Well, at first I was pretty upset because the scraping was implemented without consulting us or any regard to scaling and actually created very severe strain on our servers.
Then I saw what the app was doing and that it wasn't trying to steal away ad revenue by linking to our release pages, and hey, I actually liked it too.
So I reached out to the dev, put in some optimizations, and then we worked on the API.
I had the option to block requests at the firewall level all along, and would have probably done so if the dev didn't respond and we weren't able to optimize the scraping requests in a relatively easy fashion. It was affecting APK Mirror and AP traffic, so I wasn't playing around.
You can read more about our interaction here https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater/issues/16, though we switched to PM on XDA later, and now Telegram.
There used to be an XDA app that looked for new updates.from different websites. I can't remember the name. It's pprobably not updated anymore.
Edit: ah. Here we go.

No idea of the status of the app. Haven't used it for a long time.
These only check for updates for installed apps:
APKGrabber supports updating from Google Play, APKMirror, APKPure, Uptodown & Aptoide.
APKUpdater supports updating from APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid & Google Play.
As someone already pointed out. The safest way to update the apps is registering via PlayStore. I will send you this alternative app. But be warned DO NOT try to update system apps using it. Yes, it can do it. I got tons of errors after I tried.

Will even update some of the less legal apps for watching TV/Movies but not all of them.
Might you be referring to this?

If so, I read something about Google changing things on their side, and apk updater has not been updated in a few months so it's going to have problems fetching updates from there.
Just turn off Play Store in your sources list (I'd also turn off Aptoide and Apkpure because security reasons), force close the app, and refresh. Hope this helps.
Use apkupdater (disable the Aptoide option in settings) and you're golden..
>APKUpdater is an open source tool that simplifies the process of finding updates for your installed apps. It provides similar functionality to an app store, but instead of depending on a single source, it aggregates the results from APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid and Google Play.
Also an amazing app to use on your phone.. which is kind of its intended purpose but works great on FireOS also :)
When you download the latest version you don't have to delete the old one it just updates, or you can download this Apk Updater https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater/blob/2.x/README.md it updates the apps you downloaded outside of app store
I'm using APKUpdater to notify me about updates from APKMirror for the apps I don't have installed via the Google Play store. Note that APKUpdater won't automatically update apps for you, it will just notify you of updates and link you to the download source.
I think it depends how much that particular app relies on play services. Some apps may lose some functionality, but the majority of the app might work, while others will just not run.
Also, this is another option to get APKs. It's similar to Yalp, expect it can pull from APKMirror as well, which is decently reputable, and other sources if you wish. It uses the same API to talk to the Play Store as the Yalp app. Yalp is designed for older devices, and this app is a little more modern looking.
APKGrabber, you can find the APK in the release section on GitHub.
Otherwise you have an option to "watch" a GitHub repo for new releases, you'll then get a mail or something.

That little used to be able to update the play store. I wouldn't recommend updating any other apps it suggests tho. I stopped using it when one of its suggested updates stopped my WhatsApp from working. Can't even guarantee it still allows you to update play store but it's worth a shout. Delete after updating. Hope it works
My first option was installing File Commander on CCwGTV and Send File to TV on my phone and CCwGTV. I downloaded APKs on my phone and send them via WiFi to CCwGTV with Send File to TV. Those files will be under Downloads in File Commander. It will prompts you to enable "Allow unknown sources" when you're installing them.
But I recently installed APKUpdater app using the method mentioned previously, now I really prefer this option, this app is pretty neat because it scans three sources for apps (Play Store, Aptoide and Apkmirror). It even updates sideloaded apps.
it's really helpful because I recently couldn't download an app from Play Store nor couldn't find it on the internet, so I downloaded and installed one which wasn't working correctly on CCwGTV, I guess some compatibility stuff, then I updated it via APKUpdater and problem solved :)
It's available here https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater
Update the play services
Put the play store back in stock version and let it update again, that takes a while
You can always use other safe alternatives like
Aurora store found on fdroid
Apkupdater https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater
Apkmirror
Unless Aurora store is updated to detect your arch, then play store would be better. I've also heard of apk updater but I couldn't get it to download anything.
If you do that, also get APK Updater (https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater), it allows you to easily update apps that aren't installed via Play Store.
(That's how I keep my NS Parental Control and PlayStation apps up to date)
