Tip: If you don't want to pay for YouTube Red, just install the "AudioPocket" app.
You can then 'share' the YT clip to the app and the app will stream it, so you can go back to browsing Reddit (or whatever) while it plays.

There are a few apps that allow background play too. I just scrolled literally past a post by a developer promoting an app that does precisely that.

AudioPocket or YouTube Music (not Google's) on XDA. Not only do they both allow for screen-off playback (YouTube Music supports audio & video downloading), but they give you notification control as well.
YouTube Music is quickly becoming my go-to unofficial YouTube app, ahead of OGYouTube, Videoder, YouTube Downloader, & AudioPocket. Maintained stability, updates nearly every couple days, & promising upcoming features.
How has nobody mentioned AudioPocket or YouTube Music (not Google's) on XDA Labs? Not only do they both allow for screen off playback, but they give you notification control as well.
YouTube Music just updated today, in fact, & added even more notification controls.
lil bonus YSK - if you have an annoying phone that turns off youtube when you turn off you screen, and you just want to listen without wasting battery life on your display, get Audiopocket. You can switch out of youtube and keep the audio going, or just turn the screen off.

I use AudioPocket and it works most of the time. I have occasionally had to manually kill the app because it wouldn't stop when I wanted it to though.
There are apps that let you steam YouTube audio, such as AudioPocket. I've never tried to use one with a live stream however.
Here's a question - do you just want to listen or do you want to be able to switch back and forth between listening and watching? I ask because you mention 720p, but is this just for higher audio quality?
If you want video Viral is pretty incredible. I stopped using a while back as I was having stability issues, but maybe it's better now.
Another alternative is PVSTAR+ - the UI takes some getting used to, but it works well.
If you just want audio I actually just heard about AudioPocket which I'm actually going to try out. You can't switch back to video afaik, but it seems like a real simple solution that might be good to have on hand. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.audiopocket&hl=en
Being rooted I have the XPosed module YouTube Background Playback which works, but you can't toggle it on or off so it just always keeps playing YT videos when you minimize which gets to be a pain.
I literally just researched this last night. where were you then?!? What i did settle on was using audiopocket. basically you play a youtube video, and then you share it to audiopocket. it puts a control in the notifications and you can put it all in the background and/or turn off the screen.
Are you talking about this one? I can't seem the one named "Background youtube".
I previously used an Xposed module called "Youtube Background Playback", but as long as Xposed is not released in Android 6.0 I won't be able to use it.
I used it for a while but it was annoying when the phone would kill the YouTube process, so instead I use Audio Pocket or Awesome Poput video YouTube extension and make a mini window :D
No longer works with background playback. They were forced by Google to make an update that removes this feature...
There are other apps though. AudioPocket is a new one that I heard of just today.
YouTube background playback xposed module if you're rooted.
This one was published a few days ago and the dev posted it on reddit
It's in alpha, and a little buggy, but it works.
There's an app for that.

I'd use audio pocket it downloads the mp3 format of the video and plays it in your notifaction bar.
You could try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.audiopocket if you have an android phone...
Not sure why it has mediocre reviews, but AudioPocket works great for me!
