Maybe it's the combination of CST-100 on top of the Atlas V that is producing some unexpected acoustic effects?
In fact, if you read the linked article that this Ars Technica article is based on, it gives a more elaborate quote:
> even though it’s been working through challenges related to the mass of the spacecraft and aeroacoustic issues related to integration with its United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 launch vehicle.
So it seems it's not Atlas V but the integration of Atlas V and CST-100 that's producing unexpected aeroacoustic problems.
I know for SLS there have been windtunnel tests at Ames, I assume the same was done for CST-100.
The key word is AEROacoustic. It is not that the rocket or pad environment is too loud. It is the impact from the shape of the vehicle creating pressure waves against the rocket trying to break it in half.
Imagine holding a cue stick out the window at 200 mph, nice and stable; now put a relatively light softball on the end, it'd probably start wanting to bend all over and snap. It would create a turbulent/chaotic and violent flow that is also completely unpredictable.
It is important to note that the rocket being referenced by Elon is not just Vulcan Centaur, but rather the replacement vehicle for Delta IV Heavy. This recent roadmap shows Vulcan being uprated to replace Delta IV heavy in 2023 (This is likely referencing the Vulcan Centaur+ Long upgrade). Nothing ever seems to slide to the left in aerospace, so Elon has probably already won.
high five
Here's a hyperlink for everyone esle, for convenience.
The new names are a massive improvement, btw - I like the tip of the hat to Leonard Nimoy :)
I'd encourage everyone who never wants to miss a launch to follow Next Launch on twitter or download an app like Space Launch Now!
My advice: get some kind of a reminder app then! I personally use Space Launch Now, it reminds about the upcoming launch 24 hours prior and half an hour before the launch. And there are many similar apps too.
Better not miss the Sep 8 launch of the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission!
All right, I'm headed outside to watch the show. I'll update you guys when I get back in with pics I take if you guys are interested.
Edit: I'm uploading my pics now. You can view them as they upload here. I shot it all with my Samsung Galaxy S5 mostly using burst shot. (You can view the meta data with drive if you are really interested)
We don't know exactly, just that there were "challenges related to the mass of the spacecraft and aeroacoustic issues related to integration with its United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 launch vehicle."
The ULA Launch Store! They take around a month to arrive, but are definitely worth it. They have larger and smaller scale versions, these are the smaller (1:350.)
The Delta 2 was through Dragon Space Models on Amazon.
For those that don't know, /u/ToryBruno wrote Templar Organization and Templar Incorporated.
