No, I can't speak to that. I play with mouse and keyboard almost exclusively (with exception to Rocket League).
Even if it doesn't technically (or natively I guess?) have controller support, you could get it to work with something like xpadder or antimicro:
>Graphical program used to map keyboard buttons and mouse controls to a gamepad. Useful for playing games with no gamepad support
>better story elements
tbh I think the story elements currently in the game barely scratch the surface of what's planned.
http://empyriongame.com/story/ - it appears that the end goal here is to find "Empyrion" and save Earth. Based on the fact that nothing in game even references "Empyrion" except the title, I'd say the story's barely even begun.
I think you'll get enough enjoyment out of it to warrant the $20 price tag, and development is going strong so you will probably want to revisit months down the road. Right now I was unable to find a roadmap, last I say the developers wanted to do one but are putting it off.
This was their last one, which is only available from an archive site https://web.archive.org/web/20151207145643/http://empyriongame.com/roadmap/
The space breaks one was a big issue for me, but planets are usually very close together, and if they aren't you just warp to a new sector, which is just another map, unlike Space Engineers where it appears to be fluid transition with lots of stuff in-between.
It has potential, but I'm unsure just how much. Again the game engine seems very limiting, and I think they'll need to overcome that first.
Make sure you post this on the community forums and social media pages. Might get noticed a bit faster that way. Well done!
EDIT: Make some more tracks and let your creativity flow. Use the Empyrion Storyline to drive it! It would be cool to have a few tracks for specific actions as well like, combat music, mining music, exploration music, space flight music, etc. We kinda have that now, but in limited situations. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the feedback. We are planning to have planets of different sizes. The larger ones will be about 150 km^2 which means that a player would need about 60min to circle the entire planet by foot (see also FAQ on our website: http://empyriongame.com/?page_id=1314).
Ah yes this is describing a video driver/GPU crash.
You may already have all this info but I'd grab a copy of Open Hardware Monitor and set it up to log:
.. then leave it going in the background while you trigger the suspected GPU crash event.
Get the game saved/exit it as best you can and then look at the graphs for the GPU. I suspect you'll see either temps spike up or the GPU core power spike up/down as the load sits at peak for a bit.
If it's the temp, try cleaning fans, verify they are getting good airflow (not in a cabinet), and consider adjusting the fan curve setting. I can't stand hearing fans make strange noises as the RPMs shift around, so I manually lock mine to 80%.
If it's the power you might want to try borrowing a PSU for the graphics card to run off of exclusively. You'll see overclocking whores with a PSU devoted to each card so that power won't dip under load. :P

I've seen the roadmap referenced a few times in comments, however this is showing a 404 error for me, I'm not sure if its loading properly. Although I've seen robots are on the roadmap, I haven't been able to review the roadmap myself.
Thanks for pre-ordering. It seems that this issue "PDT verification" appears from time to time but normally your pre-order should have processed. To be sure, please contact us with your transaction number (http://empyriongame.com/contact-2/) and we will verify.
Thanks for all the answers, highly appreciated :) If you can/have time/could, please add that to the (very good) design doc you've got started there on your website : http://empyriongame.com/?p=385 :)
Oh man you're going to have so much fun with this game: http://progressquest.com/play/
No challenging weight balance hassles, no containers that get bigger if you stack them, no remembering not to stick mined fuel into the smelting furnace, no tricky spending of unlock points, no worrying about which weapons to use when, no struggling to build an advanced constructor, no worrying that the BP option won't read your mind..
Get a Y cable so the drive gets power from two USB ports
