I had the same issue in my car and solved it by using an inline ground loop isolater, as others have mentioned. Here's the one I purchased for $6.99 USD through Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XQYN77L. This completely removed any audio interference from the engine.
You can buy the official touchscreen case and mount them using strong neodymium magnets. Alternatively, check out the setup photos of other users for inspiration https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP3hcflM2fty5ziB_yuFl1_4hJL2r1LlWdvdUgCROp0DqsgiTJgm5lJUoDY6aO5aA?key=SmkydlU1eVFEb20xOHFJX0ZZUk9KY3NGR2dlcVhB
You can update crankshaft by reflashing it. Some users use the microusb extension to make this easier - https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP3hcflM2fty5ziB_yuFl1_4hJL2r1LlWdvdUgCROp0DqsgiTJgm5lJUoDY6aO5aA/photo/AF1QipN3SH6BxGqsSoNcO-JSgMtOUHtTb-PqbsDRcphK?key=SmkydlU1eVFEb20xOHFJX0ZZUk9KY3NGR2dlcVhB
do share your setup once you finalize for others to see!
If you go to PICTURES from the main crankshaft website, you can see what people are doing. Everybody is doing custom jobs (including yours truly), but there are some very good ideas there, going from basic mounts to 3D printed custom parts.
Here is the link: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP3hcflM2fty5ziB_yuFl1_4hJL2r1LlWdvdUgCROp0DqsgiTJgm5lJUoDY6aO5aA?key=SmkydlU1eVFEb20xOHFJX0ZZUk9KY3NGR2dlcVhB
Oh hey, welcome.
I assume you use Windows. If you want to access the command console, take out the SD card and open with you computer. Open the "boot" drive of the SD card (it's what you see in My Computer). Now, look at the Crankshaft folder. You'll see the file called crankshaft-env.sh. You'll need to open that file by Notepad++ or Sublime Text. You'll see the DEV_MODE variable, change it from 0 to 1, save, take out the card, and boot the Pi :)
There is a meta-software called BerryBoot that allows you to boot multiple OS, but I have not tried myself. But I believe Crankshaft is compatible with it.
You should try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.xxy.hr&hl=en (that's not me). But be careful, leaving a tablet in a car is probably dangerous - the battery is not designed to withstand the temperature in the car.
You can use GitHub to clone into OpenAuto and follow his directions to build on Raspbian Stretch. Worked well for me on RPI2 and RPI3. i like having Raspbian to play around with, have access to the web and everything. i don't think it slows down the AA experience and gives a little more freedom. i'm also looking at making an Android Things Android Auto host out of my RPI3; then add some custom apps for weather, climate control, FM radio, etc. That's for future days and lots of learning curve. My current Beta version, with Beta housing. (audio runs through an amp in the trunk with a sub, sounds great.)
Thank you, I shall :)
I've got the screen calibrated now by applying a transformation matrix as per these instructions (specifically the 98-screen-calibration.conf part) and using this calculator, and am running in X11 mode. My only small issue now is the system boots to the main screen, then goes back to a login prompt, then reloads the main screen again so I'm not sure what's going on here but I'll keep poking around.
Thank you for your help, it's much appreciated!
If you want to build a frame or case by yourself then use ABS plastic for it. To glue it together melt a few abs plastic pieces in acethone. That is the best glue for abs. I did the same here: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP3hcflM2fty5ziB_yuFl1_4hJL2r1LlWdvdUgCROp0DqsgiTJgm5lJUoDY6aO5aA/photo/AF1QipMLeUz4rJowuYDmkGMMSu_I0uhRJazlr5x2q2lI?key=SmkydlU1eVFEb20xOHFJX0ZZUk9KY3NGR2dlcVhB
Some of those direct HDMI input displays report much higher supported resolutions than the native display, and then go on to scale your UI at say 1920x1080 to a far smaller real display.
I've had a similar issue with this screen https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07YCBWRQP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I had tiny (illegible) menus etc but when connected to a phone it looked kind of OK.
To fix, force the hdmi resolution in config.txt

in my case I added the following to the bottom of the file

hdmi_cvt=800 480 60 6 0 0 0
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
I have mine running on a 5A converter. I have the Pi, the official screen, fan and LED light running off of it. The phone plugs directly into my Pi 3, which is usb2, only 500mA. So my phone never charges, but also never really looses power.

I'm sure there should be some type of converter you could use to make it work, especially if you use an hdmi to composite converter. Something like this could work.
I has a similar concern. I ended up just paying the IAP for Simple Radio and switch to it in the mornings. Its streaming pretty good (I have unlimited T-Mobile data) It's worked great so far. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.streema.simpleradio

Why not just run android auto on the N7? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.xxy.hr
FWIW, I did have that setup and preferred the rpi + official touchscreen.

You can also get an OBD to USB/BT/WiFi
I think I'm going to try my luck with this one.
https://www.amazon.com/upscreen-Reflection-Touchscreen-Anti-Glare-Protection/dp/B01M5BUUNZ
On the manufacturer's page they have an image of the actual screen protector, and looks like it does cover at least some of the bezel.
I have an 05 Acura TL, so I bought this little guy to make my life easier.

However, today I took apart my build and added the jumper wires for the screen. Currently it's connected to my laptop and it's there's no lightning bolt on the screen, so thats a good sign! I'll have to test it tomorrow.
I'm just using a marine amplifier behind the Pi. That does all the fun stuff you would need a head unit for, even has a volume knob but it's pretty ugly so I left it alone and just use the gpio volume control.
I went with a marine amplifier because it's about as small as you can get so I am able to stick it behind the dash, it's more powerful than most headunits too so it's not a bad choice. Here's the one I use Pyle Hydra Marine Amplifier - Upgraded Elite Series 400 Watt 2 Channel Micro Amplifier - Waterproof, GAIN Level Controls, RCA Stereo Input, 3.5mm Jack & Volume Control (PLMRMP1A) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003HH9FIQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_teiSBbGEQT236
Oh and for power I just have a 12v to 5v USB adapter and hook it up to the ignition/accessory power in the dash. I'm not worried about corrupting the SD with that kind of shut down, if you are you could get a little more creative. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016XI9BJS?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
I haven't sorted out charging the phone yet though...
Yea, I know the max through the micro usb is 2.5 too but it's not designed to do what we all want. Been finding it hard to find a usb hub to run in a car. Just got a usb splitter like for a HDD, plug one into the Pi and another into a new car usb adapter and then the female into my pixel.
DeLOCK Y-Cable USB 3.0 A to 2 x USB... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009EAF0RU?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
So, I haven't tested the car chargers but I have a big morpie battery putting out 2 X 2.4A.
Even with no phone plugged into the Pi I get the lightening?!? Maybe someone can figure that out, plenty of power so far as I can see.
Best solution looks like a split usb cable like - DeLOCK Y-Cable USB 3.0 A to 2 x USB 3.0 A 0.3m https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009EAF0RU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tjWCBbRRNDCNN
Plugged into a QC charger and the pi with the pi being powered from a second port or outlet.
What about this? https://www.amazon.com/Duttek-2-Pack-Dupont-Female-Motherboard/dp/B06Y5C8RD6
And maybe you build a powered usb hub into your bracket. Then you can connect your phone to the usb hub. And only the data line from usb hub to the pi. This saves you from power issues.

Oh that's what cbxxxx was saying wasn't it. Have you done that? And it works? I thought usb chargers used the data wires to determine how much current to allow?
Edit- thanks for the advice, just ordered this Y cable that'll let me do exactly what you said. Hopefully that'll solve the problem
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NIGO4NM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9hdZAbX7R2GQQ
I'm using a 12v buck converter wired into a Y-cable and has been providing fast charging on my Nexus 5x (usb-c). Also powering some other devices with the convertor so it's not entirely necessary - you could just use a car charger for example.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CE75K0W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I actually purchased a USB cable with a inline switch (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075XMTQJC). That way I am able to cut power to the Pi at will. However, I am not sure if I am going to keep the Pi in the car or take it with me. Because of this the 3 hour timeout may not work for me.
I have the official case from Raspberry Pi and its pretty good. It doesnt come with a way of mounting so I am currently working on mounting in my car but it won't benefit anyone else unless you have a 08' Hyundai Elantra...
There is the SmartPi Touch case that has two different kinds of mounting feet that might work for most people

Will something like this work for you? https://www.amazon.com/48cm-Sd-micro-Card-Extender-Cable/dp/B007WYRO7O
I obviously want the OTA thing to happen, but implementing it is hard and time-consuming, so it will happen eventually, just not now. :)
