I've only ever gotten one years ago. After that I stopped using p2p until vpns became a thing.
Its not likely for you to get cut off for a few of them. Just do some research on a good VPN, I've seen people saying they got a nastygram while using Private Internet Access' service.
TWC's DNS services were experiencing issues yesterday; this does not mean your connection is technically down, though.
If this ever happens again, try changing the DNS server entries in your router/computer settings to an alternate set, such as Google's Public DNS servers. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

I did this right after TWC went down in SoCal. Fixed the issue immediately.
First step is to isolate the issue. Connect to the modem and test ethernet speeds. if Ethernet gives good speeds, the issue is with wifi. download [this](acrylicwifi.com/en/wlan-software/wlan-scanner-acrylic-wifi-free/) for windows or this for android and check the best channel (one as far away from other networks as possible). Default logins can be found here . Log in, go to wifi settings and change the control channel number. Also, see if there is a 5GHz network for your modem and if there is one, use that instead of the slow and interference prone 2.4GHz.
If the speeds on ethernet are low, then it's totally on TWC's end(unless you have an ancient PC).
Try this. http://www.ekahau.com/wifidesign/ekahau-heatmapper
See if you just happen to be bumping into a dead zone or if someone else's network is bumping you off and what channels are in use.
Much worse if your converter is set for High def right. Coax only outputs at 480i. You would be better off getting a HDMI switch. Like this : http://www.amazon.com/Fosmon-HD1831-3-Port-Switch-Pigtail/dp/B008GVOVK0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1444601085&sr=1-1&keywords=hdmi+switch
You won't find anything cheaper than $80.
Netgear N300 is $99 on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Wi-Fi-DOCSIS-Router-C3000/dp/B00IF0JAIU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1421551584&sr=8-3&keywords=netgear+docsis+3.0+cable+modem&pebp=1421551627748&peasin=B00IF0JAIU
Or get the N600 for $125: http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Wi-Fi-DOCSIS-Cable-Router/dp/B00IF0JAYE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1421551584&sr=8-2&keywords=netgear+docsis+3.0+cable+modem&pebp=1421551663937&peasin=B00IF0JAYE
