Your company should supply it -- it's an OSHA issue, full-stop -- but most of my guys brought their own as well. We had a lot of shooters / gun owners, so most of them had shooting ear-pro they used. As long as we wore something that was professional-ish looking, the higher-ups didn't care.
My default was an LG bluetooth headset, I used LG730s but this is similar: https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Bluetooth-Headphones-Refurbished/dp/B01J8YMGGY/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=lg+bluetooth+noise+cancelling&qid=1620999385&sr=8-3
Usually just left em in my ears, turned off, as earplugs. But they were great for calls and remote hands work. I liked working later shifts, like 7pm or later, cuz I could just turn on the music and knock out tasks.
We had 3M over-the-ear sets, and I wore them sometimes, but large headsets are kind of annyoing when crawling around under the floors or working at weird angles.
maybe three synology nas boxes With weekly backup onto USB discs. The data is mission critical – I cannot loss any data
These three things don't jive. If you really can't lose the data, you probably want a more enterprise system with proper backups.
Other than that you'll want a highly available DB solution. Influx is an option. Elasticsearch is another. Or just throw it into a relation DB. It really depends on your dataset.
requirement that no data touches the internet!!!
https://aws.amazon.com/federal/ Plenty of gov agencies can use cloud services.
I use this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009F3O8Q
A few of us who spend a decent amount of time in our datacentre keep something similar on their desk. I just like this because it smells like chocolate, rather than some grotesque flowery scent (as is so common).
Buy some home tests online (Amazon). If you test positive, go and get outside while it’s hot to sweat it out. Honestly, go on a 5 mile, 1000ft hike on a hot day (stay hydrated). And retest your pee. You might be worrying for nothing.

I've been using these for a few years in our data centers, and they are incredible. I can stand next to extremely loud equipment (Generators, Chillers) and have a completely normal conversation. The other person doesn't hear a darn thing. I can also drive 80mph down the highway with all the windows open and still, total silence. The radar detector barking at me goes through though!

I put a few items in. Really nothing is experience in the field. I still carry a lineman (Butt set) set for POTS lines as well. https://www.amazon.com/Triplett-TeleTalker-3330-Linemans-Telephone/dp/B00BLTESJS/ref=sr_1_12?crid=16DPGB7EVI8X0&keywords=telco+linemanset&qid=1661888463&sprefix=telco+linemanset%2Caps%2C103&sr=8-12
Flathead and be careful, i have seen a coworker use a small plastic automotive trim removal tool.
something from a kit like this.
Here is your new secret weapon:

That's a simple RJ45 Female to Female coupler.
A straight-through patch cord is just an extension cord to the roll-over cable.
Connect the roll-over cable to the console server.
Leave the roll-over cable coiled up if you want & have reasonable cable management in place to deal with it.
Attach coupler to roll-over cable.
Attach standard ethernet patch cord of appropriate length to coupler.
Does not need to be CAT5.
8-wire CAT3 will work just fine for serial console connections.
Done.
I know you have made the floor holes already but if you have to do it again I would think about purchasing a brush plate and cutting the hole to match, keeps dust and noise down.
Hi there reddit readers - Yes, we did increase prices on **some** models from the Server Auction. We only sent emails to customers whose servers were affected by the price change. That's why some people with Auction servers did not receive any mails -- they weren't affected. We have also recently sent another statement by email to the affected customers, including an alternative option for them. In addition, our page about our environmental protection measure is back online: https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/umweltschutz/ It was not possible for us to offer our renewable energy certificates for a short period of time. We therefore took the page offline as a precaution in order not to spread misinformation. Now we are able to provide those certificates again. --Katie, Hetzner Online
Here is what Indeed has for you:
I queried both "datacenter" and "data center" because the industry can't seem to agree on which one to consistently use and you get different data (or none, sometimes) if you don't search the exact spelling in a given database.
Edit: Also feel free to checkout /r/itcareerquestions for stuff like these. There are a lot of really helpful people over there.
> How would the total cost of ownership be lower than current alternatives?
Yeah... Cost + reliability + services in particular, what do you offer that AWS or one of the dozens of other cloud providers don't? Just being unique isn't really a good selling point if you can't provide some tangible benefit of the former over a competitor. No one goes looking for a cloud provider to host their software stack because it's unique.
For comparison, Amazon's EC2 small tiers are around 2 GB of RAM (which, in the cloud world, is really tiny) and cost about 2 cents per hour. Not to mention you don't offer any storage tiers, back up service, or many other features that are pretty standard cloud offerings.
It's very energy inefficient, plus a lot management/security overhead. Cloud provider is not going to do it to save money, if they do it at all.
But it's done somewhere. Check: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/
Hello, My name is Cathal Murtagh we sell the VisionID carts discussed earlier. Yes they are 100% customisable but not expensive. Here is a link to download our brochure: http://downloads.visionid.ie/product_brochures/MobileCart-MD6.pdf We are based in Ireland where some of the largest datacentres in the world are based because of our moderate temperatures. I have considered something like that but I'm looking for something just big enough to mount a monitor, dock a laptop, and have a full sized keyboard and mouse. Preferably not a tiny swing out mouse pad.
Something kind of like this but with a bigger top https://www.amazon.com/VEVOR-Trolley-Adjustable-%EF%BC%8CRolling-Tabletop%EF%BC%8816-5/dp/B088BJHJSD/?_encoding=UTF8&pf_rd_p=c4ab88b0-3d34-40f9-a53c-afc9e7652f41&pd_rd_wg=mXLF9&pf_rd_r=W7TRY6H5SCEWB7YPH7Q1&pd_rd_w=rrQIh&pd_rd_r...
> I've bundled all internal cables with velcro ties on one side, all external on the other. What's most hackish here is how I'm suspending the cables to keep them out of the way and not pulling on the switch ports - basically three velcro ties in a loop around a structural bit of the cabinet and then running the cables through that. There must be some kind of hardware to assist with this?
First, it's poor practice to bundle power cables with data cables. Separation of your high-volt from low-volt wiring will make things easier.
Second, what you're probably looking for are cable managers. Put one in, bundle your wires in there, then put the cover on. No visible mess, and much better airflow.
> I have no idea how to tidy power. And as far as any additional hardware to contain all this cabling, I'm not even sure how universal that might be and whether there's much specifically for these decade-old cabinets...
In this case, you just need longer power cables. It's better to have an extra foot or two or wire, than be 6" short. You can use basic velcro to manage that, just bundle the wire together (preferably in a loop, but a wishbone can suffice too) and put 3-4 piece of velcro on it.
Photos would help, but I think you just need a cable manager and an hour or two or staring at it in frustration [like most of us already do] and you'll get it :)
What everyone said + RAID arrays. Also some basic networkin, terminology, etc. Look into some basic Linux commands, glance at this, there's also pdf of it on interwebs https://www.amazon.com/DevOps-Troubleshooting-Linux-Server-Practices/dp/0321832043
For more context I was considering the following product: https://www.amazon.com/Electriduct-Tubing-Polyethylene-Flexible-Conduit/dp/B00G6RAFBK?th=1
I was hoping to get Yellow for Single Mode and Teal for OM3 runs of Multimode. However it doesn't seem like anyone manufactures teal wire looms at large intervals. If I could color code the wire looms based on the contents that would be awesome. We only consider using looms for runs that go outside of the existing tracking due to recent changes in server placement in the data centers.
There’s a couple reference books that I’ve found helpful for general info:
Data Center Handbook https://www.amazon.com/dp/1118436636/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t6DODb7ZJSH24
Maintaining Mission Critical Systems in a 24/7 Environment https://www.amazon.com/dp/0470650427/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_W6DODbJ3HR1XM
I am coming to that conclusion. Recommend any specific labels? I was looking at these.
bone mic headsets in conjunction with a radio set. You can hear the radio without sacrificing your hearing or ear plugs or music.
tech on the floor:
get information
radio > bone headset
send information
radio > push to talk + bad fan sound in bg, but thats not horrible if you know its going to happen
and cellphones work okay in ours but we dont have tall ceilings.
It depends which 7k you have, they're on the back of the chassis. The 7004 does not have them iirc. Have a look at this app, it has 3d models of most Cisco kit https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kaon.android.lepton.cisco3d
