GOB Song: well this one is easy because i've only actually done one - Until The Days Are Done and thanks to the music from Zuthulu and lyrics from all_aflunters i think it turned out quite nice.
Other Song: Even though it wasn't 'made' this year it had a lot to do with 2012. Gimme a break, I don't have that many songs under my belt. It was President Paul . Every stitch of music and production was done by memefilter and includes an entire orchestra plus guitars. It was the song that really got me into learning mic technique, proper breathing, and trying to expand my low vocal range. Yes, it was a political song and YES I supported Ron Paul for president. If you'd like to debate then find someone else, I'm not interested :) .
Forgot to sign up on time! Vocals here. I mainly like to sing metal (clean and unclean vocals) but it's always fun to try something different.
You can hear my last collaboration over here and the rest of my stuff on my SoundClound.
Hope to join forces soon!
So... I was over at my wife's cousin's place (there's a long story there) and we had guitars out and I realized that, while I could noodle, I don't really have much guitar music really memorized these days. I can't sit there and play Paradise City, for example. So, eventually, to show that I was a good guitarist, I pulled out We Raised The Flag and made him listen to that instead.
See, digitalskyfire was the vocalist and he also offered to do the mixdown, so I handed him all of the stems and MIDI and he went through and worked his magical magic to it.. and it was educational because he went in and removed bits that weren't necessary to really support the song, replaced the drum samples, etc. And so it gave me a good lesson for what I was doing wrong with my mixes before that.
Also, I really like the way it builds to a climax. A lot of my earlier songwriting doesn't have a good enough sense of drama.
That was my first go at GoB, too.
I think otherwise, my favorite non-GoB tune that I've written this year was The Taken, because I was really feeling like I had a complete song in the style I've been wanting to write in, even though I probably need to re-do the vocals now that I've gone through some voice lessons, fix the EQ, etc.
(Didn't want to start off with OP self-promotion, so I dropped onto the IRC channel and made some of them go first instead)
I would like to give vocals a shot.
I am a semi-formally trained vocalist, also have proper mic equipment and recording environment to get the job done right.
I have extensive experience in songwriting, mixing and can also play an array of instruments (piano, guitar, etc) if needed.
I wish I had something uploaded that was more recent but this and this will have to do for an example.
Thanks A_G1RL for handling this post (and much, much more), and sorry for the late post - I dragged her out on the town this morning. :D
Nice work, everyone. Wildest thing for me was hearing all your fave artists (TIL!), and then hearing them mashed up again. Cool stuff right there. Also thanks again to the songwars folks for getting in on it.
If anyone is curious why I skipped this round, well...
I think a few of these are probably overlapping, so I'll try to make some sense of it.
Best use of theme I think can be applied to lyrics and music separately, or maybe just to the song as a whole. Not sure.
Radio Quality is kind of two separate things; production and marketability. I'll assume you meant production here.
Remix award - I want to run a remix comp so we'll probably save that for a more tangible result than just potential.
Clever imagery is... maybe too subjective? If we were going with it I'd call it Most Evocative... it's not out of the question but not sure. (Searched for 'evocative' on Noun Project... weirdest showerhead I ever saw lol)
Rock God / Country / Beat Dropper / Hip Hop - genre specific awards are definitely opening a pandora's box. I don't think I'd be able to keep up if we set this precedent.
Mixmaster / Quality crusher - I think both of these fall under Best Production.
By Hook or By Crook - we definitely need this. Not sure if it's too similar to Most Marketable (I like your name, certainly a hook is good flair) or if it's worth having separate from that.
