Doggcatcher is a personal favorite. Podcast addict is decent and free!
never heard of pocket casts but it looks really nice. I've been using DoggCatcher and I've been happy with it so far, it has a lot of options. But the UI of Pocket Casts looks good and I'd be willing to switch over.
Not free but DoggCatcher works well on Android Auto.
Really like Amazon Music. If you have Prime you get a metric ton of "stations" and music to listen to.
Google maps is getting a bit annoying under Android auto. They've plastered an obnoxious (and redundant) "destinations" widget on the map that you have to manually close -every- time you start maps. It doesn't fade like the other map controls and you can't fully get rid of it.
It used to pick a random destination and, disregarding mute, start shouting about traffic. Muting your music, car radio or more annoyingly any phone call you were on. I think they've fixed that, though.
DoggCatcher for Android has customizable forward/back skip times, if that's important to you. OK user interface and very customizable.
Die beste Android-App dafür ist meiner Meinung nach Doggcatcher. Ich nutze sie seit mehr als einem Jahr problemlos, und zwar auf mehreren Handys.
I'm a huge proponent of Doggcatcher on Android. I've been using it for years. It does everything I need it to, and does it well.
Doggcatcher (instead of PocketCasts)
It's served me well, and I don't see a need to change. I don't have to relearn anything, and I've been able to tweak it to exactly how I like it.
redditisfun (instead of countless other currently-preferred reddit apps)
It's nearly perfect. It's my most-used app. It mirrors the desktop experience, so it's just an extension of my normal browsing. I tend to keep any throwaway in a separate app.
I use DoggCatcher on my phone via android auto and there are skip 15 second ahead (and back) buttons on the console screen when it's running. You can change the amount of time in the app. If I was able to use the radio control paddles on the steering wheel it would be perfect.
The audible app plays podcasts and has skip ahead buttons but you have to hit the three dot (vertical) menu to pull them up.
I get this every now and then running DoggCatcher (another podcast player). Not as often as you seem to be getting it though. Maybe once or twice in a 30 minute commute.
Podcasts
DoggCatcher
I’ve used it for years, and it still holds up. A small negative I’ve noticed: it doesn’t show ff/rw on my lock screen (recent bug/change).
AntennaPod
I tried quite a few podcast apps, and this is a recent find. It’s free. It’s open-source. It’s pretty and has a good feature set. The negative for me: custom/manual artwork for feeds isn’t currently supported.
iTunes feed extractor
(This is not an app.) I tend to discover podcasts from sources outside of the actual podcast app(s) I’m using. Often that means I’ll be searching for RSS feeds, with varying degrees of luck. This site helps a lot if the first/only result is iOS-friendly.
Music
Google Play Music
It might seem obvious, but I think it’s often misunderstood/overlooked. (I’ve had a tech-savvy coworker assume that all functions required a subscription). I use it to backup and stream library. It’s a nice perk that it’s also available via browser.
Google Play Music Manager
(This is not an app.) It’s a simple application to sync/upload library.
MusicBee
(This is not an app.) This is alternative PC library player/manager, essentially an iTunes replacement. I’ve found that it’s extremely useful in editing metadata and cover art.
Phonograph Music Player
It’s an attractive player that I liked for playing locally-saved media. (I’ve since switched to using Google Play Music to stream my uploaded library.)
Other
Volume Notification
It places a customizable, always-present notification. It makes it much easier to change the media volume level without starting to play media My use: I prefer to ride the “quiet car” for the train portion of my commute. Checking the media volume is useful when I’m using bluetooth headphones because it lets me avoid the initial blast of noise (a remnant from having my car’s bluetooth level raised).
Use Doggcatcher. I've been using it for years.

Baby, I'm on Android.
And I use the paid app DoggCatcher. And it looks like it'll set you back $3 US
I first heard about it on Lifehacker.
Lots of folks around here rave about Pocket Casts and it's beautiful design. So I tried it out yesterday and it does look great.
However it doesn't have my ultra controlling nerd shit. DoggCatcher has Global settings that are by default applied to all of your feeds, such as how many episodes you want downloaded and Wi-fi only, etc. You don't have to go in and edit them all by hand (which I believe you have to do on Pocket Casts).
My favorite thing, that I didn't realize was even a big deal, is in the following scenario. It is very re-listener friendly. We are currently involved with a re-listen over on /r/HollywoodHandbook , so I want to have a number of eps on hand. I can go into my HH feed and set it to download when I'm at home the 5 oldest unlistened-to episodes. So I always have 5 eps from the bottom on hand, ready for me to take painstaking notes on.
Pocket Casts does have some cool features like start or stop particular feeds at certain second intervals, so you can remove the "Wolf Dead" tag from Earwolf shows, etc. This isn't present on Doggcatcher.
It also doesn't keep the (often terrifying) listening statistics. Although it does use the Google Play player, which can scrobble to Last.fm, for a poor, rigged approximation of this feature.
I use the damn thing a whole bunch so if you have any relevant questions hmu papa
EDIT: Another cool thing, that I don't know if it's available elsewhere, is the "Virtual Feed" functionality. If you download, say, the CBB live eps, or a DLM premium ep, or I guess even an audio book, you can pick a folder off you phone and set it as a "virtual feed." It shows up on the grid with all your podcast RSS feeds, with the title of your folder, and you can play them with the skip forward/backward, variable speed, remembering where-you-are & done/new functionality you're used to in a podcast player. Holler if this is possible in other apps
We're on TuneIn if that helps. Also what phone do you have? Our 'main' audience is our podcast listeners. So you can just look for us in the Podcast App / iTunes on Apple devices. Or for Android there are many options. Personally I use DogCatcher but there are others like Podcast Republic
Most apps let you search for a podcast, but our direct feed url is http://laveradio.com/feed/laveradio.xml.
That will then automatically download the show to your device for listening whenever you wish.
I use DoggCatcher. I prefer it over PocketCasts.
I use the DoggCatcher app for podcasts, and it let me set up a custom feed no problem
Doggcatcher on Android is awesome.
I'm on the road a lot .. if you like podcasts then check out Dogcatcher (there is a free app version too) ... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snoggdoggler.android.applications.doggcatcher.v1_0

Doggcatcher is currently on sale - I'm using PocketCasts atm, but I've heard some people saying that they think DoggCatcher is the best one - you don't have, by chance, experience with this one?
PocketCasts is a horrible app, I just uninstalled it for refund an hour ago. DoggCatcher ($1.99) is a much better podcast app even if it lacks Chromecast support.
I'd also suggest lastpass is a good value investment, not just for your phone but for all of your devices.
Lastly, I'd suggest Tasker is a must have app.
