Music Map is a really neat tool that suggests artists similar to those you like.
Edit: Music Roamer is a similar site that has the added functionality of letting you listen to some of the suggested artists music.
Try Music Roamer. Start with an artist you like then select another artist to find more similar artists. I've found some fun bands that flew under my radar this way. You probably won't find super underground bands this way, though.

Really nothing else compares to Cudi. I mean I listen to other like ODDFUTURE but that's to fill my old slim shady day wants. But here is a website I used to use when I felt I needed new music from others that may resemble an artists' style I was looking for. Just type in Kid Cudi or other artist and see what it tells you.
Music Roamer provides fewer results but more accurate.
I would recommend The Head & the Heart, Old Crow Medicine Show, Langhorne Slim, Darling, Tallest Man on Earth, Deer Tick, the Low Anthem, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Devil Makes Three, Lucero & Drive-by Truckers.
I believe your best bet would be to start a radio of your favourite SU song on Spotify and see what comes up, or use something like musicroamer with "aivi & surasshu" or "Steven Universe" as the artist. Keep me updated if you find something!

I used to discover music through turntable.fm and plug.dj (both of which have sadly shut down since).
I find that artist-maps such as http://www.musicroamer.com/ (with cross-relations turned on) can be quite useful to really get a geography of the genres and styles that you're interested in - that way you can look not only for particular similar artists, but say "I want to look for something that bridges the gap between these two genres that I like", or "I want to look for artists slightly outside of the genres I'm usually into" for example.

also, if you like the gorillaz i'd recommend beck, one of my favorite artists.
and based on what you said i'm not sure if you would like them, but my favorite band of all time is definitely the format. the lead singer is the singer from fun. who has that song "we are young" on the radio, but the format is a little more pop punk and a whole lot better.
