Wow, this looks like ass. Something I would expect from an amateur modder - the mountain looks smudgy, with very little detail, it looks like a typical lazy amateurish digital artwork. The bodies look ridiculous and completely out of place because the quality of artwork is so low. It's all completely out of place, the original had much better art quality. And pretty much all the other screenshots are the same, they look like a work of an amateur mod team.
Well, they did make a pretty good sequel, but i presume you mean another one? Thank god Bioware doesn't have the rights to this series, i wouldn't survive them murdering it.
I am however looking forward to the Enhanced Edition. http://baldursgate.com/
I agree with the /r/games comments about this screenshot looking blurry and terrible. However, the rest of them look like they fit into the game well enough.
It seems like most of the people complaining either weren't aware that the EE wasn't doing anything to improve the game's graphics, were living in denial, or simply forgot what the game actually looked like since they last played it.
I'm pretty sure that those are only DLC on the iPad version. From what it says on the official website, it sounds like all of that is included in the standard PC version.
Then you'll be happy to know that this fall, they're re-releasing Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 with both expansion packs, higher resolution support, new quests, new characters, and stability improvements for more reliable multiplayer (instead of 1998-era TCP/IP LAN hookups).
The best part? It's just $20!
Bioware is dead. Back last August EA said they were promoting Bioware to a 'brand', meaning any EA studio can put the Bioware logo on any crap that they make. Bioware the studio, just like the company, no longer exists except as a near worthless logo.
On the bright side, I think some former Bioware members are trying to re-release Bioware's finest work: http://baldursgate.com/
Yes. Both still hold up and are fantastic games. However, The Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is due out soon (Sept 18th), so you may want to wait a bit and get that instead.
Elite! One of the best games of all time. My advice would be to get Limbo on Steam- it fits none of your criteria, but it is a stunning game, hilarious and frightening at the same time- and wait for the release of the enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate- http://baldursgate.com/ - it is not set in space, but it is also one of the greatest games of all time.
Baldur's Gate. A new enhanced edition comes out in about a week so now is the perfect time to play it if you haven't already.
http://baldursgate.com for the site, but it's down right now due to the Godaddy issues I think.
It kind of looks like they have made the backgrounds full 3d, which is.. well quite different from the original:
This one is forresty. This one- the shadows of objects make them look 3d. This one you can see some 3d backgrounds.
Interesting that they are not showing off the new UI. Also these screen shots are not 16:9 or 19:10. Look pretty square.
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, along with their expansions, are available on GoG.
You could also wait for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition to come out. It should release some time in November.
It's a video game based around the Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition (I think) system. Most of the rules are the same, but you control the whole party down a variable but pre scripted story. It's one of the greatest western RPG's made in terms of story, but it's not the same as having a group of people. If you're interested wait for the announcement about the Enhanced Edition of the game tomorrow, here. It'll be easy to get into an updated version than the decade old original.
I would suggest the enhanced edition. It has more races and classes to choose from and also supports bigger resolutions and zooming, but the graphics are dated for today and the game picks up slowly, so it might seem boring.
Icewind Dale actually uses the same engine and is more action oriented but if you haven't got any experience with the games it might seem difficult since you have to build your whole team, where as in Baldur's Gate you find NPC's along the way.
Try looking up some youtube walkthrough/gameplay videos to see if the game looks like something you'd be interested in.
Hope any of that helps.
Age of Empires 2 with the UserPatch (fixes problems on Windows 7 and lets it run in window mode) might be good, but it doesn't have a deep diplomacy system
Defcon is a simple rts that can be played slowly.
If you plan on getting Baldur's Gate, you might as well wait for the Enhanced Edition to get released.
Yeah, I'm sure they'll never go away, I'm just surprised nobody has made similar games that go for the advertising model, or paid unlocks, or even DLC.
I'm actually looking forward to Baldur's Gate, but would love something a little more "casual" and never-ending. A MUD built to be played on mobile devices would be amazing!
Have you played the Baldur's Gate series or Planescape: Torment. These two games (along with Fallout) are undoubtedly the finest RPGs of that specific period.
The Baldur's Gate series consists of two games and an expansion pack for each game: Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate II: The Shadows of Amn and The Throne of Bhaal. You can get them on Good Old Games but I suggest holding out. An Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate is being launched in a few days!
I feel that Baldur's Gate has held up quite well with age. Both the gameplay mechanics and graphics are virtually identical to the Icewind Dale series, although I believe that Baldur's Gate is far better as it is more story driven.
The series is played as one big story arc featuring the same protagonist (which you create) and many of the same characters. Taken together it is one of the most epic game series of all time with literally hundreds of hours of gameplay if you are a thorough gamer.
Planescape: Torment is the undoubted king of RPGs. It features somewhat crappy graphics and a flawed combat system but none of that matters. Torment's storyline is the most detailed and thought provoking story of any game I have ever played. If story isn't your thing then Torment isn't for you. If it is then it is compulsory for you to buy it from Good Old Games right now!
Oh, and be sure to check the forums on Good Old Games. I wouldn't go for modded versions on your first run with the exception of the widescreen mod which is a must! This tiny mod will make both games look a thousand times better on modern computers.
No sadly it's not on steam, but it is on GoG.com. I think it's $15 or $20 for both games + their expansions. I would however wait for the Enhanced Edition of the first game, as they are making an improved version of the old game and adding more content, areas and whatnot to it.
