I was surprised when Twiggy Twiggy showed up as one of YT's recommendations for this: apparently Nanako Sato wrote it for P5.
Thanks to the folks over at our discord server who helped me do this!
Here's another well-done (unrelated to the chart) list who goes more in-depth on a few albums https://rateyourmusic.com/list/DeanMalo/my-primer-for-japanese-70s_80s-popular-music/
As a matter of fact, J-Canuck, the main author of the site, is a good friend of mine! He tends to do individual songs more often so I try to do full albums. Doing these full album review requires a lot of research on my end. If you enjoy my content, I'd appreciate it if you considered supporting me through Teespring and/or Patreon. Thanks!
Cool, I love the instrumental section at 1:30, google is telling me that Aests sampled that song, is that who you're thinking of?

I had no clue she wrote that. I guess it was technically written for Maki though, as the song appears on her 1981, pre-P5 solo album Pink Heart (it's track 11, although the katakana is slightly different than the Pizzicato version). There used to be a video of it on YouTube, but it's been blocked in the US.
Enough is never enough.
Now I have to save up for one of these:
I can't argue with you there, I suppose it comes down to price against availability. They're cheaper to buy digitally (at least on Amazon.co.jp), but there isn't a lot available that way.
I usually listen to mixes and will admit to pirating albums that are out of print (e.g. Love Trip by Takako Mamiya) but otherwise have made an Amazon Wish List of both physical and digital albums myself.
this looks like a very nice read, too bad i cannot order it /no delivery to Czechia/. I found this one to be also interesting, so I might get at least this one
F***! That's expensive! With the current conversion rate that's ¥8622 JPY!! Just order from Amazon Japan, it's ¥4620 JPY = $36.44 USD.
No idea about his current business model. If you want to look into the (pretty precarious) working conditions of his early career, there's an article about him in 1970音楽人百科 that goes a bit into that. I can scan it for you if you're interested - it's all in Japanese though. For some general impressions of the business side of the 1970s Tokyo 'New Music' scene that he was a part of, I can also recommend the book 風都市伝説.
I would recommend doing searches for themes or keywords you think are indicative of city pop on Pexels and Pixabay. I found pictures for people on the Discord on these at some point a month or two ago that were pretty good in my opinion. Everything on these two sites is high quality (i.e. multiple megapixels) and royalty-free.
Here is the bass tab if anyone is interested. I made a video a long time ago, but YouTube took it down for copyright. Happy learning!

Oh nono, up to 50'000 songs are uploaded to their cloud and added to your "music library", accessible anywhere!
Here's the program that synchronizes your folders of choice with your online Music Library
And here's a Play Music Desktop program for using Google Play Music on your pc
Quoting Wikipedia is fine IMO, although I do quite like the description at the top of this RYM playlist too. Here's an attempt to pare it down a bit:
> City Pop is a breezy, mellow mixture of smooth jazz and album-oriented rock – often with elements of jazz fusion, jazz-funk, or boogie – which appealed to an older and more affluent Japanese audience during the 1980s. Essentially a "mood" or "lifestyle" genre, its themes reflected a life of luxury in a sophisticated urban environment.

This is going to be the cheapest option you find before its all completely gone
In my google translate cache I have this:
Kumiko Hara (Jazz singer) died at a hospital in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo at 2:08 am on the 17th due to a brain tumor, 50 years old. She is from Tokyo. Her funeral and farewell ceremony will be held from 10 am on the 21st at Kirigatani Saiba, 32-20, 5 Nishigotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo. Her mourner is her mother Tomoko.
She became blind when she was a girl, but she made her debut as a singer in 1978 and has been active in live houses. She succeeded in climbing Mont Blanc in Europe in 1994, and she became a hot topic. Her book is "Listen to the Wind of Her Montblanc, Guide Dog Bol."

This is translation of an Amazon review of book
She is a singer / songwriter who has released three albums. This book was different from her musical activities, and I thought it was a book about climbing Mont Blanc with a guide dog, but this time I got it and it was (almost) an autobiography of Kumiko Hara. From an early age, youth aiming for music, after becoming a professional, and so on, you are aiming for the summit of Mont Blanc. Why? She is a must-have book for her fans. I enjoyed it very much.
Hello Everyone!
I thought that this was the best subreddit to ask about this. So I've recently been looking into owning some city pop vinyls for myself, and decided to look into getting pocket music first since it's one of my favorites.
However I was super surprised and confused to find out that it's possibly getting a re-release? I can't seem to find any more information about it online so I was wondering if anyone else knew anything about it and could help?

Download a premium APK for Spotify. (assuming you have Android) Use ProtonVPN and a fake email generator to create a Japanese Spotify account. Then profit from the extended list of citypop artists. Been doing it this way for 6 months now.
I'm too lazy to put together a chart, but there are two awesome compilation albums out there of Japanese female pop from the 60s:
Nippon Girls: Japanese Pop, Beat, & Bossa Nova 1967-1969
Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT - we thought we'd give a Bluetooth player a try last year. Sacrilege, I know, but it works for our current space and I was surprisingly impressed by the sound quality.
I use an Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable, which is a decent entry-level turntable. I'm planning on upgrading eventually, but it's good for the price.
My receiver/amplifier is an old 90s Technics model I got on Craigslist for $50. Works fine.
My speakers are just some Sony bookshelf speakers I got years ago. Don't remember the model number. They sound okay to me, but lack bass. I've heard good things about these Pioneer speakers though. Good reviews.
