday things, so I stopped that.
I tried a daily reminder app, which worked pretty well for several weeks, even though I had the occasional relapses. I didn't end up keeping up the habit, though.
I went on a lengthy vacation where I noticed I didn't bite my nails the whole time, and I was starting to believe that the reason why was because I wasn't at a computer, where I'm often idly sitting with my attention focused on other things. Even though I relapsed shortly after the vacation, having a moment where I knew I was capable since helped push me to improve.
I bought a glass nail file, similar to this one, which greatly helped me satisfy the occasional physical sensation of roughness, pointiness, or loose skin. It's durable AND easy to clean, so I can keep it in my pocket wherever I go.
I've been doing pretty well this last month.
Can’t see if it’s already been recommended but hydrocolloid bandages are a great help to me. They help with wound drainage and if applied properly can stay on through hand washing for multiple days.
These rings are making a big difference for me. The difference seems to be that I can fiddle with them on my fingers, which is a little uncomfortable and seems to take the place of picking. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08D3VSRFV?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details
I just posted these to another thread. These are very scratchy. I just got them and that's just how I would describe them....kind of painful but harmless.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08D3VSRFV?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details
I'm new to this community thought not new to the problems we face. I just ordered these because I saw them on a blog. In the past fidget toys have done nothing for me. But these spiky rings are different. They are a little bit uncomfortable to run your fingers through, which is good, and they kind of flatten your cuticle down if puffy damaged cuticles are an issue. This is the first time I've felt like I have any hope. If I'm at the computer or watching tv, I'm running one of these up and down my fingers.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08D3VSRFV?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details
I started consistently use fidget toys more. The one that works for me are these magnetic balls: https://www.amazon.com/222PCS-DIY-Original-Desktop-Magnet/dp/B0B5M7CCR3/ref=mp_s_a_1_20?crid=136G9XH2EEWGB&keywords=magnetic+balls&pscroll=1&qid=1656867831&sprefix=%2Caps%2C191&sr=8-20&wIndexMainSlot=31 Another brand of them are called buckyballs I think. The clacking sound of the magnets is nice and they feel malleable rubbing up against each other. So I can “pick” at them instead of my hands. I’m also going to therapy for my mental health problems, so that may also be helping. Those are the main changes I’ve made.
I have a kit from this brand ModelOnes: https://www.amazon.com/Modelones-Starter-ManicureTool-Rhinestone-Glitter/dp/B093FMZFYR
It took me a couple of tries to master the technique. But now I like the ritual of doing my nails (while watching Better Call Saul, ha) and it lasts for almost 2 weeks. Way cheaper than going to a nail salon too!
Omg I feel you! Okay so as they started growing I just really try to file the sides more narrow, on my really wide ones I’ve actually tried clipping the sides and that’s helped a ton - and helped ingrowns. ALSO you have to use this stuff - Sally Hansen 30003424000 Instant Cuticle Remover, 1 Fluid Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0046MK34G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9TJA5QHQJYYSKDH1BGYM - use this and then push back your cuticles, it literally dissolves the dead cuticle. my nail beds are actually much Further back than I realized because my cuticles were never in good health and were way over grown and dry - sticking to my nails
I got a fidget toy to keep my hands busy, helped a tonnnn - ONO Roller Jr Black - Silent... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097SVCQ11?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share . I also make sure to have a file and clippers with me everywhere I go so if I feel the urge to pick or bite I can scratch that itch with the proper tools. I am using the no bite nail polish by onyx (which is icky, and will make it so you can’t lick your fingers clean or floss your teeth like normal haha I’ve had to switch to the picks) and I’ve been using a keritan base coat for growth and keeping my nails painted a color!
I suggest a hand routine in the morning and any other time your cuticles/hands feel rough:
Your cuticles are really dry and hard so this will help soften them, the polish will keep them out of your mouth. Nice to go in for a manicure once and awhile too. You’re like 90% there to healthy hands so hopefully a little more care and you can post again in a week or two with progress. 🤝
I can’t find it in stores anymore, but I most recently found it on Amazon. This stuff seriously works.
I would normally recommend a dip nail polish that makes it impossible to bite and pick at your fingers, but if you can't use traditional nail polish, you could try something like this. My husband uses a matte nail polish similar to that to prevent biting, and it's not at all detectable.
You can also use nail tips like this if you want to cover your natural nail. I haven’t tried it but in theory it should work. You’d also need nail glue which you can get at the store. Yimart 500pcs/pack Stiletto False Nails Clear False Nails Oval Stiletto Sharp Full Nail tips Acrylic UV Gel Full Cover Nail Art Tips Decoration Nails Salon (Clear) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G13PPXT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_M29HXWQXKNJS44JV5TH8

My favorite lately has been this magnetic slider one - Airino Magnetic Pivot Slider . The clicky sensation from the magnet, esp when pushing it into moving from one to the next, has been a decent substitute for me.

When it dries you can't see it at all and it tastes horrific. You just dip your finger in so no painting either. The aftertaste that lingers is a real punishment.
I joined this sub some time ago. I def still struggle with the biting, but from time to time I remember these Worry Stones that someone here had suggested. It actually helps quite a bit if you can remember to use it. I am able to carry mine in my wallet.
I got one of those fidget cubes, it does help but my problem is remembering to take it with me. It’s fall enough to hold in your hand without being too noticeable, and has multiple different sensory bits. I’ll link the one I have below. Good luck! I’m 4 days in!!
You can try using a bitter clear nail polish like this one (it has a stronger bitter flavor than the other popular brand, Mavala, imo). You definitely need to communicate to her about nail biting - that it can transmit germs and make her get sick, that it's something we don't do in polite company, that big girls should try not to bite, and even that it's a form of self harm and she deserves to love and care for herself. Pay attention to who she is watching (you or your spouse) that she may be copying. If it's someone you're close with, ask them not to bite around her. Help her identify when she wants to bite and give her something else to occupy her hands (I like the play-doh suggestion). Maybe you can make it a fun game if she tells you she feels like biting and then doesn't? Like give her little prizes or awards? Make it something the two of you do together. If you use the bitter nail polish, make sure you're explaining to her that it's not punishment but that it'll help her by reminding her not to put her fingers in her mouth, while continuing with the praise and rewards when she doesn't. Have sweet tarts or juice instantly handy to help her get the bitter flavor out of her mouth.
Another tip - for that kind of damage, neosporin overnight will help tremendously. Get a piece of gauze loaded with neosporin over the top of your thumb and wrap around it with wound tape overnight or all day if you’re able to. ~36 hrs of that and it’s gone. I’m also in love with colloidal silver gel. Slather it on overnight and stuff is 50% better by morning. Works for hands, wounds, sunburns, acne, everything. This one is my favorite: Heritage Store Body Gel Salve, Colloidal Silver, 2 Ounce https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B009V11UQ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_43MPT2PRSSA19DPGNKXP
I’ve tried bandaids but they fall off or get gross easily, couldn’t pick stuff up, etc. I had one of these and tried it out this weekend. Going to pick up the set and see if it helps. The rubber helps with gripping which is nice. And easy to wash them when you wash your hands. rubber/gel finger condom thing.
Coach’s tape. Works for a lot of skin chaffing stuff and just good to have on hand. It’s a fabric that sticks to itself—great stuff. Here’s a picture https://www.amazon.com/14-Pack-Yards-Beige-Adhesive-Bandage/dp/B07TJQNMZT/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?adgrpid=53570244222&dchild=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwt-6LBhDlARIsAIPRQcLneNHvOyeOt-oG0Xc-zZZRzCfwZm2phuS4IH6SrLEfzEtFnk-z63UaAuSlEALw_wcB&hvadid=2746778068...
Maybe use Hard as Hoof cream during the day and oil at night instead? It does a great job on my husband's cuticles, and it's a heavier cream, so if you rub it on your cuticles then wipe your fingers, I don't think you'll have a problem with prints on anything.
It also lasts a bit longer as it's a heavier cream, so you won't have to reapply as often. Folks in r/longnaturalnails swear by the stuff.

Oh absolutely! This is the Sally Hansen one, it’s decently priced and small
You can also buy just the applicator pens and fill them yourself, you could put almond or jojoba oil in there. I’m going to try a pack of these now, I have some Solar Oil I never use because I don’t like the brush applicator
(Sorry for Amazon links)
i was a really bad nail biter, and was able to get my nail bed to lengthen & my hyponychium to reattach by:
- gently pushing back cuticles weekly, as well as using a nippy tool (tho be careful to not go overboard!!) to nip any loose skin that would later trigger me to repick them
- apply cuticle oil at least 1x daily, but aimed for more like 2-3x. i use a brush like this that i fill with jojoba oil (and theyre reusable if youre strong enough!) , and will also use this to clean under my nails! nothing harsh like your own nails or a tool that would dissuade the hyponychium
- use lotion after washing (esp with covid, i was at least 10 times a day) will help keep skin moisturized & not lead to dry or peeling skin that is rly nice to pick at lol
- if your nails break often (mine did at first rly bad), it kinda sucks, but filing down your nails shorter will make sure that they dont break, and especially down to your nailbed that will further put off the regrowth of it. (glass files are >>>>> emery boards)

overall it took ~a year of consistently doing all of this for me to notice a significant difference!
I use this thing, which admittedly is not cheap, but it lasts forever compared to the scrubby gloves I used to use which wore out pretty quickly. But I use it on my whole body.
A washcloth would work fine if it’s just your nails!

The only thing that has worked is an efile, I found a cheap one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08F54V71B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and looked up how to do a dry manicure with it. I only use the metal pieces, not the harsh sandpaper. An efile smooths down the skin, where a file kind of tears at the skin. Then I moisturize right after
I got gloves I wear at night with Curel Ultra Healing lotion and that made my skin much softer & smoother the first time. It doesn’t stop the underlying anxiety etc, but there is less to pick at.
Also, I have emery boards everywhere so that if I find a sharp nail or rough area, I can smooth it immediately.

If you watch simply nailogical's video on how to grow your nails she buys empty nail oil pens to fill them herself, you could try that
I just ordered myself some the other day - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075R6MDSK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I highly recommend buying these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DS7LX2K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 removing loose skin really helps me avoid picking.
My nails are super thin and damaged (been biting for 30+ years) I used 2-3 coats of Pink Armor base coat on my natural nails and/or under color polish and they feel much stronger.

Got this one off Amazon, love it!
Yes! I used the "Kiss" dip kit! You can get it at walmart or target! Here is what I'm talking about! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BZXRB24/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_i_yjKZFbJK5ATQA
Youtube has a bunch of tutorials :)
I am a life-long biter and your nails look almost exactly like mine usually do. Here's what has worked for me...get yourself a cuticle oil pen and put it on every time you have an urge to bite. I bought empty containers on Amazon and just filled them with oil myself.
I do this too. Fidget toys like these or a thumb ring that spins or has other moving parts are good, to mimic that snapping thumb motion. Otherwise it's the usual advice - file or care for them instead of peeling, keep the nails/cuticles moisturized, figure out when you are likely to do it and substitute the behavior with something else (like knitting when watching TV or EFT tapping when stressed at the computer). Good luck!
You can find it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-biting-ounces/dp/B0000YUXI0/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1542292009&sr=1-4&keywords=mavala%2Bstop&dpID=41TVkUE41OL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch&th=1

It's from switzerland so not sure it shows up in stores like walgreens.
Here they are. $6.50 USD on Amazon for 20! My coworkers call them my finger sweaters. :) I cut them with fabric scissors to make them shorter.
I am using a basic kit from Amazon. Link below. It takes some practice, but the results are well worth it. I started by watching YouTube territorials and videos. I use it right on my natural nail and soak off when I am ready for a change in color. DO NOT PICK OFF!!! It will damage your nail bed.

It’s for gel nails I think. I use the Sally Hansen. I got this one. LED UV Nail Lamp Light with Timer Auto-sensor J720 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G9D9TYQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OYDRDb7MX7EET It’s actually $13 and right now amazon has a 25% off coupon.
I am so impressed on how well it works. I dry for 60 seconds after each coat and don’t have any flaws.
I am about 6 months into stopping picking at my fingers, and I resolved to stop scraping dirt out from under my fingernails, and my nail beds have gotten a solid 2-3 mm of additional length from re-attachment. I bough a nail brush https://www.amazon.com/Tweezerman-Nail-Brush-Dual-Count/dp/B000JLFFGE and I use it dry to gently encourage the visible dirt out from under the free edge.
Something that has been really really important to me during this journey: https://www.myblisskiss.com/simply-pure-hydrating-oil-15-ml-dropper-bottle/
I will probably post a link to this every time I post progress, because it's just better than everything else I've tried (coconut oil, aveeno oatmeal lotion, egyptian magic skin cream, pure jojoba oil, an olive-oil based hair-and-nails oil formula). It has vitamin A, which seems to make a huge difference.
edited to add: the fabric is a patch I put on to stop the nail from splitting. because the nail had curved severely downward, when the tissue under the end of the nail started growing back, the nail is pushed to flatten out and really wants to split. :( I did it by dropping superglue on the nail, then using tweezers to lay the fabric down, then another drop of superglue to saturate the fabric. Once it was dry, I filed the edges of the fabric down so I wouldn't pick at it.
The glue is veterinary superglue, which is still the recommended cyanoacrylate adhesive, but a little more flexible than regular hardware store superglue https://www.amazon.com/3M-Vetbond-084-1469SB-Vetbond-Tissue-Adhesive-1469Sb/dp/B004C12Q46/
I used the same glue for the fabric patch and to protect the weakest preliminary cuticle in corner I used to bite most, and also to seal up a split in the side of the nail where the lateral tissue is also growing in and pushing on it.
I've found that the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook to be helpful. I did some of the exercises in that workbook on my own, but many of them I did in conjunction with my therapist. The first chapter has basic distress tolerance skills that gives a very structured way to handle distressing emotions in different situations and contexts. I'd honestly recommend doing any therapy exercises with a therapist, if you can afford it/have access.
The other book I have found helpful is The Worry Trap, another book I worked through with my therapist. I don't know if this would be appropriate for children, as it is more complex and relies on metaphors. But it might give you some ideas for techniques to cope with anxiety, if this even is an issue? I don't know. I just mentioned what worked for me with quitting and my anxiety has everything to do with my nail biting. Your son doesn't necessarily have an anxiety problem if he bites his nails. You know him best and it's awesome that you have taught him that emotions are ok and normal.

I ordered a kit with all your favorite things and wow! They're my favorite things now too!
You are now my Reddit bestie.
Here's the one I got.
This is my favorite so far! It's like a mix of a fidget cube and a Rubix cube. All the small cubes are attached, so you can flatten it out or reassemble it into a cube, over and over. It's hard to explain, but it's really neat. Also, the company that makes them has great customer service-they emailed me the day after mine was delivered, to see how I liked it. It was very sweet.
Hi Twin.... same history on the topic and age range. I've been on the hunt more gentle filing based that will remove the cuticle without me harming live skin. With quarantine right now, finger cots are a great way to keep yourself from picking, I ordered some on amazon. They help but not a long term cure if you're anything like me. Put on your fave hand cream or oil and then cots and continue with your day. Also, this has been a current saving grace for me. Cuticle Lab. Deborah Lippmann products are great for cuticle maintenance if you could swing the $. I haven't found a cheaper alt, but I really love the tool in this kit and the cuticle remover really works. I also really like this glass cuticle pusher . Good luck!
I purchased this clear nail polish from Amazon last month. You will never put your hands near your mouth again. This stuff is strong but works so SO well. Good luck!
I also tried a worry stone but it didn’t satisfy the craving. At first I don’t notice I’m picking my nails but as soon as I do I switch to the ring. It has an outer portion that spins and is very satisfying for some reason. There are a lot of rings for super cheap on Amazon.
I know what it's like to be unable to afford therapy, but if you can afford a book, I highly recommend the Self Esteem Workbook by Glenn R. Schiraldi. It's not a replacement for therapy, but it's a a scientifically-based self-help book aimed at dissecting thought distortions and undoing core beliefs. I did this with a friend last year and it was hard work, but I'm in a much better and more stable place now emotionally.
Since you're seeing a GP anyway, you may also want to mention that you're having a hard time quitting skin picking. This can be related to anxiety, OCD, and/or other mental disorders, and your doctor may be able to prescribe something to help. Your doctor may also be aware of resources in the area for people like you who need therapy but can't afford it.
On a personal level, even if you aren't in a place to believe it now, I want you to know that I don't think you deserve to be hurt, and I think you're valuable just by virtue of being a human being. I'm proud of you for being so honest and vulnerable with us, and I hope you're able to overcome some of the negative thought patterns that are leading you to self-harm. I hope you'll keep us updated with your progress ❤️
"Orly Cuticle Therapy Creme" was by far the best thing I ever found. It works basically overnight for me. It says its nails and cuticles, but it works wonders on the skin around the nail too.

I bought these
In retrospect I would re-order a small, and while the nude color blends, its light and seems to pick up stains (for lack of a better word) so I would probably do a pair of black or something
Good luck!
A ring fidget is good for discreetness. Perhaps a small stone? The place where you found the stone could help as a reminder or positive imagery to think about when you fidget with it.
Shameless plug, if you carry an Android phone I could recommend my "virtual worry stone" app, MyWorryStone (100% free no ads) as something easy to carry with you :)
I have always used Corn Huskers lotion. Old school but works great with just a little! This is what it looks like
It’s half this price at the store
I've been carrying this cuticle oil pen around with me and it's made an enormous difference. I find that if my cuticles are soft I have no urge to bite or pick at them.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DYMYY2G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_J5w2AbYYCHPMJ
I use clear nail polish on my nails to put a physical barrier there. I don't like the plastic texture of it. I use this this when I know I'm going to be stressing out: https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-Nail-Biting/dp/B0000YUXI0/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1522717374&sr=1-4&keywords=mavala
It works really well during finals. It usually takes only one application to remind me not to bite. In addition, I file regularly (once or twice a week) to keep the edges from splintering. I also use a lot of cuticle oil to keep my cuticles from getting dry. At night, I use a really thick hydrating cream to make my hands smoother. It all keeps me from picking at everything.
After 40 years of biting my nails and cuticles, I finally have it controlled. My solution has been to get a fingernail brush; nothing special, just tightly packed short synthetic bristles in a plastic grip. I use it with plain bar soap at the end of my shower when my cuticles have become fully hydrated and are easiest to exfoliate... and scrub. Initially, it can hurt.
Fair warning: brushing with soap will totally dry out the skin on your finger, and you MUST use a HEAVY DUTY lotion immediately after drying off. I recommend Palmer's Cocoa Butter, or (even better) Gold Bond Ultimate Diabetic's Dry Skin Relief.
On top of dealing with the physical problem, you have to address the psychological. I can't over-recommend "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg. It discusses a case of a lifelong biter, and how they overcome the issue by understanding the habit cycle and how to interrupt it.
I think when you say it has to end today you are not giving yourself permission to fail sometimes. Then the slip could lead to really feeling bad about yourself and giving up or going into a depression. That used to happen to me a lot when I set impossible hurdles for myself and failed. It takes time to learn and then practice neutral calming self-soothing methods rather than the picking. I used to pick my scalp too AND my skin all over my body and face badly. It takes time to stop. I fell down and got up so many times I lost count. If you can get therapy, do. If you can't afford a therapist, then, read about cognitive therapy for CSP. My therapist told me not use the rubber band method because I was already hurting myself and not to substitute one thing that hurts for another. That I need to use non-harmful self soothing methods. Remember to forgive yourself! It is not your fault. This a disorder that is related to OCD. I found for me that healing comes by degrees- one baby step at a time...two baby steps forward one baby step back. Please be kind to yourself. This disorder is NOT your fault. I found Charles Duhigg's book The Power of Habit very helpful.
For what it's worth, I've used these for a little bit for skin picking: https://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Music-Publishing-98-GT102CLR-Guitar/dp/B0091C03YG/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1504237598&sr=1-1&keywords=gorilla+tips
They're a very similar idea. I've found it helpful because they're a little more inconspicuous than some other options, and I can still use touch screens with them because they're not super bulky. They don't fix the problem entirely (unfortunately) but they do keep me from falling into old routines when studying. Also, the ones I have don't have any air holes in them, so it can get kinda humid in the tip. I might have almost gotten pruney fingers like I was in the bath too long once
So sorry for the late response but what really helped me stop nail biting once and for all is to use the Mavala nail polish that is specifically designed to stop nail biting (you can get it on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Switzerland-Stop-Nail-Biting/dp/B0000YUXI0 or https://www.amazon.com/Mavala-Helps-Biting-Thumb-Sucking/dp/B00336WT3O). The taste is sooo bitter and disgusting that you don't want to put your finger back in your mouth. The only downside is that it can rub off onto finger foods or cooking, so if you eat chips or grab food with your nails you will taste the polish. But it's a small price to pay for long term reward. I cannot tell you how badly my nail biting was until I used this nail polish and now I have the longest nails out of all my friends. I hope you try it out some time! Good luck!
https://www.amazon.com/Seki-Edge-Stainless-Fingernail-Clipper/dp/B000F35R00/
These are good. Very sharp, and they catch the clippings inside of it so they don't go flying off to god knows where. Comes with a curved nail file too!
Cheaper, bigger tin with a similar consistency and ingredients (had current since December and I still have ~30% left) is badger balm! It's amazing and also available on Amazon here
It's called Barielle No Bite Pro Growth. The post was a link to this amazon listing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012CD32W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Sorry for the formatting, I'm on mobile. The OP of that post said they ate chips and dip with no issue while wearing it, but I haven't tried it myself.
