Spiral Knights, the best way to describe it is it's a free to play Zelda the four Swords MMO. You can pay to play( at your leisure) or you can support the game buy playing free to play and purchasing from people who pay. It's a really neat system and is a ton of fun. Very hard in the higher tier as well.
There's a lot of larger scale games on the lists here, so I'll go ahead and say my favorite free game as of the moment: Spiral Knights. It's from the same people who created Puzzle Pirates and had the same creative and art lead for soon-to-be-released Slime Rancher. If you've enjoyed either of those games but haven't given Spiral Knights a go I highly recommend it.
Spiral Knights is a cute, fun, simple multiplayer dungeon crawler. It definitely has a standard "MMO" take on things, but the monsters, the environment, the community, and the gameplay all come together to actually be pretty amazing.
You can snag it on Steam or make a standalone account on their website. Surprisingly fast and easy to make an account.
If you want a 30 second snippet of gameplay, here's a little something that I cooked up a while back that's part of a larger project to showcase music and gameplay.
There's this game called Spiral Knights that got forked off for an Asia release but still as part of the Spiral Knights IP. Case in point, miracurously, a generic MMORPG clone appeared called Jedi Knights appeared, with zone names like Haven changed to Nabu, that used the games' assets directly, modifying the game directly from its original source code. I wonder how they got that source code ... /s
Seriously, don't China. China is the very reason to look into securing your game assets before you release.
Top-down dungeon crawler with procedurally generated themed areas with 3 weapons "classes"(Swords, Guns, & Bombs) & a variety of enemy types. The artstyle & music is also pretty great.
The game came out in 2011 & kinda flew under the radar, but I still think it's pretty fun.
http://www.spiralknights.com/ has similar play controls to Zelda but without the interesting places and characters to explore. :/
http://egoboo.sourceforge.net/about.html is a neat open source project which has a lot of potential but is not quite a completed game.
I got into Spiral Knights for a while, its a cutesy but actually badass MMORPG, a great time killer since you can't get sucked into it for extended periods time because you run out of Crystal Energy. Microtransactions pay for the games "time" if you do like it enough to drop a few cents on it.
Spiral Knights is a F2P MMO that does something similar, with the distinction that you can buy "energy" with both real-life currency and in-game currency. It's completely enjoyable without dropping a dime, though with less play time per day than most MMOs I suppose.
Could just have a second set of equips that are specifically cosmetic. Could equip greens there or whatever.
If anyone has ever played Spiral Knights, they do this. http://www.spiralknights.com/
They also do full armor loadouts that you can select on the fly, which is pretty awesome, and would love to see in Destiny.
Spiral Knights is also a Free To Play game available in Linux. Sadly isn't yet in S4L (Steam for Linux) but you can download the client from their website (it's Java-based).
I always try to find a game I can play as "my main" game, usually multiplayer ones since those are 'endless'. Right now I have returned to Spiral Knights previously I was a big Strife fan, but that game is practically dead by now.
Wakfu is very polished if you like turn-based. I'm not a big fan of turn-based.
Spiral Knights is a Java MMO action game and runs really well in Linux with IcedTea Java.
Other than that, I've been playing Drakensang, Neverwinter, Star Trek Online and World of Warcraft in PlayOnLinux
~~Blah blah, oh "free". Delete delete.~~
I used to really like the game Spiral Knights. Sometimes I still get really close to reinstalling it, but I know it will only make me sad; the devs have ignoring the endgame and veteran players in favor of new ones, and early content. If you haven't played it yet though, you can probably get hundreds of hours out of it before running out of content.
I've been mostly playing purchased games lately though, because I find the quality of free online games has really dropped.
Two I'm playing at the minute are Spiral Knights (f2p on steam) which has more in common with Diablo/Torchlight than WoW, and Glitch (browser based) which is made by the creator of the Katamari games and just as bizarre. Also, if you've never tried it, Pirates of the Burning Sea, although it has very WoW-like hand-to-hand combat, also has a lot of naval battles I thoroughly enjoyed.
Spiral Knights. Came for the TF2 hat, stayed for the awesome gameplay.
It's a top down, Zelda-battle inspired dungeon crawling MMO and is free to play. Upgrades are equipment based, there's minimal grinding for the most part. There's 4 damage types, and monsters deal/resist/are weak to certain ones. It has a great difficulty curve, that lets you find hard in certain depths with one set of equipment and feel accomplished with your achievement, then come back later and feel great that you can breeze through it with your better equips.
The one thing that takes a while to get used to is the energy system. You get 100 free energy per 22 hours, which caps at 100, however you can buy more energy with in-game currency in a player-based economy, or with real money. So often you may end up saving up energy to craft new equipment, but then have to wait a day to actually use it, which is a bit of a momentum killer at times. Overall though, it is great.
Spiral Knights Came out recently. It's got pretty simple hack'n'slash gameplay and a lot of variety in gear. Only problem is that playing the game for free is tough for new players but if you play in small chunks for a few days you'll start to earn decent money.
To sum up my opinion: I downloaded it, and forgot to open it. Even after reading this, I'm still "meh" about opening it. Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime.
Edit: I'm too busy playing Spiral Knights which came out today.
Spiral Knights. Its an MMORPG that has Zelda like elements. All progression is based on your gear. It features 4 man parties that explore dungeons and work together to proceed further. Worth looking at.
Minecraft is really more of a single player game capable of multiplayer. There are servers out there but you need to find them, and they can range from popular, to barren, to nothing like the original game. There is probably the perfect server out there for him, but finding it could be tricky. Although I suppose that's what you're trying to teach him.
If you're looking for a good first step for social interaction. There is a game called Toribash that has social interaction almost forced into the gameplay.
It's a 1 on 1 fighting game, but each match is filled with 7 or 8 people watching the match. So you're all watching the same game while you're waiting your turn to play. Social interaction ends up being a large part of playing with a topic to talk about. (the fight you're watching) If you don't like the room you can move on to a different one. I haven't played for a while but the community was very pleasant when I was playing.
Alternatively another game you may want to look into is Spiral Knights. http://www.spiralknights.com/ This one is going to be much less graphic as well. it involves dungeon crawling in groups of four (which the game can easily pair you up with) and trying to get as deep as you can. The gameplay is pretty good and often times the easiest way to make progress is working or trading with people, so it will promote interaction a bit more.
*Edited for some links
Spiral Knights is a casual fantasy MMO.
It positions itself as "free to play" (freemium) but in practice you'll probably want to shell out a few dollars unless your play style is one where you like to grind for about two hours a day and not play until the same time the next day.
It isn't as expensive or deep as WoW, but it seems very promising for a game only a few months out of beta.
Spiral Knights: Plays like Zelda Four Swords but with an online community, crafting, and randomized levels. It's free* with microtransactions. Best played in small bursts to avoid the microtransactions.
Vindictus: 3d Hack-n-Slash game with crafting. It feels like Demon Souls: Baby version (it's piss easy, but has great graphics and controls) This is free* as well.
What a nice way of calling the internet, only people who are already nicer than me would formulate "please learn" in such a way, it proved that I can work on myself.
Also not an indie game, but Spiral Knights is an MMO that has coop party play. It's a hack n' slash game, similar to a Link to the Past in playstyle.
It's completely free to play, in the sense that everything can be acquired given enough time and patience. There's a browser version, standalone, and steam version available for Win/Mac/Linux (though I'm not sure how well it runs on Ubuntu). Lastly, stop in to the sub if you're curious or have questions: /r/spiral_knights
I'll be using Spiral Knights for my examples, because it has an example of artificial difficulty and real difficulty.
Artificial difficulty is "let's give X opponent more health and more attack power." This is usually used to make games procedurally difficult when the developer doesn't or can't make multiple levels of AI. For example, Advanced and Elite mission difficulty modes do nothing but make the monsters tankier and harder-hitting; this is great for punishing players who use "stand in front and outdamage" as a tactic, but as an action-RPG, the Dark Souls mantra "it is better to dodge than to block" kicks in, and this just adds tedium to the gameplay.
"Real" difficulty, on the other hand, makes some of your earlier actions invalid, but lets your overall strategy continue. In Spiral Knights, descending to lower tiers changes the enemies you'll encounter, and they'll get new attacks and new defenses: Tier 1 mecha knights have a quick slashing attack, but their Tier 2 versions have a shield that they can use to block long range shots and a charged strong attack, and by Tier 3, they cover distance with their slashes and their strong attack fires projectiles upon completion, and they aren't struck with Shock as frequently as their lower-tier equivalents. In this manner, the same overall strategy, kite and hit them with long-range, still works, but the player has to adapt his immediate actions; spamming shots will just waste time and speed when the shield's up, as you're slowed while firing and reloading, and being caught in the reload slow can lead to them getting close enough to start their charge attack, which can do damage even after it's "finished" via the projectiles.
Spiral Knights. It's a top-down action game, similar to LoZ: Four Swords, but with online match-making. There have been some long standing balance issues, but the game certainly has charm.
Very sorry, I forgot a .jar was just a renamed .zip and Linux looks at file types and not just extensions, so it opens it as a zip. I am glad you were able to get it running finally, but now you should be able to play more java game like http://www.spiralknights.com/ too.
Buy one for me as I'd be willing to trade for a Spiral Knights account that has lots of ingame stuff. I'd trade a Spiral Knights account (Log-in) for the gift code. It's an MMORPG, more info on game: http://www.spiralknights.com/ I have 2 characters there. One has all stuff, which is: highest rank equipment and lots of in-game money and energy. (You can get Crystal Energy only with real money, or TONS of ingame-money)
This is better than asking for a free one... right? I got bored of the MMORPG, and want to play Minecraft.
Proof of my stuff: http://imgur.com/a/9d1dl

Tower Defense games. But as soon as I get into the gaming habit it slowly moves up to ooh a free MMO or I need to build that one thing and then I'm gone for forty hours until the real world knocks me down again.
IF your interested in a fairly simple, brand new MMO, that's free to play, check out Spiral Knights. It's more of a casual, hack and slash rpg, that seems to be fun to play. I've only played for about an hour so I can't say if it will last, but my non-gamer girlfriend was interested in trying it! Also, it has very low system requirements, and can be played in browser!
If the action/adventure part was what she liked I recommend a new action/adventure MMO called Spiral Knights that runs on windows, mac and linux and conveniently will be released 4/4: http://www.spiralknights.com/
Not out until April 4 (preview "beta" event just ended), but you might want to check out Spiral Knights. Free-to-play, top-down Zelda/Diablo style gameplay with other people. Like Zelda meets Phantasy Star Online. Can't say much for it being story driven. "Kiddy" art style may be a turn off.
