EA's support for 64 players is in no way representative of how many players can be added - that's just how many players they're comfortable adding. [MAG](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAG_(video_game\)), which like many EA games was developed for consoles, allowed for 256 players fighting in a single map (128 vs 128).
Entropa Universe was a Sci-fi MMO which featured seamless loading, flying between planets, mining, hunting, combat, etc.
While CIG has been trying to figure out their own method of implementation, other work has been done on the very same topic. See SpatialOS, an underlying OS designed to handle games and simulations which need to track more entities than most current engines (without modification) are capable of.
The claim
> It's also never been done before
is disingenuous, in that yes some of the specific features mentioned have been done before. This specific combination of features have not, and most of the major ones might not be the norm (large player counts), but typically when people say it hasn't been done before they're ignorant of the advances that have already been made in the respective areas.
Yes, boundaries are being pushed by SC, but at the same time I can't help but think that some of the delays are coming from an attempt to do it all without looking at previous success cases.
Just think how much emergent gameplay would be created by guilds/players relying on each other for actual money that is transmitted within the game itself as easily as virtual currency (gold, isk etc).
Think NPCs dispensing actual money to your real wallet.
I think its a great idea, transformational even, especially with games like Entropia and in-game property transactions amounting to hundreds of thousands of USD.
It reminds me a LOT like the Entropia Universe where you also purchase 'land' with real money, can design and build whatever property you want on it and later market and sell the completed project for real money or have other players/visitors taxed for being on your land (you can also create villages/cities etc I believe and can sub-market sections of your land); mindark of course receives a cut of whatever completed build you sell.
If you're looking for a sandbox MMO, there's really only two that I know of that have stood the test of time:
I've tried them both out. You can play them for free, but you're very limited in what you can do. There are ways for free players to earn the in-game currency (mostly around selling products/services) but it's really slow going.
I know in Second Life, if you're a programmer, you can code your own work and sell it in-game. There's also some fun things to do like watch movies in a "theatre", parties, and they even do educational classes (in-game related). People do get "married" in game, as well as buy land and build houses and all that.
From what I recall, both games also offer methods to convert your in-game currency to real money. There are some "real estate" folks in Second Life that have made real-life millions. Everything I've read about Entropia though, they are like a casino and really do not like paying out. And you need to give direct banking information, something I don't feel comfortable doing. It's pretty sketch that they don't use Paypal.
I have to point out a second time, the INVESTORS that funded the development of the game are the Entropia Universe players. The development was fully funded 100% by the players of that game. So no investors pulled out, I don't know where you see that at all. If you go to Entropia Buzz and scroll down you will see information about the game and its development phases.
I used to make some money playing Entropia Universe. Actually I just withdrew around 8.1k $ about 2 weeks ago.
There are a lot of people who made a lot of money RL playing this game, especially during the beginning.
I played on Project Entropia for a while. Kinda fun but the ability to exchange real money for in world money is either good or bad depending how you look at it. Over all still a fun game though.
my wofe seems to have had a good time with Entropia. With a Female avatar, armor is cheaper, and there are quests in the game to get you kitted out.
If you're interested, I could PM her game name to you.
I never got a chance to actually play the game, but from what I read, and from watching the tutorial series, it seemed like an interesting game even aside from the real cash economy part of the game. From what I've gathered, it seems somewhat similar to the real-life stock market in that you can invest a larger amount of capital to begin with to start making money more quickly, or since you are a fan of creating macros, there are some people who just devote their time completely to gathering resources.
It also recently got an Android app which allows access to in-game things including the auction house from an Android device so you can continue "working" even when you're not around your computer.
i think Entropia Universe is the closest to a real sandbox, but be warned if you want to get far you will need to spend money, you can win money with the game too if ur good at it xD
I always enjoyed Project Entropia (Entropia Universe) much more than Second Life. Real-world economy with an actual game aspect designed. It had a great population for a while, but honestly Second Life isn't the only real economy virtual world out there. There are fun and viable alternatives.
That said, I never had too much issue with Second Life as a lesser option: disjointed, convoluted and sometimes a clusterf*ck, but certainly innovative.
You should try Entropia Universe.
If you like exploring, this is an awesome game. It's certainly not a kids game though, the demographic seems to be around the late twenties and thirties. Though it is free to play, it is a game about entrepreneurial ability and has a real in-game economy as well.
If anything, download it, put 15 bucks into it, and explore the beautiful worlds - this will give you hours of enjoyment. Then decide if you want to take it further.
I took some screens shots a while back: Here
P.S. Watch a tutorial or two to get the best out of it.
Entropia Universe is a free sci-fi MMO type game that has a reasonable character customization.
It's not pretty, from what I remember, but it gives you plenty of options.
