In my experience, watching the show and then the books let’s you get a visual for what you’re going to read. This is the edition that I read, and it read just like any other book imo.
Oops, I should have said "new adaptation of the original series". I would normally say remake but it seems they don't want to call it a remake...

The copy I have is crappy tv ver.
You might want to check this out, the full ver. on daily motion
Hopefully linking to search results is allowed here: https://nyaa.si/?f=0&c=0_0&q=Legend+of+the+Galactic+Heroes+-+Central+Anime
These 2 torrents contain the entire series as LD rips with English hardsubs (ep 13 is a seperate torrent as the original copy was corrupt)
There are four main versions of the story:
The novels - the original story. Published in English by Viz Media.
The OVA - starting in 1988 a complete adaptation across 110 episodes plus Gaiden.
Die Neue These - a new anime starting in 2018. Has currently adapted vols 1-2 across 24 episodes, with a continuation announced.
The manga adaptation - there's actually been other manga but this is the longest running, starting in 2015 and currently 21 volumes.
In the novels and DNT Reinhard knew about the massacre and let it happen. The OVA changed it so Reinhard didn't know. I'm not sure about the manga.
You might get some different answers to this question depending on which continuity people are basing their answer on. The novel and DNT definitely portray Reinhard in a less sympathetic way than the OVA, especially in the first part of the story >!up to Kircheis' death!< which the OVA made a lot of changes to.
the main character that is most like reinhard in any anime i've ever watched is griffith from berserk. he's like reinhard if his moral compass was weaker. even the hair is similar!
berserk is really, really good. the first arc reminded me a lot of logh, just simpler and more action-y but by no means unintelligent or unenjoyable. watch the 1997 anime and read the manga!! you can watch the recent movies too but i don't like them as much. they're alright as movies on their own, but in comparison to the original anime i think they're really mediocre, and the animation is a weird cheap blend of 2D and 3D. (though the end of the third movie animates one or two chapters past the end of the anime, so it's worth watching just for that imo)
by the way, even if the novels aren't officially translated (YET! first one is released in march 2016! http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Galactic-Heroes-Vol-Dawn/dp/1421584948) but there are fanmade translations of the first one-and-a-half books..... i haven't read them yet so i can't attest to their quality, but i've heard that they are really good: http://scanonymous.tumblr.com/post/77022354970/legend-of-galactic-heroes-novel-translations-mark
i don't think the press release gave any details about that, i really hope they use the OVA style though. but i'm open to whatever artistic interpretation, as long as they keep the character development and philosophical insights intact
Guys - its not that complicated really. They're premiering the recap episode and Episode 13 (i.e. the first episode of Season 2) at the Expo. The full series 2 is airing this year, on crunchyroll. It says it in the article:
" Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These Second will stream on Crunchyroll in late summer / early fall of 2019."
Yeah I mean, if you were that offended that you had to explain a clearly subjective statement as subjective I apologize. If I may also be as pedantic, saying that you "disagree that they have 'done much better'" implies that you already know Sawano's entire discography, have listened and appraised each one, and came to the conclusion that Sawano for a fact didn't do much better in your opinion. So I would cast doubt on that as Sawano's discography is 17.1GB worth of MP3s: https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4812266 I suggest you give this a shot. I'm a huge Hiroyuki Sawano fan and have played his songs with the school orchestra, and have also listened to almost every song in that torrent collection (that torrent was released 2014 and has been updated regularly).
The Binary Star song in particular is, in my standards, not completely his creation as the chorus is borrowed from an extremely popular 80's hit. Imagine Beethoven copying an entire chorus from a Mozart movement, and this creation is suddenly lauded as his _best_. I can respect such an opinion, but the standards that applied to it must be questioned as well.
you can get the ebooks from amazon. (8$ each, i think.) just write the names.

Of course, there are other ways to get them (i have them in pdf, for example)....just look for them hard enough.
I'd recommend watching the anime first as there is no other translation or fan translation for the novel series.
