There's plenty of discussion. Two examples:
r/Chromebook: When will more Chromebooks be available?
Official Support Forum: New Chromebook - any update on availability?
The answer: An employee at Google or Samsung was put in charge of deciding how many units were produced. That person used all data available to them to make their choice. They considered how many other Chromebooks have been sold, how many devices usually sell this time of year, etc. After carefully analyzing that data they made their choice.
That employee was wrong. They vastly underestimated the demand for these units, which is why they're extremely hard to find. More are in production - don't stress about that. Google Play even had a few for sale today - although it wasn't announced anywhere.
There will be plenty of these on the shelves by the Holidays. Google and Samsung wouldn't have it any other way ;)
You're actually the second person who has reported this here, which is odd, because I haven't heard any word on it otherwise.
Here is the other thread that discusses the issue.
I'd love to hear from a current Series 3 owner if this is expected behavior. My Series 550 is able to stay charged for quite awhile in "sleep mode", losing very little power.
In the mean time, please go here and report that you're also having trouble. That is the official support forum for Chrome OS - we can't officially provide support here.
This was brought up recently, but I've yet to hear anything official about it, or any early mention in the project tracker.
As of now, Chrome OS hasn't perfected external monitor support of any nature. Running the latest developer channel on my Samsung 550, I have the occasional bug with my wired external displays. This needs to be perfected long before we see any wireless external display support.
If you simply want Chrome OS on your TV, you can buy a DisplayPort++ or HDMI cable (depending on your Chromebook model) and plug it in directly. For wireless support (Miracast or otherwise), you're going to have to wait for now.
Note: This post should have been placed in /r/ChromeOS as VPN functionality is related to the core operating system and is not specific to any Chromebook.
In regards to the question, I'm not aware of any VPN providers who provide official support for the Chrome OS platform. I've personally spoken to two ( and TunnelBear) who are happy to look into supporting Chrome OS once the demand grows.
Chrome OS does support a few common protocols. Just remember that with no official support, if something goes wrong you may simply be out of luck =\
Beggin is talking about how the Chromebox Series 3, Samsung Chromebook, and Samsung series 5 550 all get 100GB of storage on Google Drive, which is pretty sweet.
https://drive.google.com/redeem
It seems to still be rolling out. The page tells me I need to update before I can redeem.
I specifically thought echelon59's post on Suggested Method of identifying/naming your Chromebook, when posting was fantastic where the mode/project code names were unique and easily identifiable.
This sounds like a software issue - I suggest doing as /u/israel_torres suggests and recover the device first. This will clear any and all local data, which fixes the vast majority of software problems.
If you're still having problems at that point, I suggest heading to the official support group for Chrome OS and posting there. Google employees frequently respond to threads there, so it is a fantastic resource.
Best of luck!
Just got my Chromebook 3 (wifi only) on Nov. 1st and am still learning all the functions. There is a built-in video player that will play some video types but not all. I have successfully player mp4 and avi but won't play wmv. These can be played from USB or SD, doesn't matter. Apparently to play wmv, you have to upload to google drive or picasa, which of course is a pain. Discussion here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromebook-central/INT3Bi1i6g4
If you have more questions, I can try to help but again, I'm still learning on this new machine and OS...
careful with the chrome web store 'simulation'; some apps aren't designed for the ARM version of chromebook - a lot of devs have updated this on their app sidebar, but others haven't.
crosh in dev-mode using shell does a lot more than just ssh
I actually haven't tried it (I'm aware that the the gestures wouldn't be there) but not sure if a 70$ mouse makes sense for a 250$ laptop (when places like best buy have 15$ mice). :/ this is pretty much the same reason I haven't bothered in investing in a case like this one
Thanks for the response, but you clearly didn't read the petition. As the petition states, Chrome OS does support VPN's out of the box (including OpenVPN), but configuration is not as simple as it could be. The provider in question, TunnelBear, is known for making the process drop-dead simple for non-savvy users.
This petition is attempting to bring that drop-dead simple configuration to Chrome OS, not VPN's at large.
Thanks anyway.
