K-9 Mail will hopefully soon see the next release (which took quite some time!), if you are asking because it is outdated. I am running the latest beta at the moment and happy with that. https://k9mail.app/2020/06/01/Whats-Up-With-K-9-Mail.html
The newer versions are Beta, not a Release so bugs and features are expected to not work properly. The latest release is the one F-droid recommends, personally I use Fairmail until they fix Google Auth and IMAP issues. More on their webpage
Which is why I specified where it wasn't active and where most people get their updates.
I did a 30 second search on their GitHub (meaning I didn't look at how far along they were on it) and apparently they won't release to Play Store till they re-add Push IMAP IDLE: https://k9mail.app/2020/06/01/Whats-Up-With-K-9-Mail/
On mobile, the open source community has definitely got us covered. K-9 Mail is fantastic. The UI is sleek, modern, and most importantly, usable! Hell, it's easier to use than Gmail. Oh, and it supports PGP!
As for desktop, unfortunately, it seems that most people have moved onto webmail, leaving local clients to rot. Personally, I find Aerc to be an absolute joy, but it's fairly young. Fortunately, the lead developer is very responsive and, importantly, it already supports PGP!
It's not really laziness as posting on reddit is actually more effort than clicking on the link to the K9 website, but it is certainly annoying to see this kind of post. Did you do ANY form of research before asking it here?
K-9 can do a push instead of a poll, and in that case the notifications are immediate upon an email arriving in your imap inbox since it's doing an imap IDLE, waiting for the server to notify of new mail. Using that successfully with my Gmail accounts and custom Dovecot mail server at work.

I set all of my imap accounts to Folder poll frequency: Never and Push folders: 1st class.
I was surprised to find a rday old post on a 6 month thread. Also didn't expect this reply :p
I really don't understand why it's not fixed yet. I'm currently planning on switching to thunderbird mail. They're taking over K9 mail, but it's still under development. Source: https://k9mail.app/2022/06/13/K-9-Mail-and-Thunderbird.html
K9 is great and has been acquired by Mozilla. https://k9mail.app/2022/06/13/K-9-Mail-and-Thunderbird.html
NEVER trust on the google play reviews, most of the ppl complains on e2ee software because they can not recover their data if they lose the password...
And proton only provided a SINGLE ip under a judge warrant from a French antivist that was connected to proton without VPN or TOR...
Oh your comment got deleted by automod or something (clever automod, if true). I managed to catch it on my inbox though.
>He is paid by other sources than donations. Maybe you should look into the project before talking out your ass. He is paid to work on OSS. And now is employed by Thunderbird to work on OSS.
C'mon material re-design and your series of accusation happened before he was hired by Thunderbird. The getting paid part for K9 was simply donations. The recurring donation was hosted in Liberapay. I see you like to hide fact just to support your narrative. Source: https://k9mail.app/2021/02/14/K-9-Mail-is-looking-for-funding.html
Anyway that is beside the point. The point is whoever paid him (I think not you), are happy with his work and they keep paying for it. As far for other, he volunteers on working with K9, and has no financial obligation to fulfill random request from the public.
>It also wasn't his project, it wasn't his code to start with.
He is the lead mantainer, as far as K9 app goes he leads the project—but nevermind. Let say it's not his project and not his code: then why are you witch-hunting that one developer?
Since it is not his project and code, then make fork yourself, if you do not know how, then hire or pay someone else that can develop/make fork. I see you don't have answer to this.

Yeah, that's part of what is exactly the problem with their UI change. It's cumbersome to see everything if you have more than one account.
> sounds like a potential security risk
True, there could be some security issues with running an older version. The older version still has PGP encryption support at least. In the changelog of K-9, I do see some performance fixes (not saying there isn't any security fixes), but I think they're mostly for the newer version breaking things when they had the major UI overhaul.
Another alternative mentioned was FairMail which is continuously developed and has an optional in-app purchase for the Pro set of features.
I'm probably going to stick with 5.6 of K-9, so here's a link for anyone else that wasn't happy with Gmail.
There isn't really an easy way, but I did do a write up on using K-9 Mail with a self-hosted bridge and it's been great so far.
There are a few caveats though.
It sucks that the app is lackluster, but if you're tech savvy there are ways around it.
Could be Fairmail needs an "app password" just like K9 does. If so this might help and no doubt require a little trial and error.
Gmail supports IMAP. Note that Google also prefers a more secure authentication protocol called XOAuth 2.0 which is currently not supported by K-9. To configure access to Gmail in K-9, just follow the steps below:
Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings. If you have 2FA enabled for your Google account, visit https://myaccount.google.com/security#signin Click on "App Passwords" and generate a new password. This is the password you will use for IMAP in lieu of your Gmail password. Open K-9 and set up a new account. Enter your full Gmail address and password, then select Next. On the next screen, you can give the account a nickname and choose the name to display on your outgoing messages. Tap Done.

I know it's not for everyone but if people are interested I wrote up some of my findings on how to connect K-9 Mail to the ProtonBridge on my site.
In short, I made a Docker container that has the ProtonBridge with a small patch to fix an issue with K9. It proxies requests so that requests from any IP on the network are accepted, not just the localhost (which is the default for the official bridge). On my phone I Wireguard VPN to my home network and connect K-9 to that docker container. It's been working well so far.
No, I use it completely Google free. I don't have Gmail to test, I'm with mailbox.org and it just worked right away.
In the K9 documentation it says that K9 supports IMAP and Gmail but not GMail's authentication protocol. Maybe that's the issue?
Hallo! Ist K-9 Mail für Android noch gut dabei? Auf deren Seite (u.A. hier) siehts ja eher weniger gut um die App aus. Habt ihr da schöne Open-Source Alternativen?
K-9 is a great project. I've used it for years. Unfortunately, the latest version dates back to 2018. Its main developer is currently looking for funding. In the meantime, I've switched to FairEmail which is a pretty good alternative
The only one that comes to mind is Canarymail which is focused more on security. Paid, closed-source app and it sounds like analytics are defaulted on.
> We do use certain data we collect from you for internal purposes such as analyzing how Canary is used, diagnosing service or technical problems, and maintaining security. This includes information such as the marketing channel from which you learned about and downloaded Canary Mail, how often you use it, aggregated usage data, and other performance data. > > Users who do not wish to make their data available to third-party vendors can disable analytics in the in-app settings or choose not to use their features.
I personally recommend Apple’s default Mail.app until someone develops something like K-9 Mail for iOS.

> Some features that were available in 5.600 are still missing because we haven’t had the time to restore them. Some have been deliberately removed because we didn’t consider them important enough to justify the maintenance burden. > We would like to release a new stable version as soon as possible. There’s only one feature that we had to remove, but without which we don’t want to ship a new stable version of the app: Push (IMAP IDLE). After it has been added again, we’ll spend some time focusing on fixing bugs reported by beta testers, and then we’ll release the next stable version of K-9 Mail, 5.800.
I don't think so. There was some support for old versions of Exchange, but no recent versions.
https://k9mail.app/documentation/accounts/incoming_webdav
https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/wiki/K9MailAndExchange
It also looks like they plan to remove support for the old versions.

For Google you need to create an app password and it works fine.
I think only mailbox.org supports that ActiveSync on Android Devices.
Is there some reason you can't use CalDAV/CarDAV, ie with something like DAVx⁵ and an email client like K-9 Mail?
