It looks like they were using Simple Machines Forum (SMF). I'm not sure how secure it is, but a quick Google shows that recent versions use SHA-1 password hashing which is at least better than MD5 (which vBulletin uses). But SHA-1 is still to easy to crack to consider passwords safe. Even if it takes the attackers a few hours to several weeks to bruteforce secure (long & random) passwords, you can't be sure which user they'll focus on first. Less secure (more predictable) passwords can probably be cracked in seconds.
Lesson to be learned here: do not ever reuse passwords on multiple sites.
It's called the "Smart Community", hahahahaha! and it's run by derek smart, hahaha! The oxy*moron* of it all, hahaha! It's anything but (definition) of smart.

So instead of paying the 10 dollars to get back into SA, or can't wait for Lowtax, he (ds) opted to sign up for a free make your forum site. Looks like his ~~games~~ product isn't selling ~~that well~~ at all. I guess he got tired of getting kicked out (semi banned for doxxing) in those other forums he frequent and start his own forum.
-
Guess what, I and I implore others, if derek smart starts with his doxing shenanigans, and harassing/bullying people (making threats/scare tatics to people to get what you (ds) want), just archive it, report him along with archived evidence/s to the people who runs http://www.simplemachines.org/ or and https://smartcatdesign.net/ for his blog site.
Ah, wonderful! Only *3 years, 9 months, 21 days * since Beta 1 was released.
PS - Actually though, I'm happy we finally have a gold release and hopefully I won't need to make patches and re-do modifications' code every few months. Let's hope the "urgent security fix! don't forget to update!" news is behind us.
SMF is using an OSI approved open source license, the BSD 3-clause license, it used to use a bit of a proprietary one for previous versions.
NSF forums is run on 'simple machines' software, not 'built from the ground up', but Chris did put a lot of work into that site, sure. And he is (well?) paid for his efforts. The Mods here aren't paid for anything (Echo does get 'paid' reddit gold occasionally by people he ~~tricks~~ ~~fleeces~~ wins bets against), it's all 'volunteer' and 'love of the game' stuff.

phpBB and vBulletin are still two popular options. Other possible options are MyBB (free), SMF (free), and Invision Board (not free), just to name a few off the top of my head.
I've used both phpBB and MyBB for some of the forums that I've created; MyBB's theming system is much nicer (table-based rather than semantic, at least most of the time), but its permissions management and overall security could use a bit of help.
Word of advice: Do not go with Invision, whatever you do.
Was gonna start trying the items suggested on this thread
The bots aren't posting for what ever reason, but the # of accounts they create on a daily basis is getting out of hand. Never really had a problem with it until recently.
I'm happy with SMF. I find phpbb to be user hostile and a major target for hackers, and on top of it historically having many, many exploits. SMF's track record is great and its easier/simpler to use.

You can host this at various cheap webhosts, like Bluehost.
>I do enjoy the layout of garagejournal and p15-d24, if that helps.
It looks like the forum you like is vbulletin. I have no experience with it.
I will tell exactly when I was banned from bitcointalk ... When I posted this video from metasploit community ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPwY5FylZfQ saying that he was shitting the first time people had hacked Simple Machines SMF because the bug http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=499927.0 ... He was scared because he have tons of bitcoins (Yes I also did donations to the forum once ) and the maintainer is not just ban people because of silly stuff ... So he did act just like every single dictator in the history ...
I think it has only been mentioned once in this thread, but I find Simple Machines Forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/) better than PHPBB.
I've managed vBulletin, PHPBB, and Simple Machines Forum in some form or function over the past years. I haven't touched vBulletin for several years (worked with it on a very large and active forum).
I found Simple Machine Forum more pleasant to manage, administer, and user friendly than PHPBB. They also seemed more security conscience at the time I switched to them.
I would want to see some plugins for forum software to incorporate a tip button linked to ChangeTip directly from a forum. They should partner with these companies to develop this function. ~ https://www.phpbb.com/ ~ http://www.vbulletin.com/ ~ http://www.simplemachines.org/
or even better we could make a site that isn't a popularity contest. just a simple forum. http://www.simplemachines.org/ offers a nice simple forum software that even has a karma system for those who can't live without those sweet internet points
If you don't mind paying xenforo is very popular with businesses, licenses are pretty expensive. For free you could go with phpBB or Simple machines forum.
Personally I'm a fan of SMF, I've used PHPBB, found it to be coded somewhat weird, not bad mind you just oddly which made modding it more of a hassle than it should have been. Vanilla2 was good for a quick forum but I didn't care for the layout much. MyBB is actually pretty good but very basic (not a bad thing if basic is what you're going for) I just needed more features and SMF has some built in SSI that made it really easy to integrate into a website.
For absolute beginners, I found Simple Machines software to be really easy to use and set up. They have tutorials and all the packages you need to get it set up. It's open source and free. http://www.simplemachines.org/
I've used and managed them for years, and never pushed my webdev skills too hard as it was all I really needed for the time being and I was tied up with other projects. If you decide to go this route and need assistance, feel free to drop me a line.
Вот нашел готовое решение - SMF. Выглядит вроде ничего, требований немного
> The following are required on any server intending to run SMF 1.1.x or 2.0.

> A webserver with approximately six megabytes of available disk space available

> About 20 MB of storage space on the web server for SMF files.

> PHP 4.1.0 or higher

Вот, что поддерживает http://www.simplemachines.org/about/smf/features.php
I like doing things on my own too. =) The SMF forum package has a couple of nice gallery plugins which have upload capability, but of course being forum software it's more focused on forum-y things.
There are some scripts to scrape/archive wordpress and forums into XML or SQL (makes it reasonably easy to import back into databases, or directly search).
While desktop apps are available for such archiving, Scrapy is often used to make such scripts.

I never really kept a portfolio, but I do have a few topics on simplemachines.org such as here and my modification profile here. I also am in the middle of developing an Xbox LIVE community here. I've tried doing work from sites like scriptlance and others, but I haven't been able to compete with the more popular freelancers there. I wouldn't consider myself fluent in programming, but rather fairly competent.
As for Foxwoods, something just doesn't add up since there have been a fair number of times I've been rejected for an opportunity because the employer didn't like my employment record, and Foxwoods is the only job I've ever been fired from. All my previous jobs were voluntarily quit due to finding another, better job. I don't know.
