Although not the type of asymmetry you were thinking of, some notable examples of asymmetrical multiplayer done right are the gloom-derived games like tremulous and natural selection. They pit completely asymmetrical teams against each other with some rts elements thrown in. All of the games are fast-paced because of the speed of both the human and alien classes. It's quite exhilarating compared to conventional fps gameplay because of the low health and high mobility of the aliens and the need to kite alien melee attacks on the human side. Given the success of the recent ns2, we should expect more games in this exciting subgenre.
If you're interested in this you may also be interested in Tremulous which was a similar game, FOSS and based on the GPLed Quake III Arena (ioquake3) source code. Source at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tremulous/tremulous-1.1.0.zip
Unfortunately people don't seem to play it any more (it was released eight years ago) but it was quite novel, featuring base building and aliens that could walk on walls and ceilings.
If anyone else is interested in games with wall-walking critters, try Tremulous. It's an open-source Humans vs. Aliens multiplayer arena FPS built on the Quake 3 engine.
From what I can tell, latest update was 2011. I don't think there's really anyone left online, and the game's design and meta is unfortunately a little elusive (very complex). Still, you can still run a localhost instance and try out some alien wall-walking.
Wall-waking can get pretty confusing, especially in first-person and with the movement speeds as fast as they are. Using walls as a traversal surface is very interesting though, gives many opportunities and challenges to level designers, but has to be handled with care from a gameplay perspective. It's very easy to feel lost.
EDIT: Pre-emptive argument: I don't think Spiderman counts, since those games always make sure to orient you so you always know which way is down. Also in Spiderman games walking and wall-climbing are different, while in Deadly Creatures and Tremulous walking on the ground and on walls is fundamentally the same action.
You may really enjoy Tremulous. Alien team vs human team, as you get more kills you 'level up' as aliens, and can affort better gear as a human. What I really liked about it was the variety of things you can do (such as crawling along ceilings) as an alien.
>From a game design point of view, this is not even a game.
I'll just leave this out there:
You're wrong.
This game isn't a zipline, like most other games, where you are herded down a narrow corridor; where you are a character in a movie plot, and to proceed, you must recite your lines, with only minimal ad-libbing.
And it's not a sandbox, where you are left in a box with a bunch of toys and no objectives.
It's more of a scenario that you can choose to affect, however you want, inside the constraints of the game world.
What did you do when they first started combining FPS and RTS type gameplay, like Tremulous? it's not one or the other, but it's most definitely a game!

try playing tremulous and wesnoth, the graphics are poor but the gameplay is amazing - tremulous is a perfectly balanced FPS with aliens vs humans, the humans earn credits which buy guns and the aliens earn evolution points which allow them to morph into bigger badder aliens; the first little aliens can run on walls and move really fast, the later ones are huge and really strong - the game revolves around base building and invasion, it's can get really involved and wonderfully fun. there is rumor of it being upgraded graphically but.....
battle for wesnoth is a turn based stratergy combat game with RPG elements, its got a really good interface for mods and addons so user created content is really involved and often quiet inventive, single player campaigns can be brilliant but the game comes alive competitively, there's a ladder website you can sign up to and play ranked matches, as you rise up the ranks it can start to get really involved and chess like in it's detail.
both these games are open source so theoretically never need die, Wesnoth has recently been upgraded so the graphics are actually quiet nice now but trem could do with something, although it does run at a lovely speed and it's always clear whats going on in fast paced combat so it's certanily very, very playable.
open source games are getting good now, i've only played a few brought games in the last few years and i don't feel i'm missing out - hopefully as the scene grows we'll start getting to see some of the real power of the open source model.
Tremulous: FPS, aliens v. humans with interesting spawn building mechanic. Old but still cool.
Spiral Knights: What culminates with Legend of Zelda:Four Swords + Bomberman + Guns + MMO.
If you have a bit of a larger group (7+)
Tremulous (http://tremulous.net/)
Xonotic (https://www.xonotic.org/)
For a smaller group (all of these are on Steam):
Ultimate Chicken Horse
Speedrunners
Crawl
EON Altar
I don't think anyone plays it anymore, but there was a game long ago called Tremulous.
It was originally a Quake mod, but then it was able to go standalone. I got into it, and I would play a couple of hours a day. Everyone always wanted to play humans, so I would always go Alien. I sucked at first.
Then, some folks showed me the ropes and I would dominate. It was awesome, running around the map as the most powerful beastly alien destroying people.
I don't know the chicken/egg situation in regards to this and Natural Selection (or if there was another game before either).
Good times.
There's Tremolous, an open source strategic first person shooter where two teams (humans/aliens) fight each other in several game modes.
You can construct & fortify bases, buy equipment (humans) or evolve (aliens).
Try out Tremulous. Sure, it has terrible graphics, but it's tons of fun. Its main draw is that it's free, multi-platform, and open-source, but it also has great asymmetrical gameplay.
Oh btw, there's Tremulous!
I'm not sure it's the kind of thing you're looking for because it's a FPS and exclusively multiplayer but it is heavily based on base-building and tech-upgrades or evolutions (depending on whether you are playing as human or alien). It's a pretty unique experience, that's for sure.
Tremulous. It will blow your mind and it's free. I play and buy a lot of new games, but I always go back to it for its 100% solid game play. Best game I've ever played, hands down.
-edit: just read you can't run minecraft. That's absurd. You need to update your computer. Show us the specs of your motherboard and we can check if you can buy a video card or something. Surely it has a port for one, even if it's an older model card. Minecraft is so incredibly undemanding that this is difficult for me to fathom.
Paladins might work?
Quake 3 has a demo that's free to install.
If you're fine with a game not being on Steam you could look into Tremulous (http://tremulous.net/). It's a bit old but still a great game when you have enough people to play it (which sounds like you do) and it's probably one of the more unique free to play games I can think of that support a server setup.
Xonotic (https://www.xonotic.org/) could also work if you're fine without it being on Steam.
Urban Terror, and Tremulous v1.3 alpha or Legacy Tremulous (v1.1 / 1.2 Gameplay Preview)
Both free, both very light on resources (based on the Quake 3 Arena engine ioquake3, which came out in 1999).
You can play that game, it exists (but without the alien license).
My favorite version is Tremulous. I played a lot back in the day. It's awesome. You start as a little weenie alien, but you can upgrade all the way to this huge badass monster that can just chew through humans. The forums are apparently semi-active and there might still be people playing today.
The other option is Natural Selection 2. I haven't played it much, but it's cheap and people do still play.
Tremulous. It is pretty unpopular game. It's an FPS based on quake3 engine with some elements like building. Pretty old and hard to get into but entertained me for a long time.
Make sure to download 1.1.0 version, nobody really plays 1.2 becaus it's just worse.
Now granted, this game is pretty old now and may feel a bit dated. There aren't many dedicated players anymore, either. I've just always loved the idea of this game and wished there were more like it. It's essentially an RTS-FPS. It was more fun back in the day, but it's still a nice experience.
Basically, there are two teams: Aliens and humans. At the start of each match a builder makes your base with a handful of structures available, while the rest of the team defends against the enemy/hunts down their base to destroy it.
I haven't played NS in many years but I do remember liking the similar game Tremulous more. Same Space Marines vs Aliens including defensive structures. But in Tremulous there is no commander, you can just spawn as a builder class and make stuff. It would serve you well to read the manual before jumping in as it can be a bit tricky at first and there is no tutorial. It's free and open source so feel free to check out risk free here.
Tremulous is good, it's a free download
Also, you might try to download virtual boy and a few games and put them on a flash drive. That's what me and my friends did our senior year.
Because I know people are going to have issues, here's a guide to getting Tremulous installed and in the server.
Tremulous is a free open-source game based on the Quake 3 engine, which features strategical team-based first-person shooter gameplay (think Savage, or Natural Selection). Very fun and a somewhat active community.
Oh Hell Yea I remember Gloom. im a big fan of Aliens so it suited me just fine... it was a blast to play and it was a big Inspration to both Natural Selection and Tremulous
Distinctly recall some brouhaha over Urban Terror HD's announcement, specifically that they were dropping the open source policy and using a closed-source Quake 3 license to make their own engine, or something along those lines. Consider me educated on Warsow, however, and here's one more Open Source game to the list, although I'm not sure that it's what he's looking for: Tremulous.
They also score points for the nice dig at the Nexuiz console release.
