I use a self hosted instance of vtiger in my IT business. It has a ticket management module and a customer portal that lets your customers create, view and respond to tickets. It uses SOAP api so you can do custom integration from other apps. It has really useful workflow automation and also syncs with Google.
Do not sell code, sell solutions. Your client needs CRM software. https://www.vtiger.com/open-source-crm/ is open source and should be easy enough to customize to your customer's needs.
Figurati!
Now maybe your interview is already finished.
However, if you want to know what a CRM is one of the options will be checking on youtube. Here is one I found related to Zoho CRM when I searched on google for "youtube crm tutorial"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR1wGvx8pGw
Try a similar search and watch the videos on CRM preferably recent videos.
You can also try this link https://www.vtiger.com/ and take a free account and try it to get some hands on experience.
You can also download VTiger CRM and install it on your local PC and use it without paying any charges as this is a free Opensource CRM.
I have used it personally for many years.

If I understand correctly, their opensource/free/downloadable version doesn't allows Gmail access; as per this page: https://www.vtiger.com/cloud-vs-open-source/
Or am I missing something?
If you need a CRM there's vtiger. We used it for a while when we started our business but later went with a commercial solution because we needed something more specific to our industry (machine shop). It's been years since we've used it so I can't speak to its current state.

You need to find SOMEONE who thinks this is trivial, and doesn't see the bigger management issue down the pipe.
We've had good experiences with this https://www.vtiger.com/ , but it requires a lot of configuration and PHP tweaks. A PHP module to grab the XML feed, parse it, and update the backend MariaDB database is the way I'd roll.
I'm actually going to recommend something different than the rest:
It's a fully functional CRM, with functionality above and beyond Constant Contact and Salesforce, at a fraction of the price ($36/mo for the full feature set).
It will do the apooint pages and scheduling that you wish, but in addition it is also is able to pull lead form information either directly from your website or via email parsing and drop it into your sales pipelines so you never lose track.
It's also able to replace mailchimp, providing full email marketing and statistics as well as drip campaigns and conditional campaigns (if customer clicked previous link in an email, send them this email, if they didn't click the link, send this other email).
The functionality provided is astounding, and I've used it since 2006 to build two businesses with multimillion dollars in sales.
I managed to configure two CRMs that did the same for me in handling 10 customers.
I have a copy of VTiger which has done whatever I expected of it ( and I freely admit not being the most demandy... ) The backend is php, so hacking it has never been an issue ( for me.. )
