I hate counting trich seeds and after hearing of someone counting 2000+ seed by hand, I wanted to make an app that does it for you. It's currently available on the google play store here. Please let me know what you think if you try it out. :)
I'm from Perth, WA, so pretty mild but wet winters, I don't put my plants into dormancy and they take the full rain over winter, then spring and autumn are perfect ideal sunny weather, and summer can get hot, like mid to high 30s, and we always have a few days over 40. Someone on one of the cactus groups on fb found this really cool website recently: weatherspark.com where you can compare your climate to others, it's cool to see how your home town compares to places like Lima and Matucana in Peru.
Scopulicola has the smallest spines, sometimes almost disappearing once the plant is full grown. This would be your best bet.
Some Bridgesii spines grow long and floppy, still pointy but not as rigid and dangerous as Peruvianus. Some bridgesii can still be spikey though so it depends on the clone. I would avoid Peruvianus and especially Cuzcoensis all together.
As for gloves I use elbow length animal handler bite resistant gloves. They're kevlar wrapped in leather and i have not been stabbed through them once. The elbow length is especially nice for handling bigger plants or moving pots around.

This bulb is working great for my seedlings:
GE Grow Light Bulb, PAR38 Grow Light Bulb for Indoor Plants, Full Spectrum, 32-Watt, Balanced Lighting for Seeds and Greens https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NNT3G7J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_8ZP5Fb7MD7P50?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have two now, plus two T5 HO 2ft 4 bulb units over a 3x6ft table. The GE bulbs are powerful and I’ve had to lift them higher a couple times to avoid burning.
You can always let them get weird then chop them once they go out again. Those LEDs on adjustable arms are a little pricey for what you get but they work well for a few plants cuz you can position them pretty close, I use a bunch of them to help with plants in the window.
Does your porch get some shade? My cuttings rooted nicely on my old patio with a couple hours of direct sun and more hours of tree filtered sun. Position it in a corner where it will get mostly shade. Just bring it inside if there is going to be rain in the forecast. Or, get a mini greenhouse. Could also add some shade cloth to a mini green house if worried about too much fun in the sun.
Looks good, I'd personally go with different grow lights though. These are pretty decent full spectrum bulbs. https://www.amazon.com/SunBlaster-Watt-Grow-Lamp-pack/dp/B00AKKUZ7I I'd also consider moving your lamps closer to the seedlings so you don't have etiolation.
Patience, soil with good drainage, feed it, water when it is drying out (don't over water!) and enjoy!
I have had great luck with "Cactus Juice" and SUPERthrive as food for my cactus family.
(Amazon links if you want to get some)

There are little "duster" bottles you can get if you Wana apply sulfer dry.
They make different types but this is basically kinda what you are looking for
yeah. they are all for liquids. you cant really "squeeze" a powder from a bottle. its more of a "puff" for powder. lol.
most people just sprinkle/pour/dust sulfer on
i personally use and prefer a puffer bottle. the bottle i use is an irrigation bottle like this one. it lets you apply the sulfer downward, without the sulfer in the bottle dumping out the tip
cut the tip off until its big enough to give you good air flow. then take out the internal straw/downspout that goes to the bottom of the bottle.(that only works with liquids).
the only other "tricks" are to make sure you have a good amount of sulfer in the bottle. if its lije half full it works better than almost empty. and then just shake the bottle to create a cloud of sulfer in the bottle, and squeeze to puff the cloud out the tip
works great for delicate grafts or tight crevices.
it covers everything in a fine yellow powder, and you should probably wear a mask.
Thank you for your time. Also I’m used to having a heat mat with no prob mean fire hazard (reptiles along with a freak accident with a lamp when I was a kid), will this be fine to use unregulated?
This light here but it's out of stock I think any 100w full spectrum including a spider farmer sf1000 will work well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GLLSC92/ref=cm_sw_r_api_i_PZVJXJBNGAKFGCB4E0FZ_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have them on the max sensitivity (100%) for 3 hours a day. I started them out at 2 hours and at 50% and slowly went up.
Ah, well my friend, you've come to that cross point in life where it's time to invest in a shelf.
Amazon or a local nursery. You want micronized sulphur not pellets.
I use this brand and have paid almost as much for the 1 pound shaker container.
If I am rooting something I'll use Eric Myers rooting sulphur. It's an add-on only item but he has a few things worth grabbing for sure. You get super vigorous rooting with it.
Yeah.
I use 12 gallon liners for half whiskey barrels like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Barrel-Liner-Gallon-gallon-Diameter/dp/B0046VHRV4
I buy them from a store (they are about $15) and drill some holes in them and use them as pots.
3 gallon (12 quarts) on Amazon for $25
the seller i used last time jacked the price for 3 gallons from $22 to $44, but this other seller in the link is reasonable.
Hey hey my friend, you brought up the topic of “dirt”… I’m simply saying that when it comes to container growing, substrate composition is critical. So much so that there are entire textbooks about substrates for container growing… for growing in-ground soil composition is a bit less critical, primarily because trying to modify it is a lot less practical… if the ground soil is less than ideal that can usually be compensated for by watering and fertilizing appropriately…
But I agree it’s off topic. I’m not concerned about the survival of the plants here, that isn’t the purpose of this sprinkler. They are cacti and are meant to survive extended periods of drought. However simple survival isn’t the goal here. I don’t manage my plants as a gardener does, more so I come from the perspective of a nursery operator. I want to push growth as much as I can, as opposed to letting the plants just do their own thing… these seedlings are accustomed to being watered daily with 50-75 ppm nitrogen (from calcium nitrate).
Most days here our air temp is well above 100 degrees F / 38 C, minimal humidity and weeks on end of completely full sun. Normally this would be a strongly adverse climates but with regular irrigation and 30% shade screen I can take full advantage of the heat. They have been growing like weeds and so my aim is to keep that going for as long as possible until the cool season arrives. They will survive regardless, but I want them to thrive, and to thrive as much as I can force them to.
meh... kinda. for sprouting seeds. yes, probably. anything over an inch or so, they are going to be starvinv for light
for only $10 more , you can get a REAL light that can grow an actual adult san pedro. with rated lighting output charts provided.
I wrote an android application (tlg) to help me make this. It has a feature to compare to the last image in order to stabilize things, plus this is really one of the better plants and timelapses I've been tracking. Would love to make an iOS version but unfortunately its a lot of work and taking the pictures requires a lot of time as well
i think you are going to be dissappinted if you try to use s bulb like this. anything over an inch tall is going to want stronger light and start etoliating. also, because its a single bulb, its going to be very directional and you wont be able to cover many plants.
the cheapest legitimate decent quality grow light i have found for trichocereus is this one. its a LED light panel that puts out about 500ppfd at the center from a 12" distance. this will actually sustain an adult plant too. for seedlings just back the light off a bit further.
i have 2 of the larger versions of this light (the UF2000 & UF3000) they are good lights and actually provide the rated amount of light promised.
my 2 cents.
You'll be disappointed with those type of lights. Look for something more like this. (I have no idea about that specific one)
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a powder that is used to combat Aphids, Spider Mites, and other unwanted pests on your cactus. You can purchase it at Home Depot or local nurseries, but make sure you also purchase a Powder Duster so you can apply it easily.
- Wear a mask when using it and around it
- Diatoms are tiny fossilized shards that pierce and stick to exoskeletons of tiny insects
- TERRIBLE FOR YOUR LUNGS
- You can duster directly or duster in a ring around the cactus.
- DE will rinse after after you water your cacti
- I use it for Stink Bugs and ants, as well.
r/sanpedrocactusforsale and see if you can find anyone local (or just order and have it shipped, they travel well)
another option would be to find some friends at your local friendly psychadelics societies and see if anyone can get you some cuts.

Full spectrum LED 300w grow light with stand, adjustable height and light intensity. I have a dozen or so small pots on a table with this hovering over it. I'm only a couple weeks into using it, but from what I've been reading it should work well. $45 on Prime. It didn't seem like a bad deal for how much light it puts out. Overkill for your current needs but will be useful for indoor growth in the future.
Well yes that would be smart since you are in England i would definitely suggest getting some supplemental lighting and even if its cactus and succulent soil if it is the miracle grow brand (it kinda looks like it is) its not going to be ideal i would suggest adding 50/50 perlite to miracle grow soil. With the soil like is now it probably wont die but it wont be doing the best it can I'm sure you could get some perlite as for as lighting i know amazon has a brand called mars hydro Limited-time deal: 2022 Upgraded MARS HYDRO TS 600W LED Grow Light 2x2ft Coverage, New Diodes Layout Full Spectrum Grow Lamp for Hydroponic Indoor Seeding Veg and Bloom Greenhouse Growing Light Fixtures Four for 4x4' https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VL8FZS1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_dl_24Y5D78DAKM9EF67WJBT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 if you put them in a bright window and have this guy about two feet above the plants that should be enough light to prevent etiolation
Spinosad works great at getting rid of thrips. I've used this is the past and it worked great. Monterey LG6150 Garden Insect Spray, Insecticide & Pesticide with Spinosad Concentrate, 16 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BWY3OQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_5XGQS2DMA7B6DMDSWYVV
If your going to use a soap and neem mixture make one yourself. I like dr bronner's peppermint soap and neem, using a very small amount of each. Premixed sprays are just too strong for some cacti. I also like using this product Monterey LG6150 Garden Insect Spray, Insecticide & Pesticide with Spinosad Concentrate, 16 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BWY3OQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_CN3PB7A62QV6MX4P1GQR
Could you wrap it in mesh? It might just climb it but if you get creative maybe you can wrap it to the top. mesh
I did not realize just how much wood and bark they put in commercial potting soil, ha. On my first grow I recycled an avocado bag with not-great results. I feel like the seeds/seedlings got lost in the varied terrain and that by volume there wasn't enough soil for them.
It helps attract and retain microbial life in the soil . But you would want to get a micro inoculate as well.
TRIBUS® - Seedling to Harvest Microbial inoculant - Treats up to 200 gallons of Water https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B4K8TGD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZPV6FPVRK3QJ7FE4NMJ1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. This is one I’ve just started using but there are plenty out there.
I've been using square plastic pots that have extra holes in the sides which have been growing well.
Amazon - Square pots
I also have some very very large perlite to keep it from getting too packed.
Amazon - Perlite
But like the other commenter mentioned, get something with lots of air holes or a material that breathes.

Walmart should have it, or most garden stores.

You could probably get by with something like a GE 32 watt LED bulb. It puts out white light. Would need to raise / lower it as needed.
GE Grow LED Light Bulb, For Seeds and Greens, Balanced Light Spectrum, Medium Base, PAR38 Bulb Shape (Pack of 1) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NNT3G7J/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_73EE7CAJJ533HTE6CZ7Z
Every other week if it's been dry, touch up after rain because it washes off. Mix with water at 3-4 TBLS per gallon and use a sprayer like this to treat a large number with ease. You can't leave it in a sprayer though because if it dries out in a tube it will turn to rock. Wash sprayer and spray fresh water after cleaning.
I bought my 1 liter solo sprayer for like $15. I don't know why it shot up to $25 but it's a great one and they have user serviceable parts.
You really can't over do it as a foliar spray because anything extra will run off into the soil and can be potentially absorbed through the root zone. I believe you can use less foliar feeding though, the amounts I have seen for root zone application seem really high.
well... i wouldnt mind being the size of an ant, finding a giant pill of MDMA that someone dropped and spending a week or two partying in your miniature rave box.
but for growing san pedro, probably not ideal. you can probably sprout seeds in it, but by the time they are 1" tall, they will want more light. full size adult trichs will straight up die with this little light. they need massive amounts (think about what a cannabis grow room looks like. ...something like that). also, full spectrum (normal "white") light is best.
if you want to have enough lighting for a few good size plants without going broke, buy one of these for $39 on amazon.

Haven't tried this out but I was thinking those grow lights with multiple poseable arms (like this https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08ZNG1M49/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_NCYXDQHZBETBHW86HKTS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) would be good for a columnar cactus bc you can orient the arms vertically, parallel to the cactus, and surround it so you get really good coverage
May work for seedlings, I’m not great at knowing which lights work best lol. I use a ViparSpectra xs1500 for my older plants, but none of them are over a foot really.
I found this it’s pretty cheap compared to other led boards but seems decent enough for the price. May be overkill for seedlings but you could always just have it further away from them.
Thanks for the suggestions man. One last question, how about this? https://www.amazon.ca/Spectrum-Flowering-Thermometer-Hygrometer-Protective/dp/B07P2YNV3P/ref=sr_1_41?crid=3BHMHRAVEQBY3&keywords=ViparSpectra%C2%AE+P600+95W+Infrared&qid=1643857611&sprefix=viparspectra+p600+95w+infrared%2Caps%2C195&sr=8-41
Reviews seem really good for the price
i use the UF2000 to grow mature seedlings and a few adult cactus. the UF1000 is under $50 and should perform similarly, just covering less total space.
for germinating seeds, i use something similar to the light you linked to, but full spectrum "white light" and with slightly larger screw in style bulbs.
if you just want to sprout seeds, you can probably get away with the light linked.
If you have any desire to grow larger cactus. anything over a foot tall or 1" in diameter, i would strongly suggest spending the $50 for a legit LED panel grow light.
Cut off to where the rot exceeds (where the green meets the brown) with a sanitized knife. I would add some cactus rooting compound. You can dip the cut end into the compound and it’ll start to root within a week depending on the cactus type. I have one called Rooting Compound by Midas Products. Worked great with my dragon fruit cactus!

I was learning android development a while back and I wrote an android application to help me make them. The app allows me to schedule my projects, check weather for the upcoming week, and basically keep things organized. Still have to take the pictures manually though so it's a little labor intensive. I pretty much I take pictures once or twice per week now, unless there's something I want to track in particular.
If you have an android device, it's on the play store: Time Lapse Gallery.
As for the flowers they definitely have an aroma! It's a very pleasant, sweet, light, perfume of some sort. Hard for me to describe really, but very lovely!

THIS solved my thrips problem with one application. Spinosad is a natural bacterial insecticide.
I've been looking at this stuff:
https://www.amazon.com/Lawn-Fertilizer-Concentrated-Simple-Solutions/dp/B06XB32CVV
which is about double the NPK figures in my Schultz Cactus fertilizer (2-7-7).
You should get them a house so they don't have to crash on your couch.
Oh most definitely…I’m getting better at reading digital copiesbut I still struggle with paying attention…nothing beats the physical version.
I have collected so many science and nonfiction reference books related to my studies over the years it’s insane. A lot of times I’ll just snatch books up if I see them use that a good price even if I am not actively interested in that topic at the time. And it often takes me like 6 years before I actually crack one of them open for the first time. But it is just nice to know that I have so much reference material sequestered away on my bookshelf for when I do need it. I have a ridiculously large research paper PDF collection but the problem is is that it does not occupy any physical space and so I forget all what I have on the cloud…
One interesting ethnobotany book haul I got a deal on years ago was Dave Pendell’s “Pharmako” trilogy. Haven’t really read then thoroughly but interesting style…seems to switch been artistic, historical and scientific tones frequently. Plus cool illustrations

The tan ones are Vivosun. The fabric is great, but the handles turn into micro plastic dust in just a few months in the sun.
Started using these instead.
I wanted lighter colored pots to help offset radiant heat, but straight up fuck those vivosun pots.
Not sure about that. Id reccomend something like this

I hit up this guy every so often. He has some peruvian hybrids and a bunch of PC really cheap but its random what he has and he doesn't list what he actually got at any given time. real nice guy; sells big pots for dirt cheap sometimes too.
UPDATE:
After 3 months, they have about tripled in height, but haven't really gotten much wider. How do you think they are doing? What should I be expecting?

So I just did the exact same thing treating my thrip problem after I was getting frustrated with constantly dusting DE every few days… burned the shit out of many of my nicest plants… seemed to have happened to the ones who had been more recently watered and/or still had a lot of moisture in the soil.. the more dry cacti didn’t get affected.. anyways I used some kind of “Safer 3 in 1 Garden spray” which is composed of Potassium salts of fatty acids and sulfur.. so don’t use that either.. but what I did find out that works like a charm is Spinosad spray… one application and all my thrip issues instantly vanished and not a single burn.. I sprayed at night after my lights went off just to be sure. But anyway, this is what I bought
Spinosad… it’s an “organic” insecticide.. that or dust the tips with diatomaceous earth… thrips suck I just battled with them but I won… the Spinosad did the trick real well after I was repeatedly dusting diatemaceous earth to keep them at bay but they kept coming back… this is what you want
Use a product with spinosad, this is what I used Monterey LG6150 Garden Insect Spray, Insecticide & Pesticide with Spinosad Concentrate, 16 Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BWY3OQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_g_KPT7XC4VPYQMVG5GCB6D

This looks like damage from thrips or a fungal infection. If you see any insects crawling on the surface use a product with spinosad. This is what I use for thrips https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BWY3OQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_4HPTGP8JVDZEM7XDFE7G
If it's fungal use a broad spectrum fungicide. I suspect this may be thrip damage from the looks of it.
I would but this audio book if it was for a road trip.
Elemental sulfur. S₂. This listing is the one I use. 3lb for $25 3 Pounds of Sulfur Powder Fertilizer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P3SXRJR/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_Q2XTDT91YG6Y3AVDF40M I also bought 25g of pure 3-IBA powder on ebay (rooting hormone) for about $25 and I mixed it with my sulfur, 99.2% sulfur, 0.8% 3-IBA, and I use that as a rooting powder. It's the same strength as Hormodin3, but a lot cheaper, and it maximized potency of both sulfur and 3-IBA.
I currently have two of these, they were recommended from a site that had info about Pedros. What’s your opinion on them?

Holy shit your not kidding. This advertises 1000 ppfd at only 100 watt usage.
Thank you buy the way for feeding me this. So from what I'm reading even at only a 250 W. equiv. that LED above performs better then the 400 W. equiv I'm using? Sorry it's just that blows me away.
What brand led do you use and would you recommend it? I'm going to go back to that search I know a few names were dropped in the threads I read. Looks like I'm getting a new light. Sigh just got these too, guess I have to find some more space to setup another area.

I'll add that I have LED (https://smile.amazon.com/Lights-Spectrum-Indoor-5-Level-Dimmable/dp/B085CDPSMR/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=led+grow+lights&qid=1630686665&sr=8-9) that I was using inside. I have two sets and had one set on my Loph's and one set on my pedros. I got an actual T5 and put that on my pedros and switched both LED to Loph's. The pedros LOVED the new light and all of them stood up a little straighter. Maybe they liked the additional warmth of the T5? I dropped it down real close to them. But I suspect that some of the ratings on LED grow lights are less than accurate. With the additional summer growth mine have enjoyed, I'm not sure my T5 will be enough anymore...so I'm reading up on the posts in the sub about wintering/dormancy. Good Luck!
I've got a bunch of extra chicken grit I was gonna try to buy haven't gotten around to it. My young koehresii like it alot but I can't imagine trichs will.

This will give you the information you desire
I’m just going to be setting up my little one, 15 x 25. Looking at poly panels, and a solid and heavily insulated north wall. Ideally, I would like to have them under pure sun when it’s warm, so I’m considering options.
For excess heat, I have 3 old 250lb Bayliss I plan on using for end walls, and possibly a top vent the length of the greenhouse.
Either way, I have another month to let some screw holes fill in with bone before I can do shit. :/
Cactus aren’t as easy to grow up here, but with a little extra work, they still get killer sun.

Yeah, I think it just is able to go to low temps and has a fan. I'm curious if one of these would work at low temps https://www.amazon.com/TOMERSUN-Blades-Powered-Burner-Fireplace/dp/B075F36YNK/ref=pd_sbs_5?pd_rd_w=iDwLe&pf_rd_p=409c42e8-023e-4951-9f77-4c63073a4537&pf_rd_r=H6JDBV2WBYHCKMDJENDW&pd_rd_r=d681b5e7-8714-4b29-a8f9-31cdbc960e5a&pd_rd_wg=YPucO&pd_rd_i=B075F36YNK&psc=1
Plastic Plant Pots,Small... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089LRF3F8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If you search “small plastic planters” on Amazon you will get a vast array of choices for succulents and cactus! The ones linked are really thick and strong and probably some of the best ones I have purchased on there. I have bought multiple kinds of the larger quantity packs of 3” small plastic planters on Amazon and those linked are the highest quality I have come across. The planters don’t snap into place on the saucers by the way but there are some on Amazon that do if you need that. The ones linked are also the best deal surprisingly for being the heaviest duty ✌️
It’s already etiolated. Could try a grow light but it’s gotta be super intense for anything bigger than a seedling. My bigger seedlings seem to like this GE bulb. I’ve actually had to increase the distance a couple times bc it’s pretty intense.
I have some LEDs that are working great.

I spray mine every 2-3 days, I’ve read once they are shaped like a T you can start to get rid of the 100% humidity dome. Mine has a dial for less/more humidity, you just turn the little circle to uncover more holes.
Get some heating mats, I have some off and some on just to see if it makes a difference. Heating mat is set to 75, it’s the way to go.
I have quite a few containers set up I was concerned about mold because it was my first time. Mine have some space, pretty sure they’ll be fine in the same container for up to a year. I’ll likely report sooner and give the little dudes some food.
I have this light which my cactus currently are exploding on growth. I just got it.

Theyre under 2 t8 14w 6500k shop lights from amazon. I saw them being used for a humidity dome on some guys youtube channel and I thought this could be a good option for my seedlings. I have some outside but my apartment only gets like 4 hours of sun in the mornings and it's mostly shaded.
I have never used the fabric pots but i see that you use them. is there a brand you recommend more than others from experience? I was thinking of getting these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G5XXHV1/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=A250SXES9R8F92&psc=1
Something like this?

Try grow bags/fabric pots. Since they allow oxygen in, the roots assume they hit the soil surface, and turn around. With solid pots they think they hit a rock, and try to go around them, causing the roots to wrap around like this. Grow bags make much more efficient use of a volume of soil, and lead to healthier growth. I had a setup where I bought two $25 16 packs of Philips led bulbs, also bought a sort of extender where it turns one fixture into multiple. I was able to get something like 200 real watts (between three fixtures) of led in a mixture of lighting temperatures, something like 3000k and 5000k
You have to pop the plastic caps off to get the best light exposure. Don’t touch the light, it hurts.
I went to go look for the ones I was talking about, I’ll put it below. With that and a fixture that can fit all the lights you’d have a pretty decent light with a wide light spectrum. It’d be a better price than the the 130 watt blurple one on amazon for $100+

I’m still learning, this is just my experience. cactus juice I really want to find a different feed or fertilizer before the next actual feed. I’m going to start doing some reading here before the weekend, if anyone has suggestions feel free to suggest!
