This is how I’m planning to bring my daughter’s things to daycare every day. Let me know what you think; I’m very open to suggestions.
I’m going to put wet cloth wipes in the Huggies pouch, which I will replace everyday to make sure it doesn’t get musty (I have two pouches to rotate).
The bottles will be transferred to the fridge when we get there, and that compartment can be used to hold the wet bag for the dirties (currently in the compartment with the wipes and cream). Note on these bottles: some people might criticize the Kiinde bottle system because the plastic pouches with the milk get thrown away when the baby finishes the bottle, but please keep in mind most people store milk in plastic bags anyway. This system just eliminates the transfers (from pump bottle to bag and then bag back to bottle) and limits how much needs to be cleaned. The only thing that gets washed everyday are pump parts and one nipple.
I’ll bring a wet bag with extra clean clothes to be kept there and given to me if used, and I’ll store a small wet bag (got it with my cloth breast pads) with pacifiers in a side compartment.
What am I not thinking of? Anything? Daycare is right across the street, so it’s easy to carry and quick to get there.

Disposable liners. Our favorite are Ingeo from amazon. They stay put nicely, poop plops right off into the toilet, they get thrown in the ubbi. If it isn't plopable they just go right into ubbi. It's a very small added cost for a large benefit in my opinion.
Edit: Dandelion Diapers Baby Diaper Liners, 100% Ingeo, Chlorine and Dye-Free to Keep Baby Skin Dry - 200 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011A9PTVE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MxFrCbZJJ3PV2
You should never put microfiber directly against the skin because it is too drying. Definitely try the fleece liners on top if you can't afford different inserts. If you want to get different inserts and are on a budget (say if the fleece liners don't work) get some flour sack towels
I believe those are the most popular ones that people use. I believe you can pad fold those or you can wrap them around baby if you like, or if you are handy you could sew them into prefolds that you can pad fold.
Instead of a peri bottle to wet the cloth wipes, I really like using these: Push water dispenser
I think someone recommended it here actually!
When I first started, I took everything that could potentially be used as an insert (towels of different types, MF inserts we had, charcoal inserts we had, blankets, etc) and experimented by pouring some water onto them. I don't remember exactly how much, but it was whatever the difference between a wet and dry diaper was when I weighed it... maybe 4 oz or so? I looked at how quickly they absorbed, could they absorb it all, and what happened if I pressed on it. For me the blankets didn't do well. That being said, flour sack towels also didn't do well, and people often love them. And the charcoal ones did great, even though people on here sometimes point out that they're secretly just microfiber! So I'd suggest doing an experiment like this and seeing what works well for you. I know you said budget is tight, but the charcoal ones I like are pretty cheap-- $30 for 12. They're a bit cheaper if you buy the non-gusset version too.
I cut up some of my flannel receiving blankets and use them as cloth wipes. I didn't even stitch them! They're getting a little frayed but not too bad and so easy-- I literally just cut it into squares and that's that.
I don't know if they're still legitimately popular but one of my friends living in Germany sold several of us in the US some used Disana tie diapers that are very nice. (And she sold them for much cheaper than new ones; I think just two or three dollars each.) It's a style I really wish was more popular in the US because they're super easy to use and really cute.
Before you go buying a bunch of clothes to fit over the diapers, keep in mind that as babies grow, the diapers look and feel WAY less bulky. By probably 3 months, our baby had gotten a little more proportional, but she is a fast grower. So just don’t expect this to be an issue through potty training! Those little kick gowns/sleep gowns are great for newborns too! I installed this one by myself and it has worked great so far. The reviews say it’ll last for years if you use the on/off valve properly and it’s got amazingly high pressure to blast off stubborn poop. I use a spray pal as well to make sure I don’t spray the whole bathroom.

Hands down these:
They are amazing. We use pockets and unstuff/spray before plopping them in a 12 gallon garbage can lined with these. We can go days with out any smell in the room if needed but I normally wash about every 3 days and it does not stink up his room. And then this way i just take the full bag out, empty it in the wash, toss the bag in as well, and put the 2nd bag in the can.
Honestly, mine has no ventilation and is totally fine after a year n half of cloth diapering. We use the deckor hands free diaper pail with the reusable bags. It works really well for us, no smell issues, and is user friendly.
Love Nora's nursery!!
My routine with hard water in a front loader whirlpool
As I change LO I remove the inserts from the pocket diaper before putting everything in our diaper bin.
• throw soiled diapers and inserts into washer then bulk out with shop towels until the drum is 3/4 of the way full(HE front loaders need to be filled at least 2/3 of the way to clean effectively) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UF7UNTQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zy2hFbESMA5KZ
• add powdered tide original to line 1 and half a cap of calgon to detergent drawer.
•wash on quick wash, hot water, heavy soil.
•after the cycle has run through add tide original powder to level 3 or 4 depending on how soiled your diapers are and half a cap of calgon to detergent drawer.
•wash on heavy duty (longest setting, hot water, heaviest soil level/water level)
•if the weather permits I line dry everything outside. If its rainy or cloudy I hang the shells on a drink racks and dry the inserts on high in my dryer.
Drying the shells in the dryer will reduce the longevity of the elastics and the water proof lining.
Hope this helps ♡
I love having this cart to put all the diapers and wipes in. Would be useful for disposable too but the cloth takes up more space so I love this cart!
Also a bigger diaper bag since the diaps take up more space
Some kind of drying rack to hang dry your covers
A diaper sprayer kit for spraying off poop once they’re eating solids. You can just dunk them in the toilet but I like this one
If you’re ordering from Green Mountain I recommend their lotion potion for a wipes solution. I just ordered a cheap spray bottle off Amazon to dilute it in. Also GMD cotton cloth wipes.
lots of wet bags!
The cloth safe diaper cream I use is the green tube of Boudreaux’s butt paste
Cat & Jack brand pants from target fit a fluff butt well. I especially like the joggers (in the boys section). But all pants fit at some point you may just have to use the next up size
For fitteds and prefolds, Green Mountain Diapers is the gold standard. They have very quick shipping (usually within hours I get the notification), and they always ship priority mail (2-3 business days). They're located out of Vermont so if you order them to your hotel in Las Vegas it should take about 3 days. I live in California and GMD reliably shows up in 2-3 business days.
Also- the owner of GMD is super communicative. If you were worried about timing I'd just shoot her a quick email and arrange for quicker shipping.
Edited to add: Green Mountain Diapers also sells through Amazon. That way you can have your shipment delivered to an Amazon locker in Las Vegas if you are unable or unwilling to ship to your hotel.
Second edit: OK OK, nobody tell Green Mountain Diapers that I've experimented with other prefolds. But. My second favorite prefolds are GroVia bamboo blend prefolds and those are definitely available on Amazon!. Unfortunately they're pretty pricey at ~$14 USD for three prefolds.

Alvas have been the best fit for my baby. She’s 3 months and 16 lbs with chunky legs. We initially got the microfiber inserts and they aren’t great. We then purchased a set with bamboo inserts and they have been much better! The set came with 6 diapers and 12 inserts so we use the inserts with the other ones we had. Here is the link for what we got: Alva Baby Color Snaps
I also bought some used off of Facebook marketplace and the older quality was pretty terrible. I’d only buy alvas new but that’s just my opinion. Good luck!

Any one that buttons down the front should have plenty of room. It is pretty much all they wear - I just pick them up at thrift shops when I see them.
We have a changing table with drawers and also an over the door rack that makes things easy to grab. We swapped out the hamper at the changing table for a plastic vented hamper with a grovia pail liner and it works great for us.

Honestly, I found these to be really similar to the Alvas!
We've been using this exact set for 8 months now with prefolds as covers. The only thing I noticed recently is that the elastic on one of them is starting to not be as tight so I might pick up a single or two. But I figure for 8 months, just using this 6 isn't too bad. Plus I wash at least weekly if not more so maybe that's why it didn't last as long? I just switch out the cover for a new one and let the other one dry out. Unless of course there's poop.
Anyway, it also came with a handy wet bag I use often!
It depends on the connection to the toilet water line. Likely you have a T connection that splits the water to the toilet and your bidet. In theory you could remove the bidet from the T and add an addition T connection, leaving your toilet output connected to the original T, and reconnect your bidet line with the sprayer to the secondary T. You would not have enough water pressure to run two things simultaneously, but you likely weren’t doing that to begin with.
Hopefully this links on mobile, this is the T I used to connect my sprayer, you would just need to buy one if the connections are all 3/8 which should be standard.

It is cloth diaper safe (source: https://www.allaboutclothdiapers.com/cloth-diaper-safe-diaper-rash-creams-updated-again/)
We used a cloth diaper service for the first 2 months of our daughter's life to help us transition to being new parents without the added burden of tons of laundry, and honestly it really isn't that bad. They did a weekly pickup and we just chucked all diapers straight into the pail without any rinsing. Newborn poo is not as smelly as adult poo (at least if they are breastfeed, I'm admittedly not familiar with formula-fed poo). If your partner is really stressed about potential smelliness, there's all sorts of diaper pail deodorizers that you can buy (like this: https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Nursery-Fresheners-Assorted-Lavender/dp/B0035ER58I/ref=pd\_lpo\_card\_1?pd\_rd\_i=B0035ER58I&psc=1), and I suppose if they really didn't want poo-diapers sitting around for a week you could use disposable liners, though I'm not sure how great those are with liquid-y newborn poo - if you absolutely needed to remove the poo, a sprayer is going to be your best bet (and you'll probably want one in the long run, once the baby is eating solid food). Also, this is going to seem counter-intuitive, but it's best if the diaper pail is left open - the smell will get worse if there is no airflow. But yeah seriously, either the smell isn't that bad, or you're too exhausted to care, or you get used to it!
We just use a normal diaper bag. We just throw in one diaper generally for most trips, so it's not really that bulky. We do keep a few disposables in there too as backup, but we don't store cloth diapers in there or else they'd be out of the rotation.
My main diaper bag rec is that the zipper should be able to be opened with one hand. So a zipper that's affixed like this yes, but one like this where the ends of the zippers are free floating (which makes them open up wider) are a no.
My husband got them off of amazon

I hate the inserts that come with Nora’s nursery diapers. They leaked pretty immediately. They’re microfiber. I’d suggest getting different inserts. The ones we use are polyester and pretty awesome. Looks like lots of other places sell it too :)
I can't speak to using different diaper types since I don't have experience with AIOs at all, but I have this clothesline from Amazon I have been using over a year now to dry all my laundry. It works quite well. Unless it's super humid and chilly, typically everything dries overnight.
FYI, Amazon dosn't have the best price on cloth diapers. if you are going to buy several, I would recommend buying from nickis or another cloth diaper specific online store. they are cheaper, have free shipping, and don't charge sales tax. Plus, you get free stuff if your order is over a certain amount. http://www.nickisdiapers.com/thirsties-duo-wrap-diaper-covers.html https://www.amazon.com/Thirsties-Wrap-Cloth-Diaper-Cover/dp/B00PVZB4OU/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1510775557&sr=8-3&keywords=thirsties+duo+wrap+size+1
I'd suggest flour sack towels (Link is to the ones I have from Amazon, but my understanding is that you can get them for about a dollar a piece at Walmart) with covers (I like flip covers but I think the brand is less important).
Flats, like flour sack towels, are multi-purpose, cheap, and super fast to dry. My dryer died on me a few months ago and I realized how much easier the single layer flats were to wash and dry. I agree with the last response that probably 20 or so flats and a few covers would be reasonable, but because they are cheap and multipurpose having 40 of them around wouldn't be the worst thing either!
If you are on desktop you can hover over the link and find out the name of the item. Target annoys me with the redirect. I always have to google it.

We used it for about 8 months before buying our house, and honestly, I preferred it for diaper laundry even after we moved. For us, it was a little more aggressive of a wash, so I found that pockets and AIOs were best. I had a few prefolds "eaten" by the tough wash cycle. I might have been overloading though, so you may have a different experience.

Our routine was to leave it hooked up in the "spare" bathroom, and load the diapers in as we used them. About once a day or once every other day, I would do a rinse, a regular wash, then 2 full rinses. Then I would do the spin dryer. Hang dry in a line in the bathroom, and we were all set. Feel free to PM if you need any help, we had our baby in cloth from day through when she essentially potty trained herself at 2.5.
Fluff love wouldn't be 3 washes, it's just two. For most front loaders that's a quick wash on heavy soil high spin and a heavy duty cycle with heavy soil and high spin.
Purex baby needs a half cap in the first wash and 1.5 caps in the main wash. Ignore lines with those measurements, cap means to the brim.
As others have said vinegar isnt good for your machine or diapers.
Are you filling your drumn2/3-3/4 fill for the main wash?
How long/how many washes have you done this? You may need to strip and bleach to reset the diapers.
It is recommended to test water hardness. Test kits can be found a Walmart, pool supply stores, hardware stores, pet stores, and online. You'll need to make sure the kit says it tests for Total Hardness or General Hardness. Testing water directly from the machine is best. If you plan to use hot water to wash, both hot and cold should be tested. ** Avoid the free Whirlpool and Water Boss brand tests as they have been known to give inaccurate results. Also, avoid the electric TDS tests as they do not test Hardness.
If you have a Petsmart nearby they test water samples for free. Canada Home Hardware tests for free, as well.
If you don't want to search for a kit, here's one you can order from Amazon
That will determine whether or not you need water softener and how much.
All (brand) liquid detergent contains sodium cocoate which coats fibers like fabric softener. It traps bacteria and buildup and sill eventually cause repelling.
Is there another detergent you'd like to use?

Yes, absolutely need detergent in the prewash and testing your water hardness for a number. I'd also bump the temperature up to hot on the nainwash.
Method needs 1.5 caps prewash and 3 caps mainwash (cap means to the brim ignoring lines).

Daycare appreciates them and so do we. Massively reduces the poop ick factor. I put them in when I fold and prep the diapers after washing.
Haha, the fold I use is called the origami fold and it is printed on the packaging of the osocozy flat diapers. They come in bleached and unbleached, I like the unbleached better but it’s just personal preference, they’re the same in utility. link to unbleached flats
That definitely makes sense, I was the same way , I wanted to make sure I removed as many potential road blocks as possible. The main reason I hated stuffing the first time was because I loathed the feel of the microfiber and how it clung to my skin ... ew. But, you find a way to kind of hold it/touch it as little as possible while still stuffing with it and it gets a lot better. The hemp is really expensive, so it wasn’t a go to option for me. I bought 18 prefolds thinking I was going to use them and covers during the newborn stage but sposies we were given ended up more than getting us through the new born stage and thank god, it’s a rough time and If I’d cloth diapered during it it would have been too much for me (ftm, unplanned section, covid stress, just no). Anyways, the prefolds are so good for stuffing pockets. I got these and these (they’re the same thing with different color stitching), the size 2 is HUGE, I can’t see ever using them, but again, I’m only 15 weeks into motherhood and less than that into cloth diapering, so we’ll see. Sorry if I’ve rambled; I’m just very into learning about cloth diapering and like to help anyone I can since I was in your shoes not very long ago.
Welcome to the cloth diaper world! Cloth diaper babies tend to have a bigger booty so we tend to buy a size bigger in everything, especially pants. My favorite pants are these here on Amazon. They have a looser booty area. I am happy to answer any other questions!

Your water company can only tell you the average at the treatment facility. Pipes may a HUGE difference in the water hardness at your actual machine.
It sounds like you have a hybrid? If you can select the load size and heavy soil that sounds like a hybrid machine. What's the model number or is there a similar one in the washer index? http://www.fluffloveuniversity.com/how-to-wash-cloth-diapers/washing-machine-index/
You may be just now noticing issues, but that doesn't mean they weren't building with your old routine/washer.
I put plastic pants over the whole diaper cover at night. It prevents leaking. You need to get it big enough to cover the whole outside of the diaper.

For online deals, my husband swears by slickdeals.net for the best 'deal-of-the-day' on the internet - although their main focus is on electronics. I'm also a fan of BFads.net for posting fliers prior to their official release from the actual merchant/store for my Black Friday shopping. I'm not sure if these sites will be helpful with finding the best CD deals though...

I'm likewise due with my first - in Jan., and I'll definitely be watching this post. Despite me being an avid BF shopper, it never occured to me to develop my stash on this day! Thanks for the idea!!
I cloth diapered in Japan--still am actually cloth diapering in Japan. The biggest issue for me is the driers.....everyone line-dries here, so while we have access to a drier, it takes forever and runs our electric bill up. Both of us work so we don't have time to hang up laundry during the work-week, so, we use the dryer and just suck it up.
Also translating the washing machine was a nightmare, but that ended up being a sink-or-swim thing for me because I had to do my own laundry! At one point I considered buying a Laundry POD or a Laundry Wander Wash like this one from Walmart....which, actually, a few guys I work with saw me looking at it and ended up buying one for the shop. They use it for their fuel/grunge soaked work coveralls and it works really well.
I would agree with another commenter and say go up a rise. I use mostly Alva's and my son has been on the next rise up since about that size. We also had lots of leaks with microfiber inserts, I have one bamboo Alva but I use two inserts at a time and don't have leaks. If you want to try different inserts cheaply I suggest getting FST from Walmart and folding them to fit in the pockets. Like these https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Non-Terrycloth-Kitchen-Towel-5pk-White/44432717 I use one towel in each diaper but if you have a really heavy wetter they are thin enough that you could double them up. They hold so much. I never have leaks anymore since using these. They also sell them in a 10 pack for 7 something.
Correct! Just toss all that in the wash. I would add cloth wipes though. It’s so nice to just have a pile of laundry when you’re done. No need to sort out trash from laundry. If you plan on doing disposables at night, get disposable wipes for those changes. But cloth wipes are awesome! We use a mix of LPO wipes (velvety, very nice but pricey), and these two linked below which are much cheaper.

These are my favorite, except they don’t stack well. Not a deal breaker for me.

I just use a laundry basket with holes. I don't recommend anything with a lid because you get into a diaper genie situation where the smell is trapped and knocks you out every time the lid opens.
This is the one I have, but I got it at Meijer for $5.
There are some DIY solutions out there like with a bucket that you cut the bottom out of.
I have a SprayStand which I prefer to other options because it can sit on the toilet and drip dry. So that's something to consider when making/buying one.
Here is a picture of my drying rack in action: Drying Rack
Amazon link for similar rack. I can't find the actual one I bought years ago: Drying Rack
I use these.
I got three (45) but I haven't even come close to using them all by laundry day. Probably getting 30 would be fine. They shrink the first time you wash them, and they seem like they'll be too small, but they're the perfect size.
I used thesefor the umbilical cord phase. I had other newborn cloth, but even with folding them down, his cord still got bothered when he would scrunch his legs up. The biggest bummer is that I had a very big baby, so newborns only lasted 2 weeks tops.
I use one like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H7P1GPO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_PNDQE5XTMMP9YC9SCPVC
But I've seen that this one is particularly popular as well https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018HW1ZOW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_DQA7GTA9N8M9SBT4Z96P

We really like the Thirsties Inserts but we’ve always used them as a doubler with the microfiber insert that came with our Mama Koalas.
I’ve ordered a few other types that I don’t prefer as much - an all hemp one that distorted a bit with washing so I find it a bit bulky because it doesn’t lay flat, a small cotton one that doesn’t leak but it looks less substantial so for no logical reason I don’t trust it, and a grovia insert that is weirdly skinny?
All in all - FWIW none of the inserts we got to use with the MK microfibers have lead to leaks I just like the thirsties ones best! Hope that helps
I have 2 diaper pails and 2 medium sized wet bags that I got on Amazon. Got 2 to rotate through laundry day. The 2 medium sized wet bags I really only use when out and about; have one wet bag holds with clean diapers and the other is used for dirty diapers.
I have total 90 cotton flannel wipes that I also bought on Amazon—whenever there’s poop I usually double or triple wipe (1/2 to clean and 1 to dry butt) I wash every 3 days but also have enough pocket diapers such that I don’t need to stuff diapers until the weekend which is convenient for me. But that also means I needed to buy extra wipes so that wouldn’t be a limiting factor.
This is the wipes I bought off of Amazon (Buttons Flannel Baby Reusable Washable Natural Unbleached Wipes - 15 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GLBR3C0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_7DMW7QBT023GDZEQF4BY)
We needed to reset our diapers for baby #2. This entailed rinsing the diapers for a long time. I purchased the Easy Go hand washing wand off Amazon. It made the process much easier. However we haven’t used it on soiled diapers. But if I ever needed to I would definitely used this and a bucket.

Green Mountain Diapers and Osocozy are popular. We use these small ones and these big ones. As long as you have something with multiple layers, they'll be fine. I prefer 100% cotton.
I bought this pack on Amazon and it’s the perfect amount to get us between laundry days. They’re thin, which I actually like. Bumkins Reusable Flannel Wipes, 24 Count, Natural - 2 Packs of 12 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M1RODIK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_T64RY3BX6XY4RN7Q837J?psc=1
Something like this could work? I have something similar I bought in Brazil, but they are not hard to make :)
Ok so because I saw this I bit the bullet and finally ordered my mama kolas. I got this bundle because I love cottagecore and there is just one turkey one. So really to me only one seasonal one. I do plan on setting it to the side until it’s needed lol. With the deal and for the 5 it’s still only $4.13 per diaper after taxes (just under $4 before taxes). Actually get this one. It’s so much better, I’ve had more struggles with the metal one, they tend to loose the elastic on occasion. We bought a toilet potty seat similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085H79WJZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_Lml-FbV97VVSY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Also, will they sit on it as part of a game? Maybe with clothes on? Show them how you do it?
We didn't have a hard time but lollipops were a great treat. Lastly, slip it in as a routine before bed maybe? Brush teeth, change our of clothes, sit on potty, out on PJs...
Also, when my wife and I did potty training, we did the three day technique. They stay naked the whole time. It's not for all.
Good luck.
I'm not sure what the options are for bigger fitted diapers but I can share a large pocket diaper that I really like: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PT9C44Q For reference my daughter wore Thirsties Size 2 with the rise all the way open and the hip snaps being pretty close to the outside, and this diaper I had the rise snaps buttoned as much as possible. I have a heavy wetter and used a half receiving blanket with hemp insert stuffed in that diaper and it held up well.
His growth may slow down and it may be fine, so definitely hold off as long as you can. My daughter started outgrowing her diapers at about 13 months but she did start to slim down slightly. By the time I started potty training (21 months) she was on the last snaps of most of her diapers but I couldn't get the hip snaps on with most of her pocket diapers. I wonder if you might be able to cover up the outer snaps on the workhorses and use them for quite a while longer.
We got the Amazon one too. Could have sworn it was $20 as well but this is it here now for $30. So easy to install that I take it with me when we travel for extended periods (when that was a thing!) I've used it on pockets, fitteds, and flats. It's great!
My strips also come back on the lightest possible color! I used liquid tide before but I honestly felt like it was “too powerful” LOL but to be fair I also was using it before I found out my water is as soft as it is, so maybe now I could go back to using it and just be very careful about the quantity. The last month I’ve been using liquid arm & hammer (I think this one) and it’s been working fine! I think next time I’ll buy the unscented version just to stay away from the artificial fragrances, but performance wise it’s been working great, and I do think the smell is less strong than tide, which I prefer.
Also, this is valid for everyone, but if you have soft water I think it’s super important to do all the math to figure out how to correctly wash your diapers. You can look it up on the website “cloth diapers for beginners”, but the gist of it is:
I bought 2 of these wet wet bags. When one is full I throw it in the wash with all the diapers and then work on filling up the next.
Edit: a word
We use the Dekor plus with their cloth liners and are very happy with it.

The bulb came from Amazon but similar ones are sold at Lowes and Home Depot. It is not a nightlight -- we actually have had a nightlight bulb for about a year now, lovingly called "the glow bulb" but it is simply too dull for changes. This is the bulb
I got a Bumkins one on amazon and husband installed it. He picked on me for shelling out $40 for it (dunno why its more expensive now on Amazon) but he uses it to clean diapers as much as I do. We have a solid eating 7 month old and a toddler. Toddler has the grossest poops so this thing has been the best.
This is just the one I have. There's a ton of others.

My hanging wet bag has a zipper and yes, I keep it unzipped. But in my trash can i use a wet bag that is also referred to as a pail liner. It's the same exact material but at the top it is elastic and stretches around the opening of the can much like a trash bag. Here is the Amazon link to it so you can see the picture :) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004Q2Z9TK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_dKKRwbWCEV4BW

we keep it in the closet with no lid. we can go up to a week not doing laundry but by the 5th day, it starts getting a little stinky.
we do rinse off most of our diapers also with a sprayer. all of them whether it's just pee or poop.
We honestly bought Alva's through Amazon and they have held up better than most of our other diapers. We used pockets and the prints are pretty cute. Our son is now almost 2 and a half and he can still fit into them for night time and naps, though he started to toilet train himself about a month ago. Alva Diapers

There are ways to test your water yourself, or you can buy a testing kit, I'm sure.
We definitely have hard water, and I put Rain Drops on my Amazon Subscribe & Save list so it just comes every few months without me having to think about it. I got a cheap jar from the dollar store, threw the right size measuring cup in here with it, and just add a scoop every time I have to wash diapers.
We just got this lesser known brand on Amazon that was recommended by GMD. So far it works great and I like that it has a lower shutoff valve so it won’t flood the bathroom. It’s also all metal.

Thanks for sharing! I wish we had a 'quick' option. :) I've looked at the Wonderwash, its $49 on Amazon right now, but I'm not sure if I would consider using it more or less work than the extra running up and down the stairs for the coin-op machines. Certainly cheaper though! As with NYC the question would be... where to put it?? :-)
I bought these ones on Amazon recently and they are awesome!! I specifically looked for ones that were bigger because I felt like pad folding the mainstays ones made them too small for good coverage; these ones are 2in wider and they are perfect. The fabric is also not as rough. I did an absorbency test with these new FSTs and they were one of my best performers. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074GPNG15/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are inexpensive and work pretty well for the newborn stage. We had the Velcro version (which I can't find on Amazon) and they fit pretty well. We were able to use them up to ~12lbs, and by that point the size one and one size covers/pockets weren't so overwhelming. We only had 4 covers for NB, but I wished at the time that I had six because of poop.
We did 18 months in cloth diapers in full-time daycare starting at 6 weeks. Just the regular "travel size" wet bags on Amazon is what we used. You can find them in 2-3 packs for under $20 (I actually have this set which is 2 for $10). I would recommend 5. We started with 3, which was ok, but if for any reason it misses the load it screws you up a day, or if they use 2 in a day for some reason, etc. We're now in training pants/mostly potty trained stage (he's not yet 2 and not great with the up and down part yet) and still have the same 5 in rotation for any accidents (though they now last 2 weeks instead of just 1, yay!).
I also kept a roll of dog poo bags in his cubby which they always laughed at and said were unnecessary... Except when I opened the wet bag to find one in the bag containing a real doozy. Took about a month before they we regularly putting the poopy diapers in bags, which was definitely not a big deal and not something I specifically requested or anything, but made it very easy to pick out the poopies.
Oh, and if the liner wears out get silicone spray from the camping section to reseal it.
One of our Ikea Pressa broke so I upgraded to a metal hanger that holds 36. They had other models that hold 44 and 52 but I didn't think I needed one that big. I got it on Amazon.

High iron may turn white fabrics orange, which won't affect the function of your diapers. Theres a product called Out that can remove the discoloration if it bothers you.
Iron is different than total or general hardness which may affect the absorbency of your diapers over time if not treated.
What detergent are you using/going to use?
We have a similar one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07121VL4D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
29 bucks, lasted two+ years without trouble, installed in two homes. 10/10 recommend for both cloth diapers and bidet use.
The only learning curve on this one is water pressure. The valve is easy enough to operate, but its down low so you have to figure out by feel the pressure you want for diaper spraying versus bidet use. Hint: you don't want the max for either, because it is a firehose!
Also, make sure to close the valve and discharge excess water after every use, or it can leak. For the price it's not going to be able to hold that pressure in the nozzle 24/7 if you don't close it off at the base, if that makes sense.
We have them in plastic drawers like this (a tall 6 drawer one) 2 drawers for regular one size, 1 for inserts, 1 drawer for newborn size, 1 drawer for newborn inserts and the bottom drawer is night time (double gusset) diapers with Microfiber inserts - as well as extra wet bags and diaper liners for when we need to use zinc diaper cream. Haven’t started cloth wipes yet but I have them ready to go in a bin that sits on top of the tower 😅
If you can snag some hemp/cotton inserts, I highly recommend them over the Alva inserts. We started getting compression leaks at 9 weeks and had to fully switch because our baby was leaking through his diaper after less than an hour with the Alva inserts. I’ve loved these inserts.

Lots of people like powdered Tide original. If you're sensitive to scents, like me and everyone in my house, I recommend Natural Choices (if you can find it, luckily a place near me carries it in bulk). I use it with the Oxy Boost and a little borax since I have moderately hard water.
I have one like this. I tried early on to do the diapers 100% in there but struggled to find a method that got the soap out completely. I still love it though because I can do a small load every other day of one run with soap and one without. Then I save the partially washed diapers up until I have a full load for my regular machine. I only run them through the regular machine once since they are already pre washed in the portable. This way I’m not running my large machine inefficiently and not letting the diapers sit around dirty (and smelly) for too long.
I have a few pockets and hate stuffing them.
Try these. One Size Cloth Diaper Cover Snap with Double Gusset Snapping in the inserts is optional, they stay well enough with the flap. They run a tad small so they’ll fit a newborn earlier than most one-size covers.
If you do decide you like snapping the insert (diaper preferences tend to change when baby gets more mobile), get a Kam snap tool with size 20 snaps to add a snap to whatever insert you want. Also in reverse - add a snap to whatever cover you want, like Thirsties Duo.
If you want one that zips to hang by the straps, try Planet Wise (website) or Alvababy (only sold on Amazon and not their website, dunno why. Example Here
I use a large zippered hanging bag without issues. Prefer it as it hangs in his bathroom.
Closed wet bag vs open dry pail is a debate. I think experience varies by climate, here we use HVAC to keep the indoor humidity down and temp comfortable year round.
My LO didn't fit in our one-size pockets (we have one Alva, tons of Mama Koalas, and some Nora's Nursery) until she was 9 weeks old. We definitely did a mix of disposables and cloth for the first weeks while we were waiting on the bigger stash to fit. Fitted diapers with covers might be a good option. We had some newborn pockets I bought in a FB lot that worked perfect for us - here's the brand on Amazon.
