Ventrilo is a Voice Chat Program that has channels and can have many people inside one channel communicating with each other while using few computer resources and having minimal delay.
It's one of the most popular VoIP programs for gamers, together with TeamSpeak and Mumble.
For anyone who's curious:
We use Roll20 for the table top. No one needs a subscription, but you can get more from the site if you pay. (Our DM has the middle user level, but another in our group DM'ed a game just fine on a free account)
One of our members hosts a Ventrilo server on his home PC. There are other alternatives such as mumble and teamspeak. On a side note, Roll20 does have built in voice/video capability, but we had issues with it.
And for Pathfinder most of the rules can be found on the site I linked. Your DM will likely spend some money to buy a module or extra rule books for themselves, but for a player this is adequate.
Finally, we use various Google Docs for our character sheets. We've all edited our basic sheet to some extent for our characters, so I don't have a simple link for that, but a google search will turn up a number of useful results.

Edit: So, yes. It's been free for me and from what I can tell, you can run a whole campaign (DM and players) for free over the internet.
Yeah, I had to set one up last week actually, because my buddy's one was down.
Just head here. Grab the appropriate server program, install, forward the default port via your router (it's 37-- something, whatever the default that the client uses when you try to set up a new server connection) and then people can join the server view your IP. That's prettymuch all there is to it, took me all of 5 minutes to set up.
tone: friendly
Welcome to the game!
If you have friends you play with, get yourself a headset (even a cheap one) so you guys can talk over vent. I play with my two brothers a lot, and I pay for a 5-man vent just to talk to them, and it costs me (I think) $12 per year. Much nicer to talk to them while playing rather than typing everything out!
Even if you don't play with friends, you'll probably need a headset later on to talk to whatever guild you join when you guys play together.
Well, say we as a Reddit-SWTOR community got a 100 person ventrilo server. We would be able to make chat rooms inside of that server for all sorts of different purposes. A section for general chatting, a section for people to use while doing a flashpoint and they don't want all of the other conversations confusing things, anything you think of.
The Darth Hater people have their own Vent server, and I hop in there now and then just to see what's up. You can check it out by downloading the Ventrilo client (free). Their server information is below, if you want to check out the format of such a voice chat service. They have all sorts of different chats set up.
TF2Lobby is a GREAT way to start playing.
Outside of this, look at getting an IRC client and finding certain PUG channels.
Ubercharged.net also has a pretty decent guide on how to begin playing competitively.
If you're considering getting REALLY into competitive play, I'd advise grabbing Ventrilo, which is basically an audio IRC. It's a much better system than the in-game voice chat.
You can find teams and clans at every level, so try to find one competing at a level you're comfortable with and join them. Hopefully they'll register for tournaments, like the ones hosted by UGC and ESEA.
If you're willing to use Vent and follow the leader, then you could try joining Hydra premades. They don't care if you are new or low-geared, as long as you can pay attention and follow direction.
Don't feel bad if you get declined from groups, they almost always give healers priority. Just keep trying other groups until you find one that will let you in.

With each of them you should configure a push-to-talk key. Also, on Vista / 7 set the properties for the shortcut to start as administrator so push-to-talk works even when it is not the active window.
Hey, I want you to know, that I appreciate greatly your informed response. I know I responded with a very knee-jerk reaction, and I could definitely have had a much more appropriate and understanding response...
If you in the UK are very serious about this happening, I honestly think you should get in touch with me right away, or connect me with some people right away. I'm here in the US, but I have a story to tell, and I have some massive sway over here in a certain way...
Do you guys have any Ventrilo channels, to discuss things over the internet? Ventrilo is basically a voice chat program. If you don't, you guys should really get a server running, otherwise I could set one up for you and we could get people connected and discussing things. Ventrilo also supports recording, so we can document our discussions and whatnot.
I really honestly want to help, in any way that I can, and I'm basically ready to do so in so many ways, I just need to connect with your people. :)
you are correct on the invite/clan play question. Ventrilo is an application for windows/mac/linux and Andriod which does voice communication similar to how the PS3 handles voice chat. The only difference is you don't get any CoD whiners or trash talk since it's just us... ohh, and it works. Once you download the application, you can set it up by clicking this link/going to this url: ventrilo://jonahan52.servebeer.com:3784/servername=RedditVent
This should get you onto the voice chat server. Once you're in, you can click on the chat room you want to join. (I only see two at the time of writing, Killzone & reddit)
Enjoy the game, it really is fun when you clan up!
There is an overlay feature in ventrillo: http://www.ventrilo.com/overlay.php
As for a free mumble server, I really don't think anyone is offering such a thing. It makes no sense... you can get free VC with guild hosting etc, but the best approach is to just have some geek type in your guild host it on their private server. If this isn't an option, then there's little you can do, I'm afraid.
Was just talking about it with friends in a Ventrilo we use and were talking about Ventrilo sponsoring QuakeCon this weekend. We just happened to look at their site and holy shit the site is updated....then HOLY SHIT NEW VENTRILO UPDATE AFTER 7 YEARS!?
hey add me on steam its fsulaubach
Also I have my own ventrilo server which is like teamspeak feel free to use it at anytime as I made it public for everyone
