Yes! The gravel riding here is excellent. Lots of forest service roads in the national forest. The arcadia area is my favorite. Cardinal bicycles has put together a list of local routes here: https://ridewithgps.com/collections/17733?privacy_code=Z9VqLMx3yfdc7rKk
You can find a similar collection for road and MTB on their website.
Software Engineer here who just moved from D.C. If IT/Programming is your long term plan, you may want to settle somewhere west of Roanoke (such as Salem), or very close to I-81. This will put you close to Roanoke still, but also close to Blacksburg, where there are many more IT jobs. When you are looking at spots, just keep distance to the Blacksburg CRC in mind.
I've not encountered any groups for learning programming, but there are many great free courses on Coursera. My wife just completed this one and it took things very slow and seemed like a good introduction. There are more advanced courses as well.
Also you can sometimes pick up text books on the subject for cheap. Libraries may have resources as well.
Once you've learned some basics, you'll learn the most by picking a project and struggling through it. Let me know if you want any more specific information.
Is it just a routine annual physical? If so, this is a pretty good guide as to what you should expect. I used to have Doctor anxiety when I was younger, try to remember a few things.
The reason you're going to a doctor, especially for a physical or wellness visit is for your health. So try to be open and honest about anything that may be bothering you.
Remember, not only are you their patient, you are their customer. If you don't like a doctor, their staff, etc. You have the right to go somewhere else and, if you do, let the new office know why you're coming there.
So I'm stalking you after seeing your post on fb/here about gofest, but wanted to comment re: mobility classes.
Eric Goodbar at FastTrack Mobility usually has a groupon for massage/rossiter services, but he also has done a series of classes on mobility work. I picked up the groupon about a year or so ago, and it was great for my shoulders. He offers the groupon price without the groupon if you call him, but I'd already bought a groupon gift card.
My son and his wife have a well on their property in Tennessee. You can test the well water for a bunch of different pollutants with the same test the professionals generally use and save yourself some money.
For lazy folks, use the "all events in city" app. Set it to Roanoke. Filter by live music. It'll miss some events, but it hits a number of local venues' schedules.
Once you get your trash panda evicted, I highly suggest running [this stuff(https://smile.amazon.com/Bonide-Products-2361-Granules-Repellent/dp/B002ITKVKU?sa-no-redirect=1) around the entire perimeter of your house at least every six months. Stuff works great!
I would recommend the "lowers tour" if you're into XC style riding. Stop by parkway brewing in Salem on your way back from carvins cove. https://ridewithgps.com/collections/18243?privacy_code=1U0pAsMKj4WR3sxQ
Awesome thanks for the advice!
I just built this route on Strava and i thought it looked pretty good. any advice or changes? I planned it counter clockwise, but would it be better clockwise heading N/E into Vinton?
Any good coffee/beer destinations on any of these rides ; )
Well, The Materia Project are local and to be honest, I could listen to them all night anyway. They're amazing! You can check them out here if you haven't heard them: http://www.reverbnation.com/themateriaproject
I have the opposite experience. I've had Ntelos (Sprint towers), Sprint, and US Cellular, and Verizon has WAY more coverage and less dead spots than with the others, plus 4G coverage.
If you look at https://opensignal.com/, you can see for yourself that Verizon has FAR more coverage than any other carrier.
What you are seeing may be based on your phone or possibly just dead spots for all carriers. We have both Android and Iphone with little to no issues.
We asked about upholsterers on nextdoor and three of the six responses recommended Citizens Upholstery in Vinton. I ended up finding a slipcover for next to nothing so we didn't use them but they do specifically do cushion repair, not just reupholstery.
CityLab did this great illustrated history of Roanoke: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-19/an-illustrated-history-of-urban-renewal-in-roanoke
In 1995 Mary Bishop wrote an article: Street by Street, Block by Block (printed in the Roanoke Times) but I can't find it online.
And also you can buy the book Root Shock. https://www.amazon.com/Root-Shock-Tearing-Neighborhoods-America/dp/1613320191
You can actually do this yourself with an inexpensive body composition scale. You can find them locally and online for about $25 - $30. Here is one, for example:. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N1UX8RW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_PXKYWJEFHKZYKC6XHZ0M
If it's an apartment complex like they're saying it's likely wireless congestion because everyone has their own wifi network and they're all stomping on each other's signal. Give this a shot https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubnt.usurvey&hl=en_US and see how many networks are nearby. It only takes one bad router to ruin it for everyone.
