Dear /u/imyke and /u/MindOfMetalAndWheels.
There is an option for you to solve this issue: use free (as in speech) software.
Sure, the quality may be lower, but you will always be in control.
You could setup your own Kanban board server (e.g. taiga.io, wekan), and you would never be afraid of trello going away.
Sure, you will spend time and money on server maintenance and configuration, but it will be yours. Forever.
Good luck!I agree with the other commenters, that it will likely be hard to find people to commit at the start: if you build it, they will come!
There is Wekan an open source kanban board (a la Trello): https://wekan.github.io
Competing will make it harder, so in those instances you may be better off contributing to those projects than starting your own…
Trello is excellent. It has the lowest ( bullshit-embellishments / functional-stuff-you-actually-need ) ratio of them all.
There's also its self-hosted open-source clone called Wekan, but I have no experience with it.
Sounds like you want to search for Kan Ban style project management tools. There are lots on the internet.
Trello or Monday.com are both freemium web based apps.
Wekan is a FOSS alternative to Trello - https://wekan.github.io/
Although these tools are nos specifically for he purpose you describe, you might find them to work for it:

Please let us know what solution you opt for finally
You could use a combo of
To get a lot of the same functionality as Notion. Also as someone else said, Joplin is amazing and I've been using it daily for 1.5 years.
Taiga.io is fully open source and it uses Kanban, which should be easier to implement for the farm. You can self-host it.
WeKan is also pretty good, but less sophisticated: https://wekan.github.io.
Finally, remember you can use any spreadsheet to emulate a Scrum or Kanban board, you can even setup a physical board with stickies.
Kanboard is a very good alternative not easy to eyes, but the most complete https://kanboard.org
Wekan, is a bit more polished stetically... https://wekan.github.io
Both can be self-hosted and shared with others...
> Thanks for taking the time to outline this option. However, the fact that I don't understand everything you're saying, that you note it may not be the best option for tech-challenged people, and I don't have access to a server I control, means it probably won't work for me. > >
Yeah no problem. To further clarify, wekan is an open source alternative to Trello. Instead of the infastructure living on trellos servers, it lives on your server instead. For more info visit their site here: https://wekan.github.io/
Not exactly what you're looking for but https://wekan.github.io/ is a great kanban which you can self-host. Wekan is pretty easy to set up with Docker and has SMTP support.
Redmine is FOSS and also fairly scalable. Alternatively, there is Wekan, which is similar to Trello so Kanban-style PM software or OpenProject, which is free in its self-hosted version.
Multiple people in our Matrix room suggested NextCloud Deck, my idea would be Wekan, but I have no idea on its Android support.
There's Sandstorm, it's not docker though and would require porting. Basically it's a platform for web apps. Once ported there's a hosted service Oasis. Then you can do what Wekan does and have a Try on Sandstorm link.
The link creates a new instance of the app (a "grain"). Optionally if the user wants to keep the grain they must create an account. Later they can export the grain and load it on a different (selfhosted) sandstorm instance.
For a user a nice property of sandstorm is that apps don't really disappear if/when the author doesn't want to develop/host their app anymore. And the compartmentalized security (a key design goal of the platform) is really solid.
I set up a private Wekan instance as an experiment a while back. It's still on the dodgy side of "under development," but I keep coming back to it to organise new campaigns, so it must be working for me.
Hi,
I did install Friend 11 days ago and document most of the process here:
https://github.com/wekan/wekan/wiki/Friend#install-from-source

But that wiki page is still in progress, not everything is installed yet. Missing are configuring domains, SSL certs, etc. I presume that because Wekan's included Caddy webserver has automatic Let's Encrypt SSL, it could be used for Friend and Wekan, but I have not tried it yet. Also installing apps does not have all info yet, for example in Wekan FriendUp App source code you need to change iframe URL to Wekan URL.

Wekan is great, you can host it for yourself on a $5/m cloud machine (even along other stuff). Here is the detailed feature comparison: https://github.com/wekan/wekan/wiki/Wekan-vs-Trello-vs-Restyaboard

I used to look for a SW to write whatever I need in for quite a while. Ended up simply abusing Kanban style software. Now for ~years I have local instance of https://wekan.github.io/ running on one of hypervisors that I manage.
Es sind schon gutes Sachen genannt worden. Folgende sollte man sich aber auch unbedingt anschauen:
Krita: https://krita.org/
Ein richtiges Zeichen und Mal-Programm. Tolle Oberfläche - Super durchdachte Funktionen und sehr aktive Entwicklung.
Speedcrunch: http://speedcrunch.org/
Ein Taschenrechner mit Formelsammlung, (auf Festplatte gespeicherte) Historie und vieles mehr. Ziemlich praktisch
Wekan: https://wekan.github.io/
Ein Kanban-Board (Wie das kommerzielle Trello). Simpel gesagt: eine Aufgabenliste für Einzelpersonen als auch ganzen Teams.
