There's Anim8or although it doesn't have a huge support base and is fairly limited compared to other 3d applications.
There's Sketchup but that's more of a CAD program and doesn't use traditional 3d modeling workflows. It's really good for quickly concepting 3d models without having to worry about topology or polygon counts.
If you're more into sculpting, you can use Sculptris It's made by the people that make Zbrush and it's surprisingly good. It uses an adaptive topology workflow so you can sculpt details at any resolution without worrying about polygon stretching. It doesn't have many features though so it's more of an introductory program to 3d sculpting.
u/GtheGenius, I found a somewhat good -and free- animation software called Anim8tor.
While I'm not an animator at all, just thought that might be useful for those of us who've never done it to try it out, perhaps? You can still find a better, more professional one.
Went digging and found some very old 3d models of a genosaurer i created after being prompted by this thread.
Firstly the super old ones in a program called anim8or a one man 3d program, its crude but you gotta start some where http://imgur.com/a/MqgTb
and then one a few years later in 3dsmax when id developed a few more skills, was doing this throughout a 3D class at college, never did finish it because i had to do the actual class work ha http://imgur.com/a/0isPa
It can be hard to stay motivated, but you need to find a reason to be motivated.
It ranges for a lot of people, some people have a passion for an idea: http://musink.net/about/mystory.aspx
Others have a passion for their daytime job so much they create cool related projects in their freetime: http://www.anim8or.com/home/author/index.html
While others just have a passion for the technical side (see /r/learnprogramming).
That said, you need to find your muse - what keeps you going.
If you are looking to have an everlasting feeling of "oh man this is awesome!" like when you first learn a new language or meet a girl, you won't get that. That is a fleeting feeling of lust/attraction... For what could be and what possibly will be.
Take some time to sit down and finish your projects. I promise that as you finish projects, especially those with which you have a vested interest in, you will get a sense of fulfillment that blows right past any "wow i love the way this new language feels!"
As for tips / techniques?
Seriously, if you are feeling overwhelmed because of a bad design choice, just keep pressing on - rewrite it later. Just enjoy the fruits of labor by completing the project and shelving it to get to the next grand idea.
