Everything you need can be found here
Scroll down to the 8th post and download that MediaFire file (Modified) ASUS ODD FW Changer + UHD Friendly Firmwares)
In there is a flasher and all the firmwares you will need.
Let me know if you need more help.
It sounds like it may have re-encoded the file. Instead of makemkv, I'd probably use mkvtoolnix for this. With mkvtoolnix, you can remux videos with a new chapter file with the names you want (and also change the audio, etc.) without re-encoding the video.
I personally use this drive. With a simple patch, it can rip 4K’s easily if you ever change your mind on that. Since it sounds like yours is a laptop, you’d also have to buy an enclosure to make it external if you don’t have a PC you’d use it on, but I’d say it’s worth it for how well it works.
Recently bought the 16D1HT on Amazon (third party) for $85. Was worried because the box did not look new (no shrink wrap), but the contents seemed to be packaged new.
The drive did not respond to the eject button. Curiously, flashing firmware with the tool available on the forums solved the problem. So, my guess is that someone unsuccessfully tried flashing the drive before.
It works with the LibreDrive feature.
I bought it third party seller on Amazon. Looks like it's now $80:

BW16D1HT all the way I have these in stock all the time flashed to LibreDrive and 4K UHD compatibility, thoroughly tested and guaranteed to work right out of the box.
I’m pretty sure that you can’t do that with MakeMKV. You can use it to rip the files from the discs and then use a program called mkvtoolnix. It’s also free and can be found here: https://mkvtoolnix.download
Just be very freaking careful with the cloth. Super soft, maybe micro fiber. The lasers are sensitive to scratches and I've heard you can't use a basic scratch remover on them.
The only thing I might recommend is an acetone fogger? for cleaning headlights.
I just got the Pioneer Electronics BDR-XS07UHD from

So far I ripped a lego batman movie and the 4k Army of Darkness Bluray on an M1 air. Couldn't get either to play from disk, but worked great after the rip.
Managed to play the batman movie directly on Linux Mint after a bit of work, didn't try ripping it. the Army of Darkness UHD didn't play directly.
I hear pros and cons about the LG and the Asus models, this one has been perfect so far. I'd have preferred a different loading mechanism, but for pain free ripping, I'm okay with it. What I mean to say is, I didn't have to do anything to the drive. Just plug it in, get makemkv, and have at it.
I am am someone who has used digital version. Not sure 100%, but I think after you have the digital file, you can use a program to send to DVD, it would depend on your software I think. May need to use handbrake to convert to a different file format first.
If you have a PC, I have used some of these programs on https://ninite.com (for dvd created from videos I shot) with no issue (InfraRecorder and imgburn is the one I remember best). The site also has handbrake (and uses legit versions). Have not used dvd since I moved to Mac though.
Thanks for the detailed answer ! I can confirm that all 4 files produced with MakeMKV only have 1 audio track and it is french only.
It is a very weird DVD or I might not know how the DVD files work. By that I mean that I can find french and japanese audio one after the other in the same .VOB file.
The DVD in question is Bo-Bobo Vol 1 (https://www.amazon.fr/Bobobo-bo-Bo-bobo-Coffret-int%C3%A9grale/dp/B001UEJFUG)
Everyone do yourselves and your discs a grand but not-so-grandiose favour and use the JFJ Easy Pro. For years I have used it occasionally and it works much more effectively than every single alternative bad advice in this thread. Hand-washing damages discs, dishwashing machines certainly damage discs, and laundry machines certainly damage discs. All of this nonsense is optical blasphemy. The Easy Pro is the only professional and truly safe solution. Invest and thank yourself later; I did.
I got the same drive and use it with this housing
I think most of the sellers use the Vantec USB 3.0 Slim 9.5mm but I could be wrong.

I googled it and someone on Amazon Japan said it is a Pioneer BDR-UD04. That review was from 2019 though it may have changed since then. Probably best to ask on the MakeMKV forums.
This LG drive is on Amazon right now for $100 and works wonderfully after flashing - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079LTC6ML
Ripped 5-7 UHDs with MakeMKV already. Love it.

Same, has worked without a hitch (purchased on Amazon 12/21/20) drive
I haven't used that specific drive, but a few years ago I tried using a Pioneer BDR-211UBK. At the time, it wasn't on the lists of recommended drives for ripping 4K movies, so I ended up selling it and bought another (I bought a LG WH16NS40 - though it sounds like some of LG's other drives, such as the WH16NS60 should work too).
I flashed mine with my NexStar DX with my LG drive perfectly fine. Not sure about the ones on AliExpress though.
I use this Screen Cleaner Kit - Best for LED & LCD TV, Computer Monitor, Laptop, and iPad Screens – Contains Over 1,572 Sprays in Each Large 16 Ounce Bottle – Includes Premium Microfiber Cloth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01054S5FM/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_1DY030V5P27K1RTAS0WX
I use Pazera Free Audio Extractor, it works great to encode an audio track from a video or audio file format to any audio codec you want.
Even DTS to AC3 or E-AC3. then you can mux your new AC3 audio with your video into a new MKV file
Is there no possibility to do it directly with MakeMKV?
Only to be sure that we speak about the same thing, this is the audio format I want to convert to: http://www.wavpack.com/
I'm not sure if you can directly rip just the subtitle track from a DVD, but after ripping the video file, one way is to then open the video file with StaxRip, which will extract all tracks (video, audio, subtitles, etc.) into separate files.
I purchased LG WH16NS40 from Amazon Warehouse. Using the patched firmware, it is running like a champ and have ripped over 100 4K discs and more than 200 BR discs for my Plex Server.
It's AACS encryption problem, to decrypt Blu-ray AACS, you need a Blu-ray Decrypter. I highly recommended ByteCopy to you for the following great reasons:
Reads DVD and Blu-ray discs
Reads DVD-Video(VIDEO_TS.IFO) folder, Blu-ray(BDMV) folder and ISO files
Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS, BD+, MKB v61, MKB v62.
Preserves all video and audio tracks, including HD audio
Preserves chapters information
Rip BD/DVD to lossless/uncompressed MKV container
Fast conversion – converts as fast as your drive can read data.
No additional software is required for conversion or decryption.
Convert BD/DVD to MP4 wrapper with multiple subtitle/audio tracks.
Add subtitles to BD/DVD and extract SRT subtitles from BD/DVD
Rip Blu-ray/DVD to FLAC, WMA, MKV, MP3, etc audio files.
DeUHD is a new Russian software. It is not stable now. If you guys want to crack 4K Blu-ray, I suggest you to use Pavtube ByteCopy before MakeMKV added the function. ByteCopy can rip 4K UHD Blu-ray disc and store the video file in MKV or MP4 container keeping 4K resolution.
AACS is one of the encryptions, You should use a blu-ray Decrypter which supports to remove the encryption (AACS) from Blu-ray.
I highly recommended Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac to you for the following great reasons:

Reads DVD-Video(VIDEO_TS.IFO) folder, Blu-ray(BDMV) folder and ISO files
Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS, BD+, MKB v61, MKB v62.

Personally, I prefer to use This multi-track DVD Ripper to merge two DVD to a single MKV file.
It can remove DVD copy protection so that you can rip commercial DVDs.
It can convert DVD to lossless/uncompressed MKV container to keep original video quality and multiple subtitle and audio tracks.
It can merge two DVDs to a single one video file.
Google how to burn iso images in macos, I found a few different methods when I googled it. Years ago when I used Burn, besides the built in disk utility app.
You have your choice between a modified BDXL blu ray drive running firmware to support 4K uhd Blu Ray backup (ripping) or an honest to goodness UHD Blu Ray drive also firmware flashed for 4K disc ripping that will Play Back 4K discs from the drive itself.

Look at EDIT (15.02.2020):
I believe the link under that edit has the flasher and all available firmware. I didn't check for your model but I recently used it for another Asus drive and it had what I needed.
Where are you even trying to buy it from? I don't see anywhere on their site to buy - just a place to download, and it still says "beta" all over their site.
Here is the forum post with the current beta key, good until the end of March 2020:
I bought this at Best Buy a few years ago: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-8x-external-usb-2-0-blu-ray-disc-double-layer-dvdrw-cd-rw-disc-rewriter-black/9243009.p?skuId=9243009. The good news is that someone recently came up with a modified firmware to make it UHD Friendly. I can confirm that I got mine to work, but your mileage may vary as it is a modified firmware that you would have to flash yourself. https://makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18933&hilit=Lg+bp50nb40 You can see an edit in the first post from September where they added support for UHD disks.
Yes, you absolutely can. Just find a model with "MK firmware" available, buy it, and flash it. Then stuff it in a USB3 enclosure and rip away. Not sure about flashing the drive from the enclosure, so you'll have to research to find a housing that allows that. Learn: https://makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19113
I think u/PoeJam is correct then given that you had to change settings in MPC to force 16:9. You need to edit the display height/width in the header using MKVToolNix and REMUX the file.
In MakeMKV you can deselect the tracks which you don't want in the GUI.
If you already have a bunch of MKV files which you've ripped, you can use MkvToolNix to edit what is in them. https://mkvtoolnix.download/downloads.html
mkvtoolnix/mkvmerge -o nosubs.mkv -S original.mkv
you could create a loop in a script to run through the whole nas
As far as I know 4k content is better played in other media players than VLC (i encounter playback stuttering there as well).
On my PC i use mpv ( link ) and it works great. On my android TV i us MX Player for 4k.
I hope that helps :)
(edit: works fine when I play those movies (mkvs) from my external hard drive)
Looks like this drive is what they call: Bus Powered. So the USB port must provide enough power to allow the drive to operate and this is probably your problem.
I looked this drive up and found the following Amazon product page and apparently the power problem is common as they have a list of common issues listed right on the Amazon product page.
https://www.amazon.com/External-MthsTec-Blu-Ray-Optical-Compatible/dp/B07SZKNRF2
Hopefully that info will be helpful.
i'm playing back on the PC where the rip happened.

I would need to get an external UHD blu ray drive but I don't completely understand how to make it work with MKV or what the dev firmware support means. Is the Archgon MD-8107S-U3-UHD able to rip UHD blu rays now with the proper firmware? Archgon UHD external Drive hgon UHD external Drive Amazon
Amazon user reviews said that it couldn't rip them but those were posted back in 2019.
I think you'll find you'll have a hard time finding an all in one adapter like that that provides sufficient power to run a desktop bluray drive. your best bet is to get a usb sata adapter that doesn't integrate power, then connect a separate power cord. I have an older version of this that has worked well with a variety of drive styles. https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-SuperSpeed-Adapter-U338-06N/dp/B01N0VKR6L/ref=sr_1_2
I recommend the Buffalo Portable Blu Ray player. I’ve done tons of stuff with no problem, it’s $93 but I think it’s worth the investment with the speed as well.

Bought this LG external drive a few years ago. Reads all blu rays and DVD’s. Reads most 4K blu rays too. Seems to be unavailable on amazon now but I highly recommend it if you find one.
LG Electronics External Blu-ray/DVD Writer 3D Blu-ray Disc Playback & M-DISC Support (BE16NU50 ) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IP8IBPE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QReLCbGZ70J2S
I have an LG WH16NS40. It's internal, but it has worked well for me, and I'm sure you could find an external enclosure to make it work externally with USB.
It's probably scratched. Worse case is missing foil. Hold the disk up to a light and check for spots. If you see any, its a safe bet you're SOL.
I've rescued scratched DVDs with plain toothpaste and Nu Finish applied with cotton balls.
From Amazon's product page, it says the WH16NS60 supports 100GB triple-layer discs. I've seen some 4-layer 128GB discs on the market; I wonder if it can support those?
I've already bought 2 optical drives for my new PC I recently built.. I bought the WH16NS40 because I couldn't rip UHD movies with the first drive I bought.. I wish I had found the NS60 earlier.
