Tip of the day. Setup an google alert on
youremailaddres + steam
Once the results come in where you have that combination, go and remove it. Decreases the risk of this shit happening.
I wonder where much of this comes from , is steam leaking<pun intended>?
> Wil has to have a bot that trolls reddit looking for mentions.
Reddit gold gives notifications when someone does a Reddit mention (types /u/insert-your-username-here). For the web in general, there's Google Alerts.
> why wouldn't I just set up a google alert
First thing I wanted to know too.
When you offer a product that competes directly with an established player, differentiation is critical.
Edit: after logging in (don't make me log in to find this out!), I see you search:
Most of these sites have their own equivalent of google alerts. Ebay's even lets you filter on price, etc.
Also, are you sure Craigslist is going to be okay with you scraping them? They're rather well known for banning IPs and personally emailing people they catch scraping CL. I even worked for a guy that had exactly this happen to him.
Don't build a business model on scraping craigslist without their explicit permission. They'll take you down.
You can save a google search alert and get notified whenever that search finds anything. http://www.google.com/alerts
Try creating a search like "site:craigslist.org charge road bike" or something.
Let’s face it – Craigslist is a cruel, cruel temptress, chock-full of overpriced, common games and systems, as well as flaky and shady sellers who just seem to want to waste your time (this has been my experience over the years at least, for the most part). But sometimes… sometimes Craigslist can lead to something glorious, but you need to be constantly checking, and searching, and watching, otherwise the best deals will be gone before you even see the original post!
There are also other times when watching Craigslist like a hawk is just not feasible, like when I’m supposed to acutally be working at work, or when the in-laws are visiting, or if I’m at a funeral or something.
So, set up some Google Alerts to let technology do the watching for you. Put in the keywords you’d like to search, followed by a definition of what site to target, like “Nintendo site:http://detroit.craigslist.org.” I’m still fine tuning my alerts to get them as accurate and relavant as possible, but so far I’ve picked up on stuff that I may have overlooked, and I’ve been notified of new postings within an hour or so of them being created. Worth a try if you’re a busy person who doesn’t want to miss out on a potentially good deal!
TL;DR – Use Google Alerts to watch Craigslist so you don’t have to
I set up a Google Alert "as it happens" to my email (for now), because don't want to be googling "Google security check" everyday. http://www.google.com/alerts
Good luck everyone, I hope we get another couple of gigs this year.
I was thinking about writing a nodeJs application that fetches html from either a Google search for "Google security check 2017" or from Google.com/security and checks the html for changes (or checks both the search AND static page)(every ten minutes), then sends a push notification if there are any differences. If I do, I'll send I'll publish the code on GitHub.com/audstanley, or/and I will come here and announce it. The extra storage really helps a computer science student out (like myself).
:-)
You might try setting up a few Google Alerts. Then you'll get an email notification if an ARG gets mentioned in the news, on blogs, YouTube, and a few other places. Try 'alternate reality game', then tweak to fine tune your results. 'ARG' by itself, for example, will get you a notification every time someone posts about how bad their life sucks. 'New ARG' or 'is this an ARG?', or other phrases might work better.
From comments there:
> Astro-turfing is secretly setting up a fake front to surreptitiously put across the view of another organisation
If you think the email alerts thing is "astro-turfing", you may be interested to know that Google is doing the exact same thing. Shock horror.
Search RSS reader in the Google Play (Android) or App Store (iOS), then go to http://www.google.com/alerts/ to set up an alert for your stock symbol, choose RSS as the Deliver to: option, it'll bring you to a page with a ton of code... only copy the URL where the code is located, not the code itself. Plug that URL into the RSS reader, and use the RSS reader to alert you anytime changes are made.
You want immediate news? Two words...
I usually make two different alerts for each company I'm doing DD on...one for the symbol and one for the company name. I set it to 'As it happens' and 'all results'. The longer they've been set, the better they work.
I'll keep an eye out. Taking advice from another redditor when my motorcycle was stolen last week (out of my back yard as well), I set up some Google Alerts and have been keeping an eye on SearchTempest for the make/model. Still no luck for me but you never know... I don't have too much faith in the police considering the way they handled my case so far.
I'd reccomend setting up a Google alert on your name. Whenever Google indexes a website with your name in it, it will send you an email. If you find your name in other places like this, I might get worried.
Is your goal to specifically create this yourself or just to have it available for your use? If all you want is to be able to have it, Google Alerts will do essentially what you're looking for.
Here's a good suggestion for anything you want to keep track of: set up a Google Alert.
That way, you'll get notified of new things posted online that match the keywords you want to be notified of. You can even get a daily digest with searches.
So if you set up a Google Alert for "competition" or "enter to win" or similar terms, you'll always stay up to date on new competitions that come up.
Also, here's an interesting article about someone who has the same hobby as you, sharing how he does it: https://www.mirror.co.uk/money/how-to-win-free-competitions-5405606
> As somebody who does google news searches for Bernie Sanders on an almost daily basis
You should set up some Google Alerts instead and have everything sent right to you.
You can easily do this with google alerts:
Set up a query like this:
"keyword site:mathjobs.com"
Then you can choose what level of results you want, how frequently, and which gmail address you'd like that info delivered to.
You'll get an e-mail whenever your keyword appears on the site.
> Add to the blog a public Facebook page, a GoodReads account, and maybe a Twitter account, and LinkedIn account. Keep these professional, reference her blog in them and other writers and critics.
Came her to say this.
You need to start with your market. Who is most likely to read the book? Then you need to create relevant and engaging content for that market. Give something for people to talk about and share.
Start making connections with people. A good place for this is (http://twitter.com/#!/search) and start a google alert (http://www.google.com/alerts) so you know when people are talking about her or the book. If people are talking engage with them and welcome positive and negative feedback.
http://www.google.com/alerts - for example, for Dundalk, using the search query >site:rip.ie Dundalk
By default, it crawls once a day by the looks of it.
Sorry, didn't see this right away.
My preferred method is Google News Alerts as you can be specific on following a trend. But you can also set up, say, "Gamasutra" as a Search Query and then have all Result Types as "News" and have only the "Best Results" sent to your email on a timed basis. If they are design, it should be at least daily, but it can be as it happens, and a weekly basis as well. They can skim articles without having to browse the entire site (and get distracted), and then when they start seeing the same topic/titles, they can pay more attention. If they are into a specific topic, they can customize to that as the query as well. Otherwise, they can sign up for RSS feeds at various websites, or find a few good podcasts to view/listen to. Being informed should be a top priority for those looking into Design. To get a position as a Designer takes time, but years worth of knowledge will undoubtedly open new doors. My husband is going for Design, and he can overhear someone talking about old games and new games, with different mechanics and jump right into the conversation with anyone. This has, so far, lead to great contacts in the industry. But we're hoping to be Indie as that's where our hearts are. Working on our second game now!
My understanding is it's probably run by this guy. Whether or not that's true is debatable, but he obviously puts a lot of time and effort into PR for the DPRK, and is not subject to the blackouts you describe. As far as checking for people badmouthing DPRK, he probably just has a google alert set up for reddit.
An easy way to view this is with the Google Reader located here
Click the subscribe button at the top and past the link into the box. It will make everything prettier than looking at an XML parse.
The link again: http://www.google.com/alerts/feeds/05582054106312997714/13335201844543584754
Edit: RSS might not seem obvious, but it's there:
Users with Google Accounts can have their alerts delivered via RSS feed. Simply sign in and choose the "Feed" option in the "Deliver to" field.
Help me do shameless plugs of /r/TotalAnnihilation in Reddit!
Here are some links I use to find out if people have mentioned 'Total Annihilation' in Reddit:
This webpage lists comments and submissions which mention Total Annihilation (some posts/comments might not be related to TA - the game, but literal 'total annihilation'):
http://metareddit.com/monitor/fQM9N/total_annihilation
You can also use Google Alerts. I set it to email me of 'All results', 'as-it-happens' of this search query: "total annihilation" site:reddit.com
I find that Metareddit.com presents more updated and more search results than Google Alerts or searching Google.
Just check if someone else has already mentioned /r/TotalAnnihilation in the comments, to avoid doing double shameless plugs.
Few days late here, but I got a good idea. I just got an mbox 2 mini with the software for $100 dollars! I was the first to respond to the seller because I used Google Alerts. Just simply type in the search terms "mbox" site:http://yourcity.craigslist.org . This of course is only effective if you keep a close eye on your email. Good luck.
Yes you can, in three easy steps.
Enter in the search term: "site:reddit.com sniperchild"
Change the how often to instant.
Oh wait, its not that you get an alert when someone searches your name, its when someone invokes it.
