Debut : http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/
Quick snippet from a recording I did just to demonstrate the results. This was done at home so I don't have my 504 or any signal coloring, just a little usb mixer.
I used Debut by NCH software, it's actually not a free software - but you get a free trial. I don't remember if I paid for it, or googled a registration key for it (because they are widely available). I've been using this setup now for a couple of years for simple videos. I can run a line into my mixer for a backing track and it gets recorded along side the bass.
On a side note, I apologize any peaking, I had the mixer adjusted for my new RBX250 and it's a little bit quieter than my modded Bronco.
Most people here play on a Windows machine.
I play on a Mac, and among the free video recorders I've tried, I've had the most success with Debut:

It works fairly well, but in the free version you can only record screen to a .mov file (not to .mp4). Combine that with iMovie for editing and the process of exporting and uploading a 1.5 hour long match video can take 4 to 5 hours.
But hey, it works!
Excellent suggestion! I don't own FRAPS (and don't want a watermark) so I opted to use the Freemium software Debut which I'll use for my next skin screenshot!
OBS is Free. I have little experience with it, but it is commonly used.
Wirecast is great for streaming and recording. You can use multiple input sources and arrange them however you want. Paid version costs $700. The trial will watermark HD sources.
Debut is for recording only. You can only use one video source and one audio source at a time. It is cheaper and more simple to use than Wirecast.
You could try Debut screen recorder and video capture. Debut can record videos from almost any source - computer screen, webcam, streaming video or from an external device as well.
Hi, we are excited to hear you are using our WavePad, but we actually have a great software program called Debut Screen Capture that can record your game play while still capturing you play. This might work better for your project. We are not sure if this is a online-game, but if it is you can play the game and do an overlay of you playing all in one app. You can check out the details of the program and some screenshots here: http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/ .
NCH Software Team
Okay. I ended up digging around long enough to find Debut. It has a ton of options regarding file type, compression, resolution, quality, etc. You can caption, watermark, screen capture. And it's free.
Try using Debut video capture: http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html Free version direct link (non-commercial use): http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/debutsetup.exe Its nice software for screen recording or from capturing from a device such as a webcam.
I've never used any of these but http://listoffreeware.com/list-of-best-free-webcam-recorder-software/
I've used some other stuff from NCH in the past so I would probably go with this: http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/
What webcam do you have? The manufacturer usually has software for it built in.
OBS is pretty good to be honest, and allows you to do some pretty neat things by creating composites out of different windows, keying, and so on.
Plus it's free, so theres that.
There are software solutions specifically for screen recording for eductation though, that do things like highlight clicks, keystrokes, etc automatically which may be a plus for you. Debut is one I know if that definitely has that feature, and has a free trial too.
Have a look alos at Windows Step Recorder. It's not video, but it does allow for automated screen dumps, annotations, and so on for a more 'slideshow' orientated video if required. It's designed for getting users to reproduce issues for support, but I've heard of people using the images it creates for other purposes too.
I think this should do the trick if you're looking for something easy and quick! http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html If so, awesome I look forward to more art! If not, oh well!
Also, could you upload it in real time? Time lapse makes things go by so fast I can't tell whats going on, thanks again!

Editing: iMovie works fine, but there is a Vegas Pro for mac, and Adobe Premier, which you can get both for free easily...
I use Fraps on Windows and also use Sony Vegas Pro 11
Get debut video capture by NHC software: http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/ (Make sure you get the free version and not the trail, you still get 99% of the stuff the paid one gets you so it's well worth it)
For a laptop? or a desktop?
If it is for a desktop, you can get a single PCIe video capture card. The Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro is $250, probably one of the better capture cards out there. There are much cheaper ones though.
For a laptop, your are quite limited, I only know about the Startech Expresscard Capture card for $240.
Then get an HDMI switcher like this one for 4x for $150.
Then go to monoprice and get some long ass HDMI cables for cheap. Then you just need some cameras that can output at 1080p over HDMI. You could even use GoPro for this, they are cheap, have an HDMI output, and have pretty decent image quality. Just use the appropriate lens (it comes with a few), and don't use the rugged case.
You will also need some software in order to do the recording. Not sure of the quality, but this software seems to be really freaking easy to use. You can test out the software to make sure. But it seems to be very simple, and has the ability to record to FLV for youtube. Easier for the "old guys".
This page describes how to use this software which is free for non-commercial use. Give that a try maybe?
